This marks the fourth consecutive year Yamazaki has earned a Trophy in the Japanese Whisky category
NEW YORK, Oct. 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Suntory Global Spirits, a world leader in premium spirits, today announced that The House of Suntory's Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky 25 Years Old has been awarded a Trophy at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) 2026, the competition's highest honor in the Japanese Whisky category. The award marks the fourth consecutive year a Yamazaki whisky has received this accolade.
Why is Yamazaki 25 Years Old's International Spirits Challenge 2026 win significant?
- This latest achievement marks the fourth consecutive year that Yamazaki has earned the competition's honor in the Japanese Whisky category: Yamazaki 25 Years Old in 2023, Yamazaki 12 Years Old in 2024, and Yamazaki 18 Years Old in 2025.
- This achievement reinforces Yamazaki's position among the world's premier spirits and underscores Suntory Global Spirits' leadership in exceptional whisky.
- The recognition also reinforces the importance of upholding the Japanese Whisky standards set by the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association, standards that help protect the authenticity, heritage and craftsmanship behind the category. As the association's logo begins to roll out across The House of Suntory's authentic Japanese Whisky products, consumers will have an easier way to identify whiskies that meet these standards.
"Yamazaki 25 Years Old was first introduced in 1999, and in 2021 we evolved the whisky to more intentionally express Tsukuriwake — the diversity of our whisky‑making — and Tsukurikomi — the refinement and mastery behind our craft." said Suntory Chief Blender, Shinji Fukuyo. "Seeing Yamazaki 25 Years Old receive this prestigious recognition today is profoundly meaningful for our entire team. It affirms the continuity of our craftsmanship across generations and our unwavering commitment to creating whiskies that honor Yamazaki's legacy while continuing to evolve."
What is the International Spirits Challenge and how are its awards judged?
The International Spirits Challenge is one of the industry's most prestigious competitions, judged by a panel of world-renowned experts who assess spirits for quality, balance, and character.
International Spirits Challenge judges noted: "There's a reason Yamazaki is so widely accepted as a global benchmark in quality whisky. The combination of texture and fruitiness, the multiple layers - it has everything happening within it to make me want just a little bit more."
What does Yamazaki 25 Years Old taste like?
- Color: Amber
- Nose: Mizunara smoky notes of incense, followed by a complex bouquet of mature kaki persimmon and ume plum notes.
- Palate: A smoky first sip of Mizunara sandalwood notes that open and deepen into complex layers of kaki persimmon subtle sweetness, tart ume plum notes and gentle shoga ginger spicy notes.
- Finish: Profound long finish with Mizunara smokiness and lingering subtly sweet wood notes that remain.
What other notable awards did The House of Suntory win?
- In addition to this top accolade, Hakushu 18 Years Old Peated Malt and Hakushu 25 Years Old each earned Double Gold medals, further underscoring the exceptional quality and strength of The House of Suntory portfolio.
- Suntory Spirits also earned recognition as Producer of the Year in the Japanese Whisky category for the seventh consecutive year.

One of Scotland's whisky distilleries has entered administration this week. The move was made following "increased operating costs and ongoing external pressures."
GlenWyvis Distillery, also trading as 'The Society', announced on September 23 that it had filed a Notice of Intention to Appoint Administrators (NOIA) at the Court of Session in Edinburgh. At the time, no administrators had been officially appointed.
However, a new update on the firm's website confirms that Geoffrey Isaac Jacobs and Alistair McAlinden of Interpath Limited were appointed as joint administrators on October 5, 2026. The distillery's online shop has also been "paused."

Speaking to the Daily Record, Alistair McAlinden, head of Interpath in Scotland and joint administrator, said: “These are challenging times for Scotland’s whisky industry.
"We are aware of many independent producers up and down the country who are battling hard to keep their head above water in the face of rising costs, as well as oversupply and working capital strain from long maturation cycles which have coincided with a global cost of living crisis and changing drinking trends among younger generations.
“For GlenWyvis, the lack of future funding available has meant that there was no option but to appoint Administrators. With funding exhausted, there will be no distilling of whisky or gin while we look to explore how best to maximise realisations from the assets of the Society. We would ask all potential interested parties to contact us as a matter of urgency. Enquiries regarding the assets of the Society should be sent to: glenwyvis@interpath.com
"We understand that a significant number of members and customers own private casks held through the Society and that the position of those casks will be an immediate concern. Further information will follow to confirm arrangements for those parties and their casks.”
GlenWyvis also confirms on its website that its online shop has been "paused". It comes after the Society’s Management Committee was said to have explored a range of options to consider its future, including external fundraising, although this did not produce the necessary capitol it needed to continue trading.

Founded in 2015, GlenWyvis became the "world's first" community-owned distillery. Set against the backdrop of Ben Wyvis in the Highlands, it is said to be backed by around 3,800 members across Scotland and around the world.
Over the past decade, it has produced award-winning spirits from its site above Dingwall. It was also powered by sustainability, using renewable energy sources including wind, hydro, solar, and biomass.
Nevertheless, the distillery has faced a "prolonged period" of "substantive" commercial, operation and legal issues, with bosses citing "challenging conditions across the whisky market, rising operating costs and sustained external pressures."
Administrators have confirmed that the Society's three members of staff have now been made redundant. There will also be no further distilling of gin or whisky, with administrators focusing on owned whisky stocks and distillery equipment ahead of any sale of these assets.
Affected staff will now be provided with support from Interpath's specialist employment team to help with claims for monies owed to the Redundancy Payments Service. Private cask owners will also receive communications from the administrators.
Many Scottish businesses have been facing periods of sustained pressures following challenging economic conditions. Over the past few weeks alone, the Daily Record has been reporting on many others that have also entered administration.
Family-run cosmetics firm Aromatic Business Limited officially appointed administrators at Business Rescue Expert on September 23, 2026. Founded in 1997, the Forres-based company championed natural and ethical oils to create homemade beauty products.
Meanwhile, another pioneering firm, Calcivis Limited, headquartered in Edinburgh, also entered administration on September 25, 2026. The dental firm became famed for its patented technology that was backed by private and public funders.

