🔥 Midleton Very Rare Sweet Irish Chestnut:愛爾蘭威士忌的最終之作?

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Midleton Very Rare Sweet Irish Chestnut: Is This The Ultimate Irish Whiskey? - The Whiskey Wash

They say drinking whiskey outside can make it taste different, but tasting Midleton Very Rare Sweet Irish Chestnut in the very forest where its casks began their journey was an experience I’ll never forget. I was invited by Irish Distillers to visit Midleton Distillery, meet the people behind this remarkable release, and travel to the Cappoquin Estate in County Waterford, where the Irish chestnut trees were sourced. Surrounded by the people who helped create this whiskey, alongside the owner of the land where the trees had grown, everyone was visibly giddy about just how incredible it was. The use of chestnut wood to mature Irish whiskey began at Midleton in 2011, with the wood used to finish some early Method and Madness releases. This gave the Midleton team an idea: what if they could use this interesting wood for an older, rarer release? And what if they could source domestically grown sweet chestnut rather than buying it from France or Spain? Quick whisky question Single malt is everywhere, but what does it mean? We want to know what the word “single” means to you. Three quick questions, under a minute. ✓ Thank you — your response has been recorded! Something went wrong. Please try again. The Story Behind Midleton Very Rare Sweet Irish Chestnut Midleton Very Rare Sweet Irish Chestnut is bottled at a cask strength of 56.1% ABV and combines single grain and single pot still whiskeys aged between 17 and 24 years. Initially matured in a mix of first-fill and refill ex-bourbon casks, the whiskey then underwent a five-year secondary maturation in bespoke, 250-liter Irish sweet chestnut hogsheads that have had an extraordinary journey of their own. The rarity of these casks cannot be overstated. We were told a tale by Eric Ryan (Maturation & Innovation Specialist) before tasting the final whiskey: “Throughout Ireland’s history, it was said that a squirrel wouldn’t touch the ground if it went from the north to the south due to the amount of forest that existed in all of Ireland.” What Will Whisky Look Like in 2027? Voices from Whisky Live Paris READ THE STORYIreland’s history has been marked by devastation in many forms, including the destruction of its forests. Chestnut trees are believed to have been introduced by the Normans, but centuries of conflict over land, foreign rule, the clearing of forests for income and the demands of warfare all contributed to the loss of Ireland’s woodland. At one point, Ireland became a major importer of staves for cask production, having lost so much of the woodland it once possessed. It’s worth pointing out that Irish whiskey regulations allow producers to mature whiskey in casks made from different types of wood. Unlike Scotch whisky, oak isn’t a legal requirement. From Irish Chestnut Trees to Midleton Whiskey Casks The wood sourced for this release came from the Cappoquin Estate, 2,000 acres that have been held by Sir Charles Keane and his family since 1735 in west Waterford. A parcel of Irish chestnut was located by Paddy Purser, who has been involved in developing Midleton’s Dair Ghaelach program with Kevin O’Gorman, using virgin Irish oak to finish select Midleton Very Rare releases. The trees were felled on November 29, 2017, before being sent to Galicia, Spain, to be sawn into staves. They were then transported to Jerez, where Tonelería Antonio Páez Lobato turned them into casks. Chestnut is significantly more tannic than oak and is also much more porous, resulting in a lower density. Consequently, seasoning this wood required much more monitoring than oak. The staves dried much more quickly, but because of the porous nature of the wood, they had to be sprayed with water throughout the process to prevent cracking and other issues. Given the rarity of domestically sourced Irish chestnut, taking care of these staves was particularly important. The seasoning process lasted around 15 months in Spain. Once the moisture levels had dropped to around 16%, the staves were expertly assembled into casks, toasted rather than charred, and shipped back to Midleton. There, they were cared for under the watchful eye of Derek Cronin, the first new cooper at Midleton in 45 years, who took over from the legendary Ger Buckley. Derek is now responsible for monitoring and maintaining more than 2,000,000 casks at Midleton Distillery. Derek now has Ger’s cooper’s mark in his possession. For those of you who read my article on Midleton’s 200th anniversary last year, Ger and his family’s story is one of the most emotional and romantic you’ll ever hear in whiskey. The mature whiskeys were then transferred into these 250-liter chestnut hogsheads for what ended up being a five-year secondary maturation. Within the first year, the whiskey had taken on a huge amount of color and flavor, before eventually plateauing under the watchful assessment of both Kevin O’Gorman (Master Distiller) and Eric Ryan (Maturation & Innovation Specialist). How Chestnut Wood Influences Midleton Very Rare Whiskey When it comes to the single pot still components, we’re looking at a combination of three styles: light, medium and heavy/traditional. One thing worth keeping in mind is that these variations use the exact same ingredients of malted and unmalted barley, but are collected at different cut points during distillation. The heavy/traditional style uses a much wider cut, which the distillery only produces for two to three weeks a year. That wider cut brings in congeners that benefit from longer aging. As a result, this heavier style is highly sought-after and tends to be used for more premium and older releases in the range. An incredible detail that demonstrates just how porous chestnut wood is: Midleton would typically expect an evaporation loss of around 12% over a five-year period. Once the aged whiskeys were placed into the chestnut casks, they lost 29% over those five years. Tasting Midleton Very Rare Sweet Irish Chestnut at Cappoquin Estate After a fully immersive day of seeing these chestnut casks, touring the old distillery, having in-depth talks with Eric Ryan and Derek Cronin, and trying some remarkable whiskey, we got to be part of one of the greatest moments I’ve ever experienced in whiskey. We were driven to the Cappoquin Estate in west Waterford, passing Mark Zuckerberg’s newest purchase, a castle, along the way. Ironically, he really enjoys his privacy. Arriving at this stunning estate on a warm day with the most subtle chill in the air, we were given pairs of Wellington boots to help us through the undergrowth, along with some fresh apples taken directly from the estate’s trees. We stepped through a tightly packed forest illuminated by delicate orange neon light, where we were greeted by a gentleman and his woodturning tools. His name was John, and he showed us his carefully developed skills as he carved these beautiful wooden drinking cups. After a wonderful chat and seeing his work, we continued until a small break in the trees revealed Master Distiller Kevin O’Gorman standing beside the twin coppice that once held two of these rare Irish chestnut trees. The stump was adorned with a bottle of Midleton Very Rare Sweet Irish Chestnut, and the entire group was giddy with excitement, still processing the history and knowledge we’d gained throughout this journey. The whiskey is excellent. There’s no other way of describing it, and you can see my review below for an in-depth breakdown. One point that has to be made is that I’ve never experienced a launch event where everyone was so excited. This wasn’t just a brand-new product, but something that had taken almost a decade to release. Something that had distillers, maturation experts and coopers wearing mile-wide smiles. I can only hope that the excitement of the group I was part of mirrored what we saw, heard and tasted as we were walked through this remarkable journey of domestic whiskey production. The Old Forester Distillery has announced the launch of the first release in its new annual ultra-premium, age-stated series, which is said to represent the pinnacle of the brand’s craftsmanship. The Old Forester Tribute Series 2026 Release (57.5% ABV), which is a 12 Year Old Bourbon matured in American oak barrels, comes presented in a new collectible bottle inspired by Old Forester’s historic holiday decanter collection. The Tribute Series pays homage to the best of Old Forester and celebrates the brand’s legacy of firsts, from its first twice-barrelled expression to the unique heat-cycled maturation process that shapes the whiskey’s flavour over time. Drawing on more than 150 years of bourbon-making heritage and design, the series brings together exceptional whiskey and Old Forester’s long-standing eye for distinctive packaging to create a meaningful, contemporary collectible designed to be as memorable as the bourbon it contains. The distinctive blending and maturation process brings together some of Old Forester’s oldest age-stated stocks, rather than relying on single-barrel or single-lot selections. Bottled at an optimal proof of between 110 and 125, each release is designed to deliver a rich flavour profile that sets a new benchmark for aged bourbon. The Old Forester Tribute Series 2026 Release, is said to open with aromas of warm caramel, sweet leather, golden raisins and dark cherries. On the palate, notes of cherry and candied walnuts develop into sweet cinnamon and cardamom, followed by a long finish of toasted oak, peppercorn, cherry preserves and black tea. Commenting on the launch, Caleb Trigo, Assistant Master Distiller at Old Forester, said: “The Tribute Series celebrates the craftsmanship and innovation that has defined Old Forester for generations. By bringing together some of our most mature whiskey and drawing inspiration from an important chapter in our design history, we’ve created an expression that honours where Old Forester has been while showcasing what makes our whiskey distinctive today.” Available in limited quantities, Old Forester Tribute Series 2026 Release is now available from selected retailers in the US, for a RRP of $299.99. MGP Ingredients, the Kansas-based spirits and ingredients group, has announced plans to rebrand as Sempreon later this year. The Sempreon brand will officially launch on November 2, 2026, alongside the company’s planned transition to its new Nasdaq ticker symbol, CASK. Sempreon represents a new corporate identity that brings together the company’s three businesses and reflects its evolution over 85 years. The new name will represent the next chapter for a company shaped by the legacies of MGP Ingredients, Luxco and the many businesses, brands and teams that have joined the organization over time. Across Branded Spirits, Distilling Solutions and Ingredient Solutions, generations of expertise, craftsmanship, trusted relationships and shared commitment have built a differentiated platform for growth. The group’s distilling capabilities grew significantly following its 2011 Lawrenceburg acquisition. The 2011 acquisition of the historic Lawrenceburg, Indiana, distillery further expanded those capabilities, adding significant distillation capacity and expertise. Now known as MGP Distillery, the facility remains a cornerstone of the company’s American whiskey operations and distilling heritage. Two further deals reshaped the business. MGP acquired its Lawrenceburg distillery in 2011 and completed the acquisition of Luxco in 2021. The company acquired Penelope Bourbon in 2023. “Sempreon is the next chapter for a company that’s been building toward this for years,” said Julie Francis, president and chief executive officer of MGP Ingredients. “Since 1941, we’ve grown from a single distillery into a business spanning Branded Spirits, Distilling Solutions and Ingredient Solutions.” What Will Whisky Look Like in 2027? Voices from Whisky Live Paris READ THE STORYFrancis added: “This name brings all three of our businesses under one identity.” The new identity draws on classical roots. “Semper,” derived from the Latin word for “always,” represents the enduring foundation on which the company was built, while “Aion,” drawn from the Greek word for “eternity,” reflects its forward-looking vision for the future and a legacy designed to last. Matias Bentel, chief marketing officer of MGP Ingredients, said becoming Sempreon honors the company’s history. “We’re carrying that legacy forward through the names of our distilleries, including MGP and Lux Row, while looking ahead to what’s next,” he said. The Branded Spirits portfolio spans several price tiers. It includes Penelope Bourbon, Yellowstone Bourbon, Rebel Bourbon, Remus Bourbon, Ezra Brooks Bourbon, Blood Oath Bourbon, Lux Row Bourbon, Juarez Tequila, El Mayor Tequila, Exotico Tequila and Everclear. Among recent launches is MGP Chapter One: Out of the Shadows. The 10-year-old, 111-proof straight bourbon brings the company’s whiskey-making expertise directly to consumers under the MGP name for the first time. Alongside its spirits divisions, the group retains its ingredients arm. The Ingredient Solutions segment produces specialty ingredients including wheat proteins, starches, dietary fibers and texturized proteins for food manufacturers. The rebrand carries a new mission statement: “Creating moments that matter. Building a legacy that lasts.”

