£2.125m Macallan
A bottle of The Macallan 1926 Scotch whisky sold for £2.1 million at Sotheby’s auction at The Macallan Estate in Speyside, and another report put the sale at £2.125m. Sotheby’s held the auction to mark 100 years since the whisky was distilled in 1926, and the event was described as the first auction to be held at The Macallan Estate.
Sotheby’s said just 40 bottles were drawn from cask number 263, and the bottle was matured for 60 years in a sherry-seasoned oak cask before being bottled in 1986. Sotheby’s also said the sale was the first of its kind at a Scottish distillery, and the auction was attended by 50 leading whisky collectors with additional bids submitted online.
Cask 263 rarity
The bottle had a pre-sale estimate of £1.7m–£2.2m, and the sale became the world’s first US$1m, £1m whisky in 2018 and the first £2m whisky in 2023. The bottle sold at Sotheby’s first auction at The Macallan Estate in Speyside, Scotland, during the centenary year of the spirit’s distillation.
The cask was emptied in 1986 after 60 years of maturation and yielded just 40 bottles, and the 40 bottles were said not to have been made available for purchase in the usual way. Sotheby’s totals and quotes
The invitation-only event brought in a total of £3.3 million (US$4.4 million) against an estimate of £2.4-3.2m, and 86% of the lots sold achieved prices above their high estimates. Jonny Fowle, global head of whisky & spirits at Sotheby’s, said the result reflected an "enduring fascination that The Macallan 1926 inspires among collectors around the world."
The sale was 100% sold and achieved an above-estimate total of £3.3 million ($4.4 million) against an estimate of £2.4-3.2 million, and the auction was the first auction ever to take place at The Macallan Estate. Jonny Fowle said, "Today’s result reflects the enduring fascination that The Macallan 1926 inspires among collectors around the world," and the auction comprised 42 lots drawn almost exclusively from private collections worldwide.

The USA Spirits Ratings is a little different from many spirits competitions. Rather than having critics taste the whiskies, the judges at the USA Spirits Ratings are trade buyers, the people who decide which bottles end up on store shelves and restaurant back bars. Alongside quality (50%), they also score every entry on value for money (25%) and how it looks on the shelf (25%). So, it is worth sitting up and paying attention to what they have to say.
Indian single malt did very well with this crowd in 2026. Indri’s Diwali release topped the Indian entries with 96 points and two special awards, a Goan single malt called Kadamba was named Single Malt Whiskey of the Year, and Amrut, which was nowhere to be seen in the Indian results at the International Whisky Competition 2026, placed twice in the top five.
Here are the five highest-scoring Indian whiskies, and let us know in the comments if you think the judges got it right.

Indri’s Diwali releases have had a very good year, with the 2025 Marsala cask edition taking first place among the Indian whiskies at the IWC and the new 2026 bottling now finishing top here. Piccadily Distilleries has released one each year since 2023, starting with peated PX sherry casks and moving to Ruby Port for this fourth edition.
The limited editions are crafted to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of light.
It is made at Indri in Haryana, under master blended Surrinder Kumar, from Indian six-row barley distilled in copper pot stills, then matured in Ruby Port casks from Portugal. Krsnaa Mehta of India Circus designed the bottle, which has a white Marwari horse and foal printed onto the glass.
In the UK, 180 numbered bottles were released at 58.5% ABV with no age statement. The Indian market variant is 50% ABV and can be found in some duty-free airports.
This whisky also took Indian Single Malt Whisky of the Year and Spirit of the Year India.
Amrut Indian Single Malt Whisky Cask Strength
Award: Gold
Score: 95 points
Tasting Notes: “A soft, grain-forward profile features sandalwood, toasted coconut, and cinnamon, with a subtle peat note, balanced spice, and a smooth, lingering finish.” – USA Spirits Ratings Judges

India’s first single malt came from Amrut, and the company launched it in Glasgow in 2004 rather than at home. J.N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale founded the business in Bengaluru in 1948, and it made brandy and rum for years before its Kambipura distillery was completed in 1987.
The Cask Strength is made from unpeated six-row barley from Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, double distilled in copper pot stills, and matured in new American oak and ex-bourbon barrels. It is a permanent part of the range, bottled at 61.8% ABV with no age statement.
It packs a powerful punch with the high ABV, but is fairly easy-drinking and a great way to step-up from entry-level Amruts.
Kadamba Indian Single Malt Whisky World Cask
Award: Gold, Single Malt Whiskey Of The Year
Score: 94 points
Tasting Notes: “A light gold spirit offers earthy grain and caramel notes complemented by subtle tropical and baking spice nuances, with a balanced, warm finish and a refined smoky peat aroma.” – USA Spirits Rating Judges
Find Your Next Bottle: ₹2700+
Kadamba finished two points behind Indri but still took the competition’s overall Single Malt Whiskey of the Year award.
It comes from Imperial Distillers & Vintners in Goa, part of the Cheers Group founded by Dr. Mohan Krishna, and takes its name from the Kadamba dynasty, which ruled Goa for around three centuries.
The World Cask edition launched in November 2024. It is distilled in copper pot stills and matured in various casks near the town of Kadamba in North Goa, with no age statement. The judges’ notes mention a “refined smoky peat aroma.”
This one is very difficult to find outside of India. But if you see it, grab it and give it a try.
Godawan 01 Single Malt Rich & Rounded Artisan Whisky
Award: Gold
Score: 94 points
Tasting Notes: “This spirit offers a refined balance of toasted oak and burnt sugar on the nose, with a rich, mellow palate featuring malty biscuit, tobacco, and subtle vanilla, culminating in a smooth, well-integrated finish.” – USA Spirits Ratings
Find Your Next Bottle: £61 / $76 / ₹5,400
Godawan takes its name from the Great Indian Bustard, an endangered bird found in Rajasthan, and Diageo India launched the brand in 2022 with a commitment to its conservation. It is made at the Alwar distillery from six-row barley grown in the region, and matures in temperatures often around 100°F.
This expression is matured in PX sherry casks, then moved into bourbon barrels treated with two Indian botanicals, Rasna and Jatamansi. A brand representative told Robb Report the botanicals are “used for sensorial purposes, more so than for taste.”
It is bottled at 46% ABV with no age statement.
Godawan has certainly made an impression since it launched, with over 125 global awards to its name to date.
Amrut Pravas Single Malt Whisky
Award: Gold
Score: 93 points
Tasting Notes: “A medium amber spirit reveals gentle pear and turbinado sugar on the nose, with a sweet malty palate, toasted cereal notes, and a smooth, lightly smoky finish.” – USA Spirits Ratings Judges
Find Your Next Bottle: GTR Exclusive
Pravas is the newest whisky on this list, and you won’t find it on regular store shelves. Amrut launched it at TFWA Singapore in May 2026 as an exclusive for duty-free and travel retail.
It comes from the same Kambipura distillery as the Cask Strength, crafted by master distiller Ashok Chokalingam, and was matured in ex-bourbon, Madeira, and Port wine casks.
The first run is 3,000 one-liter bottles at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and with no added color.
At the time of launch, Rakshit N. Jagdale, MD of Amrut Distilleries, said: “We are immensely proud to present Amrut Pravas on the global stage at TFWA Singapore. This expression is a celebration of India in every sense — diverse, vibrant, layered, and constantly evolving. Through Pravas, we wanted to create a whisky that reflects the spirit of travel and discovery while remaining deeply rooted in Indian craftsmanship and identity.”
What Do You Think?
Four producers account for the five highest-scoring Indian whiskies at this year’s USA Spirits Ratings. Indri’s Diwali release finished on top with 96 points and two special awards, and Kadamba took Single Malt Whiskey of the Year. Amrut, which was missing from the Indian results at the IWC, placed twice with a long-running cask strength bottling and a brand-new travel exclusive.
Have you tried any of these five? Are there any you would like to get your hands on, and what do you make of the awards? Let us know in the comments.

