More than 100 members of trade union Unite are set to strike at Guinness owner Diageo’s Cameronbridge distillery, in Scotland, in response to the company’s plan to cut jobs across its Scottish operations. The strike action is scheduled to start on 28 September, with specific groups of employees taking action until 5.59am on 15 October. Unite noted that the industrial action – involving distillation and process controllers, distillery and machine operators, technicians, quality control analysts, process chemists and engineers – will take place throughout this period. Dispute Over Jobs The strike comes in response to Diageo’s plans to cut hundreds of jobs at its operations in Scotland, with dozens of roles at the Cameronbridge distillery under review, according to Unite. Diageo employs about 3,000 people in the country, with the Cameronbridge facility employing about 200 workers. Sharon Graham, general secretary at Unite, said, “Unite has repeatedly warned Diageo that there is no justification for slashing hundreds of jobs across its operations when it is raking in hundreds of millions of profit. “We are backing our members at Cameronbridge all the way in their fight for jobs, pay and conditions.” Diageo noted that only eight of the 72 positions in grain-distilling at the facility would be cut, while two further positions are already vacant. Production Standstill Unite expects the strike to bring production to a standstill, increasing pressure on Diageo. As part of its global restructuring strategy, the company has released little information on the jobs under review, Unite noted. In addition, Unite criticised Diageo’s plans to cease dozens of jobs while production continues at the same speed. Dougie Maguire, deputy Scottish secretary at Unite, added, “It really is last orders for Diageo. “It has a final opportunity to step back from its callous cuts at Cameronbridge. “If it fails to halt these self-destructive proposals, then strikes will bring production to a standstill. “Industrial action will disrupt the supply of many people’s favourite drinks, but the blame for this will lie squarely with Diageo’s management.”

🔥 Aberargie Golden Promise & Laureate 2026 年新酒評測 — 大麥品種對比實驗

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Aberargie Golden Promise & Laureate Review 2026 - thedailywhisky.com

Aberargie Golden Promise Laureate is the pairing that opens the distillery’s new Expressions series, and it’s built to be tasted side by side. Both are Lowland single malts from the Morrison family’s farm distillery near Perth, bottled at 48.2% ABV, non-chill-filtered and natural colour. Golden Promise is 100% Golden Promise barley matured in 68% first-fill bourbon and 32% first-fill sherry. Laureate flips that to 32% bourbon and 68% sherry, using 100% Laureate barley. Each costs £62.50 at The Whisky Exchange (£65 direct from the distillery), 70cl, with international shipping. What Aberargie is doing here: barley as the variable Most distilleries change the cask and keep the spirit constant. Aberargie has done something closer to a controlled experiment. Two barley varieties, grown on the family’s own farms, distilled separately, then matured to let each grain’s character lead. Golden Promise and Laureate are the first two of what Aberargie calls its four defining pillars: the two barley varieties, plus first-fill bourbon and first-fill sherry maturation. These opening releases are about the barley. That framing is the whole point. If you buy both and pour them next to each other, you get an unusually clean read on what the grain contributes, because so much else is held steady: same distillery, same 48.2% ABV, same first-fill cask types, just weighted differently. Who is Aberargie? Aberargie is a farm distillery near Perth, built by the Morrison family and producing spirit since November 2017. The Morrison name runs deep in Scotch: Stanley P. Morrison owned Bowmore in the 1960s, and the business that grew from it eventually became Morrison Bowmore, now part of Beam Suntory. Aberargie marks the family’s return to distilling under their own roof. It sits just south of the Highland line, which makes it technically a Lowland distillery, though the house style pushes against the light, grassy Lowland cliché. Aberargie aims for a rich, fruity and slightly waxy spirit. The operation is barley to bottle: grain grown on the 300-acre farm, water from a private well, and everything bar the malting handled on site, with a blending and bottling hall next to the stillhouse. The distillery took its time. Spirit had been filling casks quietly for the better part of a decade before the first official Aberargie single malt arrived earlier in 2026. The Expressions series is the next step in laying out what the distillery is actually about. Golden Promise: the heritage grain Golden Promise is the storied one. It was the barley behind Macallan’s celebrated era and was later adopted by Karuizawa in Japan. It gives lower yields than modern varieties, which is part of why most distilleries left it behind, but it carries a reputation for richness and texture. At Aberargie it is grown on the Aberargie farm itself. The Golden Promise bottling leans on bourbon, at 68% first-fill bourbon against 32% first-fill sherry, letting the grain sit in the foreground rather than under a blanket of sherry. The distillery describes it as rich and full-bodied. Laureate: the modern counterpoint Laureate is a current-generation barley variety, grown on the family’s other Scottish farms. Aberargie has matured it the other way round, at 68% first-fill sherry and 32% first-fill bourbon, so the sherry does more of the talking here. The distillery calls it bright and expressive, which makes for a deliberate contrast with the bourbon-led Golden Promise. Golden Promise and Laureate: the specs side by side | Golden Promise | Laureate | | |---|---|---| | Barley | 100% Golden Promise | 100% Laureate | | Maturation | 68% first-fill bourbon, 32% first-fill sherry | 32% first-fill bourbon, 68% first-fill sherry | | ABV | 48.2% | 48.2% | | Size | 70cl | 70cl | | Presentation | Non-chill-filtered, natural colour | Non-chill-filtered, natural colour | | Region | Lowland | Lowland | | Price | £65 | £65 | Tasting notes We haven’t sat down with these two at the tasting table yet, so what follows is the distillery’s own account rather than a TDW verdict. We’ll update with our own scored notes once we’ve poured them side by side. Aberargie Golden Promise (distillery notes) Palate: warm buttery pastry, stewed apples, brown sugar, gentle baking spices Finish: long and satisfying ABV: 48.2% | Casks: 68% first-fill bourbon, 32% first-fill sherry | Price: £62.50 Aberargie Laureate (distillery notes) Palate: candied orange peel, dried fruits, crisp orchard fruits Finish: lingering and honeyed ABV: 48.2% | Casks: 32% first-fill bourbon, 68% first-fill sherry | Price: £62.50 Price and availability Both are 70cl at 48.2% ABV. The Whisky Exchange lists each at £62.50 (£52.08 ex VAT), while Aberargie’s own shop has them at £65. The Whisky Exchange ships internationally, with Germany, Norway and many other countries on its delivery list, so readers outside the UK can order the pair directly. Note that stock on both the distillery site and TWE has been moving fast since launch, so if you want the matched set, don’t sit on it. Is it worth it? At £62.50 for a non-chill-filtered, natural-colour first-fill malt at 48.2%, the individual pricing is fair for a young distillery putting its cards on the table. But the real value here is buying both. On their own, each is a solid barley-forward Lowland malt. Together, at around £125 for the pair, they’re one of the more genuinely educational side-by-side experiments on the shelf right now, and that’s who they’re for: the drinker who wants to taste what barley variety actually does when everything else is held close to constant. If you only want one bottle and no comparison, the choice comes down to preference: bourbon-led richness in the Golden Promise, sherry-led brightness in the Laureate. Frequently asked questions What are Aberargie Golden Promise and Laureate? They are the first two bottlings in Aberargie’s Expressions series, a pair of Lowland single malts designed to be tasted side by side. Each uses a single barley variety, Golden Promise or Laureate, grown on the Morrison family’s own farms and distilled separately at their farm distillery near Perth. What is the difference between Aberargie Golden Promise and Laureate? Both are 48.2% ABV, but they differ in grain and cask weighting. Golden Promise uses heritage Golden Promise barley matured in 68% first-fill bourbon and 32% first-fill sherry. Laureate uses modern Laureate barley with the ratio reversed: 32% bourbon and 68% sherry, giving it a more sherry-led character. How much do Aberargie Golden Promise and Laureate cost? Each 70cl bottle is £62.50 at The Whisky Exchange (£52.08 ex VAT) or £65 directly from Aberargie. Buying the pair costs roughly £125, which is the intended way to experience the barley comparison the series is built around. Where can I buy Aberargie Golden Promise and Laureate? Both are available from The Whisky Exchange and Aberargie’s own online shop. The Whisky Exchange ships internationally, including to Denmark, Germany, Norway and many other countries, so buyers outside the UK can order the pair. Stock has been limited since launch, so availability may vary. What barley is Golden Promise, and why does it matter? Golden Promise is a heritage barley variety once used by Macallan in its most celebrated era and later adopted by Karuizawa in Japan. It yields less than modern varieties but is prized for richness and texture, which is why a distillery growing and bottling it single-variety is notable. Is Aberargie a Highland or Lowland distillery? Aberargie is classified as a Lowland distillery, sitting just south of the Highland line near Perth. Despite the region, the house style aims for a rich, fruity and slightly waxy spirit rather than the lighter, grassier profile often associated with Lowland malts. Leave a Reply