New Era Distillery has unveiled Marquee Small Batch Bourbon, an inaugural release blended by a nine-strong panel of Kentucky bourbon professionals. The Lexington-based producer selected the first batch from 11 Kentucky bourbon barrels, aged between five and nine years across seven different mash bills, with a suggested retail price of $49.99 (£37). The first batch was chosen through a roundtable-style blending session involving some of the state’s leading tasters. Nine bourbon professionals came together to taste 30 barrels ranging in age from five to nine years. The group was split into three teams, with each developing its preferred blend before all three voted to select the winning batch. The selection committee for batch #1 included Maggie Kimberl, content editor at American Whiskey Magazine and a spirits judge; Himanshu Mallick, general manager and bourbon barrel pick specialist at The Pour House; and Kenny Mills, co-host of the Mash Up Bourbon Podcast. The panel also featured Edward Callico of the Bourbon Brotherhood, Felicia Chism of the Kentucky Black Bourbon Guild, Chris Rose of the Lexington Bourbon Society, Mark Rucker of The Bourbon Life Podcast, Tom Wilburn, creative bar lead at Watch Hill Proper, and Brad Williams, senior category manager at Liquor Barn. Marquee is the latest project from the team behind New Era Whiskey, a rare, cask-strength, single barrel brand. What Will Whisky Look Like in 2027? Voices from Whisky Live Paris READ THE STORY“The tastemakers that blended this first batch of Marquee had a blast and created a stellar whiskey,” said Zane Brammell, founder of New Era Whiskey. “I love cask strength bourbon. All of our New Era single barrel releases are cask strength. But I recognize sometimes people don’t always want a super strong, high-priced bottle. Some cocktails and social occasions call for a bourbon like Marquee.” The brand said each release carries colorful labels ranging from vintage-inspired artwork to futuristic mashups, designed to “spark a story.” “People seem to love the variety of creative labels on our newspaper style New Era bottles,” Brammell said. “We wanted to continue the fun with these colorful Marquee Exclusive labels.” Kimberl, one of the panelists, said: “New Era has embarked on a new chapter, one which I thoroughly enjoyed participating in. We worked hard on this first Marquee Bourbon blend and I hope everyone enjoys the fruits of our labor!” The 750ml bottle is available at the New Era Whiskey Distillery, online, and at select Kentucky retailers soon. Future releases will involve a rotating cast of tastemakers, with plans to include contributors from across the United States.

喜歡 Redbreast 12?五款愛爾蘭威士忌值得一試

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:Like Redbreast 12? Five Irish Whiskeys To Try Next - The Whiskey Wash

隨著 Redbreast 12 Year Old 價格上漲,本文推薦五款替代選擇。包括 Boann Single Pot Still Madeira Cask($86,採用燕麥與黑麥增添口感)、Powers John's Lane 12 Year Old($70,偏雪莉風格)、Drumshanbo Single Pot Still($63,使用愛爾蘭燕麥)、Busker Single Pot Still Small Batch($58,CP值最高)及 The Whistler Triple Oak($40,最經濟實惠)。這些酒款各有特色,但都能提供相似的果香、奶油感與辛香特性,適合尋求替代方案的愛好者。

Redbreast 12 Year Old is world-famous for delivering an oily, sweet profile that’s all about fresh fruit, butter, and a gently spicy finish with notes of soft pepper. However, like most things, it is going up in price. Here, we’ve put together a list of whiskeys like Redbreast 12. Some are comparable in price and style, some are cheaper, and one is a lot cheaper and a recent addition to my home cabinet. Boann Single Pot Still Madeira Cask, 47%, $86 / £69 Kicking off with one of the newest quality competitors in the single pot still category. Boann has created an incredible profile and a range of whiskeys that have plenty in common with Redbreast 12, but with some key differences. Quick whisky question Single malt is everywhere, but what does it mean? We want to know what the word “single” means to you. Three quick questions, under a minute. ✓ Thank you — your response has been recorded! Something went wrong. Please try again. Instead of just malted and unmalted barley, the mash bill also contains oats and rye, giving you more mouthfeel and a little more spice. It’s aged in ex-bourbon casks alongside a range of vintage Madeira casks from Justino’s. It’s higher in ABV and a little more expensive, but it ticks all of the boxes for me. An absolute stunner of a new release in the Irish market from a smaller distillery that is trying to bring more history and individual character back to the single pot still category. Powers John’s Lane 12 Year Old, 46%, $70 / £62 One from the same distillery as Redbreast now. Again, this is a whisky that offers plenty of similar notes while pushing much further in a different direction. What Will Whisky Look Like in 2027? Voices from Whisky Live Paris READ THE STORYPowers John’s Lane is more sherry-oriented, with a higher ABV of 46%. It leans less into the buttery profile and more toward chocolate, rich red fruit, and biscuit notes. You can pick this up for around the same price as Redbreast 12, depending on the market, and it normally won’t set you back a huge amount more. It has similarities to Redbreast 12, but follows its own path, with a richer profile that stands out in the world of single pot still whiskeys. Drumshanbo Single Pot Still, 43%, $63 / £52 A whiskey that has similarities to both Redbreast 12 and the Boann mentioned above, Drumshanbo Single Pot Still is made using malted barley, unmalted barley, and Irish Barra oats. The oats provide a richer, creamier texture and help the whiskey stand out in a very clear way. The Shed Distillery, which produces this whiskey, has been on my “to watch” list in Irish whiskey for years. It is certainly one worth keeping an eye on. Busker Single Pot Still Small Batch, 46.3%, $58 / £47 Coming from the Royal Oak Distillery in Ireland, here we have something with similarities to both Redbreast 12 and Powers John’s Lane. This small-batch release is matured in ex-bourbon casks before being moved into ex-Oloroso sherry casks, all built on a foundation of malted and unmalted barley. Laced with plump red fruit, milk chocolate, and freshly milled barley, Busker Small Batch is one of the best-value purchases you can make in the current world of Irish whiskey, let alone single pot still whiskey. This distillery offers really good value for money across its range, but this is the bottle to have if you want something that can compete with one of the biggest distilleries in Ireland and one of the largest brands in Irish whiskey. The Whistler Triple Oak Irish Whiskey, 40%, $40 / £32 I am a fan of affordable whiskeys, and their taste and style can be hard to deny for the money, especially in the modern world of luxury pricing and marketing. The Whistler Triple Oak is one of those constant “must re-buy” bottles that regularly works its way through my house. A combination of single pot still, single malt, and single grain Irish whiskeys, it’s an absolute montage of creamy vanilla, caramel, and sweet oak. It’s a fabulous bottle with plenty in common with Redbreast 12 Year Old, while saving you some money and delivering a flavor profile that can comfortably hold its own. Which Redbreast 12 Alternative Should You Try? Whiskeys like Redbreast 12 aren’t hard to come by, and the Redbreast lineup itself offers some of the best Irish whiskeys on the market. However, with prices rising and more smaller distilleries attracting the attention of whiskey drinkers, there are plenty of high-quality alternatives worth exploring. Any of the bottles listed above would make a wonderful alternative to Redbreast 12 Year Old. But if you still find yourself reaching for a bottle of that classic Midleton release, nobody is going to argue with you.