England is one of the most exciting countries in the broad ‘world whisky’ category, home to innovations in production and stand-out visitor experiences. The approval of the English whisky geographical indication (GI) in September 2026 was a turning point, recognising the techniques that set English whisky makers apart and raising awareness of their spirits around the world.
With the growing number of distilleries out there, and the amount of mature spirit coming to market, it can be hard to keep up with new releases. So, The Whiskey Wash is publishing a monthly round-up of new English whisky releases. We have an exciting batch this month including a debut single malt from Oxfordshire, a small-batch release aged in non-oak casks, and a sherry cask-matured single malt spirit.
The list includes core range and limited edition whiskies, as well as some single cask releases, released between mid-August and mid-September 2026. Data is sourced from Longshot Ventures’ Craft Spirits Reports.

Abingdon — Inaugural Release
The first single malt from Abingdon Distillery, which was founded in 2018 in its namesake town of Abingdon-on-Thames and started producing gin before pivoting to whisky. Its single malts are made with English barley and fermentation takes place in open-top washbacks, allowing some ambient yeast into the mix. The Inaugural Release has been matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-French red wine casks and bottled at 43% ABV. It’s available through the distillery website.
Bimber — The Composers
London’s Bimber Distillery has dropped three new editions in its Shoulders of Giants series, dedicated to lauded German composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Richard Wagner. All are single-cask, cask-strength releases: Johann from an ex-bourbon barrel (#413), Richard a Pedro Ximénez sherry cask (#855/63), and Wolfgang a tawny port cask (#554/51). These bottlings are available exclusively in Germany, but previous releases in the series have been distributed more widely.
Lancaster Spirits Co. — Single Malt Spirit Oloroso Cask
Strictly speaking, not a whisky, as it hasn’t reached three years of age, but I thought it was worth a call-out. This is the latest in a series of single malt spirit releases from Lancaster Spirits Co., this time bottled from a single oloroso sherry cask. It’s available to buy directly from the distillery. More and more distilleries are releasing spirits under that three-year threshold to demonstrate the progress of their new make as it ages — a useful bellwether for them, and an interesting experience for whisky fans.

READ THE STORYRosemaund — The Director’s Cut
This is Rosemaund’s third whisky release since its public debut in September 2025, after the distillery came back into the ownership of founding family the Chases. It’s a 10-year-old single malt, matured in a combination of bourbon, new oak and oloroso casks and bottled at 48% abv. A total of 3,000 individually numbered bottles have been released. Unlike the distillery’s first two whiskies, which were sold via ballot, The Director’s Cut is available to purchase online.
Retribution — PR006 Chestnut Cask
This new limited release from Somerset’s Retribution Distilling Company takes advantage of English whisky’s less prescriptive approach to maturation casks. It spent its first 13 months in new chestnut octaves, then was transferred into a refill ex-bourbon quarter cask for another two years (this cask was formerly W001, the first cask the distillery filled, numbered W066 for its second fill). The release has sold out on the distillery website but can still be found through other retailers.
White Peak — Wire Works Pineau des Charentes
A special small-batch release from Derbyshire’s White Peak Distillery, made with its trademark lightly peated spirit. This single malt was matured in first-fill bourbon barrels before being finished in a 500-litre cask that formerly held Pineau des Charentes, a French aperitif made by blending Cognac with grape juice. There are 598 bottles available, including through the distillery’s online shop.

Tiny Kentucky distillery just named top whiskey tour in North America
A tiny Kentucky distillery known for letting visitors hand-fill their own bottles straight from the barrel has just won two major tourism awards, according to a news release.
Whiskey Thief Distilling Co. was voted North America’s Leading Distillery Tour 2026 and North America’s Leading Whisk(e)y Distillery Tour 2026 at the World Travel Awards Caribbean & The Americas Gala held Oct. 11 in Jamaica.
The Franklin County distillery beat out some of Kentucky’s top distillers, including Angel’s Envy, Jim Beam and Rabbit Hole, as well as Jack Daniel’s in Tennessee, New York Distilling Co. and TX Whiskey Ranch for top distillery tour. Whiskey Thief won over Cedar Ridge Distillery, Copperworks Distilling, Jack Daniel’s Distillery and Virginia Distillery Co. for Leading Whisk(e)y Distillery Tour.
Votes were cast by travel industry professionals and the general public, with the nominee receiving the most votes named the winner.
Whiskey Thief is also a nominee for World’s Leading Distillery Tour 2026 and World’s Leading Whisk(e)y Distillery Tour 2026, alongside distilleries including Suntory Yamazaki, Jameson and The Macallan. Public voting is open at worldtravelawards.com/vote through Oct. 30.
What is Whiskey Thief?
Whiskey Thief produces about 1,000 barrels a year on a 127-acre farm. Despite its small size, it has welcomed more than 110,000 visitors, and the signature “thieving” experience has proven very popular.
“These two wins belong to our team,” said founder Walter Zausch in a statement. “More than 80 people make every guest’s visit memorable, and we are on pace for more than 150,000 visitors in 2026 to experience Whiskey Thief Distilling Co. We were the first in Kentucky to put every guest at the barrel, and we’ve been democratizing the barrel pick ever since.
“Being voted the best in a field of nominated distilleries that built American whiskey tourism tells us people don’t just want to watch how bourbon is made. They want to be part of it.”