🔥 超越肯塔基:波本威士忌找到更宏闊的聲音

Whisky Advocate / Whisky Magazine(經 Google News)|原題:Beyond Kentucky: Bourbon Finds Its Broader Voice - Whisky Magazine

For most of its modern life, bourbon has meant one place. Kentucky. The association is so strong that, for many drinkers, it feels like a rule rather than a tendency. In reality, bourbon has always been legally portable. It must be made in the US, from at least 51 per cent corn and matured in new charred oak. Beyond that, geography is open. Kentucky built the reputation, the flavour expectations and the cultural narrative of bourbon. Its limestone-filtered water, pronounced seasonal temperature swings and vast reserves of ageing stock created a model that others rarely challenged. More than 90 per cent of the world’s bourbon still comes from the state today. A growing number of distilleries outside Kentucky are beginning to assert themselves. Not through imitation, but through difference. Climate, grain and maturation are starting to shape distinct styles. Bourbon is no longer being defined solely by one place. It is beginning to behave more like a category with regional expression. To understand that shift, it is worth starting with a distillery that, for years, sat quietly at the centre of American whiskey production. MGP Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. For much of its history, MGP operated out of sight. It produced whiskey at scale for other brands, many of which went on to build strong reputations of their own. The distillery’s role was essential, but largely invisible. That invisibility made sense in a market where provenance was rarely questioned. Bottlers built brands. distilleries supplied liquid and the distinction between the two was not always front of mind for consumers. Over the past decade, that has changed. Drinkers have become more informed and more curious. Questions around origin, production and authenticity have moved from niche interest to mainstream expectation. MGP was uniquely positioned for this moment. It had mature stock, technical expertise and decades of production history. What it lacked was a visible identity. Through the development of its own brands, including Ross & Squibb and Remus Bourbon, that identity has come into focus. This is not simply a case of vertical integration. It is a shift in narrative. MGP is no longer just a source of bourbon, it is an origin in its own right. That transition speaks to a broader change in the category. Production alone is no longer sufficient. Provenance has become part of the value. If MGP represents the hidden backbone of American whiskey, Wilderness Trail Distillery offers a different, but equally telling, case. Wilderness Trail is not outside Kentucky geographically, but it sits outside the traditional conversation. Despite being one of the largest producers of whiskey in the United States, it has remained relatively quiet in consumer consciousness. Its influence far exceeds its visibility. Part of that comes down to focus. Wilderness Trail has built its reputation on process rather than promotion. Fermentation, yeast management and grain selection sit at the centre of its approach. It has also supplied distillate and expertise across the industry, further embedding itself into the category without necessarily putting its name on the label. There is a parallel here with MGP. Both distilleries demonstrate that scale and influence do not always translate into recognition. Both are now moving, in different ways, towards greater visibility. In Wilderness Trail’s case, that visibility is tied to a growing appreciation for technical precision. As consumers become more interested in how whiskey is made, distilleries that can speak credibly about process gain relevance. For distilleries outside Kentucky, credibility has always been the central challenge. Not because of any legal constraint, but because of expectation. Kentucky established the flavour profile most drinkers recognise. It set the benchmark. MGP’s strength lies in its history. It does not need to claim legitimacy. Its liquid has been trusted for decades. The shift is simply one of visibility. Other distilleries approach the challenge differently. They build identity around what makes them distinct rather than what aligns them with Kentucky. One of the clearest examples is Balcones Distilling in Waco, Texas who are using climate as a creative force. Kentucky’s climate plays a defining role in how bourbon matures. Warm summers and cold winters drive the expansion and contraction of spirit within the cask. Over time, this interaction builds structure and complexity. Texas takes that dynamic and intensifies it. Higher average temperatures and more extreme swings accelerate the maturation process. The spirit interacts with the wood more aggressively, leading to faster extraction and greater concentration. The result is not simply bourbon that ages more quickly, but bourbon that develops differently. Balcones has built its identity around this distinction. Its whiskies often display greater intensity, more pronounced oak influence and a different balance of flavours. Grain selection and distillation technique contribute, but climate remains the defining factor. If bourbon can express itself differently depending on where it is made, then place becomes more than a backdrop. It becomes a driver of style. Historically, bourbon has not been discussed in regional terms. Unlike Scotch, which is often framed through the lens of Speyside, Lowlands, Campbeltown, Islay or the Highlands, bourbon has been treated as a single flavour family. Indiana brings scale and consistency, underpinned by a long production heritage. Texas introduces climatic intensity and bold flavour profiles. Even within Kentucky, producers like Wilderness Trail are reshaping expectations through process and precision. These differences are not yet codified into formal regions, they remain fluid and evolving, but they are becoming distinct enough to register. If this trajectory continues, bourbon may begin to develop a more nuanced identity. Not fragmented but layered. One of the key drivers behind this shift is transparency. Sourcing has long been part of American whiskey, brands often built reputations around liquid they did not distil and for years, this was accepted practice whereas today, it is increasingly scrutinised. Drinkers want to know where their whiskey comes from, they expect clarity around distillation and maturation. This demand has reshaped how distilleries and brands present themselves. MGP’s evolution reflects this new reality; by stepping forward as a producer, it aligns with a consumer base that values provenance as much as flavour which leads to innovation within inherent tradition. What is striking about the rise of non-Kentucky bourbon is how little it disrupts the core of the category. The rules remain unchanged, bourbon must still be made from at least 51 per cent corn and matured in new charred oak but what changes is the context in which those rules are applied. Climate, grain and maturation environment introduce variation within a familiar framework. This allows distilleries to innovate without abandoning tradition. Balcones stretches the boundaries of flavour while remaining firmly within the definition of American whiskey. MGP reframes its role without altering its production and in another state, Wilderness Trail pushes process without breaking convention. There is also a practical dimension to this evolution, as demand for premium bourbon has grown significantly over the past decade and Kentucky distilleries have invested heavily to meet that demand, but maturation cannot be accelerated indefinitely which ultimately creates market space. Distilleries outside Kentucky can enter the market with different flavour profiles, different timelines and different narratives. They are not competing directly with Kentucky’s heritage as they are offering an alternative perspective but still must adhere to the macro production rules and laws. For retailers, this broadens the range. For consumers, it increases choice. For the category, it adds

