🔥 Sazerac

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:Sazerac buys shuttered Kentucky distillery to boost spirits production - Food Dive

Dive Brief: - Sazerac acquired a Kentucky distillery, the company’s latest investment in building out its spirits portfolio. - The Buffalo Trace owner said Friday the Garrard County Distilling facility in Lancaster, Kentucky, will provide additional production capacity to support growing demand for its spirit brands. The whiskey company reportedly bought the plant during a court ordered auction for about $20 million. - Last year, Sazerac disclosed plans to spend $1 billion on new and existing facilities to expand spirits production in and around Kentucky. Dive Insight: Sazerac has had a busy year, aggressively expanding with new acquisitions and innovations in buzzy categories like ready-to-drink cocktails and soju. The new distillery purchase, however, signifies that though it’s expanding into other segments, it's not abandoning its original whiskey focus. The company will use the property to service its entire portfolio with production and aging capabilities. The addition of the Lancaster facility builds on Sazerac’s other investments in Kentucky. Sazerac completed a $1.2 billion expansion project at its Buffalo Trace facility last year and a combined $90 million for its Barton 1792 Distillery and The Glenmore Distillery. “Even with all the investments we have made to expand, we need more supply to keep up with demand, and the addition of the Lancaster facility gives us valuable distilling capabilities to support that growth," Sazerac President and CEO Jake Wenz said in a statement The newly acquired property includes two 20,000-square-foot barrel warehouses and sits on 210 acres of land, according to a company statement. Sazerac plans to use the existing infrastructure to support the company's "broader production needs," according to a statement. The Garrard County Distilling facility opened in 2024 and closed just a year later due to financial difficulties. Sazerac said it intends to hire more workers as the company revives operations at the plant. “Kentucky has been an important part of Sazerac's story for many years, and we're proud to continue investing and growing here,” Wenz said. “Today, nearly 3,000 team members are part of Sazerac’s Kentucky operations, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue growing that team.”

Sazerac, one of the world’s largest spirits companies, has announced the acquisition of the Kentucky based Garrard County Distilling Company, marking the latest step in the company’s continued growth and long-term investment in production. The Garrard County Distilling Company site joins Sazerac’s broader distilling network in the state, which includes Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown and The Glenmore Distillery in Owensboro. The acquisition represents an important addition to Sazerac’s production capabilities, providing additional capacity to support continued growth across the company’s portfolio of spirits brands. Garrard County Distilling Company, which opened in 2024, sits on approximately 210 acres and includes two column stills and two 20,000-square-foot barrel warehouses. Sazerac will utilise the facility’s existing infrastructure and capabilities to support its broader production needs. The company expects to hire additional team members initially, with the workforce set to grow over time as operations at the facility develop. Commenting on the news, Jake Wenz, President and CEO of Sazerac, said: “Kentucky has been an important part of Sazerac’s story for many years, and we’re proud to continue investing and growing here. Today, nearly 3,000 team members are part of Sazerac’s Kentucky operations, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue growing that team. Even with all the investments we have made to expand, we need more supply to keep up with demand, and the addition of the Lancaster facility gives us valuable distilling capabilities to support that growth. We’re excited to become part of the Garrard County community.” Over the past five years, Sazerac has invested approximately $50 million at Barton 1792 Distillery, including a new boiler house, additional fermenters, expanded bottling operations and three new ageing warehouses, increasing barrel storage capacity by 25%, alongside upgrades to existing equipment and facilities. In January 2025, the company completed a ten-year, $1.2 billion expansion project at Buffalo Trace Distillery. The project included a new still house, boiler house and bottling operation, an expanded visitor centre, 20 additional fermenters and 19 new ageing warehouses. Sazerac said it will continue to make significant long-term investments in its Kentucky distilleries, strengthening production capabilities, modernising facilities and supporting the future of bourbon production in the state.

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:‘Unfinished business’ for American whiskey as US-Canada trade talks collapse - Global Drinks Intel

Canadian spirits are the latest products to be added to the US’s tariffs list, after negotiations between the neighbouring countries ended unsuccessfully on Friday (21 August). Exports of spirits from Canada into the US will be impacted by a 50% tariff, countering a boycott of American spirits that has been running in some Canadian provinces since March last year. While the move had been flagged by US authorities a month ago, the progression to implementation was confirmed following the collapse of the talks last week. Responding to the development, US trade association the Distilled Spirits Council of the US laid the blame for the US tariff at the feet of the Canadian boycott. “We appreciate the administration’s recognition that American distillers have been unfairly targeted by these Canadian provincial sales bans,” said CEO Chris Swonger. “This discriminatory treatment of US spirits products has persisted for more than a year and a half, causing significant economic harm to our industry. “It is unfortunate that the Canadian provinces’ continued refusal to return US spirits products to store shelves has led to this outcome.” Speaking to Bloomberg over the weekend, the CEO of the American Whiskey Association, Michael Bilello, encouraged both sides to “return to the negotiating table”. “For American whiskey producers, this remains unfinished business,” he said. “For a year and a half now, American whiskey has been shut out from most of the provinces in Canada. We were really looking forward to reconnecting with our Canadian consumer, but obviously that’s not happening. “We received good indications yesterday there was progress being made, so to learn about this late last night … was really unfortunate.” Alberta and Saskatchewan are the only provinces that have since lifted their bans on American spirits.