首批推出三款,包括 16 年份 Basalt($135/£99)、20 年份 Red Sandstone($205/£149.95)、30 年份 Quartzite($685/£499.95),全數以 46.3% ABV 裝瓶。此為女性創立的 Studio Minerva 首次推出自有品牌。

Independent spirits retailer Master of Malt and luxury design agency Studio Minerva have launched The Islay, a new super-premium Scotch whisky brand built around a continuous single cask model believed to be the first of its kind. The range is available to buy on Master of Malt.
The Islay marks the first product collaboration between the two companies. It is also the first time female-founded Studio Minerva — whose clients include Laphroaig, Bushmills, Courvoisier and Brugal — has created a brand of its own.
Rather than telling Islay’s story distillery by distillery, the brand celebrates the island as a whole, focusing on the shared character of tropical fruit, minerality and a backbone of peat.

The debut collection comprises three expressions curated by Dr. Samuel J. Simmons, Master of Malt’s head of whisky. These are the 16 Year Old Basalt ($135/£99), the 20 Year Old Red Sandstone ($205/£149.95) and the 30 Year Old Quartzite ($685/£499.95), each bottled at 46.3% ABV.
The brand’s continuous single cask model reinvents the traditional single cask format. Every bottle is still drawn from a single cask, but when one cask is finished, the range rolls on to the next — retaining the same name, age statement and strength.
The result is a permanent, always-available range with the individuality of a single cask, where no two batches are quite the same.
Every Kirkland Bourbon Ranked, From Worst to Best
READ THE STORYEvery cask is distilled and matured on Islay. Each whisky is brought down to 46.3% ABV by slow reduction, a two-week process the brand describes as a dying art in Scotch.
The partnership began with a chance meeting between the two teams at an industry event.
Coral Harker, managing director of Studio Minerva, said: “We’ve spent a decade building brands for other people, and starting one of our own has always been the dream. The timing was never quite right. Then we met Master of Malt and the fit was there straight away, and The Islay certainly won’t be the last brand we build together.”
Harker added: “All of our favourite whisky brands start their story with a distillery. We started our story with the geology of the island.”
Explaining the decision not to name individual distilleries, Sam Simmons, head of whisky at Master of Malt, said: “Few places inspire devotion like Islay. It’s a place of pilgrimage for whisky lovers… That’s why we made a deliberate decision not to name them. This is a celebration of the island as a whole, as a place, not a hunt for individual names.”
Simmons said each cask was selected to be “as honest as possible,” adding: “The character comes from the place itself.”
Islay is home to several of Scotland’s most celebrated distilleries and is renowned globally for its peated single malts.
Scotch whisky is heading into orbit in a first-of-its-kind experiment by Scottish and Japanese scientists. The ‘Space Puffin’ mission, planned for 2028, will send whisky samples aboard a CubeSat for up to five years to study whether extreme temperatures and microgravity can speed up ageing and create different flavour profiles
What happens to whisky when it is taken out of a distillery and exposed to the extreme conditions of space? Scientists in Scotland and Japan are preparing to find out, with a small satellite carrying whisky-making materials planned for launch in 2028.
The experiment, nicknamed “Space Puffin”, will examine how whisky production and ageing behave in microgravity and whether the process could eventually be accelerated beyond Earth.
The project is being developed by researchers including Dr Gilles Bailet of the University of Glasgow, with engineers and students from Scotland and Japan working on a CubeSat that will carry tiny whisky samples and ingredients.
According to Sky News, the CubeSat is expected to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a SpaceX supply mission in 2028. It would then be deployed into orbit from the Japanese module of the station and spend up to five years circling Earth.
Why send whisky into space?
Whisky ageing is closely linked to its interaction with wood, but scientists still do not fully understand the chemistry behind the process.
The experiment will attempt to reproduce part of that process without sending a traditional, heavy oak cask into orbit. Instead, small quantities of spirit will be placed in contact with pieces of wood inside the CubeSat.
More from Explainers
As the satellite circles Earth roughly every 90 minutes, the samples will experience rapidly changing temperatures. Researchers believe these conditions could cause the wood to expand and contract more quickly than it does during conventional ageing on Earth.
“We want to see what the effect of a space environment is on the ageing of the whisky,” Bailet said, according to Sky News.
He added, “We've got the best people here in Scotland to be able to inform that, with centuries of experience, so we can bring this whisky experience into space.”
The experiment will monitor the whisky's colour and chemical composition and send data back to researchers on Earth.
Could space make whisky age faster?
That is one of the central questions behind the project. Bailet said that temperatures in space can rapidly swing from around minus 150 degrees to 200 degrees. The researchers are designing the spacecraft to create conditions suitable for the experiment while allowing the wood to respond to those changes.
“We build our spacecraft to be able to get an environment which is better for the whisky, but this wood will breathe faster than on Earth,” Bailet said.
“And so we are hoping that we'll be able to accelerate the ageing to be able to get something more interesting,” he added.
The Telegraph said the researchers hope the experiment will help explain the science behind how whisky “breathes” as it matures in wooden casks.
The possibility of faster maturation could eventually lead to a new category of space-aged whisky. Bailet expects the resulting drink could have unusually intense characteristics. He said he hoped the process would produce “really bold whiskies” with “extremely complex flavour profiles”.
This is not just about whisky
According to the drinks business, the team will use a nanophotonic artificial “tongue” developed at the University of Glasgow to detect changes in the chemical composition of the sample. Researchers intend to monitor compounds including terpenes as the whisky travels around Earth.
The project will also examine how ethanol can be produced or extracted in orbit. Ethanol is used in the production of many medicines, making the whisky experiment a model for studying chemical manufacturing away from Earth.
Bailet said previous research indicated that microgravity could potentially allow scientists to grow larger and purer chemical crystals and fold proteins differently.
“Big questions still remain over how we might actually do chemistry in space, however, and this project aims to provide some answers,” he said.
“Whisky gives us a very recognisable, very well-understood model for studying and monitoring biological and chemical processes in microgravity,” Bailet added.
The longer-term ambition is to understand whether similar processes could support orbital factories producing high-value pharmaceuticals and other substances that are difficult to manufacture on Earth.
Could we eventually drink space-aged whisky?
The first CubeSat experiment will not return to Earth. But Bailet wants to go much further if the research attracts investment.
“We are really keen to be able to actually fly a full whisky-making system, with a full cask, if we're able to collaborate with investors or other people interested about it,” he told Sky News.
“But it's totally in the realm of [possibility] to bring back something like a litre of whisky within the next three to five years,” he added.
For now, however, there will be no full-sized whisky barrel travelling aboard Space Puffin. Different distilleries in Scotland and Japan are expected to provide samples, although the participating distilleries have not yet been selected.
Geoff Nisbet, lead process design engineer at distillery-design consultancy Allen Associates, which supported the team's initial work in Japan, said the project brings together two countries with strong whisky and engineering traditions.
“We often say that our fingerprints are found all over Scotland's distilleries - we never expected the next set might end up in space,” Nisbet said.
“We're delighted to support a project which brings together Scotland's world-renowned whisky industry, engineering innovation and the next generation of engineers,” he added. “There is also something quite fitting about Scotland and Japan being brought together through whisky once again, this time with a project looking far beyond the distillery itself.”