The New York International Spirits Competition has announced its 2026 results, and today we’re looking at Irish whiskey. Entries are tasted blind by trade buyers, who judge each spirit “by its category and actual price as if buying it for their business.” A Double Gold means every judge on the panel awarded Gold, while Gold and Silver mean the judges love or really like a spirit. The winners range from an 18 year old single pot still to a 30% ABV orange-flavored spirit drink, and three come from a Belfast distillery that opened in 2023. So, here are the best Irish whiskeys according to the New York International Spirits Competition 2026. Let us know if you agree with the results in the comments below. Redbreast 18 Year Old Award: Double Gold, 96 points Category: 11 – 20 years, Ireland, Pure Pot Still Irish Whiskey Tasting Notes: Blackcurrants, sugar glazed cherries, dried fig, hazelnut chocolate, caramelised stoen fruits, toasted almonds, cinnamon, oak, worn leather, grapes, peeled ginger, liquorice, orange peel Every Kirkland Bourbon Ranked, From Worst to Best READ THE STORYFind Your Next Bottle: $180 / £175 Redbreast’s story begins with W&A Gilbey, a London wine and spirits merchant founded in 1857 that had expanded to Dublin by 1861. Gilbey matured spirit from Jameson’s Bow Street Distillery in its own sherry casks and first used the Redbreast name in 1912. The name is credited to Gilbey’s chairman, a keen bird-fancier. By the 1920s, the whiskey was popular enough with Irish clergy to be nicknamed “The Priest’s Bottle.” After Gilbey’s final bottling in 1985, Irish Distillers bought the brand and relaunched it as a 12 year old in 1991, using pot still whiskey from Midleton. The 18 Year Old joined the core range as a permanent addition in September 2024. Made from malted and unmalted barley, it is triple distilled in copper pot stills at Midleton and matured in bourbon, oloroso sherry, ruby port, and cream sherry casks. It is the first core Redbreast to use cream sherry casks, and it is bottled at 46% ABV. Jameson Triple Triple Award: Double Gold, 96 points Category: Blended Irish Whiskey, Ireland, Up to 10 years Tasting Notes: Toffee fudge, vanilla, hazelnut chocolate, orchard fruit, pear, green apple, dark chocolate, toasted almond, chestnut, wood spices Find Your Next Bottle: $21 / £23 The name Triple Triple refers not only to triple distillation, but also the number of cask types involved. Jameson Triple Triple is, you guessed it, triple distilled at Midleton and blended from whiskey matured in three types of cask. This edition used whiskey matured in ex-bourbon, sherry, and sweet chestnut casks. It is a blend of single pot still and single grain whiskeys, bottled at 40% ABV. As for the brand behind it, Jameson is an iconic Irish whiskey brand that made up more than 70% of Irish whiskey sales in the US in 2021. In the year to June 2022, it passed 10 million cases sold for the first time. Titanic Distillers Sherry Edition Award: Gold, 95 points Category: Blended Irish Whiskey, Ireland, Up to 10 years Tasting Notes: Honeycomb, vanilla, toasted malt, chocolate, fruit cake, coconut, dark fruit, herbs, polished oak, spice, dark chocolate Find Your Next Bottle: $46 / £35 Titanic Distillers is housed in the pump house at Belfast’s Thompson Dock. The dock opened in 1911 to service the White Star liners Olympic and Titanic, and it was the last place Titanic sat on dry land before her ill-fated maiden voyage. Peter Lavery, a former Belfast bus driver who won the lottery, set up the distillery with Stephen Symington and Richard Irwin. It opened in 2023 as Belfast’s first working whiskey distillery in almost 90 years, and head distiller Damien Rafferty began distilling on three Forsyths copper pot stills that same year. Since its own spirit is still maturing, Titanic’s current releases use whiskey from other Irish distilleries. Its first bottling was made with Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk. The Sherry Edition (listed at the NYISC as “Sherry Blend”) is a version of Titanic’s Premium Irish Whiskey, blended from 80% grain and 20% malt. The malt portion includes PX cask-matured whiskey and a sherry-vatted malt. Titanic Distillers 5 Year Old Pot Still PX Award: Gold, 95 points Category: Ireland, Pure Pot Still Irish Whiskey, Up to 10 years Tasting Notes: Fruit cake, liquorice, dark chocolate, pepper Find Your Next Bottle: N/A The 5 Year Old Pot Still PX belongs to Titanic’s Pumphouse Series. The series is a run of small-batch releases for the years while the distillery’s own spirit matures. When it launched, head distiller Damien Rafferty wrote on LinkedIn that the release “marks the first bottling of a cask that we have sourced and finished here, on-site, at Thompson Dock.” The whiskey was made from malted and unmalted barley and finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks at the Pumphouse. Only 350 bottles were released. Earlier this year, it took Double Gold at the London Spirits Competition and was named Pot Still Irish Whiskey of the Year. It also won Gold at the Irish Whiskey Masters. Titanic Distillers 8 Year Old Single Malt Award: Silver, 93 points Category: Ireland, Single Malt Irish Whiskey, Up to 10 years Tasting Notes: Vanilla, honeycomb, cherries, citrus, dried fruits, caramel, spice Find Your Next Bottle: $73 / £55 The 8 Year Old is Titanic’s first single malt. The distillery only began distilling in 2023, so the whiskey in this bottle was made elsewhere. It is aged for at least eight years across ex-bourbon, virgin oak, oloroso sherry, and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. It is bottled at 42% ABV. Titanic describes it as made from double-distilled single malt. Its own single malt spirit at Thompson Dock, by contrast, is triple distilled. This Silver is one of several awards for the whiskey this year. At the 2026 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, it took a Double Gold with 98 points, and at the 2026 IWSC it won a Gold with 95 points. It was also named Irish Single Malt of the Year at the London Spirits Competition. Jameson Orange Award: Silver, 93 points Category: Flavored Whiskey, Ireland, Up to 10 years Find Your Next Bottle: Orange citrus fruits, orange zest, vanilla, nuts Jameson Orange is not legally Irish whiskey. Irish whiskey has to be bottled at no less than 40% ABV. Jameson Orange is bottled at 30%. It is made by combining triple-distilled Jameson with natural orange flavoring, and it launched in the UK in August 2021. Irish Distillers said the flavor was inspired by the Old Fashioned and planned a US launch for 2022. Jameson dates its story to 1780, when the Bow Street distillery opened in Dublin. The distillery was founded by the Stein family, who employed John Jameson as general manager before he took ownership in 1805. Jameson moved production to Midleton, County Cork, in 1975. Pernod Ricard has owned the brand since it bought Irish Distillers in 1988. Kinsale Spirits Wild Atlantic Irish Whiskey Rechar Barrel Award: Silver, 93 points Category: Blended Irish Whiskey, Ireland, Up to 10 years Tasting Notes: Toffee, ripe red fruits, blackberry, raspberry, marzipan, port, spice, pepper Find Your Next Bottle: $34 / £25 Kinsale publican Tom O’Riordan founded Kinsale Spirit Company with his sister Clodagh, a qualified distiller, and their Kinsale Gin first went on sale in 2017. Ernest Cantillon and Colin Ross later joined as partners. The company has since added the Red Ear

美國威士忌 vs 加拿大威士忌:有什麼不同?

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:American Whiskey Vs Canadian Whisky: How Are They Different? - Mashed

American Whiskey Vs Canadian Whisky: How Are They Different? Americans have had a long, long love affair with whiskey. The country drank a ridiculous amount of whiskey back in the 1800s, averaging around 90 bottles a year for each adult. Given the number of quality whiskey brands in America, it might be a little surprising to know that a good amount of what we guzzle these days actually comes from our neighbors in the North. The U.S. imported over 168 million liters of whisky from Canada in 2020 (via Forbes), so it's clearly a good match for the American palate. What's interesting is that American and Canadian whiskey can be incredibly different from each other. Aside from how "whiskey" is spelled (Canada drops the "e" like Japan and Scotland do) there are significant distinctions in the production methods used by the two North American countries. As a result, there are also some clear flavor differences. Canadian whisky tends to lean towards a smoother palate, while American whiskeys embrace a more robust profile. The laws regulating whiskey production also contribute to these differences. The U.S. has different regulatory standards for each type of whiskey, ranging from specifications on the mash bill and alcohol-by-volume limits, which is why Tennessee whiskey is unique from the likes of bourbon and rye. Canada's whisky regulations are more relaxed by comparison; it generally just needs to be made from Canadian cereal grains and barrel-aged for three to 18 years. American whiskey is all about different expressions One of the details that defines American whiskey is its adherence to guidelines regarding its mash bill, or the mix of grains fermented and distilled into liquor. Mash bill regulations determine what a whiskey can call itself; for instance, bourbon can only be made from a mash bill that contains at least 51% corn, but corn whiskey bumps that requirement up to at least 80%. While these laws might seem limiting, it's actually working within those limits that gives American whiskey its diverse character. Seeing as the mash bill plays such a huge role in the resulting flavor, distillers can develop signature flavors within the framework of distinct styles. Bulleit bourbon, for instance, achieves its flavor with a mash bill of 68% corn, 28% wheat, and 4% barley. Jim Beam works with 75% corn, 13% wheat, and 12% barley. Add to that the nuances each can develop through aging techniques, and you end up with a ton of whiskey expressions. This, in turn, allows consumers to explore whiskey in a much more defined way. Finding your favorite whiskey styles, and then finding your favorites within those styles, is part of the fun that comes with enjoying the often-robust flavor profiles of American whiskey. To get a better picture of how varied the styles can be, try comparing Elijah Craig Straight Rye with Four Roses Yellow Label Bourbon — both are expert-recommended whiskeys under $50, so they're accessible starting points for appreciating American whiskey. Canadian whisky focuses on the blend Distilleries in Canada tend to blend three separate whiskies to create their product: a base whisky usually made from corn, and two "flavoring" whiskies made from grains like rye and barley. Each grain is independently fermented and distilled into its own component whisky, and the resulting whiskies are then mixed and aged in barrels. Since they're blended before aging, getting the right mix of flavors at the blending stage is crucial. Some distilleries introduce flavor additives for this reason, which may influence Canadian whisky's less stringent taste compared to American whiskey. Another reason it's so important to get the blend right is that distillers typically age Canadian whisky in used barrels, rather than the new, charred ones American distillers use. The wooden slats of used barrels have less flavor to impart, so the aging has more of a harmonizing effect. The subtler flavors from the wood serve as a foundation for balance rather than a standout feature. A good Canadian blended whisky is typically defined by its smoothness and ease of drinking, and is great for making cocktails. While Canada produces other types of whisky like single malts, blended whisky is the most popular in the region. If you'd like a good introduction to Canadian whisky, it's hard to go wrong with Crown Royal, which was invented to commemorate a royal couple: King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, who visited the country in 1939.