Cigar blends or cigar malts are whiskeys that are created specifically to be paired with cigars—not to taste like cigars, as they are sometimes misinterpreted. That’s usually done by blending together different styles of whiskey or using various cask finishes, depending on the style and country of origin. In the case of the Dalmore, the new Cigar Malt Signature Reserve Aged 18 Years was aged across a total of five different cask types, yielding a whisky that can be enjoyed on its own as well as sipped with a fine cigar. The Dalmore is a Highland distillery known for aging its whisky in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, often finishing the liquid in rare sherry, port, and other fortified wine barrels. As we reported last spring, the distillery recently reopened to the public by offering bespoke, high-end, private tours that include custom tastings. This new 18-year-old expression is the latest addition to the Dalmore’s portfolio, following the recent launch of the Dalmore 17, which was the first new whisky to join the Principal Collection since 2022. This new whisky is, obviously, one year older, and it was finished in a different array of casks. The core range already includes the Cigar Malt Reserve, a non-age statement whisky matured in a combination of American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, Cabernet Sauvignon barriques, and Matusalem Oloroso sherry casks. The new 18-year-old expression was initially matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, and then finished in four different cask types: marsala for “ginger warmth and spice;” Cabernet Sauvignon barriques for “structure and refined tannins;” Cabernet Franc barriques for “aromatic nuance and subtle complexity;” and Matusalem sherry casks for dried fruit and nut notes. The whisky was bottled with natural color and no chill filtration at 46 percent ABV. “[This is] a rich and robust Dalmore which beautifully partners with the cigar smoking occasion,” said master whisky maker Dr. Kirstie McCallum in a statement. “[It brings] together the Dalmore’s signature Matusalem influence, with rich and decadent Sicilian marsala, Cabernet Sauvignon, and elegant Cabernet Franc.” We did not get to try a sample, but the official tasting notes describe flavors like forest berries, sticky dates, orange marmalade, dark chocolate, and spice on the palate, followed by dark fruit, nutmeg, and cinnamon on the finish. Cigar Malt Signature Reserve Aged 18 Years will be available here in the U.S. starting November 1 (SRP $400), and you can currently find the 17-year-old (SRP $250) at specialty liquor stores now.

The Glenfiddich whisky range spans the fresh, fruit-led character of the 12 year old and the richer flavours and distinctive cask finishes of its older expressions. We take a look at the Glenfiddich whisky price in Delhi, Mumbai, Gurgaon, Kolkata and Chennai, covering 4 expressions: Glenfiddich 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old Solera Reserve, 18 Year Old Small Batch Reserve and 21 Year Old Gran Reserva whisky, along with the tasting notes and characteristics that set each whisky apart. Why this whisky price comparison? After all, in India, whisky prices should be uniform. Well, that is not the case. The price of a whisky bottle can vary considerably between cities as they are shaped by state excise duties and local retail rates. A familiar name in the world of single malt whiskies, Glenfiddich 12 Year Old whisky is known for its fresh fruit character. Pear and green apple lead the flavour profile of this Glenfiddich whisky, complemented by honey, vanilla and gentle oak. Its approachable character makes it a versatile choice for a home bar, whether served neat or with a little water. Glenfiddich 12 Year Old whisky price in Delhi: Rs 5,190. Glenfiddich 12 Year Old whisky price in Mumbai: Rs 6,900. Glenfiddich 12 Year Old whisky price in Gurgaon: Rs 3,600. Glenfiddich 12 Year Old whisky price in Kolkata: Rs 4,350. Glenfiddich 12 Year Old whisky price in Chennai: Rs 6,880. The Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Solera Reserve Whisky brings added depth through its maturation in bourbon, sherry and new oak casks, followed by marrying in a Solera Vat. Dried fruit, warming spice, honey and oak give this single malt a richer profile than the entry-level expression. Glenfiddich 15 Year Old whisky price in Delhi: Rs 6,375. Glenfiddich 15 Year Old whisky price in Mumbai: Rs 9,600. Glenfiddich 15 Year Old whisky price in Gurgaon: Rs 6,200. Glenfiddich 15 Year Old whisky price in Kolkata: Rs 6,690. Glenfiddich 15 Year Old whisky price in Chennai: Rs 10,090. For those who prefer a more mature dram, the Glenfiddich 18 Year Old Small Batch Reserve Whisky offers a fuller expression of Glenfiddich's Speyside character. Its sherry and bourbon cask maturation contributes notes of dried fruit, caramel, spice and oak, making it a considered choice for an occasion that calls for a slower pour. Glenfiddich 18 Year Old whisky price in Delhi: Rs 13,265. Glenfiddich 18 Year Old whisky price in Mumbai: Rs 15,750. Glenfiddich 18 Year Old whisky price in Gurgaon: Rs 9,200. Glenfiddich 18 Year Old whisky price in Kolkata: Rs 13,260. Glenfiddich 18 Year Old whisky price in Chennai: Rs 14,050. The Glenfiddich 21 Year Old Gran Reserva Whisky stands apart for its Caribbean rum cask finish, which adds layers of tropical sweetness to the mature single malt. Notes of fig, ginger, vanilla and spicy toffee give it a distinctive character, placing it at the premium end of this selection. Glenfiddich 21 Year Old whisky price in Delhi: Rs 29,755. Glenfiddich 21 Year Old whisky price in Mumbai: Rs 36,000. Glenfiddich 21 Year Old whisky price in Kolkata: Rs 29,500. The Glenfiddich story began in Dufftown, Scotland, where William Grant and his family built a distillery that produced its first spirit on Christmas Day in 1887. Its name, Gaelic for 'valley of the deer', reflects its Scottish roots, while the distillery's growing reputation helped bring single malt Scotch to a wider international audience. Note: Glenfiddich whisky prices are approximate and may vary by retailer, bottle size, availability and state excise duties. Please check with licensed retailers for the latest price of whiskies.

巴西威士忌50年的祕密:為什麼你還沒聽說過?