Laphroaig 15 Year Old
Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
46% ABV / RRP: £85.00
Laphroaig has never really been a whisky for sitting quietly in the corner. Instantly recognisable from even the most restrained of initial noses, it’s big, smoky, medicinal, maritime and unapologetically itself.
In addition to its core-range releases, which include the Quarter Cask, 10 and 18 Year Old expressions, as well as its famed Càirdeas series and a whole host of limited editions, the Islay-based distillery also previously offered a rather fabulous 15 Year Old, which was sadly discontinued in 2009. But we can now rejoice in the news that, as of last month, it has made a return to shelves, and I was particularly excited to get reacquainted with all its Bourbon barrel matured bounty!
Nose: Brazen yet balanced bursts of barbecue smoke, damp peat, dried hay, pink grapefruit, lemon and honey lozenges, accompanied by a coastal salinity. Followed by notes of digestive biscuits, vanilla fudge, clove, charred oak and that unmistakable medicinal aroma of a hospital corridor.
Palate: Wondrous thick waves of salt and peat smoke, cracked black pepper, lemon zest and pink grapefruit, along with slightly over-baked, charred-edged fruit cake, vanilla Chantilly cream, sea salt, mixed spice and toasted oak.
Finish: Long and wonderfully, reassuringly intense. Given time, and it is in no hurry to finish, it slowly and gracefully begins to fade.
Summary: A much-welcomed return of Laphroaig 15 Year Old, IMHO, offering whisky enthusiasts the chance to rediscover a much-missed expression from the iconic Islay distillery. It provides a great contrast and comparison to its younger 10 Year Old age-stated sibling, highlighting the added depth and complexity that comes with continued maturation into its teen years and beyond. All in all, it’s a right rollicking and rewarding revival!

Wild Turkey Distilling Co. brand Russell’s Reserve has launched Single Rickhouse 2026 – Camp Nelson D, the fifth release in its Single Rickhouse Collection. Master Distiller Eddie Russell picked the barrels for the barrel-proof bourbon, which went on sale on October 6, 2026, in select US markets and at the Wild Turkey Distillery Visitor Center in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.
The collection looks at whiskey “terroir.” It tests how a rickhouse’s location and conditions shape a whiskey when the recipe stays the same. According to the brand, the 2026 edition offers the collection’s “most distinctive profile yet,” with “unexpected rye-like spice” in a bourbon.
Built in 1946, Camp Nelson D is one of five historic rickhouses still standing on the Camp Nelson property. The warehouse sits on the western side of the site, apart from the other warehouses. It also stands higher than any rickhouse used in the collection so far.