加拿大威士忌抽籤熱烈 貿易戰帶動國貨購買潮

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:Canadian whisky lottery draws thousands as trade war shifts buying habits - Global News

What if winning the lottery didn’t mean millions of dollars, but a chance to buy a bottle of whisky? That’s what thousands of Canadians are hoping for as Okanagan Spirits prepares to release 5,000 bottles of its Laird of Fintry single malt whisky through a draw. The Okanagan Spirit distillery received more than 42,000 entries. Wyatt Cooper-Brown, manager of Okanagan Spirits’ Kelowna location, says the company has seen increased sales as more Canadians look toward homegrown spirits amid the Canada-U.S. trade war. “The trade war for us is almost a silver lining,” Cooper-Brown said. “Massive increase in our sales.” Get daily National news He says the company’s bourbon-style whisky has seen particularly strong interest, bringing more customers to its other products. The changing buying habits extend beyond the distillery. A recent TD survey found 79 per cent of Canadians plan to support local or Canadian businesses, while 48 per cent said supporting Canadian businesses is a stronger priority than it was last summer. For some Kelowna residents, the trade dispute has changed where they choose to spend their money. Hubert, a local resident, said buying Canadian products is a way of supporting the country. “For us it just means that we’re defending home and kind of trying to uphold Canadian culture,” he said. Another resident, Cindy, said she has become more deliberate about checking where products are made. “I don’t think a lot of people realise what was produced in Canada,” she said. “But everyone that I know now, they look at were things are made.” The increased interest in Canadian whisky comes with a catch for Okanagan Spirits: the company can’t simply increase production overnight. Its Laird of Fintry whisky is finished in specialized wine barrels from local wineries, which give the whisky its distinct flavour. The distillery says there are only a limited number of those barrels available. Cooper-Brown says the boost in sales also needs to be viewed in the broader context of the trade war. “The trade war can be beneficial for some and quite negative for others,” he said. “Although we are seeing increase in sales and what not, it’s still an uphill battle.” For Okanagan Spirits, the trade war has brought more attention to Canadian-made spirits. For other businesses, the economic impact has been very different. I’m assuming they’ll hold the draw sometime during the 2nd – 3rd week of October. Seems like a ripoff of Scotch or Irish whisky. Clownadian piss in a bottle Duhhhh Dill Pickle huh huh huh Canadians need to be drunk to live through the Tyranny of this Liberal Government ,let alone the disastrous B.C. Needles Drugs and Poverty Party You stupid FKers didn’t even report the bridge being closed in K-Town from an accident at 4 am this morning

Top 10 award-winning American whiskeys By Lauren BowesBourbon, rye, Tennessee whiskey and single malt – there’s something for every palate when it comes to America’s national spirit. This article contains affiliate links. We may receive a commission on any sales we generate from it. Even as the category faces a challenging climate, from oversupply to trade tariffs, quality across the board remains high – as was discovered during last month’s American Whiskey Masters. The competition tasked six panels of judges to blind taste hundreds of expressions to assess the category’s best bottles without prejudice – and we’re now bringing you 10 of the best. As with every blind tasting in The Global Spirits Masters Competitions (GSMC) series, Master, Gold and Silver medals are awarded, with one product coming out on top as the Taste Master. Keep scrolling to discover our pick of 10 award-winning American whiskeys. Ampersand Aureus Earning a Master medal in this competition is no mean feat – and even more difficult is being named the one and only Taste Master. That prize went to Ampersand Aureus, which was created by Chip Tate, founder of the cult Texan distillery Balcones. Judge Siobhan Feeley was won over by its intensity, describing it as “big and waxy with heavy spice and eye-watering pepper”, but it was equally praised for being “super-drinkable and welcoming”. Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon The world’s biggest-selling Bourbon surely needs little introduction, but it seems the whiskey managed to wow our judges just as much as the masses. The flagship Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon picked up Gold medals in both the premium and no-age-statement Bourbon flights, with judges praising its aroma of “peanut brittle” and well-balanced sweetness. Warfield Idaho Highlands American Single Malt Officially established as a category in late 2024, American single malt is one of the nation’s most exciting new whiskey frontiers, with Idaho’s Sun Valley Distillery proving there’s quality as well as novelty. Warfield Idaho Highlands American Single Malt took home a Master medal in the Single Malt – Aged up to 7 Years flight, with judge Marie Cheong-Thong enjoying its “green nose” and “lovely rounded finish.” The First Millionaire American Barley Whisky Proving that American whiskey doesn’t begin and end with corn, this barley-based expression from the Boisset Collection took Gold in the Other Grains category – the only entrant in its flight to do so. Judges described it as offering “soft vanilla with dark chocolate notes – clean, crisp and well made, very sippable” – good enough to make you feel like a millionaire. Traveller Full Proof While Scotch whisky can bring to mind kilts and bagpipes, American whiskey is often associated with cowboy boots and country music. That’s not a stereotype Sazerac has any intention of busting, having doubled down on Traveller whisky, its partnership with country musician Chris Stapleton. The brand’s cask-strength Full Proof expression took home a Master medal in the Blended – Super-Premium flight, proving there’s more beneath the surface of this celebrity spirit. The 60.5% ABV whiskey impressed with its “toffee apples on the palate”, with the judges describing it as “spicy, but the high ABV is done very well.” Old Virginia An accessible, easy-drinking Bourbon from French group La Martiniquaise-Bardinet, Old Virginia picked up a Gold medal in the closely fought Bourbon – Aged up to 7 Years flight. Judges called it “very approachable and a great option for whiskey cocktails” – a reminder that not every award winner needs to be sipped neat to shine. Brother’s Bond Bottled-In-Bond Straight Bourbon Whiskey The second celebrity spirit to make this list, Brother’s Bond was co-founded by actors Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, but the brand has quickly built a reputation beyond The Vampire Diaries stans. Its Bottled-In-Bond Straight Bourbon Whiskey – a specification that requires a whiskey to be distilled during a single distillation season and bottled at exactly 50% ABV, among other rules – was awarded a Gold in this year’s blind tasting. Buffalo Trace One of the most well-known names in American whiskey, Sazerac’s Buffalo Trace Distillery provides liquid for many brands, including Traveller Whiskey mentioned earlier in this list. But it’s clearly keeping some of its best whiskey for its own brand, with the distillery’s flagship Bourbon taking home a Master in the Premium flight this year. Judges praised its “sweet vanilla and caramel to start, building to some spicy, rye-like notes. There’s a freshness to the whiskey – almost like eucalyptus. It’s a fantastic option for under £30, sip neat or mix, very impressive.” 1792 Small Batch Yes – this is Sazerac’s third entry on this list. The company has been making big moves in the ready-to-drink, Tequila and vodka categories of late, but the results of last month’s blind tasting show that whiskey remains at the very heart of the business. Its 1792 range swept the Bourbon – Super-Premium flight, taking home four Gold medals. In particular, its Small Batch expression was praised for its notes of “buttery shortbread, cloves, sweet spice, caramel, and a little dark chocolate”. Four Roses Small Batch Four Roses departed Kirin Holdings’ portfolio in April 2026, with the Bourbon brand being acquired by family-owned wine and spirits producer Gallo. While it’s too early to say how the move has affected the brand, this year’s American Whiskey Masters results suggest no drop-off in quality: Four Roses picked up two Gold medals in the Bourbon – Aged up to 7 Years flight, for both its Small Batch and Small Batch Select expressions. Diageo 股價漲 1.1% 但威士忌生產風險浮現

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Diageo stock gains 1.1 percent as whisky risk looms - AD HOC NEWS

Diageo stock gains 1.1 percent as whisky risk looms Published on 09/22/2026 at 17:49 | Editorial responsibility: Rafael Müller, Editor-in-Chief AD HOC NEWSDiageo plc (GB0002374006) stock rose 1.1 percent to GBP 16.33 in London at 12:28 p.m. on September 22, 2026. The move leaves the shares 14.21 percent below their 52-week high of GBP 19.04 and 17.27 percent above the 52-week low of GBP 13.51. Whisky production faces disruption A scheduled strike at Cameronbridge is the clearest operational risk in the current setup. According to Vinetur on September 21, 2026, around 100 Unite members are scheduled to begin industrial action at Cameronbridge on September 28, with stoppages planned in stages through October 15. The site matters because the same report describes Cameronbridge as one of Europe's largest grain whisky distilleries. It also cites Diageo's Scottish business at GBP 595 million of profit after tax in 2025, down from GBP 736 million in 2024, a decline of GBP 141 million or 19.2 percent. Analyst views remain divided Recent ratings show a split rather than a single market view. The September 22, 2026 London market update lists Jefferies as Buy on September 21, while Deutsche Bank is listed at Hold on September 16 and JP Morgan at Neutral on September 1, according to finanzen.ch. Yahoo Finance shows an average analyst price target of USD 107.57 for Diageo's US-listed ordinary-share quote, against a current value of USD 86.82 on September 22, 2026, implying a USD 20.75 gap. That comparison is a market estimate, not a forecast made by this article. Stock remains below yearly peak The London quote reached GBP 16.43 intraday on September 22, 2026, while volume had reached 439,626 shares in the cited market update. The distance from the GBP 19.04 yearly high is concrete: the stock would need GBP 2.71 to return to that level. For investors, the key tension is visible in the numbers. The shares gained 1.1 percent during the session, yet the Scottish profit figure fell 19.2 percent year over year and planned industrial action creates a near-term production variable. London price remains below GBP 19.04 Diageo stock traded at GBP 16.33 on the London Stock Exchange at 12:28 p.m. on September 22, 2026, up 1.1 percent on the session. The quoted 52-week range was GBP 13.51 to GBP 19.04. Ardbeg的異想實驗室:從BBQ威士忌到刻痕橡木桶,這些創新比你想的更極端