At the same time, increased imports of cheaper Scotch due to India's free trade pact with the UK will likely weigh on sales of domestic whisky brands especially of newer blended whiskies, he said. "Before 2030, we'll see sort of flat sales because that's the quantity that we have," Jagdale told ET. "We cannot increase the quantity."
Amrut, which has a single malt inventory of 75,000 nine-litre cases, expanded distillation capacity to 1.3-1.4 million litres last year. It however can't significantly boost output in the near term as Indian single malt requires at least three years of maturation. With production constraints limiting its ability to expand sales, Amrut is broadening its portfolio beyond single malt. It has introduced blended malt whisky to tap the luxury spirits market without relying entirely on a category in which supplies can't be increased quickly.
For now, the company is holding off on major price cuts while assessing the impact of India-UK FTA. Amrut sells rum and brandy and is exploring a tie-up with Mexican distilleries to develop its own tequila brand, potentially starting with bottling in Mexico before considering a shift to India, said Jagdale. It is also planning a more affordable single malt priced about 15% below its Fusion brand in North India before December.
Amrut and Paul John were the first Indian single-malt brands, launched in the 2000s, followed by the likes of Rampur, launched by Radico Khaitan a decade ago. However, in the past few years, the market has seen a flurry of new single-malt distillers like Piccadily Agro's Indri and Kamet as well as global giants including Pernod Ricard and Diageo adding their own Indian brands like Longitude 77 and Godawan.

Fife-based independent bottler Hannah Whisky Merchant has announced the Samhain Series, a limited-edition collection of seven single-cask scotch whiskies released under its Lady of the Glen label. The range launches in October 2026 through select retailers, with labels designed by Edinburgh-based artist Steven Shand.
The series celebrates Scotland’s folklore and mythology, timed to coincide with the Celtic festival of Samhain. The roots of Halloween in Scotland lie in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, traditionally held on 31st October, the last day of the harvest, marking the turning of the seasons as summer gave way to winter.
Gregor Hannah, founder of Hannah Whisky Merchant, said: “We are really proud to release this collaborative release with fantastic artwork by Steven Shand. We have selected some of our finest casks to celebrate Samhain with carefully selected stories that celebrate a legend associated with the distillery’s location ranging from witches, hidden gold, phantom trains and magical elfs!”

Each whisky draws on a local legend tied to its distillery’s location. The seven releases span the Speyside, Highland and Islay regions.
For the labels Shand researched folklore from across Scotland and interpreted the stories into hand-drawn artworks made with fineliner, alcohol markers and acrylic.
The bottles include ‘Fionn Slays The Kranna Dhub’, a Bowmore nine-year-old Islay single malt from a first-fill bourbon barrel, limited to 268 bottles, and ‘The Eight Part Measure Of A Carle’, a Laphroaig seven-year-old from a refill barrel, limited to 137 bottles.

The collection is completed by ‘The Hidden Gold Of Largo Law’, a Cameronbridge 23-year-old single grain limited to 228 bottles; ‘The Witches Of Delnabo’, an Aultmore 13-year-old matured in a first-fill rum barrel, limited to 233 bottles; and ‘The Devil Tricks The Maid Of Bennachie’, a Glen Garioch 11-year-old limited to 239 bottles.
As with all Lady of the Glen releases, the Samhain Series is hand-bottled at natural cask strength, free of chill-filtration and retains its natural color.
Based in Fife, Hannah Whisky Merchants is an independent bottler founded by Gregor Hannah, at the age of 27 in 2012. The company produces around 40 casks annually. The label takes its name from the legend of a green lady ghost who is believed to roam the grounds of Stirling Castle.

The festive season offers an opportunity to explore premium whisky brands and discover distinctive flavours for celebrations, gifting and home-bar collections. With Navratri, Durga Puja and Diwali bringing families and friends together, India’s premium whisky segment features a wide selection of Scotch single malts, blended whiskies, Japanese expressions and American whiskey. For consumers exploring bottles priced above ₹5,000, established names such as The Macallan, Glenfiddich, Talisker and Lagavulin offer different flavour profiles, maturation styles and whisky-making traditions.
The Macallan Double Cask 12 Year Old is a popular choice for those who enjoy rich, sherry-influenced flavours. Matured in American and European oak casks seasoned with sherry, it offers notes of dried fruit, vanilla, orange and warm spices. Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Solera Reserve combines honey, raisins and cinnamon, with its distinctive maturation process contributing to a rounded flavour profile. Both are Speyside single malts suited to enthusiasts exploring premium Scotch whisky.
For those who prefer smoky and maritime flavours, Talisker 10 Year Old delivers characteristic peat smoke, sea salt and black pepper. Lagavulin 16 Year Old, from Islay, is known for its pronounced peat smoke, dried-fruit notes and long finish. These expressions offer a contrasting experience to the sweeter, fruit-forward profiles associated with many Speyside whiskies.
The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old develops its character through maturation in traditional oak followed by sherry casks, producing notes of honey, vanilla and gentle spice. The Glenlivet 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve adds richness through French oak maturation, with flavours of fruit, nuts and spices. Among premium blends, Chivas Regal 18 Year Old combines dark chocolate, dried fruit and subtle smoky notes, while Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve is recognised for its honeyed sweetness, vanilla and delicate smoke.
International alternatives also feature in the premium segment. Suntory Toki offers a lighter Japanese whisky profile suited to highballs, while Iwai Mars Tradition provides a different interpretation of Japanese blending. From the United States, Michter’s US★1 stands out for its caramel, spice and toasted-oak character.
Prices vary significantly across Indian states because of excise duties, local taxation, retailer margins and availability. Buyers should check local retail prices before purchasing. Together, these ten expressions showcase the diversity of the premium whisky market, spanning approachable blends, complex single malts and distinctive international styles for informed festive-season selection.
Scotch-Inspired Style: Todd Snyder & Lagavulin Toast ‘Time & Craft’ Capsule Collection
The luxury Scotch-inspired drop draws on classic Scottish textiles and the Islay heritage of the legendary whisky maker.
The stylish menswear sensibility of Todd Snyder meets the venerable Scotch whisky heritage of Lagavulin with the new Todd Snyder x Lagavulin Time & Craft Collection, a luxe limited-edition offering that’s built on enduring craftsmanship and Scottish inspiration.
Bolstered by a rugged-meets-refined campaign shot on Islay itself and starring The Gilded Age actor Ben Ahlers, the six-piece assortment celebrates legendary Scottish tartan and Fair Isle designs. The campaign and collection also drew heavy inspiration from Lagavulin’s classic 16-year-old Scotch. For Snyder, the award-winning designer took the chance to dive wholeheartedly into the world of his favorite whisky maker.
“As I learned more about how Lagavulin 16-Year-Old is made, I found a lot that felt familiar: The care that goes into choosing materials, knowledge built over generations, and a necessary patience for the process,” Snyder said in a statement. “I wanted the collection to reflect that approach, as well as the character of Islay, in pieces people could wear and live with.” It marks the first major spirits partnership for the Iowa-born designer, a famously prolific figure who recently launched his Fall/Winter 2026 “American Form” Collection and partnered with Land Rover on a rugged Defender SUV collab earlier this year.
The opportunity to experience the windswept Islay landscape while wearing a range of Todd Snyder x Lagavulin apparel and accessories (like a remarkable suede stable jacket) proved impactful for Ahlers, its campaign star. “Being at Lagavulin, you see what it takes to carry more than 200 years of craft forward,” Ahlers said. “I met people who’ve spent decades at the distillery, passing their knowledge on to the next generation. That experience shapes the whisky, and you can feel the pride people take in making it,” adding that he felt a similar sense of care went into Snyder’s expertly curated capsule designs.
The campaign assuredly takes the Lagavulin story to heart, featuring appearances by 50-plus-year Lagavulin veteran, former Warehouse Manager Iain “Pinky” McArthur, plus 42-year Lagavulin employee Donnie MacKinnon and his grandson, Shane, among other Islay and Scotch world fixtures.
“Those people are as much a part of Lagavulin’s story as the landscape itself, bringing the knowledge and connection to Islay that inspired the collection into the campaign,” the Diageo-owned distiller said. Pieces from the collection stand out in striking fashion against the distiller’s rustic home, as a 100% wool tweed chore jacket harkens back to the distillery’s signature shade of olive green.
A hand-stitched wool tie leans on the Lagavulin Islay Tartan pattern, while a custom Fair Isle pattern adorns a superfine merino wool beanie that takes its cues from the Scottish moors. The same pattern appears on a striking Fair Isle sweater jacket, while a tartan-pattern wool scarf bolsters seasonal warmth on brisk Islay days (as would a dram of Lagavulin 16, of course).