🔥 Jack Daniel's

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:Whiskey-soaked 'Succession:' Jack Daniel's heirs in bitter family feud as $15B hostile bid looms - New York Post

Whiskey-soaked ‘Succession:’ Jack Daniel’s heirs in bitter family feud as $15B hostile bid looms See more of our coverage in your search results. Add The New York Post on GoogleThe billionaire heirs to the Jack Daniel’s fortune are reportedly embroiled in a bitter family feud — with a pair of rebel brothers blasting their relatives and company brass as a $15 billion hostile takeover bid looms over the storied whiskey maker. More than 130 members of the Brown clan received a seven-page broadside from W.L. Lyons Brown III and his brother Stuart Brown accusing the board of Brown-Forman, which owns Jack Daniel’s, of “rewarding failure” as the company’s shares have lost roughly 60% of their value in recent years. “The numbers are stark and undeniable,” the bourbon bros wrote in the July 10 missive, according to the Wall Street Journal. “Brown-Forman’s stock price has fallen from the mid-$70s per share to the mid-$20s per share over the past three years, eliminating billions of dollars of generational wealth for the Brown family and all other shareholders.” The family revolt has erupted as Louisville-based Brown-Forman — the 156-year-old company behind Jack Daniel’s and Woodford Reserve — fends off an unsolicited $15 billion cash offer from crosstown rival Sazerac, the family-owned maker of Buffalo Trace bourbon. CEO Lawson Whiting is also headed for the exits as sales have stalled and the Brown clan — whose collective fortune Forbes has put at $11 billion — squabbles over the future of the family empire. At the center of the drama is Lyons Brown, 66, a colorful fifth-generation heir who was pressured to leave Brown-Forman in 2002 following a clash with his uncle, then-CEO Owsley Brown II, according to the Journal. Lyons Brown once reportedly ruffled feathers by flipping an organizational chart upside down at a sales meeting and urging employees to challenge conventional wisdom. Lyons Brown later started his own booze business, competing against the family company, and co-founded a now-defunct honey venture that touted “low-disturbance” beekeeping. “The letter speaks for itself,” Lyons Brown told the Journal. Now he and his brother are targeting the relatives who wield power over Brown-Forman. Their broadside accused the board and other family members of keeping shareholders in the dark about failed merger talks with French liquor giant Pernod Ricard and questioned why the company entertained that deal while rebuffing Sazerac. “If the Pernod Ricard transaction was Plan A, what is Plan B? The Company is in crisis,” the brothers fumed in their missive. They also skewered the strategy for Jack Daniel’s, comparing the iconic Tennessee whiskey to Baskin-Robbins because it is sold in so many flavors. The descendants of founder George Garvin Brown still control the publicly traded company through more than 70% of its voting Class A shares. Wolf Pen Branch, a family investment vehicle formed to unify the sprawling clan’s voting power, controls about 60% of the shares by itself — effectively giving it the power to block a sale. Lyons and Stuart Brown never joined Wolf Pen, leaving the dissident brothers with limited sway unless they can persuade other relatives to join their revolt. Wolf Pen has already rejected Sazerac’s takeover proposal, saying it did not align with its members’ vision for Brown-Forman’s future. The company’s board subsequently said the offer wasn’t “actionable.” But Sazerac appealed directly to Brown family shareholders on July 24, saying its offer represented a 40% premium to Brown-Forman’s recent trading price. “Our offer remains open and our conviction is only enhanced,” Sazerac wrote. Three days after the Brown brothers circulated their letter, Whiting told the board he would step down once a successor is found. The turmoil comes as Brown-Forman battles weakening demand. The company reported $3.9 billion in sales for its latest fiscal year while net income fell 18%, according to the Journal. The company also laid off 12% of its roughly 5,400 employees last year, and closed its Louisville cooperage. Trying to keep the clan together is chairman Marshall Farrer, 55, a fifth-generation descendant and the 10th Brown family member to hold the title. The family once printed a “Family Constitution” on bottles of Old Forester pledging “long-term growth and independence through the family’s control” and “trust, respect and diplomatic candor” among relatives. That pledge is now getting jolted as jarringly as a couple shots of Jack’s without a chaser. “Sometimes you think of the Southern company that’s very nice and generous with each other,” Farrer told shareholders in July. “There’s a lot more toughness going on.”