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Inside Ardbeg’s Unusual Whisky Experiments: Some Are More Extreme Than You Think - Whisky Monkeys

Most distilleries put an age statement on the label. Ardbeg often doesn’t, instead reeling whisky fans in with the most surprising names for their releases. How about ‘Eureka!’, ‘Anamorphic’, or ‘BizarreBQ’? These aren’t just catchy labels—they point to the constant stream of innovative experiments the distillery runs, sometimes with its fans right in the middle of the action. Did you know Ardbeg invited 100 whisky lovers to a secret experiment? Ardbeg invited 100 loyal Committee members from 15 countries to take part in a covert tasting experiment. At the time, the Ardbeg Committee community was celebrating its 25th anniversary, which became the perfect reason for the experiment. Participants were served five different unreleased Ardbeg expressions to compare against the classic Ten bottling. What these Committee members didn’t know was that their preferences would help shape the development of Ardbeg Eureka. The experiment showed a clear preference among tasters for Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Ardbeg also went all-in on BBQ-inspired flavors So what about the BizarreBQ experiment? It used twice-toasted casks that had previously held Pedro Ximénez sherry, leaving behind flavors, aromas, and color. And that wasn’t the only thing shaping the whisky’s profile—specially designed casks were also used to infuse this batch with BBQ character. How they got those intense BBQ notes and aromas into the casks remains a closely guarded secret. The tasting notes, however, leave no doubt: there’s unmistakable barbecue influence. These experimental barbecue casks add a smoky, grill-fired twist to the classic Ardbeg experience. Did you know Ardbeg even carves into its casks? The Anamorphic edition is defined by its experimental “High Mocha” treatment. The inside—and even the head—of the used casks were deeply scored to maximize wood contact. This experimental treatment unlocks hidden layers of chocolate and mocha. The distillery calls the whisky a multidimensional experience, balancing sweetness, spice, and sharp smoke in perfect harmony. Ardbeg has no plans to slow down these experiments, so there’s always something new on the horizon. What comes next is anyone’s guess. FAQ - Why does Ardbeg experiment with different casks? Ardbeg uses various cask treatments to introduce new flavors and aromas to its whisky. Specially treated casks were used for releases like BizarreBQ and Anamorphic. - What’s the story behind Ardbeg Eureka? For Ardbeg Eureka, 100 loyal Committee members from 15 countries were invited to a secret tasting experiment. Their preferences were then used to shape the whisky’s development. - What is the High Mocha treatment in Ardbeg Anamorphic? In this experimental process, the inside—and even the base—of the casks were deeply scored to maximize wood interaction. The result includes subtle chocolate and mocha notes.