Its exposed, west-facing position brings strong, steady airflow. The brand calls this an aging environment “not previously explored through the Collection.”
Russell has a personal link to the building. “Camp Nelson D was the first rickhouse I ever worked in at Camp Nelson when I started as a union employee 45 years ago, so coming back to it for this release meant a lot to me,” said Eddie Russell, master distiller at Russell’s Reserve.
“We set out looking for those sweeter notes we know and love, but the rye spice notes immediately stood out,” he added. “It’s the most different Single Rickhouse release we’ve created, proving how every rickhouse can shape whiskey.”
Every Kirkland Bourbon Ranked, From Worst to Best
READ THE STORYThe team chose barrels from floors one, three, four, five and six. No earlier Single Rickhouse release drew from as many floors.
“We don’t typically draw from the first floor,” Russell explained. “But some of the barrels we tasted down there contributed an earthy character that helped build the spicy, rye-like profile we found ourselves chasing.”
“Once we realized what was developing, we leaned into it,” he continued. “This is the first Single Rickhouse release where, tasted blind, you’d bet it was a rye.”
In the official notes from the brand, the nose shows baked fruit, apple, baking spices and vanilla. The palate brings cinnamon, clove, stone fruit and rye bread. A medium-length finish offers rye spice, pepper, cinnamon and spicy oak.
The distillery did not chill filter the whiskey and bottled it at a barrel proof of 120.8.
Last year’s edition came in stronger. Bottled non-chill filtered and at a barrel proof of 128 (64% ABV), Russell’s Reserve Single Rickhouse Camp Nelson E remains the highest-proof Russell’s Reserve release to date.
Each warehouse in the series has a different setting. Camp Nelson Rickhouse E is located closer to the Kentucky River than the other rickhouses on the Camp Nelson campus. The 2024 release came from Camp Nelson B, known for its sun-drenched heights .
The inaugural release in the collection, Russell’s Reserve Single Rickhouse from Camp Nelson C, was bottled from a small batch of just 72 barrels. Camp Nelson F followed as the second entry in the series.
The new bottling marks Eddie Russell’s 45th year at Wild Turkey Distilling Co. The brand says it supports his belief that the aging environment strongly shapes the final spirit.
Single Rickhouse 2026 – Camp Nelson D is available for a limited time. It has a suggested retail price of $300 (£227 / ₹28,900) per 750ml bottle. That matches last year’s price: Camp Nelson E launched at U.S. retailers for a suggested retail price of $300 per 750 mL bottle.
K. Michelle is giving her first Country album an opening weekend big enough to match the occasion.
The Memphis-born singer-songwriter will celebrate the October 16 release of ‘Jesus & Whiskey’ with three consecutive shows in New Orleans, Dallas and Houston, bringing her new Country material together with songs from across her career.
‘Jesus & Whiskey Weekend’ begins at The Fillmore New Orleans on release day before moving to House of Blues Dallas on October 17 and House of Blues Houston on October 18.
For K. Michelle, the three-night run offers a chance to put the full breadth of her catalogue on the same stage. Songs from ‘Jesus & Whiskey’ will sit alongside fan favourites from the R&B records that established her, including material from a run of five consecutive Billboard-charting albums that began with her Gold-certified 2013 debut ‘Rebellious Soul.’
Her Country turn has roots considerably deeper than a genre switch.
K. Michelle grew up hearing Mary J. Blige and Whitney Houston alongside The Judds and Lee Ann Womack. Her yodeling ability later earned her a music scholarship to Florida A&M University, a skill she brings directly into the new album on “Yodel.”
The recently released song is a fast, freewheeling showcase for that side of her voice, while “Jack Daniel’s” brings a fiercer edge to the album. The slow-burning title track offers another glimpse at a record built around Country storytelling and Southern soul.
K. Michelle has spent years proving that a singer’s history does not have to fit neatly inside one genre. ‘Jesus & Whiskey’ gives the Country influences that were present from the beginning their own room to take centre stage.
The album arrives as her seventh studio LP, following 2023’s ‘I’m the Problem,’ which included the Billboard Adult R&B Songs chart-topper “Scooch.”
Her path toward ‘Jesus & Whiskey’ has already taken her onto major Country stages. She performed at the 57th Annual Country Music Association Awards and made her CMA Fest Nissan Stadium debut in 2025 with “Jack Daniel’s.”
The weekend shows are designed to bring those different pieces together. Rather than separating the Country material from the R&B catalogue, each night will draw from both, putting the new record into conversation with the songs that brought K. Michelle to this point.
Fans purchasing ‘Jesus & Whiskey’ on site will also receive access to a special Meet & Greet with K. Michelle.
‘Jesus & Whiskey’ arrives October 16 via Real Outlawz Records, Inc. under exclusive license to This Is Hit, Inc. d/b/a BBR Music Group.

Great Jones Distilling Co. is closing its flagship New York City location little over five years after it became Manhattan's first and only legal whiskey distillery since Prohibition. It's unclear what will become of the brand, which produces an award-winning range of ryes and bourbons made exclusively from New York-sourced ingredients.
In an Instagram post and accompanying banner message published on its website late last week, the team wrote:
"After five incredible years, Great Jones Distilling Co. Visitor Center is closed until further notice. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has been a part of the Great Jones community. Great Jones Whiskey will continue to be available for purchase online and in select retailers."
The Visitor Center encompassed much of the 28,000-square-foot property, which opened in the trendy downtown neighborhood of NoHo in August 2021. The location included a dedicated restaurant, an underground speakeasy, a lounge for private events, a gift shop and hands-on tours with guided whiskey tastings. Its most famous fixture was a custom-made Vendome copper pot and column still, where active whiskey distillation occurred on site.
Little is known about the closure beyond the statement published at the end of last week. Great Jones has not announced whether it will maintain ownership of the property, and if so, whether whiskey distillation will continue to occur there or at a separate location.
When asked for comment by The Daily Pour, a company spokesperson for Great Jones said that "the decision followed a thorough review of the current beverage industry trends, market conditions, and overall company business strategy."
The whiskey brand is owned by Proximo Spirits, a New Jersey-based importer and distributor, and its founder Juan Domingo Beckmann, the 11th-generation spirits tycoon behind Jose Cuervo. The billionaire tequila mogul is also responsible for 1800, Gran Centenario, Maestro Dobel and Gran Coramino, in addition to non-agave brands like Bushmills, Stranahan's and Proper No. Twelve. Beckmann recently made headlines north of the border when he joined the ownership group of the Los Angeles Football Club.
Great Jones built its reputation around a Straight Bourbon, a Four Grain Bourbon and a Rye Whiskey, all made from 100% New York-sourced grain before aging in a facility 60 miles upstate in Warwick Valley. The brand has slowly but surely expanded its catalog in the years since. Highlights include a handful of collaborations with the late Jean-Michel Basquiat and a recently debuted $200 bourbon that (in our opinion) was delicious but didn't completely justify its price tag.