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:Whiskey reps urge U.S., Canada to work toward trade resolution - Spectrum News

WASHINGTON — Last week, ahead of the 50% tariffs he planned to impose on a wide range of Canadian products, President Donald Trump announced a three-day pause to finalize a deal. “We had a very good conversation with the prime minister last night, and we’ve come to a deal with Canada,” Trump said Wednesday. American whiskey producers had hoped an agreement would spur Canadian provinces to put U.S.-made spirits back on the shelves of government liquor stores. All but two provinces stopped selling American alcohol last year, in retaliation for Trump’s tariffs on Canadian products including steel and aluminum. But over the weekend, trade talks between the U.S. and Canada collapsed and the president’s 50% tariffs went into effect. “They asked too much and they offered too little,” said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday. “Canada will match Washington's new tariffs, dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses.” Trump posted on social media Monday: “On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with. They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!” The Toasts Not Tariffs Coalition, representing distillers, hospitality workers and others, said in a statement: “We recognize the Trump administration's efforts to encourage the Canadian provinces to return American spirits and wine products to store shelves and understand that these retaliatory tariffs are intended to restore market access for U.S. producers. However, a 50% tariff on Canadian spirits, wine and glass bottles will also have consequences for U.S. hospitality businesses.” Todd Belt, a professor and director of political management at The George Washington University, said tariffs are not spread uniformly across the country. “Donald Trump is looking at our trade balances and imbalances, punishing certain countries, but one of the things I don't think he really realizes is that there are certain states, and certain localities that really bear the brunt of some of these decisions he makes, and for Kentucky, the whiskey industry, they export a lot, and this can really hurt them,” said Belt. After Canadian provinces pulled American alcohol from shelves, U.S. liquor exports to Canada dropped 70% year-over-year from March through December of last year, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. The council, the American Whiskey Association and the Toasts Not Tariffs Coalition are all pushing for the U.S. and Canada to reach a resolution restoring market access for American liquor.

Jack Daniel's

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Forget Jack Daniel's — Some Of The World's Best-Selling Whiskeys Come From India - Tasting Table

Forget Jack Daniel's — Some Of The World's Best-Selling Whiskeys Come From India Brands like Jack Daniel's or Johnnie Walker are so ubiquitous, it can make it seem like we live in a world divided into kingdoms of American or Scotch whisky, (with a few Irish and Japanese strongholds). That's not true. The best-selling whiskies in the world are Indian, and by a staggering amount. For several years, the Spirits Business Brand Champion's Report has illuminated how dominant Indian whisky sales are in the global market in terms of volume, and this year's is no different. Of the top 10 whisky/whiskey brands, 60% were from India. These whiskies took the first four spots, with the top drop being Royal Stag, followed by McDowell's No.1, Officer's Choice, and Imperial Blue respectively. Number five is Johnnie Walker, the world's best selling scotch. Jack Daniel's only ranks seventh, recording less than half the amount of whiskey sold compared to Royal Stag. There are few factors that help Indian whiskies achieve such high volume. The country's comparatively large population of over 1.4 billion people creates a massive market for domestic sales. This market is also insulated by high tariffs on imported spirits, 75% for scotch (recently dropped from 150%), and duties of between 100% and 150% for American-made whiskeys. That means the very affordable and locally relevant Indian brands are more accessible for "everyday" drinking that fuels volume sales. Royal Stag can cost the equivalent of around $7 USD per bottle domestically. Meanwhile, India also exports its whisky to global markets, growing volume sales overseas. The rankings are somewhat controversial There is no shortage of controversy in Indian whisky's status as the best-selling in the word, with dispute about whether these spirits actually count as whisky, due to the majority of them including neutral molasses-derived spirits, rather than grain alone. This isn't permitted in most definitions of whisky or whiskey around the world, but it's long been a unique aspect of making the spirit in India. However, Royal Stag, now the world's top selling whisky by a considerable margin, first made a name for itself by blending imported scotch with Indian grain spirits rather than molasses, which aligns it more closely to traditional definitions. India consumes nearly half the world's whisky, and while spirit sales in America shrunk by 2.2% in 2025, the Indian whisky market is projected to grow by around 7% every year until 2034, per IMARC GROUP. Royal Stag stole the top spot from the other Indian whisky leader, United Spirits-owned McDowell's No.1, which held the position for six years. Royal Stag was launched in 1995 by Seagrams, which was purchased by Pernod Rocard in 2001. Those who've tried it rate Royal Stag's flagship whisky as smooth and medium-bodied with malt notes, as well as classic vanilla, dried fruit, oak, and light smoke. McDowell's No.1 Original also delivers confectionary notes of vanilla, chocolate, butterscotch, and fruity and citrus notes. Both are described as being sweet, and while drinkable on their own, shine more in refreshing formats; on rocks or in mixers or cocktails.