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Cù Bòcan Creation 9: Tomatin’s sweet and salty popcorn single malt is 17 years old and costs £45 - https://thedailywhisky.com/
Cù Bòcan Creation 9 is the ninth limited edition in the Creations series from Cù Bòcan, the experimental single malt brand made at Tomatin Distillery in the Scottish Highlands. Inspired by cinema popcorn, it combines American virgin oak casks for sweetness with Manzanilla sherry casks for a salty, savoury edge. Aged for over 17 years, it is the oldest Creation so far. It is bottled at 46% ABV in a 70cl bottle and priced at £45. Tomatin Collective members get first access before general release, and it is already listed at Hard To Find Whisky.
The ninth Cù Bòcan Creation is built around a single idea: the moment the lights go down in a cinema and you reach into a bucket of popcorn that is somehow both sweet and salty. Cù Bòcan Creation 9 chases that flavour with a cask pairing we haven’t seen in the series before, American virgin oak and Manzanilla sherry.
The concept is playful. The specs are serious. This is a single malt aged for at least 17 years, the oldest whisky the Creations series has released, and it costs £45.
What is Cù Bòcan Creation 9?
Cù Bòcan Creation 9 is a limited edition Highland single malt Scotch whisky from Cù Bòcan, the experimental brand that Tomatin Distillery builds around its lightly peated spirit. Each Creation pairs two cask types in a combination designed to tell a specific flavour story.
For Creation 9, that story is sweet and salted popcorn. The American virgin oak provides the sweetness, the Manzanilla sherry casks provide the salt, and the two are married together to land somewhere between the toffee bucket and the salted one.
It is bottled at 46% ABV in a 70cl bottle, with an age statement of over 17 years, and the recommended price is £45.
Two casks, one bucket: how the popcorn note is built
The interesting part of Creation 9 is how cleanly each cask has been given a job.
American virgin oak has never held another liquid before the whisky goes in. That means the wood gives everything it has straight to the spirit: vanilla, caramel and baking spice in a much more concentrated form than a refilled bourbon barrel would offer. According to Tomatin, these casks bring cinnamon French toast, buttery sweetness and spiced orange.
Manzanilla is the counterweight. It is a pale, bone-dry style of sherry made only in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a coastal town at the mouth of the Guadalquivir river in Andalusia. It ages under a layer of yeast called flor, and the Atlantic air there is widely credited with giving Manzanilla its famous saline, almost briny character. Tomatin says its Manzanilla casks contribute salted caramel, sour apple and toasted almonds.
Put the two together and you get the logic of the release. One cask brings butter and sugar, the other brings salt and a nutty, savoury snap. That is popcorn.
It also isn’t the first time Tomatin has worked with this sherry style. The distillery’s Sherry Collection opened with a Manzanilla Edition, so there is real house experience with what these casks do to its spirit.
Who is Cù Bòcan and why the Creations series matters
Tomatin Distillery sits in the Highlands south of Inverness and was founded in 1897. It is best known for its fruity, unpeated house style, but for a few weeks every winter the distillery switches to peated barley and produces Cù Bòcan.
That peated run was revived in 2005 using barley peated to around 15ppm (parts per million of phenols, the standard measure of peat intensity), which places it firmly in lightly peated territory. Cù Bòcan launched as a brand in 2013. The name means “ghost dog” in Gaelic, after a spectral hound said to haunt the village of Tomatin.
The Creations series began in 2019 and has become the brand’s playground for unusual cask pairings. Creation #4 combined Tawny Port and Cognac casks. Creation #7 paired Pineau des Charentes Rouge with American virgin oak to mark twenty years of peated production at Tomatin. Creation #8, released earlier this year, matured the spirit in Canadian ice wine and Spanish Verdejo casks, believed to be a first for a peated Scotch, and was limited to 3,600 bottles.
Creation #8 was described as the oldest release in the series at the time. Creation 9 pushes that further, past the 17-year mark. With a peated run that only restarted in 2005, a 17-year-old Cù Bòcan comes from some of the earliest stock of the modern era.
Cù Bòcan Creation 9 tasting notes (distillery notes)
We haven’t tasted Creation 9 yet, so the notes below are Tomatin’s own, broken down by cask as the distillery presents them.
Cù Bòcan Creation 9: distillery tasting notes
American virgin oak casks: cinnamon French toast, buttery sweetness, spiced orange Manzanilla sherry casks: salted caramel, sour apple, toasted almonds Combined profile: sweet and salted popcorn
ABV: 46% | Age: 17+ years | Cask type: American virgin oak + Manzanilla sherry | Bottle: 70cl | Price: £45
Cù Bòcan Creation 9 price and availability
Cù Bòcan Creation 9 is priced at £45 for 70cl.
Members of The Tomatin Collective, the distillery’s own membership club, have been given the chance to buy before the general release. At the time of writing, the bottle is also listed at Hard To Find Whisky for £45. The specialist retailers are the place to look as stock rolls out.
Tomatin’s previous Creations have reached specialist retailers across the UK and Europe, and Hard To Find Whisky ships internationally. Readers outside the UK should check delivery to their country before ordering, as shipping options for spirits vary by market.
The bottle count for Creation 9 hasn’t been confirmed. As a reference point, Creation #8 was limited to 3,600 bottles worldwide.
Is Cù Bòcan Creation 9 worth £45?
On paper, this is one of the most compelling price points we’ve seen this year. A 17-year-old single malt for £45 is rare in today’s market, and Tomatin has priced it in line with its younger siblings rather than charging extra for the age.
It is for the drinker who enjoys experimental cask work but still wants the depth that comes with long maturation. If you like sweet, dessert-leaning whisky with a savoury twist, or you have been collecting the Creations series, it is an easy decision.
It is less suited to anyone after a big, smoky dram. Cù Bòcan’s peat is gentle by design, and with over 17 years in oak and a cask pairing built around sweetness and salinity, we expect the wood to take centre stage.
If the popcorn idea has caught your attention, don’t wait for the reviews to pile up. Previous Creations have sold steadily through specialist shops, and at this price, Creation 9 is likely to move quickly.