Michelle’s seventh studio album also brings its timeless songwriting and Southern soul to songs like the fierce and fiery “Jack Daniel’s” and the recently released “Yodel” — a breakneck-paced, freewheeling romp flaunting the virtuosic yodeling skills that earned her a music scholarship to Florida A&M University. Bringing together her all-new Country material and the R&B classics that first made her a star, Jesus & Whiskey Weekend ultimately gives fans the rare chance to experience the full scope of her genre-defying artistry in one unforgettable night.
Tommie Zito, a Florida Evangelist, officially took ownership of the more than 100-acre former Green Mountain College campus property last week.
Zito aims to transform the campus in the heart of downtown Poultney into a Christian university, called Z University, which he plans to expand eventually to have campuses across the globe.
While the total purchase price amounts to $6 million, Zito put down a deposit of $1 million, plus a promissory note valued at $5 million with property mortgage and security interest as collateral, according to the purchase agreement documents acquired by VTDigger.
The town received the sale records between Whiskey mogul and media personality Raj Bhakta’s companies and Z University Inc. on Monday after the closing date on Oct. 1, said Town Clerk Betsy Wescott.
The security interest grants Bhakta’s company, Regenerative Land Holdings LLC, the legal right to Z University Inc.’s present and future assets if the debt is not paid, according to the mortgage documents VTDigger obtained.
Zito made the announcement of his purchase on social media, calling the transfer of campus property, which was originally a Methodist educational institution built in 1834, an “incredible supernatural acceleration into the Third Great Awakening.” The First and Second Great Awakenings were historical periods of Christian religious revival in the 1730-’40s and 1790-1830s.
“This campus, which was started for the gospel of Jesus Christ, can’t get away from America’s spiritual heritage. Vermont can’t get away from its great spiritual heritage,” Zito said in a video on Facebook this week.
He said in a previous interview with VTDigger that he thinks his evangelical work will have more of an impact in Vermont due to the population’s low rates of religious affiliation.
Bhakta wrote in an email to VTDigger that the U.S. needs a great revival, and he wishes “Pastor Zito every blessing in this noble endeavor.”
Bhakta had owned the property since 2020 when he purchased it for $4.8 million after Green Mountain College folded in 2019.
Bhakta had various ideas for the campus property ranging from a sustainable agriculture initiative to a resort with residential development, which never came to fruition.
He put up the college campus for donation this spring following property tax disputes with the town of Poultney. The property includes academic and administrative buildings, dormitories and athletic facilities such as a pool and gymnasium, according to the donation website.
Bhakta planned to give away the property to a Christian organization that aims to revive “Western civilization” and has financial means to operate the campus and deal with deferred maintenance. While Zito was Bhakta’s chosen recipient, Zito previously told VTDigger that he would not be receiving a donation, but instead would be purchasing the property.
Zito has a checkered financial past, as the Internal Revenue Service revoked the 501(c)3 status of his organization American Awakenings Inc. and he filed for bankruptcy for his organization Tommie Zito Ministries in 2010. Zito also previously started a religious bible school that went defunct in the 2010s.
For Zito’s part, he said in an interview this summer that he has learned from the mistakes of his past ventures and wants to recruit well-qualified people and delegate leadership roles at Z University.
As the property’s new owner, Zito will take on the responsibility of resolving allegations that Bhakta violated Act 250 regulations by operating a school and a whiskey business, as well as modifying buildings on the property, according to Peter Gill, executive director of the state’s Land Use Review Board. The state board enforcement and compliance teams are in discussion with Zito, Gill wrote in an email Tuesday.
Zito wrote in an email Wednesday that the immediate tasks at hand are to revitalize the property, fundraise for renovations and work to receive accreditation and approvals from the state.
He plans a “soft opening” in August 2027, with theology and evangelism colleges launching first, Zito wrote.
He expects Z University to fully open in August 2028, with proposed academic areas of study to include international business, digital communication, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, college of fine arts, nursing, education, agriculture and sustainable enterprise, he wrote.
Poultney is thriving economically and socially, Leah Romine, president of the Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce, wrote in an email to VTDigger. A good outcome for the former Green Mountain College campus could build on that success, she wrote.
“We hope the campus’s next chapter will bring opportunities that complement and further strengthen the community,” Romine wrote.