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Brazil Has Been Making Whisky For 50 Years, So Why Haven’t You Heard About It? - The Whiskey Wash

Brazil is familiar to the drinks world as a producer of cachaça and a substantial market for imported whisky. Yet its own whisky story has often escaped notice. Production is not new: Union Distillery began making malt spirit in southern Brazil in 1974. What has changed since 2019 is the visibility and variety of the category. Union has returned to bottling whisky under its own name, Lamas Destilaria has placed Brazilian wood and smoke at the centre of its range, and the country’s first independent bottlers have begun to select and reinterpret local casks. This emerging industry does not have one geographical centre. Union operates in Bento Gonçalves, among the vineyards of Rio Grande do Sul. Lamas is based in Matozinhos, Minas Gerais, a state more readily associated with cachaça. Alba Destilaria is also in Rio Grande do Sul, at Monte Belo do Sul. The Brazilian Whisky Map, published by Inside the Cask, records another cachaça producer, Weber Haus, as planning to enter whisky production in 2027. The map remains small, but it connects regions with mature knowledge of fermentation, distillation, cooperage and wine. A Whisky Industry Decades In The Making Union supplies the historical foundation. The Borsato and Ziero families established Union of Industries as a wine business in 1948, then turned to malt whisky in 1972. During the 1980s, the company worked with Morrison Bowmore, gaining access to Scottish expertise. Union stopped regular releases under its own name in 1986 and concentrated on supplying spirit to other drinks companies. It continued to make whisky on an industrial scale, but its role was largely hidden from consumers. Quick whisky question Single malt is everywhere, but what does it mean? We want to know what the word “single” means to you. Three quick questions, under a minute. ✓ Thank you — your response has been recorded! Something went wrong. Please try again. The business moved distillation from Veranópolis to Bento Gonçalves during 2016 and 2017. Its decision to revive branded releases in 2019 brought that accumulated experience back into view. Inside the Cask’s 2023 profile reported annual production of about two million litres of alcohol, with capacity for three million. The distillery has three copper pot stills, a 30,000-litre mash tun and 15 stainless-steel washbacks. Fermentation runs for approximately 90 hours. Most malt is sourced from Brazil and neighbouring countries, while peated malt comes from Europe. Maturation is an equally imposing part of the operation. Inside the Cask recorded more than 20,000 casks in Union’s warehouses, with room for about 35,000. The company’s recent interview underlined how deeply the business-to-business model remains embedded in its identity. Most production still goes to customers that buy spirit in bulk. Developing a consumer brand therefore involves more than putting an established whisky into a new bottle. It requires specialist retail, tourism, packaging and a direct relationship with drinkers. Union now offers that relationship through several ranges. Their Pure Malt Exclusive range includes wine-cask, virgin-oak and peated expressions; Autograph and vintage releases provide room for older or more limited stocks. Peated whisky represents only a modest share of production, at around six to seven per cent, but the range shows the breadth of spirit available. Union’s warehouses have also supplied the stock for one of the most significant developments since 2019: independent bottling. What Will Whisky Look Like in 2027? Voices from Whisky Live Paris READ THE STORYLamas And The Influence Of Native Brazilian Woods Lamas Destilaria presents a different version of Brazilian whisky. Brothers Márcio, Marcelo and José Carlos Lamas began experimenting on a small scale around 2009 and 2010, before releasing their first single malt in 2019. The date places Lamas at the beginning of the category’s more public phase, but its importance lies in how it has used local materials. Instead of treating Scottish single malt as a template to reproduce, the distillery has looked to Brazil’s existing spirits culture for flavour. Native woods provide the most obvious connection. Lamas has matured or finished whisky in amburana, bálsamo, angico, sassafrás, cumaru and putumuju, all woods with precedents in cachaça. The distillery starts with a common malt spirit, then adjusts finishing times and blending proportions to the behaviour of each cask. Amburana can transform whisky within weeks; less assertive woods may require six months or more. The task is to retain the grain beneath those unfamiliar aromas. “If you’re not careful, it becomes more native wood than malt,” Márcio Lamas told Inside the Cask. That warning captures the difference between local character and novelty. Lamas has discarded trials that overwhelmed the spirit or made the whisky resemble cachaça too closely. Its use of eucalyptus smoke follows the same principle. Eucalyptus does not imitate peat; it supplies a recognisably different aromatic register. These experiments suggest that a Brazilian style will come from controlling local materials, rather than adding them as a point of difference after production. Independent Bottlers Bring Brazilian Whisky To New Audiences Wine offers another route. Brazil’s southern vineyards place distillers close to freshly emptied casks and the people who made them. Lunatic Asylum, founded by Alba’s Pedro Paiva and spirits educator Rafael Nardi, became Brazil’s first independent whisky bottler when it launched at the end of 2024. The company does not distil. It acquires individual casks, selects how they should be matured or finished, and bottles them under its own label. Its debut, Crystal Mountain, drew directly on Union’s past. The whisky was distilled at the former Veranópolis site in 2013, then matured for 11 years in first-fill ex-bourbon casks. It was bottled at 54 per cent ABV, without chill filtration or added colour, in a run of 250 bottles. The release sold out, showing an appetite for Brazilian whisky presented with the production detail and limited scale familiar to enthusiasts of independent Scotch bottlings. The second release, Golden Mouth of Ruin, connected Union’s spirit with the local wine industry. Six-year-old whisky spent five years in ex-bourbon wood before more than 13 months in a first-fill French oak cask that had held Nebbiolo. The cask came from a winery in nearby Flores da Cunha and was collected and filled with whisky on the same day. Lunatic Asylum bottled 349 bottles at 54 per cent ABV; they also sold out. The Challenges Facing Brazilian Whisky Brazil’s climate shapes every producer’s choices. Annual evaporation can reach roughly five to seven per cent, compared with about one to two per cent in Scotland, according to Inside the Cask. Heat can increase interaction between spirit and wood, but faster extraction is not the same as maturity. It can intensify flavour rapidly while reducing the volume left to bottle. Native wood, fresh wine casks and a warm warehouse all demand close attention if the distillate is to remain present. The category still has obstacles. Imported whisky carries considerable prestige among Brazilian consumers, domestic distribution is expensive, and export rules differ between markets. Union possesses scale and mature stocks but must make a name long associated with bulk production meaningful to drinkers. Lamas has a clear flavour identity but works on a smaller scale. Independent bottlers rely on access to distinctive casks and on consumers understanding why their selection adds value. Since 2019, however, Brazil has gained the elements of a functioning whisky culture. There is a large established producer, a distillery committed to native materials, new entrants with experience in wine and cachaça, and independent bottlers prepared to examine existing stocks cask by cask. Their whiskies do not yet amount to a settled national style, and that may be an adva

保樂力加印度威士忌19%成長背後:重點是會計技巧而非市場暴漲

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Pernod Ricard’s 19% India Whisky Growth Is Real, but the Number Flatters It - The Whiskey Wash