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:Can wine and whisky make you richer? The case for investing in drinkables - NZ Herald

Online only Put aside shares, property and bonds for a moment. Some investors are putting their money into wine, whisky, watches, classic cars, Lego and other tangible treasures. But are these passion assets a genuine investment opportunity or simply expensive hobbies? What are the markets, returns, risks and surprising economics behind increasingly popular alternatives to add to an investment portfolio? Today, drinkables like whisky and wine. In the beginning, Gertjan Verdickt was just another overwhelmed shopper in the wine aisle, struggling to find something to drink. Sick of trying to decide based solely on price and what he could read on the label, he enrolled in a wine appreciation course. Although the future Auckland University senior lecturer in finance didn’t realise it at the time, it was a decision that would change his life. When he enrolled in the course, Verdickt was an academic focusing on the factors influencing stock prices, but he quickly became fascinated by what he saw as the huge investment potential presented by wine. Seeing it as comparatively overlooked and understudied as an investment class, he changed the direction of his research to the factors driving wine prices and hasn’t looked back since. During his time researching stocks, people would ask him where to invest and he would always direct them to the books and resources he found most helpful. When he pivoted to wine investing, he noticed there were no books. Together with his friend Jürgen Hanssens, he set out to change that. “For stocks, you open any newspaper, you see stock prices,” Verdickt says. “You open any website that has a financial angle, you see information. There’s no such thing for passion assets. For passion assets you really need to start looking for it. And that’s also where the name came from, because you really need to be passionate about it to actually start investing, because there is no clear-cut answer on what you should do, how you should do it.” Verdickt and Hanssens’s book The Passion Portfolio investigates the brave new world of what they call “passion assets” or “alternative investments”, which they define using four criteria: 1. They have a large (or growing) market. 2. They are not traded on traditional exchanges, such as the New York Stock Exchange. 3. They typically lack a daily market price, unlike stocks. 4. They are tangible assets (real, physical items). Some examples besides wine: Lego, vintage cars, baseball cards, musical instruments, jewellery, bags and watches. Verdickt says the opportunities are significant for people who are well informed in any of these areas. His own investments in wine are generating roughly double the returns of his investments in traditional assets. Much of this comes down to “information asymmetry”. He says that no matter how much time you spend researching information on big stocks in the conventional exchanges, it’s very hard to get an edge on the enormous number of people – many of them far better resourced than most of us – who are doing the same thing. “However, if you go into the passion asset world, information is very scattered. So, we call this very inefficient. You don’t need to spend a whole lot of time collecting information and doing your homework to have a very nice return. I think that’s the beauty of it. I won’t say it’s particularly easy to make money, but you don’t need to do as much as you would have to do with stocks.” But along with the opportunities come significant risks. One of the biggest is liquidity. Whereas selling a stock on the New York Stock Exchange can be done at the press of a button, selling an alternative investment requires finding a buyer prepared to pay the price you want to sell at. The smaller the market, the harder this is. Investing in wine and whisky (drinkables) Along with wine, Verdickt has developed an extensive interest and level of expertise in whisky, which like wine is classified under the term drinkables. He describes it as “one of the only investment classes that can improve with age”. Wine, in particular, is highly accessible as an asset class. Verdickt and Hanssens state that the average price of a bottle bought at an auction is slightly over US$600 (approximately NZ$1020) but that investment-grade wine – they use the example of a 2019 bottle of Italian tignanello – can be bought for around 120 euros (NZ$236). They compare this to buying a single share in Lotus Bakeries, maker of Biscoff cookies, which, at the time of writing, cost roughly 10,500 euros. Of course, it’s possible to go completely mad with wine too. In March, Sotheby’s sold a single bottle of 1945 Romanée-Conti for US$812,000 (approximately NZ$1.359 million), a world record. While it is possible to invest in wine by buying directly, a growing number of online platforms allow indirect investment, meaning you can invest in wine without having to take delivery of bottles. Verdickt’s research has turned up some interesting findings: high-priced wines don’t seem to outperform low-priced wines, but wines that receive high ratings in wine guides do seem to outperform those that receive low ratings. As an example, the Vinovest website notes that the 2017 pinot noir from Martinborough winemaker Ata Rangi sold off the shelf for US$75; between 2023 and 2025, the same bottles sold for an average US$105 on the secondary market, an increase of 40%. Perhaps even more surprisingly, wines that had a very high investment return in the previous year don’t necessarily seem to outperform wines that had a low return. The Passion Portfolio quotes research by data analyst Robbe Van Tillo during the period 2003-2022, showing wine has delivered an average return of 8.95% annually, making it comparable to the returns on stock investments over that same period. The market for whisky is currently about one-third the size of the market for wine. This means liquidity – also a problem in the wine market – is a far bigger consideration when it comes to whisky. However, one advantage whisky does have over wine, Verdickt says, is that it almost never spoils, making it ideal for longer term investing. It has also demonstrated some spectacular returns. In their book, Verdickt and Hanssens note whisky prices rose by an annual average of 17.5% between 2013 and 2020, outperforming the stock market and providing returns nearly double those of wine over the same period. One downside to both whisky and wine is the aforementioned spectre of liquidity. The point at which you sell can make an outsized difference to your returns. “Buying is super easy,” Verdickt says. “It’s the selling part that is where you make or break your portfolio.” In a recession, in particular, drinkables become very difficult to sell. Verdickt trades internationally and keeps his investments in drinkables to only about 10 to 15% of his portfolio. A large part of the rest of it is buying a garden variety exchange-traded fund, “without even thinking about it”, every two weeks, using dollar cost averaging to lower the overall risk profile of his portfolio. Because, while the promise of spectacular returns are great, not losing everything is even greater. This story is of a general nature, and is not intended to be used as financial advice.