More than 2,300 spins on the World Famous CaskX Bourbon Wheel joined rare whiskey pours, industry panels and CaskX's barrel giveaway BARDSTOWN, Ky., Sept. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- CaskX concluded its 2026 Kentucky Bourbon Festival presence after 2,354 guests spun the World Famous CaskX Bourbon Wheel over the course of the weekend, culminating in one festival attendee winning an entire barrel of bourbon. The World Famous CaskX Bourbon Wheel remained one of CaskX's central public activations throughout the festival. Friday brought 698 spins before Saturday set a new one-day record with 1,140. Across the weekend, guests received pours from a rotating selection of rare, limited and sold-out whiskeys, including six bottles of Pappy Van Winkle. The weekend's largest prize came through the CaskX Barrel Competition. Fifteen finalists were eventually narrowed to five, each assigned a number from one through five. CaskX CEO Jeremy Kasler made the deciding spin, with the wheel landing on number five and awarding Paul Jones an entire barrel of 2026 Jackson Purchase bourbon. Nichole Beam and Andrew Newton of Jackson Purchase Distillery were on hand for the final spin and celebration. A Weekend of Rare Pours and Unexpected Moments The World Famous CaskX Bourbon Wheel changed throughout the festival as different selections were introduced, giving attendees the opportunity to experience a range of whiskeys over the three-day event. One of the weekend's more unexpected moments came when comedian Jim Gaffigan stepped up to the wheel during a special Fathertime Bourbon takeover. Gaffigan spun for a bourbon from the Fathertime lineup with the winning bottle being opened and shared with guests waiting nearby. The appearance became one of several spontaneous moments around the wheel during a weekend in which thousands of attendees participated and limited edition top shelf pours were shared throughout the festival. Inside the CaskX Lounge Beyond the public World Famous CaskX Bourbon Wheel, the CaskX Lounge served as a gathering place for CaskX clients, investors, distillers and invited guests. Featured guests included Craig Beam and Terry Ballard of Jackson Purchase Distillery; Jade Peterson of Kentucky Artisan Distillery; Matt Gandolfo and Jake Vollmer of Rabbit Hole Distillery; Sam Rock and Ben Franzini of Bluegrass Distillers; Dan Callaway of Bardstown Bourbon Company; and Jon Newton and Brett Connors of Castle & Key. Throughout Friday and Saturday, guests participated in tastings and conversations with whiskey makers from across Kentucky. Discussions covered topics ranging from distilling and maturation to barrel finishing, production methods and the process that takes whiskey from a newly filled barrel to a finished bottle. The lounge also gave guests an opportunity to sample several limited and sold-out releases while hearing directly from the people involved in producing them. Featured pours included the Jackson Purchase Festival Single Barrel, Kentucky Artisan Distillery's Oldham County Reserve 11-Year-Old Bourbon, Rabbit Hole's Dareringer, Bluegrass Distillers' 19-Year-Old Elkwood Reserve, Bardstown Bourbon Company's Single Barrel Master Blender Festival Pick and Castle & Key's Experimental Series Hungarian Tokaji release. The programming reflected a broader goal behind CaskX's festival presence: connecting people interested in bourbon with the production, maturation and people behind the whiskey itself. CaskX Takes Part in Industry Discussions CaskX also participated in several conversations examining developments within the broader bourbon market. Kasler joined Craig Beam, master distiller at Jackson Purchase Distillery and Jade Peterson, master distiller at Kentucky Artisan Distillery, on the Kentucky Bourbon Festival main stage for a discussion moderated by bourbon writer Steve Coomes. The panel examined the current whiskey market and the role contract distilling plays within an industry where many brands depend on outside distillery partners to produce and mature their whiskey. CaskX Director of Whiskey Sara Havens later participated in the Bourbon :30 Whiskey Writers' and Influencers' Panel, alongside Jesse Jones of Bourbon Showdown Podcast, Claudia Coffey of The Best Bet Podcast and spirits journalist David Thomas Tao, also moderated by Coomes. The discussion brought together whiskey writers, podcasters and industry participants to examine current bourbon trends, which developments appear likely to continue and how bourbon culture continues to evolve. The panels expanded CaskX's festival involvement beyond tastings and hospitality, providing an opportunity to participate in conversations about the production and market forces shaping the whiskey industry. Festival Week Begins With CaskX Investor Showcase CaskX began the week ahead of the Kentucky Bourbon Festival with a private Investor Showcase at Rabbit Hole Distillery in Louisville. Guests toured Rabbit Hole's facility and sampled whiskey directly from barrels that had not been released to the public, offering a firsthand look at whiskey while it was still progressing through maturation. The event provided additional context around bourbon barrel investment and the process involved in acquiring and holding whiskey barrels through maturation. Together, the Investor Showcase, Bourbon Wheel, CaskX Lounge and festival panels gave CaskX several opportunities to connect the consumer side of bourbon with the production and barrel ownership infrastructure operating behind it. The 2026 Kentucky Bourbon Festival took place Sept. 10-13 in Bardstown, Kentucky. About CaskX CaskX provides qualified investors access to new make and maturing whiskey from distillery partners in the United States and Scotland. Whisky competitions tend to get the most attention for the rare, expensive bottles that win their top medals, but plenty of affordable whiskies also do well each year. The 2026 results from the International Wine & Spirits Competition, the International Whisky Competition, the SIP Awards, the International Spirits Challenge, and the Bartender Spirits Awards included several core-range bottles that sell for around $60 or less. For this list, we picked five whiskies from those results that each won a Gold medal, a Double Gold, or first place in their category in 2026. Four of them are Scotch, covering single malt, blended malt, and blended Scotch, and the fifth is a Kentucky bourbon. Signup now to make sure you don't miss out on the latest whiskey news and deals. Let’s take a look at what each one won, how it’s made, what it tastes like, and how much you can expect to pay for a bottle. Drinking good whisky doesn’t have to cost the earth. Bowmore 9 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky Award: Spirit Gold Outstanding, 98 points, International Wine & Spirits Competition 2026 Bowmore is the oldest working distillery on Islay, and the 9 Year Old is the starting point of its permanent range. It matures for at least nine years in American oak ex-bourbon casks and European oak Oloroso sherry butts, and it is bottled at 40% ABV. The IWSC judges picked up “Aromas of delicate sea salt, crème caramel, and light peat smoke.” The competition is judged blind, and only spirits scoring 98 or above receive Spirit Gold Outstanding. One of the other Scotch whiskies to reach that level in 2026 was a 35-year-old single cask Bunnahabhain selling for around $1,561. Every Kirkland Bourbon Ranked, From Worst to Best READ THE STORYAt £32.50 / $44, it could be a good first bottle for anyone who hasn’t tried much peated whisky. With other Bowmore whiskies selling for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, drinkers can still appreciate the affordability of the 9 Year Old. Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie Award: 1st Place, Best Single Malt Scotch NAS, International Whisky Competition 2026 | Double Gold, SIP Awards 2026 | Gold, International Spirits Challenge 2026 Bruichladdich was built on the shore of Loch Indaal in 1881 and returned to production in 2000 after closing in the 1990s. The Classic Laddie is the main release in its unpeated range. It is made from 100% Scottish barley, matured on Islay mostly in ex-bourbon casks with some ex-sherry and ex-wine casks, and bottled at 50% ABV without chill filtration or added coloring. The five-digit code on the back label lets you look up the casks and barley used in your batch. Bruichladdich added a 10-year age statement to the label in 2025. The IWC and SIP Awards still listed it as a no age statement whisky, while the ISC entry was the 10 Year Old, but both versions cost about the same. Tasting notes include orchard fruit, citrus, crème brûlée, toffee, marzipan, and a little salt. Expect to pay around $43 to $60 or £33 to £46 for the bottle that won more medals this year than any other on this list. Maclean’s Nose Blended Scotch Whisky Award: Double Gold and Blended Scotch of the Year, 96 points, Bartender Spirits Awards 2026 Maclean’s Nose comes from Adelphi, the independent bottler that opened Ardnamurchan Distillery in 2014. It launched in 2023 and is named after a volcanic headland near the distillery and after whisky writer Charles MacLean, Adelphi’s longtime sensory mentor. The blend is roughly 70% Western Highland and Campbeltown malt and 30% Lowland grain, with plenty of ex-sherry cask influence. It is bottled at 46% ABV with no chill filtration or added coloring, and the label is printed on paper made from draff. The judges, a panel of bartenders and on-premise buyers who tasted blind and only saw prices after scoring, described “a dry fruity palate culminating in a long, smoky finish.” At around $30 / £30, it is the cheapest Scotch on this list. Noble Rebel Orchard Outburst Blended Malt Scotch Whisky Award: Spirit Gold, 95 points, International Wine & Spirits Competition 2026 Noble Rebel is a range of blended malts from the Loch Lomond Group, which owns the Loch Lomond and Glen Scotia distilleries, and its whiskies are created by Master Blender Michael Henry. As a blended malt, Orchard Outburst combines malt whiskies from more than one distillery and contains no grain whisky. Some of the malt in the blend was fermented with Chardonnay wine yeast, which Loch Lomond says brings out more citrus and orchard fruit flavor. It is matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 46% ABV, with no chill filtration or added coloring. The IWSC judges found “delicate tropical fruits, smooth malt, peach juice, and a gentle touch of peat.” At around $49 / £39, it was the most affordable of the eight blended whiskies to win Spirit Gold at this year’s IWSC. Noble Rebel has been gaining momentum recently, and producing some genuinely fantastic whisky. Give this one a try. Early Times Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon Award: 1st Place, Best Bourbon Whiskey (Bottled-in-Bond), International Whisky Competition 2026 The only bourbon on this list, Early Times dates back to 1860. It belonged to Brown-Forman for many years until Sazerac bought the brand in 2020, and it is now made at the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. To be Bottled-in-Bond, it has to come from a single distilling season, be aged for at least four years, and be bottled at 100 proof. The mash bill is 79% corn, 11% rye, and 10% malted barley, and tasting notes include caramel, candy corn, vanilla, brown sugar, and oak spice. The IWC is judged blind and gives out just one gold, one silver, and one bronze in each category, with first place taking the gold. At around $22 / £18, Early Times is the cheapest whiskey on this list. Fantastic value for money, versatile, and relatively easy to find. Win-win. Good Whisky at Everyday Prices Paying more for a bottle of whisky doesn’t guarantee a better one, and this year’s competition results show how many well-made whiskies are available at everyday prices. Whether you like smoky Islay malts, fruity blends, or a sweet, high-corn bourbon, you can find an affordable option in almost every style, and these five are only a small sample of what’s out there. For more ideas, have a look through our best value whiskies for plenty of other bottles at sensible prices. Which cheap or great-value whiskies do you keep coming back to? There were considerably fewer Scotch whisky winners at the 2026 New York International Spirits Competition than American whiskey winners. That should not necessarily be taken as a reflection of quality, however. The competition does not publish entry numbers by category, so we do not know whether Scotch simply attracted fewer submissions. The New York International Spirits Competition is judged exclusively by members of the drinks trade, including retailers, distributors, importers, mixologists, and restaurant beverage professionals. Spirits are tasted blind within their category and price point, with judges considering whether they would actually buy, sell, distribute, or serve each product. 麥卡倫的科學:揭密威士忌80%風味的來源

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Inside The Macallan: The Science Behind 80% of Your Whisky’s Flavour - Man of Many

You may already appreciate the joy of sitting down with a dram of top-quality single malt scotch whisky, but much of that signature flavour comes not from the distillation itself, but from the wood it matures in – the cask. When it comes to cask importance, your mind likely goes to The Macallan. The Scottish distillery puts its sherry-seasoned casks front and centre of every release, with each barrel undergoing a rigorous five-year preparation journey before a single drop of new-make spirit is poured inside. “We estimate from work that we’ve done that in one of our new sherry-seasoned casks, up to 80% of the flavour that you get in a whisky will be coming from that cask during the maturation process,” says Macallan Distiller Diane Stuart, whose background as a forensic scientist gives her a unique perspective on cask treatment. Before stepping into the distillery, Stuart was destined for crime scenes, inspired by TV shows like Silent Witness. “My mum gave me some very wise words about jobs where you’d have to get up at three in the morning to go to very gory scenes,” Stuart laughs. She pivoted her analytical background in genetics and chemistry to the Scotch Whisky Research Institute instead. The Anatomy of a Macallan Cask For The Macallan, the lifecycle of a cask takes half a decade – felling trees, cutting staves, air-drying them locally, and shipping them to Jerez, Spain, for solar drying, heat treatment, and water bending. That meticulous craft comes at a cost: while a standard bourbon cask costs around US$100, The Macallan’s custom sherry-seasoned casks cost roughly US$1,000 (~AU$1,500) each. The newly constructed oak casks are filled with sherry and left to season in Jerez for roughly 18 months. That gentle conditioning process allows European oak to unlock its signature notes of rich dried fruit, warm spice, and deep chocolate without overwhelming the spirit with harsh wood tannins. This devotion to wood is baked directly into the distillery’s DNA through its foundational Six Pillars. Historically, the brand’s reputation for richness dates back to the late 19th century under Roderick Kemp, a local wine merchant who pioneered Spanish sherry-seasoned oak casks on the Estate. For Stuart, investing in sherry-seasoned casks is the business of whisky making. “So many of the flavours in our whisky are going to come from that wood, but you need to treat that wood in the right way,” Stuart tells Man of Many. “We don’t want too ferocious of a heat application. We have tight specifications to gently toast the inside of a cask.” The difference comes down to chemistry. While standard bourbon barrels are seasoned with high-proof spirit, lower-strength sherry (15 to 17% ABV) acts as a gentler conditioning agent before the cask is filled with new-make whisky. This process rounds off harsh oak tannins, helping establish The Macallan as one of the most sought-after and expensive whisky brands in the world. “That lower strength rounds off some of the heavy tannins in the wood and makes them a lot gentler,” Stuart explains. “And then that sherry also penetrates into the wood.” As temperatures in Scotland’s Speyside region fluctuate over years of maturation, the spirit moves in and out of the conditioned wood, drawing out complex flavours developed across the cask’s multi-year journey. To secure this quality, The Macallan recently acquired stakes in Spanish sawmills, cooperages, and historic sherry producer Valdespino, gaining complete end-to-end control over cask production. “We now actually have ownership all the way through from the sawmills cutting the trees… right through to the cask being brought to the distillery ready to be filled with spirit.” Art vs Science: The 8-Year Benchmark and 250 Sniff Tests a Day Once filled, the cask matures undisturbed until reaching its initial eight-year benchmark – a milestone used to project how the liquid will evolve over the next decade or more. Monitoring that progression requires analysing roughly 3,000 samples a month, or 250 a day. To prevent sensory overload and nose burn from cask-strength spirit (~60% ABV), Stuart’s team dilutes samples down to 20% ABV to release subtle aromatic layers. These sensory evaluations are paired with precise colour tint analysis and predictive modelling, creating a detailed profile for every cask that ensures flavour consistency across releases. “It’s probably one of the things I love most about the role – the balance of science and creativity,” Stuart says. “Science provides the understanding of how to build and tweak flavours, but creativity comes in when we develop the product and tell the story of our whisky.” During her time in Australia, Stuart is eager to sample local spirits. “I’ve not tried a lot of Australian whiskies yet, but I’m hoping to try a lot on this trip,” she smiles. “I’ve heard quite a lot about Lark Distillery and I’m really keen to try some while I’m here.” Whether in Speyside or Tasmania, the pursuit of a benchmark dram remains universal. Uile-bheist 蒸餾廠完成酒吧和品酒室翻新,三年來參訪人數幾乎翻倍