This summer, Pernod Ricard sent some of its Indian whisky to distributors ahead of schedule, because the company name printed on its labels was about to change. Those early shipments helped India post 19% organic sales growth in the three months to September, in a quarter when the French group’s sales fell 10% in the United States and 25% in China. India’s whisky market is growing, but the 19% measures something narrower than what Indians are drinking. It counts organic sales from Pernod Ricard into the trade, and this quarter that figure was lifted by a weak comparison in Maharashtra and by stock shipped early to distributors. Pernod Ricard’s own management puts underlying growth in the high single digits, roughly half the headline rate. That still makes India the strongest major market in a group whose overall sales slipped, and most of that strength comes from whisky made in India rather than imported from Scotland or Ireland. A Maharashtra Tax Shock Sets a Low Bar for India Whisky Sales In June 2025, Maharashtra’s government raised the excise on Indian-made foreign liquor, the category that covers mainstream Indian whisky, from three times to four and a half times the manufacturing cost. Retail prices for many brands were expected to rise by around half, and the state created a separate Maharashtra Made Liquor category at the same time. When Pernod Ricard reported its first quarter a year ago, it said Indian sales had grown just 3% because the excise change had sharply reduced demand in the state. Quick whisky question Single malt is everywhere, but what does it mean? We want to know what the word “single” means to you. Three quick questions, under a minute. ✓ Thank you — your response has been recorded! Something went wrong. Please try again. That depressed quarter is now the yardstick, so a business that merely recovers to its normal level of trade will show a strong year-on-year percentage against a weak base, without any real acceleration in what drinkers are buying today. Pipe-Fill, Relabeling and a Possible Indian IPO Pernod Ricard is also preparing for a possible stock-market listing of its Indian business, and those preparations require a change of company name and therefore new labels on its products. To avoid gaps on shelves during the changeover, it brought some shipments forward, an effect the trade calls pipe-fill. Stock sitting in a distributor’s warehouse counts as a sale for Pernod Ricard, but nobody has yet bought or drunk it. Whisky shipped early in one quarter is whisky that does not need shipping in a later one, so the benefit is likely to reverse as the transition settles. What Will Whisky Look Like in 2027? Voices from Whisky Live Paris READ THE STORYPernod Ricard says any decision to proceed with the listing remains subject to board approval, which it has not yet given. Mauve Croizat, its executive vice-president for finance, told investors the board had asked management to keep preparing so the company would be ready if it goes ahead. Organic Growth Is Not the Same as Indian Whisky Demand Pernod Ricard’s organic figures strip out currency movements and changes to its portfolio to make quarters comparable, and its Indian portfolio has shrunk. In December 2025 it completed the sale of Imperial Blue to Tilaknagar Industries, parting with one of the country’s best-selling whiskies for 34.42 billion rupees. That disposal accounts for much of the €127 million that the company says changes in scope removed from its first-quarter sales. Group sales came to €2.234 billion, down 0.9% on an organic basis and 6.3% as reported, even as volumes rose 6%. The India figure therefore tracks a smaller business than the one Pernod Ricard ran a year ago, measured like for like, and says nothing directly about the size of the Indian market. Pernod Ricard says its imported spirits in India grew at a very strong double-digit rate, naming Jameson, Ballantine’s and Absolut, although Absolut is vodka rather than whisky. Royal Stag and Blenders Pride, both made in India, also grew strongly in double digits, according to the company, which does not disclose sales by brand. Royal Stag and the Seagram Inheritance Those two Indian brands carry Pernod Ricard’s business in the country, and both came with the break-up of the Seagram drinks empire in 2001, which Pernod Ricard divided with Diageo. Pernod Ricard came away from that deal with Chivas Brothers, The Glenlivet and Martell, and also kept Seagram’s Indian whisky operation, including Royal Stag and Imperial Blue. Absolut arrived seven years later, when Pernod Ricard bought the Swedish state-owned V&S Vin & Sprit for €5.63 billion in 2008. Royal Stag has since grown into one of the largest whisky brands on earth. Pernod Ricard describes it as the world’s leading whisky by volume, at about 32 million cases, while industry rankings for 2024 placed it narrowly behind Diageo’s McDowell’s No. 1. Much Indian whisky is blended from molasses-based spirit, which is why many of these brands cannot be sold as whisky in the European Union. In the year to June 2026, Pernod Ricard’s Indian sales rose 7% organically, or 9% excluding Imperial Blue, and the company says it gained market share. Set beside that full-year record, a high-single-digit underlying pace for the latest quarter looks like continuity rather than a sudden surge. What the India Whisky Figures Mean for Scotch The UK–India trade agreement came into force on 15 July 2026, halving India’s tariff on Scotch whisky from 150% to 75%, with a further cut to 40% due over ten years. Pernod Ricard expects the deal to make its Scotch brands more affordable. But shelf prices have moved far less than the tariff, and a single quarter of trade shipments, inflated by stock built ahead of a relabeling, is far too little evidence to measure what the cut has done. For drinkers, little has changed this quarter beyond the prices Maharashtra set last year. For Pernod Ricard, India is doing an outsized share of the work while its two biggest markets shrink. A listing would put a public price on that growth, which gives investors good reason to look past the headline rate. The figures to watch are those for the coming quarters, when the Maharashtra comparison falls away and the early shipments work through distributors’ stock. If India holds a high-single-digit pace once the comparisons stop helping, that steadier number will be worth more to Pernod Ricard than this quarter’s headline.

Unite suspends planned strikes at Diageo’s Cameronbridge distillery The union paused three October walkouts to continue Acas-backed talks over job cuts with an overtime ban still in place Friday, October 16, 2026 Unite has suspended planned strike action at Diageo’s Cameronbridge distillery in Scotland, temporarily easing a labor dispute over job losses at one of the company’s key production sites. The union said further strikes scheduled for October 15, October 19 and October 22 would not go ahead after a one-day stoppage on October 12. The pause is intended to allow talks between Unite, Diageo and Acas, the U.K.’s labor conciliation service, to continue. “As a gesture of goodwill, and to facilitate talks between Unite, Diageo and Acas, we have agreed to suspend planned strike action this October,” Unite regional officer Dougie Orchardson said in a statement reported Thursday. The dispute has centered on planned job cuts at Cameronbridge. Unite has said it is concerned about worker safety and employee wellbeing if roles are removed without any matching reduction in production at the distillery. The union argues that keeping output at the same level while reducing staffing could increase pressure on the remaining workforce. While the walkouts have been suspended, the conflict has not been resolved. Unite said other industrial action short of a strike will remain in place during negotiations, including a ban on overtime. That means normal operations could still face some strain even without full stoppages, depending on staffing needs at the site. The suspension offers both sides a chance to test whether negotiations can produce a deal without a longer disruption. For Diageo, avoiding repeated strikes at Cameronbridge would remove an immediate operational risk at a major Scotch production facility. For Unite, the move allows it to keep pressure on management while showing a willingness to negotiate. The dispute is being watched closely in the drinks business because Cameronbridge is a major grain distilling site and an important part of Scotch whisky production. A prolonged conflict there could have affected output, scheduling and supply planning beyond a single plant. Even though the strikes have been paused, the case underscores broader tensions in the beverage industry as large producers pursue cost savings while unions push back against staffing reductions they say could affect safety and workloads. The development also highlights how labor disputes in the drinks sector are increasingly tied to wider business decisions on efficiency and restructuring. Companies are under pressure to manage costs, but unions are demanding that those changes do not shift too much risk onto workers or weaken operating standards at large industrial sites. For now, the immediate threat of more strike days this month has been lifted, but the overtime ban and the union’s continued objections to the job cuts show that the underlying disagreement remains active. The next phase of the dispute will depend on whether the talks with Diageo and Acas can produce terms that address employment concerns without reopening the strike calendar.

A whisky doesn’t have to be smoky, eye-wateringly expensive or intensely powerful to make an impression. Sometimes the secret lies in the balance between fruit, sweetness and a generous dose of patience. The Singleton of Dufftown 18 Year Old is a fine example. This Speyside whisky is 18 years old, wonderfully smooth and invites you to linger over its flavour profile. It’s time for a new Whisky in the Spotlight. If you browse the shelves of a liquor store, you’ll soon come across the name The Singleton. The brand is known for its smooth, fruit-forward whiskies, which appeal to both newcomers and seasoned whisky enthusiasts. Yet behind that instantly recognisable bottle lies a story that is a little more complicated than you might expect. The Singleton doesn’t come from a single distillery. In fact, the brand encompasses three different Scottish distilleries and at one point there were even four. The Singleton is actually three whiskies in one brand Where most single malt brands are tied to one specific distillery, The Singleton is made at three different distilleries: Dufftown, Glen Ord and Glendullan. All three produce single malt whisky, but each has its own character and history. The Singleton of Dufftown is aimed at Europe, Glen Ord at Asia and Glendullan at North America. So if you pick up a bottle of The Singleton in Europe, there’s a good chance you’re holding a Speyside whisky. Because this whisky is made specificcally for Euroipe, it also became the fastest growing Single malt of the continent. If you look at the three The Singleton whiskies together it's even is the fastest growing single malt in the world. What these whiskies have in common is their emphasis on approachability. The brand makes it clear that you don’t need an extensive knowledge of whisky to enjoy a good single malt. That doesn’t mean there aren’t interesting whiskies for more experienced enthusiasts. Alongside younger expressions such as The Singleton 12 Year Old, there are also older bottlings. The 18-year-old Dufftown is a perfect example. Dufftown: a whisky town with a rich history To fully understand the story behind The Singleton 18, we need to take a quick trip to Dufftown. This small town lies in the heart of Speyside, the Scottish whisky region known for its fruity and often elegant single malts. It’s no coincidence that Dufftown is often referred to as the whisky capital of the world. In and around the town, you’ll find world-famous names such as Glenfiddich, The Balvenie and Mortlach. Dufftown Distillery itself was founded in 1895, when a former mill was converted into a whisky distillery. Production began in 1896, giving the distillery more than 130 years of history. The distillery started with just two stills, but expanded considerably over the years. Today, Dufftown has six copper stills. Much of the whisky produced there goes into blended Scotch whisky, including the well-known Bell’s blends, but fortunately, not all of it ends up in blends. Some of the spirit is given time to mature as a single malt. For The Singleton 18 Year Old, that means waiting at least 18 years—but the result is certainly worth holding on to. The Singleton 18 Year Old: 18 years of maturation in bourbon and sherry casks So what makes The Singleton of Dufftown 18 Year Old so special? It starts with the casks in which the whisky matures. This single malt is matured in several types of oak cask, including refill ex-bourbon casks and casks that previously held Pedro Ximénez (PX) and Oloroso sherry. It’s an intriguing combination. Bourbon casks typically contribute gentle notes of vanilla, honey and caramel. Sherry casks, meanwhile, bring more dried fruit, nuts and spice. What does The Singleton of Dufftown 18 Year Old taste like? Don’t expect huge clouds of smoke, barbecue flavours or an explosion of pepper from this whisky. The Singleton 18 Year Old focuses instead on fruit, nuts and a pleasingly soft sweetness. As soon as you pour the whisky, aromas emerge that bring to mind a beautiful autumn day, as you can read in our The Singleton 18 Year Old review. Ripe apples, stewed fruit and roasted nuts take centre stage, followed by caramel, chocolate and a subtle hint of oak. On the palate, the story becomes even more interesting. The whisky has a smooth, almost oily mouthfeel, combining sweet flavours with a drier, lightly spicy character. Here are the tasting notes at a glance: - Nose: Ripe autumn apples, apricots, berries, roasted hazelnuts, walnuts, vanilla, caramel and a touch of oak. - Palate: Dark toffee, almond biscuits, ripe apple, rhubarb, soft mint, cacao and gentle spices. - Finish: Medium-length and lightly drying, with oak, stewed fruit, black pepper and an exceptionally subtle trace of wood smoke. This is a whisky you can happily leave in the glass for a little longer. Given more time, its sweet and fruity aromas come through even more clearly. This Singleton also works beautifully in a cocktail Thanks to its sweet, smooth character, this whisky is also an excellent base for a delicious cocktail. An Old Fashioned, for example, is a wonderful choice. For this, use 5 centilitres of The Singleton 18, a small amount of sugar syrup and two dashes of aromatic bitters. Stir everything with ice and garnish with an orange peel. The orange complements the whisky’s fruity side beautifully, while the bitters bring extra focus to its oak notes and spiciness. What should you eat with The Singleton 18? Pairing whisky with food is sometimes a matter of experimentation. Not every whisky works with every dish, but The Singleton 18 has several flavours that make it an excellent choice for food pairing. Try serving this whisky with a cheese board featuring nuts and figs. It turns a simple drinks platter into an elaborate tasting experience in no time. The nutty notes of the cheese complement the roasted hazelnuts and almonds in the whisky. The fig compote adds a touch of fruity sweetness, while the salt and richness of the cheese create a pleasant contrast with the softer character of the single malt. If you really want to make an occasion of it, serve the whisky with a slice of warm apple pie. The ripe apple and spice in The Singleton 18 pair surprisingly well with it. An 18-year-old whisky at a remarkably friendly price Anyone looking for an 18-year-old whisky these days will soon notice that prices can climb considerably. That isn’t the case with this Singleton. You can bring home a bottle for less than 100 euros. For that price, you also get a whisky that has won international acclaim. In 2025, The Singleton 18 received Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, as well as Gold at the International Spirits Challenge. For whisky newcomers looking to discover an older single malt, this is a particularly appealing bottle. And for experienced drinkers who don’t always want a powerful peated dram, it’s a whisky to savour at a leisurely pace. Made possible by Diageo.