Big Peat Winter Edition 2026 is a limited seasonal release of Douglas Laing’s Islay blended malt, and the first Big Peat Winter Edition to carry an age statement. The whisky is 10 years old and spent the final 16 months of its maturation in hand-selected French red wine casks. Last winter, Big Peat got a Winter Edition for the first time. For the second, Douglas Laing has given its peaty Islay blend something new to stand on: a 10-year age statement and 16 months in French red wine casks.
The Big Peat Winter Edition 2026 is out now at 48% ABV and £65 a bottle. We poured our first dram of it in a vineyard, which turned out to be exactly the right place to meet a whisky that spent its final chapter in wine wood.

What is Big Peat? Islay in a bottle, from four distilleries
Big Peat is Douglas Laing’s Islay blended malt. It is made only from single malts distilled on Islay, with no grain whisky in the mix. That is what “blended malt” means on a Scotch label: single malts from more than one distillery, married together.
Douglas Laing names four distilleries behind the Big Peat character. Caol Ila brings sweetness, Bowmore the balance, Ardbeg a medicinal and earthy quality, and Port Ellen a degree of elegance. Together they cover a wide range of what Islay peat can do, from coastal and sweet to deep and earthy.
Big Peat sits in the Remarkable Regional Malts range, where each blend captures one Scotch whisky region. Its stablemates include Scallywag for Speyside, Timorous Beastie for the Highlands and Rock Island for the islands. Douglas Laing itself is a family-owned independent bottler based in Glasgow, founded in 1948.
How the Winter Edition fits the Big Peat calendar
Big Peat has a long tradition of seasonal bottlings, best known for its annual Christmas Edition at natural cask strength. In 2025 Douglas Laing added a Winter Edition alongside it for the first time, finished in Madeira casks and bottled at 53.6% ABV.
The 2026 Winter Edition takes the idea somewhere new on three counts: a stated age of 10 years, a French red wine cask finish and a bottling strength of 48%. It reads as a release built for depth and fruit around the smoke, rather than sheer power.
The packaging tells the same story. The new box pairs French wine country with Islay’s rugged coastline, a nod to both the cask and the island.
Why French red wine casks suit Big Peat
Red wine casks tend to bring three things to a whisky: dark fruit, spice and tannin. With a heavily peated spirit, the tannin matters as much as the fruit. It gives the palate a frame, so the smoke and the fruit have something to sit on.
Sixteen months is long enough for the wine wood to add a clear layer, but short enough that the Islay core stays in charge. Douglas Laing describes the goal as a whisky with the poise of a mature wine vintage, with Islay DNA at its centre.
That matches what we found in the glass. The smoke arrives first and stays in front, and the red wine character comes in behind it rather than covering it. At 48% ABV there is enough weight to carry both. Taste it neat first, then try a few drops of water if you want the fruit to step forward.
Our tasting notes: Big Peat Winter Edition 2026
Tasted by The Daily Whisky team, autumn 2026, in a vineyard setting.
Big Peat Winter Edition 2026: tasting notes
Nose: Islay peat smoke, unmistakable from the very first sniff
Palate: Smoke fills the mouth first, then opens into ripe, fruity notes with a gentle grip of tannin from the red wine casks
Finish: Douglas Laing describes it as long, with home-baking spice and lingering dry peat smoke
ABV: 48% | Cask: French red wine cask finish (16 months) | Price: £65
Our verdict in one line: A delicious smoky dram, with the fruit from the wine casks woven right through it.
Douglas Laing’s official notes, in brief
Nose: Maritime peat smoke, sweet malt, dark forest fruits, spice, polished oak
Palate: Vanilla, butterscotch, salted caramel, black cherry, ripe plum, dark chocolate, a subtle nuttiness
Finish: Long, with baking spice and dry peat smoke
Price and where to buy Big Peat Winter Edition
Big Peat Winter Edition 2026 costs £65 for a 70cl bottle direct from douglaslaing.com. UK specialists such as The Whisky Exchange have listed it at around £60 to £64 at the time of writing.
Douglas Laing ships within the UK and to most of Europe, including Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Ireland and Switzerland, with European delivery from £24. According to Douglas Laing, EU orders are not charged local customs duties on arrival.
Further afield, the bottler ships to markets including Australia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, New Zealand and around 20 US states, with delivery from £45 and local duty paid by the customer on arrival.
Is Big Peat Winter Edition 2026 worth £65?
Yes, if you already like Big Peat and want a richer, fruitier seasonal version with a stated age. A 10 year old Islay blended malt at 48%, with natural colour and no chill-filtration, is fair value at £65.
It is also a strong pick for peat drinkers curious about red wine casks, because the smoke never gets lost. And in its winter box, it makes an easy gift for the smoky-whisky drinker in your life.
It is less suited to anyone after full cask-strength intensity, which is the Christmas Edition’s territory, or to drinkers who want wine cask fruit without peat. This is a smoke-first whisky.
Winter Editions are limited, and Big Peat seasonals tend to move quickly once the gifting season starts. If it appeals, buy it in October or November rather than waiting for December. For another take on Big Peat and wine-style casks this year, compare it with the PX sherry-finished Big Peat Fèis Ìle 2026.

What is Scallywag Winter Edition?
Scallywag is Douglas Laing’s Speyside entry in its Remarkable Regional Malts range, a family of blended malts built to express the character of a single Scottish region. Speyside, for readers outside Scotland, is the area around the River Spey in the north-east, home to more malt distilleries than anywhere else in the country.
A blended malt means only single malt whiskies go into the bottle, no grain whisky. Douglas Laing describes Scallywag as a marriage of aged Speyside single malts matured predominantly in Spanish sherry casks, and the brand is named after a long line of fox terriers kept by the Laing family. That terrier is on every label.
The Winter Edition has been a fixture since 2020. The first editions were all about sherry, matured exclusively in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez butts. In recent years Douglas Laing has used the release to experiment with finishes: orange wine casks for 2024, ice wine casks from Eastern Europe for 2025, and now Cognac for 2026.
| Edition | Cask | ABV | Bottles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | Oloroso and PX sherry | 52.6% | 3,000 |
| 2021 | Oloroso and PX sherry | 53.1% | 4,200 |
| 2022 | Oloroso and PX sherry | 54.0% | 5,400 |
| 2025 | Ice wine cask finish | 52.4% | Not disclosed |
| 2026 | Cognac cask finish | 54.2% | 5,100 |
What the Cognac cask brings to a sherried Speyside malt
Cognac is a grape brandy from the Charente region of south-west France, aged in French oak. Casks that have held it tend to give whisky dried and candied fruit, a soft floral lift and a gentle spice from the oak, rather than the heavier, darker weight of a sherry butt.
That makes it a natural partner for Scallywag. The house style already leans into dried fruit, chocolate and spice from the sherry casks, so the Cognac finish is layering in a similar direction rather than pulling against it. Douglas Laing frames the result as building on Scallywag’s rich, sherried character with extra dried fruit, warming spice and citrus sweetness.
The cask strength matters here too. At 54.2%, the whisky has enough concentration to carry both the sherry and the Cognac influence, and it gives you the option of adding a few drops of water to open up the fruit.