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Uile-bheist Distillery and Brewery completes refurbishment - ukinbound.org

Uile-bheist Distillery and Brewery has completed an eight month refurbishment of its tap and tasting rooms as demand for its whisky tours have almost doubled in three years. Uile-bheist Distillery and Brewery became Inverness’ first new distillery in over 130 years when it opened in 2023 and the first ever limited release of its Scotch malt whisky is in the planning stage. The success of tours at its ‘brewstillery’, powered by water from the River Ness, have defied expectation, with the highland capital a magnet for international visitors. Now a redevelopment of its tasting spaces will elevate the visitor experience, increase capacity, and enable tours to operate back-to-back for the first time since the opening in February 2023. Visitor numbers are expected to eclipse 20,000 in the coming weeks and refurbishing the tap and tasting rooms – which contain over 400 malts – creates seating for around 100 guests. Former Victorian kitchens and storage areas have been re-opened and stripped back to original stone, creating space for seating areas planned and executed by Interior designer, Steve Gibson. A former hotel function room, with River Ness views, has been repurposed to create a whisky-themed tasting room where tour guests sample Uile-bheist’s blends and beers. Adorning the walls, alongside antique malt shovels and peat cutters, are creatures from Uile-bheist’s signature Scots mythology series, created by Ken Taylor, a designer for bands such as Pearl Jam and The Pixies. Jonathan Martin, Revenue and Rooms Manager for Uile-bheist’s umbrella group, Turas Hotels, said, “When we opened, there were elements of the unknown. It is a long time since Inverness had a working distillery but each year the tours have grown beyond expectation. The way we ran the tours before, we were annexing bar space in our tap room and tastings were done upstairs, where the whisky and beer making operations were. “We wanted to elevate the levels for our tour guests and this redevelopment has done that. Crucially, it also means we can now run consecutive tours for the first time without having to move the ‘set’ around. The success of the taproom is crucial to Uile-bheist, as a brand. It was a lot of work but it’s easily the best change we’ve made, both for the comfort of guests and operationally. The space feels natural and people are staying longer with us. We’ve removed some harder seating for softer seating and, beside each space, there are chargers so people can even work here, if they want.” The growth in Uile-bheist’s tours comes as Scotch whisky shows signs of recovery, with exports up 6% in the first half of 2026, compared to 2025, according to HMRC data. Aside from producing its own malt and five beers, Uile-bheist is home to a water-source Energy Centre. The sustainability centre removes 250 tonnes carbon each year from the brewstillery’s production whilst also providing green power and heat to the Glen Mhor Hotel, of which it is a part. Solar panels on the distillery roof provide electricity for manufacturing whisky and beer, making the operations amongst the greenest in the country. The £7.5 million system, developed in 2022, recently won the Glen Mhor Hotel and Uile-bheist a world Green Apple Environment Award at St Paul’s Catherdal in London. The distillery, brewery and hotel also just featured in Forbes magazine’s Extraordinary Whisky Hotels and Distillery Stays Worldwide. For more information on Turas Hotels, click here.

In Glasgow, Kelvingrove Café, Pot Still, Blue Dog, Absent Ear and The Gate are taking part, alongside Ninety-Nine and The Tippling House in Aberdeen, Draffens in Dundee and The Singleton Of Glen Ord Distillery Bar near Inverness. More than 50 of the world's top bartenders are in Scotland this month for the World Class Global Finals, competing for the title of World Class Bartender of the Year 2026. Some of the contestants are using the visit to guest-shift at Scottish bars: Ago Perrone of The Connaught Bar in Mayfair and Erik Lorinz of KWANT Mayfair are behind the counter at Gleneagles' American Bar on Saturday 17 October; in Glasgow, Hong Kong's Lorenzo Antinori takes over at Kelvingrove Café the same day, and Singapore bartender Bannie Kang appears at The Gate on Sunday 18 October; and Maura Millia of London's Rosewood Chancery is at Edinburgh's Hey Palu on Wednesday 21 October. James Kemp, head of luxury customer marketing and trade advocacy at Diageo, said: ‘At a time when Scotch is being embraced by cocktail culture around the world, Scotland Served is an opportunity to celebrate the creativity happening in bars across the country.’ Scotland Served, various venues, Scotland, Wednesday 14 October–Sunday 1 November.

Scotch Whisky Experience expands multilingual offering By Joe RogersEdinburgh attraction The Scotch Whisky Experience will now offer tours in 21 languages including Vietnamese. The Scotch Whisky Experience on Castlehill in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town has increased its language capabilities following ‘a strong surge in demand for Czech, Hindi, and both European and Brazilian Portuguese’ tour options. A spokesperson for the venue has said the improved facilities make the iconic Royal Mile venue ‘one of the world’s most globally welcoming whisky destinations’. Guests will now be able to book any of the attraction’s three tour packages in 21 languages including Japanese, Korean, Scottish Gaelic and – for the first time – Vietnamese. The Vietnamese tour option is said to have ‘already seen immediate traction among incoming tour groups’. The move is said to be a response to a newly-published data set which indicates that at least 70% of visitors to The Scotch Whisky Experience from outside the UK. Angela Dineen, operations director at The Scotch Whisky Experience, said: “People do not expect to hear the story of Scotch whisky in their own language, and when they do, it changes the whole visit. Some of the biggest reactions come from our Swedish and Dutch visitors, who tend to have excellent English and simply assume we would not have thought of them. “Every language we add tells you something about who is coming to Scotland and why. Brazilian Portuguese is a good example because our collection was gathered by Claive Vidiz in Brazil, so there’s a great connection there for anyone coming from Brazil.” All 21 language options, which cover audio tours, digital language guides and accessibility features are provided at no extra charge on handheld devices supplied by the venue. The Scotch Whisky Experience also caters to deaf and hard of hearing guests, with digital guides available in British, American and international sign languages. The site opened in 1988 as the Scotch Whisky World Heritage Centre, offering tours, tastings, and an education in whisky production and history. After considerable expansion, The Scotch Whisky Experience now boasts a whisky bar and restaurant, gift shop and a specially built vault housing the Diageo Claive Vidiz Scotch Whisky Collection. São Paulo-born Vidiz assembled some 3,384 bottles of whisky before selling the collection to Diageo in 2006. It has been housed at The Scotch Whisky Experience since 2009. Despite reports of cooling Scotch whisky sales around the world, distilleries across the country are reporting an uptick in whisky tourism. Uile-bheist Distillery and Brewery in Inverness recently completed an eight-month refurbishment of its visitor facilities after seeing demand for whisky tours double in just three years. Earlier this year, Isle of Harris Distillery announced it had welcomed more than 650,000 guests since opening its doors in 2015. Related news Ardbeg tops Milroy’s Scotch whisky tourism guide

Whiskey Foxtrot 漢堡餐廳新店開幕 70-90年代懷舊風格成打卡亮點

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:Whiskey Foxtrot’s new Hoover burger joint is a retro time capsule - Bham Now