英格蘭威士忌 vs 蘇格蘭威士忌:實際差異在哪裡?

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:English Whisky vs. Scotch: What’s Actually Different? - The Whiskey Wash

As an English whisky company working with locally made spirits, Ascalon has a front-row seat to the growing breadth and vibrancy of the English whisky scene. We appreciate the care England’s distillers take to source local ingredients for their whiskies, a legacy we’re proud to contribute to through our use of English oak to build our casks. While drawing inspiration from Britain’s rich history of whisky making, distilleries in England are diverging from their peers in Scotland. They are exploring new ways of malting, fermenting, distilling and maturing to create spirits unique to their homeland. A major boost for the category came in September 2026 when an application for a geographical indication (GI) for English whisky was approved by the UK government. This offers legal protections to English whisky similar to those enjoyed by whisky makers in Scotland, Wales and the island of Ireland. But it’s not solely about regulation: the GI also highlights the production methods that set English whisky makers apart from others across Britain, showing the world what English whisky truly is. Quick whisky question Single malt is everywhere, but what does it mean? We want to know what the word “single” means to you. Three quick questions, under a minute. ✓ Thank you — your response has been recorded! Something went wrong. Please try again. So, where does English whisky align with Scotch — and where does it diverge? Let’s explore the details. What Can English and Scotch Whiskies Be Made From? In both countries, this will depend on the kind of whisky you are making, but there are similarities in how the main styles are produced. In both Scotland and England, single malt whiskies must be made with 100% malted barley. Grain whiskies in both countries can be made from a number of different grains, including rye, wheat and maize. However, there is a difference in where these grains can be grown. English whisky’s regulations state it must be made with cereals grown in the UK (as our Ascalon whiskies already are), but Scotch whiskies can use cereals sourced from other countries. What Will Whisky Look Like in 2027? Voices from Whisky Live Paris READ THE STORYWhere Can They Be Produced? One of the main differences between the Scotch and English whisky regulations is where the stages of production take place. For single malt or single grain whisky in Scotland, the mashing, fermentation and distillation must take place at a single site. In England, only distillation has to take place at a single site — mashing and fermentation can happen elsewhere, and often does, for example at partner breweries. This could be a practical decision for distillers with more limited space or resources, but it’s also one made in the service of flavour: with expert brewers creating the wash for some English distilleries, you see more widespread experimentation with malt and yeast varieties. How Do They Have To Be Produced? How English and Scotch whiskies are distilled is an area of greater alignment. Both have the same requirements for the distillation process. For example, the spirit should not be distilled to more than 94.5% ABV, which ensures it retains characteristics that whisky makers cultivate carefully with their grain selection and fermentation. There is some discrepancy when it comes to single malts, though. In Scotland, the spirit must be double distilled in copper pot stills. The English whisky rules state that single malt must be distilled “at least once” and are less strict on the materials of the still, only requiring the spirit vapours to have “sufficient copper contact” to help remove undesirable flavour compounds such as sulphur. How Can English and Scotch Whiskies Be Aged? Maturation is another element where there are similarities and differences between England and Scotland. Both countries say casks cannot exceed 700 litres in size and that maturation must take place in the country where the whisky was made, but the wood used to make those casks varies. In Scotland, whisky must be matured in oak casks. In England, whisky makers are allowed to use non-oak casks too, for example chestnut or cherry wood. There’s also some experimentation with different oak species, such as the English oak we use to make our casks at Ascalon. How Long Do The Whiskies Have To Be Aged For? In both England and Scotland, a whisky must be aged for a minimum of three years. However, in this situation, age really is only a number. Due to the faster evaporative losses in England’s hotter, drier climate — about 4–5% per year, as opposed to 2–3% in Scotland — English whiskies can reach maturity faster. An English single malt can achieve roughly the same level of maturity in 11 years as a single malt Scotch would in 18 years. Hank Williams wanted to record sermons, but his producer, Fred Rose, fretted over the jukebox operators who had standing orders for Williams’s singles but tended to place the boxes in bars. They settled on issuing his moral recitations (recorded at Nashville’s Castle Studio ‘50–‘52) as the work of an alter ego, Luke the Drifter, while Williams recorded songs about cheating and drinking under his own name. (Fans knew the “talking blues” were really by Williams, from his joking about Luke during his radio appearances.) In 1952, Hank Thompson had a hit about losing a woman to the honky-tonk life, and Kitty Wells answered by putting the blame on married men; NBC considered the record too suggestive to air, and the Grand Ole Opry refused to let Wells sing it, but it reached No. 1 and stayed there for six weeks. Memphis-born R&B belter K. Michelle says her former labels steered her toward R&B and told her country was off the table for “other reasons,” but she’s able to sing barroom songs and church songs on her first collection of country recordings, made in Nashville and produced by Sugarland’s Kristian Bush. Bush assembled a band equipped with steel, dobro, banjo, and Hammond B3 to back her up. Michelle prefaces the album’s songs with a minute-and-a-half spoken-word piece, over pedal steel and a few simple piano notes. As strings and a high fiddle line build, Michelle rails against people who tried to write her off and the ones who stole her image, drawing on garden metaphors that might grace a church bulletin, culminating in the quasi-slogan that growth is the greatest comeback. When the strings hit their peak, Michelle says she’s not trying to prove people wrong, then cusses them out. The final few seconds are the best, when she tells everybody to fill their cups up and enjoy the ride, like a bartender giving a parting instruction to her customers as the fiddle swells. Michelle’s own cup is filled with Tennessee whiskey, and after making her way through all the different bars on the block, she attempts to pick up the bottle by its 7, the only number she intends to take home. (The bottle hails from Lynchburg, Tennessee, in a dry county, home of Jack Daniel’s Distillery.) Michelle takes a heavier assortment of session musicians—drummer Shannon Forrest and electric guitarists Tom Bukovac and Benji Shanks—with her on “Jack Daniel’s,” celebrating a liquor that won’t leave her in the morning, staying right by her bed, clothes strewn on the floor, still buzzing in her head. She belts out the lyrics to three-part harmonies by Jason Kyle Saetveit and Tania Hancheroff, and at about two minutes in, a guitar breaks into a solo bent toward blue notes, making the song a handy addition to any bar’s playlist. On “Handle On It,” Michelle treats the bottle as medicine, asking where Romeo is, since he never came to get her, over a dobro line courtesy of Justin Schipper and a front-porch stomp. The chorus is a string of stock barroom boasts, taking that shot in the dark and never missing, the hundred proof feeling. The verses get more specific, though, as Michelle describes praying at night and waking up cursing. She and the devil have been running around together as long as she can remember, which makes a morning of swearing a small change, and there is a war on, and it’s bigger than bullets. Her best weapon in this track, “Damn Good Friend” (written by George Birge, Justin Wilson, and Lalo Guzman), might be her cleverness: she might as well carve her name on the forbidden fruit tree the very same day as Adam and Eve, and she walks in the water to be saved. She should’ve been a goner if He’d let her go. So when God has to roll up his sleeves and pick her up off her knees, this country girl sings that she’s about to come on home to Him, and the devil is about to lose a damn good friend—which is a joking way of saying it won’t be a great friendship anymore. This one’s straight voice and strummed acoustic until the chorus kicks in with Brandon Bush’s B3 and a cracking snare. A gospel belt and rolling percussion make the bridge sound like a church service, with Wilson answering in the background. This country girl is from Memphis, Tennessee, as she admits in the second verse of “Blame Tennessee,” where she also mentions Beale Street, barbecue, and Interstate 40—the road that leads from Memphis to Nashville. In the first verse she’s Daddy’s daughter, 100 proof, and she shoots from the hip. She’s too rough, too much, and not enough, so if a guy can’t take her as she is, she tells him to go ahead and skip her. During the hook, she says that while other girls might dream of a white picket fence while they sit by the fireside, she’ll be getting drunk on Friday night—and if a guy doesn’t like that, he should blame Tennessee instead of blaming her. The verses are dry and almost spoken, while the chorus swells with steel and crash cymbals, with Felly answering in the background when she sings the hook. “Yodel” takes this country girl from Memphis to El Paso, where she’s ready to throw her lasso, a rambler out after an outlaw now that all the pretty boys and city boys have left the job half done. She wants a stallion to get her through the night, as she won’t settle for a pony. It’s a jokey song with a kick drum that pounds out the punchline and Ted Pecchio’s bass to keep it in line. It’s a bit goofy, but that’s part of the fun. And her yodel is real—an adept move from chest voice to head voice over Justin Schipper’s banjo rolls. In the breakdown, with only bass and percussion, she speaks to explain that even though the cowboy told her he didn’t do romance, when he walked up on her with his two sets of guns and asked her to dance, “But I can feel it in his pants.” Blush shares “Anything,” and here’s K. Michelle blaming herself again. She’s got a problem with loving the wrong people, with loving a stranger, and catches herself worshipping one of these men she doesn’t even know. And she really can’t even tell you why, though she lies to herself just like she always does. Every once in a while, she even talks herself into thinking she’s at fault for everything. Which is where the song hit, one of the best lines of which is lifted directly from church: “You ain’t my God, ain’t no reason for this type of faith.” The trouble is, the writing gets tangled on itself as it goes: “‘Cause half of nothing means something’s not anything.” That doesn’t exactly scan, but with the full-throated drums and the wide, stacked harmonies, it serves as a fine enough excuse to belt out. It’s the second verse that gets clearest about what she’s looking for in a man—namely, a kind of love that loves her back—all sung in a raspier lower register that takes a couple of steps up during the chorus. Even better is the bridge, sung over an acoustic guitar and an organ pad; the moment the song gets quiet enough for its real idea, a man hands a believer’s devotion. Backed by a wordless choir (supplied by Felly, Saetveit and Hancheroff), she gives that faith back to God at the top of the title song, fingers picking away on a guitar and an organ swelling in the background. (She still drinks when she’s hurting.) It might not be the kind of worship performed on bended knee, and it might not be how her mom thought she’d live, but it’s worship nonetheless. In the second verse, she takes her barroom philosophizing straight to God (“If it’s so bad, why’d He create it?”), and argues that getting gone is what gets her praying. And anyway, Saturday night is just as important as Sunday morning, with a “hell” thrown in for good measure. The corner booth and the front-row pew go with her everywhere. She has to balance all the other roles she plays, too: “I’m somebody’s sister, somebody’s mother/It ain’t one or the other.” When snare, bass, and Schipper’s steel guitar finally join in for the chorus, she offers a parting shot to anybody who judges her, one sourced directly from the eighth chapter in the Gospel of John: “But He with