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:This is what you need to know about bourbon - FavorFlav.com

This is what you need to know about bourbon October, autumn, rain, grey skies. Name me someone who looks forward to this time of year. Uh, well, me! Because if there’s anything great about the final months of the year, it’s the thought of a delicious glass of bourbon. When summer is over and the weather gets colder, this American whiskey really comes into its own. That’s what they think at Jim Beam too, the world’s number-one bourbon – they recently kicked off whisky season with the biggest Dutch whisky tasting ever. Fred Noe, seventh-generation Master Distiller and great-grandson of Jim Beam, came to the Netherlands especially for the occasion. A perfect moment to ask him a few questions. Let’s get straight to the point: what exactly is bourbon? “Bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. Whiskey can be made from different grains, and in America there was an abundance of corn. That’s why American whiskey is often made from corn. Put simply, bourbon is American whiskey made with at least 51% corn.” Where does the name ‘bourbon’ come from? “Bourbon is the name of the place where the drink was first distilled: Old Bourbon. Today, this place is called Bourbon County, and it is located in Kentucky.” What about the ‘e’ in whiskey? “Most whisky comes from Scotland, Japan, Ireland, America and Canada, but whisky can be made all over the world and is almost always spelled without an ‘e’. The only countries that spell it ‘whiskey’ instead of ‘whisky’ are Ireland and America.” How does bourbon differ from other whisky? “Because bourbon is made with at least 51% corn, all bourbons have a delicious sweetness that you don’t find in most barley- and rye-based whiskies. That sweetness makes bourbon the ‘sweet spot’ of whisky. The wood also has a major influence on the whisky’s flavour.” Should we drink it neat or in a cocktail? “It’s all good! Drink it any damn way you please! Neat, with ice, Beam with a coke, with ginger beer, in a cocktail, such as a whiskey sour; bourbon is wonderfully versatile, and you can take it in any direction. Bourbon can turn a conversation into a party!” Since you started as Master Distiller, you’ve brought quite a bit of innovation to the bourbon shelf. From Jim Beam Double Oak and Devil’s Cut to flavoured bourbon and so much more. “Jim Beam is the best-selling bourbon in the world; we sell around 10 million cases a year. And to think that back in the days (the seventies), bourbon wasn’t popular at all. My father also tried to keep me a little away from the business. But, well, blood is thicker than water. I thought, if it didn’t work out, I could always do something else. But I’m still here (laughs). And my son has since joined the company too. For 224 years, my family has focused on making an excellent bourbon. Innovation is part of that; consumers like experimenting with new flavours and styles. And experimentation is simply in our DNA.” What should we try first tonight? “A glass of Jim Beam with a piece of dark Godiva chocolate. Oh boy. And if you don’t like sweet things, prosciutto and bourbon are also a golden combination. And bourbon in your salad dressing, in your barbecue sauce or sticky spareribs with bourbon, with mild cheese, fish marinated in bourbon… Like I said, you can take bourbon in any direction!” Sweet bourbon dreams If you’re thinking, ‘Wonderful, bring on autumn’, I have more good news for you. Since recently, you can immerse yourself in Jim Beam – on location! Book an overnight stay via Airbnb (for 23 dollars per night) at Jim Beam itself, in the 1919 American Stillhouse, on the Jim Beam grounds. Visit the distillery, take part in a bourbon tasting and enjoy an authentic Kentucky barbecue in the evening. The stillhouse accommodates a maximum of six people, and the bar? It’s well stocked. With bourbon, of course. Read also:

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:English whisky distillery at Bodmin Jail gets green light - The Spirits Business