Whisky Live Paris 2026 was the 22nd edition of the show La Maison du Whisky has run since 2004. It brought 25,000 visitors, 280 brands and more than 2,000 whiskies and spirits to the Grande Halle de la Villette from 26 to 28 September. The whole Daily Whisky team attended all three days, our fourth time at the show. Our highlights were rare Laphroaig at 38 and 39 years old, a sherry-matured Laizhou from China, Yamazaki, Yoichi and Miyagikyo, and The Borders Distillery’s first-ever single malt. The 2027 edition runs from 25 to 27 September.
There is a particular moment at Whisky Live Paris when you come through the doors of the Grande Halle de la Villette, look down the length of the iron-and-glass hall, and realise you will not get round all of it. This was our fourth visit. That moment still lands every time.
For Whisky Live Paris 2026, the whole Daily Whisky team made the trip: Andreas, my brother Mathias and our father, three days on the floor, from the first pour on Saturday to the trade day on Monday. This is what we tasted, who we met, and what we would tell a friend thinking about going next year.
What is Whisky Live Paris?
Whisky Live Paris is a three-day whisky and fine spirits tasting show, organised since 2004 by the Paris retailer and distributor La Maison du Whisky. It takes place every September at the Grande Halle de la Villette in north-east Paris and describes itself as the largest whisky and spirits tasting event in the world.
The 2026 edition was the 22nd. According to the organisers, it welcomed 25,000 visitors, including 10,000 trade professionals, with 280 brands pouring more than 2,000 whiskies and spirits. A further 44 masterclasses and round tables ran across the weekend. The format is two public days followed by a day reserved for trade.
Four editions in, the scale still impresses
The hall was as vast as we remembered, and that is meant as a compliment. Whisky Live Paris is one of the very largest whisky shows anywhere, and the French way of staging it is something else: the stands, the light, the food, the sheer ambition of the layout. Paris treats whisky as something worth dressing up for.
What keeps us coming back, though, is the people. In three days we spoke with master blenders, distillery teams, brand ambassadors and fellow writers. Few events put that many people from the whisky world in one room, and that matters as much as the whisky itself. Everyone has time to talk.
The standout drams from Whisky Live Paris 2026
We could not pick a single dram, and we did not try very hard to. These are the pours we were still talking about on the train home.
Old Laphroaig. The quietest highlight of the show was a sit-down with from Laphroaig over the distillery’s oldest recent releases. The 38 Year Old is the second release in Laphroaig’s Archive Collection, distilled in 1985 and matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks before a finish in second-fill oloroso sherry casks. The 39 Year Old Wall Collection Rope Edition comes from a mix of oloroso and PX sherry-seasoned European oak, with only 200 bottles made. Four decades turn Islay’s most medicinal distillery into something softer and more layered, with the smoke still clearly present.
The Balvenie 12. We tasted the new Balvenie 12 Year Old The Twelve Year Old, The 1931 Collection. That release uses 100% floor-malted barley from the distillery’s own maltings, matured first in American oak and finished in sherry casks from a bodega in Jerez
Laizhou on sherry. The biggest surprise of the weekend came from China. Laizhou’s sherry-matured single malt was rich and confident, and it fully earned its place alongside the established names in the hall.
Japan in depth. A Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak set the tone, and pours of Yoichi and Miyagikyo showed the two sides of Nikka: Yoichi with its coastal weight, Miyagikyo with its softer fruit. Nikka also chose Paris to unveil its Artist range, made for La Maison du Whisky’s 70th anniversary. It includes two single casks from 1986, which the organisers say are the oldest ever released from either distillery.
The Borders finally pours its own single malt
The Borders Distillery team was one of our favourite meetings of the weekend, and it came at exactly the right moment. Their stills first ran in May 2018, making Hawick home to the first Scotch whisky distillery in the Scottish Borders since 1837. Eight years later, the first single malt is here.
The First Release is an eight-year-old aged in first-fill bourbon casks and then finished in malmsey Madeira casks, bottled at 46% ABV, with 10,000 bottles worldwide, priced at £46 for 70cl. We were genuinely impressed. It is a confident first statement from a distillery that has waited a long time to make one, and the price makes it easy to recommend.
Whisky from every corner of the map
The 2026 show felt more global than any edition we have attended. We made a point of visiting the newer whisky nations, and we tasted something from each of them. Ki One from South Korea made its first appearance at the show. Laizhou showed what Chinese single malt can already do. Kavalan, now a familiar name from Taiwan, was there too.
France had its own pavilion, with 62 producers of whisky, cognac, armagnac, calvados and eaux-de-vie. We tasted LAMAISON Triple Malted Grain, the first “whisky de pays” from La Maison & Velier, and spent time with the Warenghem team from Brittany, who unveiled the Armorik 18 Year Old Anthologiezh alongside a new brand identity. French whisky no longer needs a footnote. It holds its own on the floor.
Cocktail Street turned ten
Running the length of the Grande Halle, Cocktail Street celebrated its tenth edition with 36 pop-up bars and, by the organisers’ count, more than 75,000 cocktails served over three days. We tried a few whisky cocktails, including several built on Screwball, the American peanut butter-flavoured whiskey. It is not a dram we would sip neat, but in a cocktail it makes complete sense.
What we noticed on the floor
Three things stood out. First, many brands put their core range front and centre rather than only their limited releases, which was good to see. The everyday bottles are where most drinkers actually meet a distillery.
Second, collectable spirits are thriving. The charity auction run by Fine Spirits Auction will give close to €100,000 to the GoodPlanet Foundation, and a single magnum of Caroni rum went for more than €35,000.
Third, the no- and low-alcohol offer keeps growing, both at Cocktail Street and in the TAG village for emerging brands.
The masterclasses we missed
We did not make it to a masterclass this year, and that is the one thing we would change. The new Masterclasses d’Anthologie featured Chartreuse, Chichibu, The Dalmore, Gordon & MacPhail and Caroni, and everyone we spoke to said they were excellent. They are on our list for 2027.
Practical details: tickets, VIP and the shop
The standard ticket around 70 euro pr day covers tastings at the stands, so once you are inside you can explore widely without paying per pour. An optional VIP wristband 130 euro pr day gives access to the VIP area, where the rarer bottlings are poured, including this year’s selection from the Nikka Artist range.
There is also an on-site La Maison du Whisky shop. It is worth a visit, because some bottles there are exclusives you will not find on the shelf at home.
Is Whisky Live Paris worth it?
Yes, without hesitation. If you want to taste across the whole whisky world in one place, meet the people who make it and see where the category is heading, nothing else we know of does it at this scale.
Our advice: book your hotel early, because rooms near La Villette go quickly in late September. Add a day or two to enjoy Paris itself, which would be a waste to skip. And once you are inside, slow down. There is enough time to get round, and the best conversations happen when you are not rushing to the next stand.