Palate: Rich and syrupy; sultanas, plum compote and black cherry up front, then baking spice and chocolate-covered orange

ABV: 54.2% | Cask type: Sherry casks, Cognac cask finish | Price:£60
Our take
We have had Scallywag Winter Edition 2026 in the glass, and it is a delicious dram. The texture is soft and rounded, with plenty of deep sherry notes and a fullness that comes from rich caramel.
Then the Cognac casks step in. They bring a clear note of orange that runs through the whole dram, and that is what makes this edition stand apart from the Scallywag you already know. The sherry gives depth, the Cognac gives brightness.
There is no age statement on the bottle, but in the glass it has the body of a 10-year-old sherry-cask whisky. For a cask strength release at £60, that weight and depth is a big part of its appeal.
A design built around winter
The 2026 packaging leans fully into the season: snow-covered mountains, a rich red palette and gold detailing, with the Scallywag terrier front and centre. The box carries the line “The Ultimate Reward”, which sums up how Douglas Laing positions this one: a dram to open at the end of a cold day, or to put under the tree for someone who already has a well-stocked shelf.
With a limited run and a design that changes every year, the Winter Edition has also become something of a collector’s line. Owners of past editions will want this one next to them.
Who is Douglas Laing?
Douglas Laing & Co. is a family-owned whisky company based in Glasgow, founded in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing. Today it is run by his son Fred Laing and granddaughter Cara Laing, and it has grown from blending into one of Scotland’s best-known independent bottlers, with single cask ranges such as Old Particular and Xtra Old Particular alongside the Remarkable Regional Malts.
Big Peat (Islay), Timorous Beastie (Highland), Rock Island (the islands), The Epicurean (Lowland) and The Gauldrons (Campbeltown) sit alongside Scallywag in that regional range. Douglas Laing also owns Strathearn Distillery in Perthshire, its first distillery, acquired in 2019.
Price and availability
Scallywag Winter Edition 2026 has an RRP of £60 for 70cl and is available now direct from douglaslaing.com. At the time of writing, The Whisky Exchange lists it at £59.25.
Douglas Laing’s own web shop delivers within the UK, to most of Europe (including Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway) and to selected countries further afield, including Australia, Japan, Singapore and parts of the US. Orders to the EU carry no extra customs charges for the buyer; outside the UK and EU, local duty is paid on delivery. Expect it in specialist whisky shops worldwide over the coming weeks.
With 5,100 bottles shared across all markets, this is not a release that will sit on shelves through to spring.
Who is it for?
Scallywag Winter Edition 2026 is for drinkers who like their Speyside rich, fruity and sherry-led, and who want to see what a Cognac cask adds to that profile. It is also an easy pick for anyone collecting the Winter Edition series, and a strong gift bottle at £60, given the cask strength and limited run.
If you prefer a lighter, more floral or orchard-fruit Speyside style, last year’s ice wine edition or a different bottling may suit you better. This one is about depth and warmth.

What do a bottled-in-bond bourbon sold only in Kentucky, an American whiskey finished in casks from the Scottish island of Jura, and a blend first created for Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation have in common? All three are among the seven whiskies named Trophy winners at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) 2026 last week.
The IWSC awarded 24 Spirits Trophies, and whisky took Trophies in the Bourbon, American, Irish, Worldwide, and three Scotch categories. We have already covered the Scotch winners, so today we are taking a step back and looking at how all seven are made, who made them, and the history behind each one.
How Are The IWSC Trophies Awarded?
The IWSC began in 1969 and says it is “often referred to as the ‘Olympics of the drinks industry’.” It now evaluates more than 12,000 entries a year from over 90 countries.

This whiskey scored higher than any other entry in the IWSC’s North American judging. Bardstown Bourbon Company Lochs of Jura Barrel Finish is a blend of 49% 11-year-old Indiana bourbon, 30% 10-year-old Indiana rye, and 21% 12-year-old Kentucky bourbon, placing it in the American whiskey category.
The blend spent 32 months in casks that had held single malt on the Isle of Jura, which were made up of 84% ex-bourbon and 16% ex-sherry barrels. The sherry casks were too big for the ricks, so they stayed in the warehouse aisles. The whiskey is bottled at 104 proof (52% ABV).

Thompson Willett established Willett Distillery in Bardstown in 1936, but the Old Bardstown brand has not always been made there.
According to Breaking Bourbon, the distillery stopped producing bourbon during the 1970s energy crisis. By the early 1980s, the company had been renamed Kentucky Bourbon Distillers and was sourcing whiskey for Old Bardstown, believed to be mostly from Heaven Hill.
Willett returned to distilling in 2012 and started moving the brand over to its own spirit in 2016, the year this bottled-in-bond expression was released.
The bourbon uses what Willett calls the original family mash bill of 72% corn, 13% rye, and 15% malted barley, and it enters the barrel at 125 proof.
To be labeled bottled-in-bond, it must come from one distilling season at a single distillery, be aged for at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and be bottled at 100 proof. Willett distributes it only in Kentucky.

Teeling’s 20-year-old single malt was finished in a Mongolian oak cask. Quercus Mongolica is a species of deciduous broadleaf that, when used in whisky maturation, gives a smooth mouthfeel thanks to the lack of tannins compared to other types of oak. It also gives similar flavors to Mizunara oak.
The whiskey is older than Teeling’s own distillery in Dublin. It was distilled and partly matured at Cooley Distillery before being moved to Teeling. It is bottled at 45.9% ABV, and only 276 bottles were released.
The Teeling family established Cooley in 1987, and the family’s history in Dublin distilling goes back to 1782, when Walter Teeling set up a distillery on Marrowbone Lane. John Teeling’s sons, Jack and Stephen, opened the current distillery in the Liberties in 2015.
This release is part of Teeling’s run of 20-year-old distillery exclusives, which has also included a Cognac cask edition.