English whisky distillery at Bodmin Jail gets green light The private equity group behind Père Magloire Calvados has secured planning approval to build an English whisky distillery on the site of a former prison in Cornwall. Cornwall Council has approved plans for The Bodmin Jail Distillery as part of an £80 million (US$109.2m) investment to restore the former prison, which closed in 1927. Bodmin Jail reopened as a tourist attraction in 2020, allowing visitors to explore the history of the 18th-century prison. The development created more than 100 jobs with the opening of a museum and hotel on the former prison site. Spirit Capital is building on the £80m investment by constructing a distillery that will create 15 permanent jobs. The approved development will restore the Grade II-listed Governor’s House and Chaplaincy and bring them back into active use, alongside a purpose-built ‘grain-to-glass’ distillery. Swiss private equity group Spirit Capital owns three Calvados brands and two Armagnacs through its French arm Spirit France Diffusion, which it acquired in 2007. Spirit Capital recently purchased Ireland’s Killarney Brewing & Distilling Company site after it faced financial difficulties. Through the new project, Spirit Capital aims to make small-batch premium spirits that connect the county with the landscape. The main focus of The Bodmin Jail Distillery will be Cornish whisky made from locally grown grain, and distilled and matured on the Bodmin Jail site. It will also produce gin inspired by local botanicals, and vodka. Once open to the public, visitors will be able to follow the journey of raw ingredients, fermentation, distillation, and maturation, before tasting the products. The distillery is expected to open in 2027 with the first gin and vodka to be unveiled shortly after, and the Cornish whisky once it has matured. In addition to the distillery across a 1,000sqm space, the development will include two large tasting rooms that can be booked for private events, alongside a speakeasy cocktail bar in one of the site’s historical buildings and a curated gift shop. Mark Gorman, director of acquisitions and development at Spirit Capital, said: “Planning permission is the point at which this project really starts to become tangible. “We expect construction to begin in the next months, and it is hugely exciting to know that we are now moving from plans and drawings into delivery. “Bodmin Jail has already undergone an extraordinary transformation, and the distillery gives us the opportunity to build on that success, while remaining true to the history and character of the site.” The distillery has been designed in response to its location close to Bodmin Moor, with a planted roof that will help the new building sit within the surrounding landscape. Restoring and reusing the site’s existing historic buildings will also be a key part of the development. The equity group intends to work with the local agricultural and supply sectors to source grain grown in the county, which it says would create more jobs for Cornish contractors, specialist trades, and suppliers. Spirit Capital said its Bodmin Jail and Killarney distillery projects reflect its “long-term approach to developing working production sites where provenance, craftsmanship, hospitality and visitor experience come together”. Its Spirit France subsidiary operates three distilleries: two in Calvados, Normandy, and one in Armagnac. It also has three bottling lines and four cellars for ageing its spirits. Bodmin Jail is not the only former prison converted into a distillery. In 2024, McConnell’s opened a brand home in Belfast, transforming an old Victorian prison into an Irish whiskey distillery. The Bodmin Jail Distillery is set to join several other spirits makers in Cornwall, including Southwestern Distillery (producer of Tarquin’s gin and Tinner Bros whisky), Rosemullion Distillery, Pocketful of Stones, and English Spirit’s Treguddick Distillery. Highland Park 推出大師釀酒師 Gordon Motion 退休紀念酒:Sherry Skies 19 年份

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:Highland Park's Master Whisky Maker Retires With A Whisky Swansong: Sherry Skies - Esquire Singapore

One of the giants at Edrington, Gordon Motion, Highland Park's master whisky maker, retired after a long illustrious 27-year career. As the architect of shaping the Orkney distillery's signature smoke-and-sherry style, Motion also has a hand in expanding Highland Park's core and luxury ranges (which includes 21-, 30-, and 40-year-old expressions), and masterminded the House's oldest-ever 56-year-old bottling (we wrote about Highland Park's second oldest expression here). For his final bow, Motion gives us Sherry Skies (ABV48.8%; 700ml), a limited-edition 19-Year-Old. Chosen by Motion, Sherry Skies is created from three American oak bourbon casks and six sherry-seasoned European oak quarter casks—the smaller cask sizes of the sherry give a potent sherry-seasoned flavour to the maturing whiskies, while the bourbon casks tame the tannins and add a balance and smoothness to them. The packaging is inspired by the Orkney summer sunsets, and each bottle comes with a hand-signed personal note from Motion, that reflects on his tenure with Highland Park. With a deep sherry influence that lifts notes of dried fruits and tannic spices. On the nose, you get a toasted oak and fragrant vanilla, which barrels down to a caramelised fruit, spice and citrus peel on the palate. For the finish, there are spicy notes of anise and cinnamon, before it settles onto a lingering hint of heathered peat smoke. Only 1,200 bottles of Highland Park's Sherry Skies exist and is available purchase.

蒸餾廠焦點:Widow Jane Distillery(紐約布魯克林)

Google News(Whisky 綜合)|原題:Distillery Spotlight: Widow Jane Distillery - Garden & Gun

招牌酒款包括 Widow Jane 10 Year Bourbon(五桶批次調配,來自三州原酒)與 Baby Jane(採用紐約與肯塔基州種植的特有高油脂傳家玉米),呈現複雜風味與蜂蜜、太妃糖、焦糖與草本香氣。