The new LongHorn will open in late 2027 or 2028 at 3309 Wake Forest Road, after a complete teardown and rebuild. Visit them here. We first told you about this back in June, but learned this week that up in Raleigh’s Brennan Station (corner of Creedmoor and Strickland) Topsail Steamer is holding their grand opening party this Saturday. Not a sit-down joint, but a take-home and steam concept – fresh seafood steam pots packed with the freshest seafood, meats, veggies, and homemade seasonings. Here’s how it works – choose from their signature Bay Buckets (or create your own) and place your order. Next, head home (or wherever you have a burner) with your pot/bucket and follow the simple steaming instructions. (Hint: Just add liquid!). And finally, enjoy! Check them out here. Up in Rolesville, learned this week that Lime & Lemon Indian Grill & Bar is in soft-open mode in their newest Triangle-area location at 110 Bluestone Xing Road. Get ready to enjoy the bold flavors of Indian cuisine, your favorite Lime & Lemon dishes, and the warm hospitality you’ve come to know and love. This is their fifth Triangle-area location. Visit them here. It is here – the North Carolina State Fair (through October 25) and all this year’s yumminess. Check out the map (plan accordingly) and see all the new offerings here. And don’t forget the Weekday Lunch Pass Program, where you can visit the fair on weekdays between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. without paying a permanent admission fee. Kudos to Figulina, the acclaimed Italian-inspired restaurant in downtown Raleigh’s Warehouse District, which was just named Southern Living’s Restaurant of the Month. The feature spotlights “a standout restaurant from across the South. These editor-picked establishments reflect exceptional dining, thoughtful design, and a distinctive influence on community.” Book a night at Figulina here. And on a sad note, the Raleigh food scene lost a beautiful soul last week – Michelle Bender – who had a far-reaching impact – well beyond the walls of Wicked Smile and Five Star. Michelle was also a classmate of mine at Broughton High School. Our heart goes out to her brother Chris and all that knew and loved her. Durham, Orange & Chatham restaurant news The wait is over Pittsboro. Next week a Tavolo Italian Eatery opens in a soft-open mode with reservation-only seating. Located in MOSAIC at Chatham Park, a Tavolo is owned by the same folks that brought us The Sycamore, 39 West Catering, and Forest Hall Wedding and Event Venue. The new spot will offer a warm, elevated-casual approach to Italian dining. Go ahead and visit their website to get on their mailing list so you can receive notification when reservations go live. Congratulations to Greg Lewis and his team. Staying in Pittsboro, Pittsboro Eats shared the news that MOSAIC at Chatham Park will also soon be home to Pecan Jacks, which features unique homemade ice cream, including delightful liquor-infused flavors, and handcrafted Southern treats. They will be next to People’s Coffee and this will be their first location in North Carolina. Get to know them here. We first told you about this back in early August, but learned this week that the new Colombian bistro Melao has opened, taking over the former Little Bull space at 810 N. Mangum St. in Durham. The concept is inspired by Colombia’s incredible diversity; expect vibrant flavors, thoughtful cocktails and dishes rooted in tradition. Think tropical fruits like lulo and maracuyá, fresh seafood inspired by Colombia’s coasts, comforting classics like bandeja paisa, and so much more. Every dish and cocktail showcases the bold, soulful flavors that make Colombian cuisine unforgettable. Whether you grew up with these flavors or you’re discovering them for the very first time, get by soon. Check them out on Instagram here. Staying in Durham, Glenn Gillen notified us that the newest location of LongHorn Steakhouse has opened at 6917 Fayetteville Road. It moved into the former Chili’s building across from The Streets at Southpoint in the Renaissance Center (6917 Fayetteville Road). Visit them here. Over in Hillsborough, The News of Orange reported that Al’s Burger Shack plans to expand its chain of restaurants to 115 Oakdale Drive in the former Pizza Hut. This will be their sixth location here in the Triangle. Check out Al’s here. After a series of back-and-forth texts I had with Carrie Brogren, founder of Chapel Hill Carrboro Foodies, she finally got word that Pocha, a Korean Pub & BBQ located just behind Chapel Hill’s Wegmans at 116 Old Durham Road, is opening this Saturday, October 17. The space looks amazing and the menu makes one’s mouth water. See for yourself. Closings None to report. Keep eating local, folks! Food trucks Looking to find your favorite food truck (or stalking them and simply don’t want to have to admit it)? We understand. Find them on Street Food Finder here. Events The inaugural Chapel Hill Biscuit Festival will celebrate Southern culinary heritage on Sunday, October 25, with a Chefs’ Tasting Event featuring food and drink from some of the South’s premier chefs, bakers and local purveyors. All proceeds will benefit SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals. Led by founding chair Spring Council, daughter of Mama Dip, the festival will bring together culinary talent from across North Carolina and beyond. Guests will enjoy sweet and savory takes on the biscuit, and a variety of beverages. The participating chef lineup includes: Sam Suchoff — Lady Edison Pork / The Pig; Brian Wiles — Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken; Oscar Johnson — Jimmy Pearls; Sera Cuni — The Root Cellar Cafe/ Feedwell Fridges; Tie Whittaker — Buttermilk Boutique; Tonya Council — Tonya’s Cafe & Bake Shop; Britny Stephenson — AC Restaurants, Ashley Christensen’s Restaurant Group; Marvin Ross — Peculiar Pig Farm; Lynn Well — Thyme Spent Personal Chef; Nancie McDermott — Cookbook author; Chris McLaurin — Lutra Cafe & Bakery. Beverage sponsors and booths include: Durham Distillery; Sarah Newman — Bubble Tea; James Creek Cider House; End of Days Distillery; Steel String Brewery; Carrboro Coffee Roasters; Kill Devils Rum; Sutler’s Gin; and Vino Wine. The Chefs’ Tasting Event takes place at American Legion Post 6, 3700 NC-54