Here we have one of the peculiarities that sometimes make their way into international competitions: a whiskey distilled in Ireland and aged in Taiwan.
Wan Ja Shan is best known in Taiwan as a soy sauce maker. The Drinks Business reports that it was founded after Japan withdrew from Taiwan at the end of the Second World War. In 2016, it brought in Dr Frank Lin, who spent 38 years at the state-run Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation, as a whiskey consultant.
The Dawu name was adopted in 2023 and comes from Dawu Mountain in Pingtung County, in the south of the island.
The label on this bottle states that it was distilled in Ireland and aged in Taiwan, but it does not name the Irish distillery. Wan Ja Shan is based in Pingtung, where the company has built a maturation facility with temperature and humidity controls, powered by solar panels on its factory roofs.
The whiskey carries no age statement and is bottled at 54.9% ABV.

Bowmore still runs its own malt barn, and according to the distillery, the barley there is turned by hand every four hours, day and night. It is then dried in a kiln with two furnaces, where peat smoke rises through a mesh floor to the malt above. Fermentation takes place in six two-story Oregon pine washbacks, each named after a person or family from the distillery’s history, and the spirit is distilled in four stills.

Moray politicians call on UK Government to ease whisky taxes in next Autumn Budget
Two Moray politicians are calling on the UK Government to stop a "sustained attack" on the Scottish whisky industry.
Graham Leadbitter MP (Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey, SNP) and Laura Mitchell MSP (Moray, SNP) have called on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to "undo the damage inflicted on Scotland’s world-famous industry".
The SNP politicians hit out at the previous Labour government under Keir Starmer, when spirits duty was raised 3.6 per cent for each of the two years it set budgets.
The Moray representatives pointed out: "Labour's whisky tax has increased by 17 per cent over the past three years".
It is worth noting that, while 7.3 per cent of this increase was from the two rises previously mentioned under Labour’s Rachel Reeves, 10.1 per cent was carried out by the last Conservative autumn budget in 2023, which had the highest single-step rise in the tax in 50 years.
The letter addresses concerns about the viability of the whisky industry and the need for its protection, specifically in Moray.
Moray contains a third of all whisky distillers in Scotland, with one in nine jobs in the area tied to whisky, and jobs coming under threat by "global cost-cutting programmes".
These all came after Keir Starmer's 2023 promise to "back Scotch producers to the hilt".
The letter in full reads:
“Dear Chancellor,
“As you know, your crippling tax on Scotch Whisky is costing jobs and the Treasury billions in lost revenues.
“The Labour Party promised distilleries you would back them “to the hilt”, but instead you have diluted the status of our premier product and hiked duty by 17%.
“Whisky is Scotland’s premier product with our world-famous national drink in high demand all over the world. The industry enhances our country’s international reputation and delivers economic growth.
“Nowhere is this the case more than in our constituencies in Moray – home to one third of all Scotland’s distilleries. The industry supports over 5,000 jobs in the area with more than one in nine people employed in whisky production.
“You must call off this sustained attack on our whisky industry with 1000 jobs lost last year alone and one in four distilleries planning further cuts, costing the Treasury over £1.1bn in lost revenues.
“First Minister John Swinney took the case for our industry right to the heart of the White House and we secured an end to crippling tariffs. It’s high time that your government makes the same commitment to our trade and you cease your attack on the industry when you stand at the despatch box later this month.
“Yours sincerely, Laura Mitchell, MSP for Moray and Graham Leadbitter, MP for Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey”
Indian whisky is among the best-selling whisky in the world. But did you know that many Indian whiskies contain a surprising ingredient? Some of their flavour and character actually comes from Scotland. How does that work, and why is Scotch whisky used in Indian whisky?
India’s population of around 1.44 billion—the largest in the world—naturally helps boost the sales figures of Indian whisky. But did you also know that Scotch whisky is often used in the production of Indian whisky?
Why is Scotch whisky used in Indian whisky?
The fact that India doesn’t have to follow Scotch whisky regulations makes things a little easier.
Take McDowell’s No.1, for example, which is marketed by United Spirits Limited, a subsidiary of
Diageo. This Indian whisky is made in part from alcohol distilled from sugarcane or grain, blended with a proportion of Scotch whisky, often between 5% and 15%. The Scotch component adds extra complexity and character to the Indian whisky.
Taste is, of course, a matter of personal preference. That’s why the difference between a blend and a single malt is often a lively topic of conversation whenever whisky lovers get together.
What’s actually in Indian whisky?
Let’s take another look at Indian whisky, which doesn’t have to meet the same production standards as whisky from the European Union, the United Kingdom or the United States.
Broadly speaking, some
Indian whisky is made from three components. And in India, that’s perfectly legal. The first is extra-neutral alcohol made from molasses. The second is grain alcohol, produced using wheat, rice or corn. The third is Scotch whisky, usually making up around 5% to 15% of the blend.
That’s how well-known brands such as Officer’s Choice, Royal Stag and Imperial Blue are sold in huge quantities in bars and shops across India. But do the people who drink these whiskies know that some of their drink’s complexity and character comes from Scotland?
FAQ
- What’s the difference between Indian whisky and Scotch whisky?
Scotch whisky must be aged for at least three years in oak casks and meet strict legal requirements. India has different rules, and Indian whisky may be made using alcohol derived from molasses or grain.
- Why is Scotch whisky added to Indian whisky?
Scotch whisky is added to some Indian whiskies to give them more flavour, complexity and character. It usually makes up a relatively small proportion of the blend.
- Which Indian whisky brands are popular worldwide?
Well-known Indian whisky brands include McDowell’s No.1, Officer’s Choice, Royal Stag and Imperial Blue. These whiskies are sold in enormous quantities, particularly in India.
Cù Bòcan, the lightly peated, experimental single malt brand produced at Tomatin Distillery each winter, has announced the launch of the ninth release in its limited-edition Creation Series. Its oldest release to date, it takes inspiration from the sweet and salty taste of cinema popcorn.
Cù Bòcan Creation #9 (46% ABV) is a single malt Scotch whisky, matured in a combination of American virgin oak, refill hogsheads and Manzanilla Sherry casks.
Aged for more than 17 years, the majority of the spirit spent its entire maturation in American virgin oak casks, which are rarely used for such an extended period. The result is said to deliver layers of vanilla, honey and caramel sweetness.
The remaining spirit spent 13 years in refill hogsheads before undergoing a four-and-a-half-year finish in Manzanilla Sherry casks. Made from Palomino grapes in Sanlúcar de Barrameda on Spain’s Cádiz coast, Manzanilla is a pale, bone-dry fortified wine. Its casks impart a signature salinity, adding notes of salted caramel, toasted almond and coastal freshness to the spirit.
Together, the two cask types create the sweet-and-salty popcorn note that defines Creation #9. This playful indulgence extends to the packaging, whose popcorn-box aesthetic evokes classic cinema nostalgia and makes the whisky the perfect companion for a movie night.
Crafted annually at Tomatin Distillery in the Scottish Highlands during the cold winter months, Cù Bòcan’s limited-edition Creation Series celebrates experimental cask combinations and distinctive flavour profiles. The series draws inspiration from the lightly peated spirit historically produced at the distillery more than 100 years ago.
Commenting on the launch, Jamie Muir, Distillery Manager at Tomatin, said: “Creation #9 set out to prove that patience pays off in the most unexpected ways. The American virgin oak has given the single malt its deep, sweet backbone, but it’s the Manzanilla sherry cask that elevates the expression, bringing in the salty, savoury edge that balances all the sweetness. The result is one of the most unexpected flavours we’ve crafted. It’s exactly the kind of discovery that makes the Creation Series so exciting, and the perfect excuse for a movie night.”
Limited to 3,800 bottles, Cù Bòcan Creation #9 is available now from the distillery’s website and specialist retailers, for a RRP of £45.00.