Established: 2012 Location: Brooklyn, New York Origins: Once sharing its old brick building in the Red Hook waterfront neighborhood with a chocolatier, Widow Jane expanded into the entire space as it blended sourced whiskey from across the country and grew its own distilling capabilities. “I’m a homegrown distiller,” says Sienna Jevremov (pictured above), who led tastings at the start before advancing to head distiller and blender. Flagship bottles: Widow Jane 10 Year Bourbon is blended in five-barrel batches sourced from three states, delivering what Jevremov describes as the distillery’s goal of “bourbon that is intense and complex with layers of flavor.” Baby Jane includes a proprietary, high-oil heirloom corn grown and distilled in both New York and Kentucky for a “fun bourbon with a sweetness that’s more honey, butterscotch, and caramel, plus interesting herbaceous notes.” What makes it special: “Water is a big part of our identity,” Jevremov says. Drawing from the same upstate mines that provided cement for building New York City landmarks, Widow Jane transports tankers of high-calcium, high-magnesium limestone water to Red Hook to use in proofing its whiskeys. “It gives sweetness more backbone. It feels like biting into a candy.” Visitor experience: Weekend tours take visitors through the distilling and blending process and into one of Widow Jane’s rickhouses across the street, while the on-site bar, Botanica, offers flights and cocktails. Where to find: Widow Jane expressions are available nationwide and at select international duty-free shops. The Dalmore has released the latest expression in its Distillery Select Series, a 14-year-old Highland single malt finished in Semisecco Marsala casks. The limited-edition whisky will go on general release on 31 August 2026, priced at £350, with just 1,110 bottles available. Crown Royal x Juicy Couture Drop Limited Edition Y2K-Inspired Merch READ THE STORYThe Distillery Select Series, which debuted in 2024, showcases small parcels of stock hand-selected from The Dalmore’s dunnage warehouses. For the 2026 edition, The Dalmore said its whisky makers aimed to select a spirit that revealed “a different dimension” of the distillery’s flavor profile while remaining rooted in the house style. The whisky was matured initially in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels. It was then finished for one year and nine months in Semisecco Marsala casks. Semisecco Marsala is a medium-sweet Sicilian fortified wine. According to the brand, the casks add “sweetness, warmth, and depth,” contributing notes of candied citrus, honeyed fruit, roasted nuts, and gentle spice. The single malt is bottled at 53.7% ABV, non-chill filtered and of natural color. According to the official notes from the brand, the aroma offers “floral overtones with sweet clementine, stoned fruits, honeyed malt, and a hint of grape must and spiced vanilla.” On the palate, the whisky reveals “candied orange peel, sweet pear, toffee, brioche, with subtle hints of walnuts, clove, and cinnamon.” The finish is described as “sweet citrus and rich oak, and a fading memory of festive spice.” The Dalmore said the Series was created to give whisky enthusiasts “a closer view” of the distillery’s whisky-making credentials. The Kentucky based New Riff Distilling has announced the re-release of its award-winning Sherry Finish Malted Rye. New Riff Sherry Finish Malted Rye – 2026 Edition (58.7% ABV) is a six-year-old Kentucky Straight Malted Rye Whiskey, initially matured in American oak barrels before being finished in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks. First introduced in 2022, New Riff Sherry Finish Malted Rye was awarded Double Gold and named a “Best in Class” finalist in the Special-Barrel Finished Whiskey category at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. New Riff Sherry Finish Malted Rye – 2026 Edition is said to open with slowly developed notes of dark fruits, buttery sherry oak and a hint of vanilla, leading to a full-bodied, savoury and sappy mouthfeel, with malty grain and oak undertones. A final burst of brightening spices rounds out the clove, wood spice and fruit-forward finish. Commenting on the launch, Brian Sprance, Master Distiller, said: “We’re not known for barrel finishing, which is exactly why we’re intentional about when and how we do it. Over the years, this release has become one of our favourites because it strikes a balance between something familiar and something unexpected. Bottling it at barrel proof gives the whiskey every opportunity to showcase its full flavour and character. We’re incredibly proud of how this year’s release turned out.” New Riff Sherry Finish Malted Rye – 2026 Edition, will be available from August 28th through selected retailers in the US, for a RRP of $69.99. Maturation takes place in Northern California, where warm days give way to fog-laced cool winds off the Pacific at night. “The Hyperion is an exercise in artistry. Regal, refined, bold. A collaboration of spirit types that fully brings to light the depth and diversity of our barrel inventory,” said Lauren Patz, Master Blender at Redwood Empire Whiskey. “Wheat Whiskey, Bourbon, Rye, and American Single Malt find both balance and transformation and demonstrate what can emerge when curiosity is matched with patience and purpose.” The official tasting notes from the brand describe California walnut and roasted apricots on the nose, followed by a palate of pomegranate molasses, stone fruit, cream, and warm baking spice, with a finish of toffee and toasted malt. This tree is a coastal redwood in Redwood National Park that is recognized as the tallest known living tree at more than 380 feet. It is estimated to be between 600 and 800 years old. Each annual batch will be entirely distinct and never repeated. Bottles are available for pre-order at Redwood Empire’s online shop and in select retailers, including Total Wine & More and Spec’s, throughout the fall.