What is Whisky Live Paris?
Whisky Live Paris is an annual whisky an
Scotch whisky is becoming more affordable in parts of India, narrowing the price gap between imported Scotch brands and premium Indian whiskies. The change is encouraging some consumers to reconsider their usual whisky purchases while increasing competition for Indian whisky makers in the premium spirits segment.
Diageo has confirmed that the prices of its 750ml Johnnie Walker Red Label and Black Label bottles in Karnataka have declined since September. The price of Red Label has fallen from ₹2,810 to ₹2,620, while Black Label has dropped from ₹4,005 to ₹3,645. The price reductions follow the India-UK trade agreement, which cuts the import tariff on whisky from 150% to 75%. However, the final retail price of Scotch continues to vary across states depending on local taxes, duties and whether the spirit is bottled domestically.
Diageo was the first major company to announce Scotch whisky price reductions following the tariff change. The company said price revisions had already been implemented in seven states, with changes underway in four other markets. Delhi and Haryana, however, had not yet seen corresponding price reductions.
→ Scotch Whisky Prices in India Fall 10-15% After India-UK FTA Tariff Cuts→ Mumbai Duty Free Premium Whisky Price List 2026 King George V, Macallan GTR 18, Glenfiddich 23 and More
The price gap has narrowed even further for some brands because of local bottling. According to Nandish, operations head at Tonique in Bengaluru, the price of J&B whisky had declined from ₹2,835 to ₹1,375 for a 750ml bottle. He attributed the reduction to local bottling, although Diageo has not independently confirmed this explanation.
The changing Scotch whisky prices are also creating greater overlap with premium Indian whisky brands. At Tonique, a 750ml bottle of Woodburns was priced at around ₹2,500, while Paul John Nirvana, an Indian single malt whisky, was available at ₹2,360. Glenfiddich 12, meanwhile, was priced at ₹5,275 for 700ml, compared with ₹5,610 earlier.
Indian single malt producers acknowledge that more affordable Scotch could intensify competition. John Distilleries, the producer of Paul John Indian Single Malts, said Scotch whisky benefits from decades of consumer familiarity, strong brand equity and cultural associations. However, the company highlighted Indian provenance, craftsmanship and distinctive flavour as key strengths of its own portfolio. It added that greater accessibility of established Scotch single malts would increase competitive intensity, while the company would continue to monitor price trends and focus on bringing more consumers into the Indian single malt category.
Amrut Distilleries is also seeing increasing price overlap between its whiskies and Scotch brands. Amrut Amalgam was priced at around ₹2,000 for 500ml at Tonique, while Amrut Fusion carried a Karnataka MRP of ₹3,500 for a 750ml bottle. This is only ₹145 lower than the ₹3,645 price of Johnnie Walker Black Label in the state. Amrut said the growing overlap in prices had not had a significant impact on its business so far.
Radico Khaitan has similarly maintained its focus on the premium positioning of brands such as Royal Ranthambore and Rampur. The company’s strategy indicates that Indian whisky makers are increasingly relying on brand equity, provenance, craftsmanship and premiumisation to differentiate themselves as imported Scotch becomes more accessible.
The reduction in Scotch whisky prices could therefore reshape India’s premium whisky market. As import duties fall and retail prices become more competitive in select states, consumers may have more choices across Scotch, Indian single malts and premium Indian blended whiskies. The emerging price overlap is likely to make brand positioning, product quality and consumer loyalty increasingly important in the rapidly expanding Indian whisky market.

Scotch whisky prices in India have declined by around 10-15% following the implementation of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement, with major international whisky companies beginning to pass on lower import costs to consumers in several key states. Price reductions for leading Scotch brands from Diageo and Pernod Ricard are already visible in markets including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Goa and Uttar Pradesh, with further reductions expected as more state excise authorities approve revised pricing.
The price cuts mark the first significant consumer-level response from India’s two largest Scotch whisky companies since the India-UK trade agreement came into effect on July 15. Diageo has reduced prices on brands including Johnnie Walker Black Label and J&B, while Pernod Ricard has reportedly submitted proposals to state governments seeking price reductions for brands such as Chivas, Ballantine’s and The Glenlivet.
According to industry sources, Diageo’s 750-ml Johnnie Walker Black Label is now available at around ₹3,800, compared with its earlier price of approximately ₹4,250. Similarly, J&B is selling at around ₹1,700, down from about ₹2,300 previously. The actual retail price varies across states because liquor pricing in India is influenced by state-level excise duties, taxes, distribution costs and retailer margins.
Under the India-UK Free Trade Agreement, the import tariff on British whisky has been reduced from 150% to 75%, effectively cutting the tariff rate by half at the initial stage. The agreement also provides for a further reduction in the tariff to 40% over the next 10 years. However, the reduction in import duty does not translate directly into an equivalent decline in retail prices because customs duty represents only one component of the final price paid by consumers.
→ Cheaper Scotch Whisky in India Lower Prices Increase Competition for Indian Whisky Brands→ Mumbai Duty Free Premium Whisky Price List 2026 King George V, Macallan GTR 18, Glenfiddich 23 and More
To implement the reductions, Scotch whisky companies are required to submit revised price proposals to individual state excise authorities, along with documentation demonstrating that the products qualify as UK-origin whisky under the trade agreement. Several states have already approved the revised prices, while proposals in other markets are still under consideration.
The reduction in Scotch prices could also reshape competition in India’s premium whisky market. Sandeep Arora, founder of Spiritual Luxury Living, said the UK FTA could influence the pricing of bottled-in-origin Scotch brands and potentially alter competitive dynamics for other whisky categories, including Indian single malts. Price gaps, the arrival of new whisky brands and product availability are expected to become increasingly important factors for consumers and producers.
The latest Scotch price reductions could therefore accelerate competition between imported Scotch whisky and premium Indian whisky brands. As the tariff advantage under the India-UK FTA gradually increases over the coming years, consumers could see further changes in the pricing and positioning of premium whisky brands across India’s rapidly expanding spirits market.