Award-winning Baltimore-based distillery Sagamore Whiskey has made its name in rye. Now, the community-focused maker is flexing its bourbon prowess, bringing its High Rye Straight Bourbon to flavour lovers in the UK.
Sagamore remains rooted in its commitment to locally sourced grains, non-GMO ingredients, and supporting its community of farmers. But with a new twist on its rye signature, this bottling pays homage to Kentucky’s bourbon traditions while building on Maryland’s whiskey heritage.
High Rye Straight Bourbon Whiskey is made using a mash bill of 75 per cent corn, 20 per cent rye and 5 per cent malted barley. After milling and mashing, it’s aged for six years in new charred American white oak barrels. The results are complex, intricate, and layered — just like the signature distillery character the team at Sagamore has nurtured.
Its inviting nose opens with honeycomb, vanilla ice cream, milk chocolate, and baking spices, before complex herbs and stone fruits emerge with time. On the palate, a dense, luxuriously creamy texture holds tiramisu, red berry, liquorice, and star anise notes, alongside rocket leaf, hazelnut praline, and dried citrus peels. A strikingly long finish unfolds into a caramelised nuttiness with even more baking spices, and a lingering deep earthiness.
“This High Rye Straight Bourbon is something we’ve been eager to share nationwide — a whiskey crafted for those who enjoy both bourbon and rye flavours that makes for a memorable pour,” said Ryan Norwood, master distiller at Sagamore Whiskey. “We’re thrilled to share this release with whiskey fans who appreciate something truly distinctive.”
Sagamore Whiskey is at the forefront of the modern craft distilling wave in the US. Founded in 2013, it has revived one of America’s oldest whiskey-making traditions: Maryland-style rye. While Kentucky has become synonymous with the corn grown to produce bourbon, Maryland’s farmers have an even longer history of cultivating rye. In the coastal north-east, the area around Baltimore has rich, fertile soil, perfect for arable farming. Over time, the state’s growers became known for their flavoursome grains, which were used to create whiskeys bursting with character, balance, and expressiveness. It’s not surprising that these ryes played a starring role in early American cocktail culture, even before Prohibition.
It’s a tradition the Sagamore team brought full circle with the opening of its waterfront Baltimore distillery in 2017. The thoroughly innovative, state-of-the-art maker prizes its bold mash bill recipes and expert blending techniques. Led by Norwood, the Sagamore whiskey makers are reestablishing Maryland rye as an essential go-to style. Since the brand was founded, it’s picked up more than 200 international awards in recognition of its quality.
The philosophy behind the distillery is fascinating, too. Modern doesn’t just mean high-tech. It also means taking care of the planet and the local community. Through grain-to-glass approaches, a commitment to avoiding GMO grains, and working closely with local growers, Sagamore has crafted a collection of whiskeys that aren’t just delicious — they’re rooted in good, too. Plus, there’s that authentic Maryland character in every bottle.
According to Norwood, that signature profile translates as “depth”, “but it’s still approachable and easy to enjoy”. There’s an inherent balance too, which makes each bottling – including Sagamore Whiskey High Rye Straight Bourbon – perfect for sipping neat and mixing in an array of cocktails.
Sagamore’s High Rye Straight Bourbon is set to be in high demand in the UK. While standard American sales are forecast to decline from now until 2030, super-premium whiskey bottlings are predicted to grow by four per cent with ultra-premium releases to climb by two per cent. UK drinkers clearly have good taste, looking for top-quality, interesting expressions. Priced with an RRP of £45, the High Rye Bourbon is a special whiskey indeed, perfect for cracking open with friends and pairing with great conversation.
Sagamore Whiskey High Rye Straight Bourbon is available now via the Whisky Exchange (£44.95, 43% ABV).

The Bradford House Historical Association will host its annual Whiskey Rebellion Dinner on Friday, November 6, at the Hilton Garden Inn Southpointe. The organization’s largest annual fundraiser will bring together supporters, community leaders and whiskey enthusiasts for an evening of food, spirits, history and friendly competition.
This year’s dinner comes during a milestone year for the Bradford House Museum, which earlier this year earned national accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums. Only approximately 3% of museums nationwide hold this prestigious distinction.
“The Whiskey Rebellion Dinner is always one of my favorite nights of the year, but this year is especially meaningful as we celebrate the Bradford House Museum’s national accreditation,” said Tracie Liberatore, executive director of the Bradford House Historical Association. “This accomplishment belongs to our Board, staff, volunteers and everyone who supports our mission. The dinner gives us a chance to celebrate together while raising the funds that help us preserve our historic sites and provide more than 50 public programs each year.”
The evening begins at 6 p.m. with the Peacock Keller Reception, featuring passed hors d’oeuvres, specialty Scotch and whiskey cocktails, and premium beer and wine. Guests can also bid on a variety of silent auction items, including an autographed Rocky Bleier whiskey bottle, a handmade whiskey board by Allan Jack and rare and hard-to-find spirits.
Dinner begins at 7 p.m., followed by the return of the popular Great Whiskey Debate. Representatives of Scotch and American whiskey will take the stage to make their case for which spirit reigns supreme, with plenty of audience participation encouraged. Scotch supporters are invited to wear their finest kilts, while whiskey loyalists can show their colors in red, white and blue.
Guests will also enjoy a pre-set tasting flight featuring Laphroaig 10 Year, Laphroaig 14 Year Sherry Finish Limited Edition, Old Grand-Dad 7 Year 114 Proof Single Barrel and Old Overholt Rye Cask Strength 11 Year.
Individual tickets are $160, and groups are encouraged to reserve full tables of eight. Formal dinner sponsorships are also available. Each attendee will receive a bottle of whiskey to take home.
Current sponsors include Baird, Beam Suntory, EQT, Graziani Homes, Peacock Keller, Washington Auto Mall, Washington County Bar Association and WesBanco.
Guests are encouraged to drink responsibly. Washington Auto Mall will provide complimentary rides home within a 15-mile radius, and the Hilton Garden Inn is offering a discounted room rate of $129 per night.
Registration is required and seating is assigned. Physical tickets will not be distributed; guests should check in at the registration desk upon arrival for their table assignment.
For tickets, sponsorship information and additional details, visit the events tab on BradfordHouse.org or contact the Bradford House Historical Association at 724-222-3604 or info@bradfordhouse.org.