Reviewed by: Nathan Watson Whiskey Foxtrot’s new Hoover burger joint is a retro time capsule Reading time: 3 minutes Earlier this summer, burger lovers were surprised to learn family-owned Whiskey Foxtrot Burgers Co. was moving away from its original location to a new spot just down the road on Hoover’s Hwy 150. After visiting the newly opened more Hoover-centric Whiskey Foxtrot at 2801 John Hawkins Parkway next to Tortugas Pizza last week we now know why. More than a burger joint — a destination In addition to its gourmet burgers, hot dogs and handcrafted fries the new burger joint is filled with 1970s, 80s and 90s memorabilia. It’s what makes the new place a destination. The new spot transports you to an age when Gumby, Star Wars, cassette tapes, pay phones, real paper concert tickets and posters and pinball machines were the norm. Our favorite piece of memorabilia at Whiskey Foxtrot? The classic McDowell’s” Employee of the Month framed picture of Eddie Murphy’s character Akeem in the movie Coming to America.” A very appropriate and comical collectible for a burger joint and of course they have it prominently displayed right by the restaurant’s cash register. Nostalgia and fun Whiskey Foxtrot’s owner/operator Ben Williams described to Bham Now how he turned his newly relocated burger joint into his family’s own little pop culture museum. “First and foremost, we got to finally design the place instead of coming behind somebody else’s second generation restaurant and trying to make it work. As far as the vibe and the decor, most of that is concert posters. My brother and I were big music people. We’re both ’80s kids, so anything that gives that sense of nostalgia — a lot of humor for people our age. It’s a very curated collection of things that just speak to us. The restaurant gives us a great place to showcase it, and we love it.” Ben Williams, Whiskey Foxtrot Burgers Don’t forget the burgers and fries Despite all the fun curiosities, Whiskey Foxtrot Burgers is unapologetically a burger joint that uses American wagyu beef in all its burgers. Williams told us their most popular burger is a smashburger called the “Foxtrot” which includes caramelized onions. They have nearly a dozen specialty burger creations with fun names like — Fat Elvis, The Patriot, Triple Lindy and The Buccaneer. View the full specialty burger menu. And don’t forget the gourmet hot dogs. Whiskey Foxtrot offers 7 different options. Follow Whiskey Foxtrot Burgers Interested in checking out the new Whiskey Foxtrot Burgers in Hoover? The online whisky world loves to grumble about being stuck in a “whisky loch,” and I will admit I have joined that chorus more than once. But here is the truth I keep coming back to: there has never been a better time to be a whisky drinker and a flavour chaser. I only wish there was a way to know you are living in the good old days before you have actually left them. So I have pulled together the ten bottles currently sitting on my hit list, and I want to see if any of them deserve a place in your basket ASAP. Signup now to make sure you don't miss out on the latest whiskey news and deals. By Signing up, you accept and agree to our Terms of Services and you acknowledge our Privacy Statement. The Whiskey Wash is protected by reCAPTCHA, and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. The bottle that inspired this whole exercise is the Glasgow 1770 Bourbon Cask 8-Year-Old. At 54% ABV, fully natural and lightly peated, it absolutely slaps. The peat does not throw out much smoke, but it rounds everything together beautifully. This could genuinely sit in my top three from that distillery. Independent bottlers are where much of the real excitement lives right now. Woodrow’s of Edinburgh have a Jane Street Collection release, widely rumoured to be a Glencadam, and my network of spies and informers may have confirmed it. Their no gimmicks, purely flavour focused approach is brilliant to see. Similarly, The Heart Cut No. 24, a six-year-old single cask matured in PX Sherry at 52%, could rival my favourite Ardnamurchans. It is expensive at £75 for a 50cl, and as a committed penny pincher that price puts it just beyond me, but it absolutely deserves the list. Value is where things get interesting. Signatory’s Craigellachie 16-year-old at £45 was wild for a whisky of that age, and I foolishly hesitated. The regret is strong. On the other end, the humble Maker’s Mark reminds me of a perfect dram on honeymoon, though as a channel funded by you lovely slappers, I feel I owe the Scotch City camp more attention. Elsewhere, I have got my eyes on the Jura 12 Oloroso edition, the Glengoyne White Oak, the Filey Bay Porter Cask, and the Kilchoman Rockside 11-year-old, which quietly slipped under the radar despite that hefty age statement. The Deanston 12 also deserves a revisit. And nothing has excited me more lately than Wylye Distillery in Wiltshire, where one man is chasing pure quality in a world of cold corporate hands squeezing the magic out of everything. Every Kirkland Bourbon Ranked, From Worst to Best READ THE STORYSo that is my hit list. Tell me, which bottle have I missed, and what is sitting at the top of your own shopping list right now? 奶油太妃糖的身世之謎——它真的含有奶油和蘇格蘭威士忌嗎?

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Tara Deshpande’s Butterscotch joke reveals curious food history - LIFESTYLE - GENERAL - Kerala Kaumudi

Butterscotch is a familiar presence in ice creams, cakes, puddings and other desserts. But what does the name ‘butterscotch’ actually mean? And does the flavour really have anything to do with butter and Scotch? That was the curious question raised on social media by Tara Deshpande Tennebaum, a former actor who went on to establish herself as a trained chef and food writer. She has studied at the French Culinary Institute in New York and Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and London, and is the author of cookbooks including A Sense for Spice: Recipes and Stories from a Konkan Kitchen and An Indian Sense of Salad. Her post, however, began with a joke. Butterscotch ice cream, she suggested, had been “cheating” people for years despite containing neither butter nor Scotch. “Shocking! Butter Scotch ice cream has been cheating the public for years. It has neither butter nor Scotch in it!! Can someone let Tukaram Mundhe know,” she wrote on X, referring humorously to food safety official Tukaram Mundhe. The joke sparked curiosity about the real story behind the flavour, prompting Deshpande to follow it up with a detailed account of butterscotch’s history. The first misconception to clear up is the obvious one: butterscotch is not a combination of butter and Scotch whisky. Traditional butterscotch was a confection made with butter and sugar, with historical recipes also using treacle, a thick syrup produced during sugar refining. An 1848 recipe for “Doncaster butterscotch”, for instance, called for butter, sugar and treacle. So, the original confection really did contain butter. The Scotch connection, however, is much less certain. The exact origin of the word “scotch” remains disputed. One widely cited theory links it to the process of “scotching” or cutting the cooked confection into pieces before it hardened completely. Other theories have connected the word to Scotland or to “scorch”, but none has been conclusively established. Butterscotch has a particularly strong historical association with Doncaster in Yorkshire, England. According to Deshpande’s account, its story goes back to 1817, when Samuel Parkinson began making a confection known as “Butter Drops” in Doncaster. The Parkinson business later became closely associated with butterscotch and helped make the sweet one of the town’s best-known products. The precise claim that Parkinson invented butterscotch in 1817, however, is harder to establish as fact. What is clear is that early references strongly associate the confection with Doncaster. A recipe for “Doncaster butterscotch” appeared in the Liverpool Mercury in 1848, while the term had also appeared in Lady’s Newspaper the previous year. The 1848 recipe used butter, sugar and treacle, ingredients consistent with the traditional confection. The butterscotch most Indians grew up eating is somewhat removed from the original confection. In India, the name is now strongly associated with butterscotch ice cream, particularly the crunchy praline or nutty pieces commonly associated with the flavour. Deshpande traces this distinctly Indian version to Kwality’s butterscotch ice cream, which she says was launched in 1958 with praline added to the flavour. According to her account, that addition helped establish the association between butterscotch and crunchy caramelised nuts in India. Over time, the flavour moved well beyond ice cream, finding its way into puddings, cakes, sauces, sundaes and other desserts. So, the next time you order a butterscotch ice cream, there is indeed a connection to butter — but not to Scotch whisky. And that mysterious “scotch”? Its exact story remains a matter of debate.

The Scotch Whisky Experience has expanded its tour offerings to 21 languages and invested in enhanced translation guides, positioning the iconic Royal Mile venue as one of the world’s most globally welcoming whisky destinations. Built around the ethos of “helping the world to fall in love with Scotch whisky”, the venue has steadily expanded its language capabilities from just six languages when it opened in 1988 to 21 today. The attraction has released new dataset insights showing how multilingual storytelling is opening Scottish heritage to an increasingly diverse global audience. With more than 70% of its guests arriving from outside the UK, the venue caters to visitors from every corner of the world. While long established international markets lead overall attendance, with the United States representing 24% of guests, followed by France at 7%, and Germany and the Netherlands at 4% each, the data shows a strong surge in demand for Czech, Hindi, and both European and Brazilian Portuguese. Vietnamese is the newest language introduced at The Scotch Whisky Experience and has already seen immediate traction among incoming tour groups. By providing full translations across 21 languages, the attraction ensures international visitors can fully immerse themselves in the story of Scotland’s national drink. Additionally, to support the Deaf community and hard of hearing visitors, the venue partnered with Deaf Action to create British Sign Language (BSL) and American Sign Language (ASL) digital guides, and more recently also added International Sign.