The Whiskey, Wine & Blues Festival returns to the South Carolina State Fairgrounds for its second year on Nov. 14, bringing soulful sound and refined taste all for a good cause. From noon to five, attendees will navigate a curated journey of the senses, exploring from the smoky depths of world-class blues performances to the sophisticated amber notes of premier whiskey tastings, and the rich velvet textures of selected vineyard wines to craft beers poured alongside bites from food trucks and featured chefs. Two resident DJs will weave every live set together through music, keeping the event flowing relentlessly from the first note to the last. Every ticket, every pour and every note played serves as a pillar for the Jayln Rachel Foundation — a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit empowering single mothers to pursue their degrees at four-year colleges and universities. The foundation was started by Veronica Mitchell, and is named for her own daughter. After becoming a young mother when she was in college, Mitchell didn’t want to have to quit school for the pregnancy, but lost most of her funding due to her situation. In order to persist in her education, Mitchell lessened her course load and took on jobs, vowing that if she was ever in the position to help someone in her same situation, she would. Through scholarships, textbook and childcare assistance, financial aid, mentorship and career guidance, the foundation equips student-parent mothers with the tools to build a brighter future for themselves and their children. Now, Mitchell works in schools and her organization is reaching out to high school aged mothers in order to ensure they can go to college as well. Her daughter Jalyn Rachel is 24 years old, and graduated from the Citadel in 2024, living out her life as the heart of the organization’s mission. “The Whiskey, Wine & Blues Festival is where unforgettable moments, incredible live music and bold flavors come together! Get ready for an exciting day filled with whiskey, wine, craft beer tastings, delicious food and the soulful sounds of blues, soul and more,” Mitchell told ColaDaily. “Every detail is designed to bring people together, spark new connections, showcase local businesses and support a meaningful cause. We’re not just hosting a festival — we’re creating an unforgettable experience that celebrates community, flavor, music and lasting impact,” Mitchell said. General Admission and VIP packages are available now. All tickets include event entry, a souvenir tasting cup and unlimited whiskey, wine and beer tastings. (0) comments Welcome to the discussion. 威士忌業內人士訪談 #145──Daniel Humphrey(Summerton Whisky Club 創辦人)

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:145th Whisky Insiders Interview – Daniel Humphrey - The Whisky Wire

Name: Daniel Humphrey Company: Summerton Whisky Club Job: Founder Website: summertonclub.com How long have you been working in the whisky industry? Summerton Whisky Club launched in 2018. Although there were two years of research before then, that was when I officially joined the whisky industry. What has been your biggest career highlight to date? Picking just one is difficult. My first bottling, running Europe’s first full-scale virtual whisky festival, and the first time one of the old guard of Scotch distilleries wanted to supply a Summerton Club bottle were all highlights. But if I had to choose just one, it would be the first couple of years of running Summerton Whisky Club. There was a community of people all learning together: reviewers, creators, makers, brand ambassadors, marketeers, retailers and many more. There was such a great spirit of togetherness, with people supporting one another, helping each other and wanting everyone to succeed. It made the whisky industry the place we all wanted to be. During that time, I made so many friends who will be with me for life. It’s not just a career highlight; it’s a life highlight. It’s also been great to watch that community progress in the whisky world. While some have moved on, many are now deeply involved in the industry, doing things they enjoy and are great at. Most importantly, everyone is still there to support others. It’s a beautiful thing to feel part of. Can you remember your first dram, and indeed what it was? My first whiskey experience was Jack Daniel’s and Coke as a teenager. I still remember the first time I moved on to Bulleit at Fabric in London because they didn’t have JD. That’s when I started to realise there was so much more to whiskey. My first Scotch was Auchentoshan Three Wood. My best friend’s brother was a Scotch drinker, and I bought him a bottle that he shared with me. I didn’t like it, and it held back my progression into Scotch for a number of years. During that time, I continued to explore bourbon and rum. It was Monkey Shoulder that got me to cross over into Scotch, and I haven’t looked back since… although one roller hockey tournament in Spain would probably have preferred it if I’d started a little later. What does whisky mean to you? For me, whisky is best enjoyed as a shared experience. It’s part of my memories with friends, whether travelling or at home, celebrating or having a quiet chat, and it helps bring those memories back. Whisky is more than a drink. It has been part of making so many new friends, as well as creating shared memories with old ones. A bottle can often be an aide-mémoire. This is something I hope I’m sharing with our club members. Where would you like to see yourself in five years’ time? The simple answer is still running Summerton Whisky Club, with an amazing community of members at the heart of everything we do. The longer answer is that I have a number of plans for the future of the club, building out our ecosystem and sharing more with our members. We’re producing more of our own bottlings for the club shop and improving the club experience for members. I also have some ideas for bringing my background in the food industry into what we do, alongside more events, club clothing and, hopefully, continuing to enjoy it as much as I do now. What was your last dram? I’m always tasting, discovering new things and learning how our casks are progressing. My last dram would have been a Glen Garioch cask sample. It’s a distillery I’d love to feature as a club bottle. So far, I haven’t been able to get the brand team to talk to me, so I’ve been exploring whether I can buy some casks for us to bottle in the future. The cask sample was delicious and I really hope I can share it with the Club at some point. Do you have a favourite whisky and food pairing combination? I’ve had so many happy nights with friends at the St Albans Whisky Club, where cheese is always brought out during the evening. As whisky is all about shared experiences, cheese will always be my go-to food pairing because it’s part of so many happy memories. What’s your favourite time and place to enjoy a dram? Always with friends. That’s the most important thing; the rest just follows. What do you think is going to be the next big thing on the whisky horizon? Whisky is becoming affordable for drinkers again. We’ve had a few years of prices moving further and further out of reach for fans, which has changed what we drink and how we drink it. The economic slowdown is forcing brands to start talking to us again. We’re the foundation that keeps things ticking over, something many have forgotten in recent times. Unfortunately, that also means we’re going through a period in which we’ll lose some staples of the whisky world. Independent bottlers were the first to go, but, gradually, we’ll see distilleries being impacted too. Familiar brands and faces will be lost and it will hurt. Much of the fun we enjoyed during the good times has dissipated, but that’s a necessary part of ensuring as many as possible get through this period. It’s always important to remember, though, that whisky is a cyclical industry, so better times lie ahead. What’s the one dram you couldn’t live without? Bain’s. Simple, affordable and great on a hot day. It’s a bottle packed with so many memories for me, particularly from the early days of the club. It’s such an interesting distillery and a brand I’ve tried to bring on board for the club a number of times, but I’ve never been able to make it work. Many thanks to Daniel Humphrey.