G&M releases Sir Kenny Dalglish whisky set
By Joe RogersWhisky maker Gordon & MacPhail has launched a collection of rare single malts celebrating Scottish football legend Sir Kenny Dalglish, including a 1951 Glen Grant.
Elgin-based independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail (G&M) has kicked off its Vintage Moments series with a box set of five single malt Scotch whiskies selected by Sir Kenny Dalglish.
The collaboration between G&M and the former Celtic and Liverpool forward was first announced this summer.
Each of the five whiskies in the collection was distilled during a pivotal in the sporting legend’s life, from his birth in 1951 to him leading Blackburn Rovers to win the Premier League in 1995.
“Selecting these single malts was a real privilege,” Dalglish said. “I’ve been fortunate to experience some wonderful moments throughout my life and choosing just five years that meant the most wasn’t easy. I’m looking forward to sharing the stories behind those choices and hope people enjoy discovering them as much as I enjoyed making the selection.”
The first bottling is a 1951 single malt from Glen Grant Distillery, matured in a first-fill Sherry puncheon and described as smooth and creamy, with notes of orange, poached pear, toasted hazelnuts, and cracked black pepper.
Next is a 1967 single malt from Longmorn Distillery, aged in a first-fill Sherry butt and boasting notes of morello cherry, toasted walnut, and coffee.
The 1974 single malt from Strathisla, chosen to commemorate the year Dalglish married his wife Marina, was aged in a refill butt to create a complex profile of leather, dark chocolate and charred oak.
The penultimate entry is a 1977 vintage single malt from Brenromach Distillery, described as rich in aroma, with spiced pears, strawberries and tangerines after spending more than four decades in a refill Sherry hogshead.
Rounding out the series is a 1995 single malt from Glentauchers Distillery, matured in a first-fill Sherry butt, offering notes of cinnamon, stewed fruits, raspberries and white pepper.
G&M director of prestige Stephen Rankin said: “It is a source of immense pride to be the only Scotch whisky company in the world to have stocks from every vintage going back as far as 1948. Many of these whiskies were laid down by grandfather, George Urquhart, who has been called ‘the father of single malt’.”
Just 15 individually numbered sets of Sir Kenny Dalglish’s Vintage Moments collection have been produced, priced at £100,000 (US$132,220) for the five 700ml bottle set.
In addition to this limited edition offering, G&M offers private clients the opportunity to create their own Vintage Moments box sets.
The service is offered to just 10 individuals per year at a minimum cost of £100,000.
Last year, G&M released the oldest single malt ever bottled, an 85-year-old single malt from The Glenlivet Distillery.

Ghostwood Whiskey has launched Ghostwood 3 Brothers Bourbon, a six-year-old, three-grain, high-rye bourbon priced at $49 (£37) per 750ml bottle. The Montana-based brand’s new expression is available online with shipping to eligible states and arrives at select Texas retailers from October 2026.
The release marks the fourth whiskey in Ghostwood’s core portfolio and is positioned as an entry point to the brand.
Ghostwood founder Lucas Perks said the bourbon was inspired by memories of time spent outdoors with his two brothers.

“Some of my favorite memories with my brothers are the simple ones: getting away into the woods, sitting around a fire, telling ghost stories, and enjoying being together among the trees,” said Perks, Ghostwood Whiskey founder.
He added: “That is the spirit behind 3 Brothers Bourbon. We wanted to make an unpretentious, authentic, and approachable American bourbon meant to be opened, shared, and enjoyed with the people who matter to you.”
Distilled in Indiana, the bourbon uses a three-grain mash bill of 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley.
Every Kirkland Bourbon Ranked, From Worst to Best
READ THE STORYIt is aged six years in new American oak with a No. 4 char and bottled at 80 proof by Ghostwood Distilling Co. in Columbia, Illinois.
The release coincides with all three brothers joining the family business.
According to the brand, 3 Brothers Bourbon represents a return to Ghostwood’s roots, highlighting three of the original four grains behind its flagship whiskey. Wheat, the fourth grain, was later added to create the brand’s first signature expression.
Perks, who serves as master blender, selected a higher rye mash bill to add spice and character.
The official notes from the brand describe the bourbon as dark amber in color, opening with aromas of caramel, creamy vanilla, cocoa, chocolate, and roasted nuts. The palate is led by caramel and vanilla, with hints of cocoa, dark chocolate, and subtle smoke, before a warm, dry, and smooth finish.
The expression is presented in a clear bottle, distinguishing it from Ghostwood’s signature black-glass range.
“3 Brothers Bourbon gives us an opportunity to introduce Ghostwood Whiskey to more whiskey drinkers while staying true to what the brand is about: family, craftsmanship, adventure, and whiskey worth sharing,” said Lachlan Perks.
The bourbon joins Ghostwood Original Blended Bourbon, Barrel Proof Black, and Chardonnay Cask in the core range. Ghostwood’s Original Blended Bourbon won Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in both 2023 and 2024.