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Robb Report may receive an affiliate commission. We’ve seen a fair amount of bourbon and rye blends over the years from distilleries and brands like Knob Creek, High West, and Bardstown Bourbon Company. But this new release from the Bay Area’s Redwood Empire distillery brings together bourbon, rye, single malt, and wheat whiskey made from a blend of 10 different mashbills, something that is truly unique in the whiskey world. Redwood Empire is located on Mare Island, a peninsula in the city of Vallejo which lies between San Francisco and Napa. The first Redwood Empire distillery was built in 2015 in the town of Graton in the Russian River Valley, but operations moved to Mare Island a decade later to increase capacity (which is still quite small compared to the big distilleries at just 14 barrels produced per day). Over the years, the distillery has both sourced whiskey from various distilleries that it blends into different expressions as well as distilling its own whiskey on-site. We’ve written favorably about some of those releases, like the introduction of its bottled-in-bond expressions that were made completely in-house in 2022, as well as the Small Lot series that launched in 2024 as a trio of different whiskeys. The new Hyperion Batch 001 is named after the world’s tallest living tree, which is located in California’s Redwood National Park. As mentioned before, this is a blend of four different whiskeys—bourbon, rye, American single malt, and wheat whiskey—aged between seven and 14 years and bottled at 110 proof. While the components were produced from a total of 10 mashbills, the brand lists what it calls a “blend bill,” or a breakdown of the percentages: 32 percent bourbon, 30 percent rye, 25 percent wheat whiskey, and 13 percent single malt. Each came from a batch of 50 to 100 barrels, and the single malt was entirely distilled at Redwood Empire while the other components came from undisclosed distilleries in Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee (a portion of these whiskeys was also distilled in-house). “Exploration has always been central to Redwood Empire, from making whiskey in Northern California to blending across regions, ages, and styles,” said master distiller Jeff Duckhorn in a statement. “The Hyperion asks whiskey drinkers to look beyond the familiar. This first batch celebrates where we began, revealing what has been quietly maturing within our inventory. With each annual release, we invite people to experience whiskey from a different perspective.” Presumably that means that each batch will differ in terms of makeup. While we didn’t get a sample of the inaugural whiskey to try yet, official tasting notes describe aromas of walnut and roasted apricots on the nose, followed by pomegranate molasses, stone fruit, cream, and warm baking spice on the palate, culminating in a long finish of toffee and toasted malt. Redwood Empire the Hyperion Blend of Straight Whiskeys Batch 001 is available now (SRP $99) directly from the distillery and in retail stores and at websites like Total Wine throughout the fall.

Try ‘barrel thieving’ at new Hudsonville distillery HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — A new distillery in downtown Hudsonville offers cocktails, spirits and a unique experience called "barrel thieving." Legacy Winery and Spirits, located below the Terra Station apartments at 5400 School Ave. off of Chicago Drive, is owned by husband-and-wife duo Lance and Anjalie Wassink. Lance has been making wine for more than 13 years and has always been interested in bourbon, he told News 8. The couple decided to "marry" those two concepts and open Legacy, which is currently in its soft opening phase and will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday. West Michigan native realizes dream by opening Hudsonville bakery Because he also spent years in the construction industry, Lance Wassink handled much of Legacy's interior construction, while Anjalie curated the style. The distillery is divided into two sections. One has a "more classic bar look," while the other offers a cozy speakeasy vibe, Anjalie Wassink told News 8. There, you'll find five massive barrels of bourbon. Those barrels aren't just for decoration. Legacy Winery and Spirits offers "barrel thieving," which means customers can taste uncut, unfinished bourbon straight from the barrel. "It's kind of a leisure experience that you can come and sample a barrel and then go enjoy it with your friends," Anjalie Wassink said. "And then you come back up to five times for a half-ounce pour." The five barrels range from 111.4-proof to "hazmat-level proof points," she said. Each barrel is unique, and the offerings will change frequently. "Once they're gone, they're gone for good," Lance Wassink told News 8. "Once the barrel's finished, we'll replace it with another unique barrel that you can try." One Well Brewing launches its own line of spirits You don't need to be an expert to try barrel thieving, he added. You just need to be open-minded. "We are making sure we pick the best stuff that everyone can enjoy. I've seen it where people come up and they don't know if they're going to like it," he said. "And by the end of it, they're drinking 140-proof hazmat level, no problem." "You drink it very leisurely," Anjalie Wassink said. "There's a three-step process, we like to say, where you let it touch your lips, you let it touch your tongue after that, and then you take a small sip and let it coat your tongue and let it savor the flavor." The bourbon can also be bottled, labeled and sealed straight from the barrel. "If you loved any one of these barrels, we will thieve into a bottle for you and you can take that bottle home with you," Lance Wassink said. Inside WOODTV.com: Building West Michigan Advertisement You can find barrel thieving in a few places in the American South, but the Wassinks say they're the first to bring the experience to Michigan. "Having barrels on the floor to sample for the public and to bottle right from a barrel is new to Michigan entirely," Anjalie Wassink said. "And the state actually had to write all new rules and regulations around it to allow us to do that. So we are, in fact, the first ones to bring it here." As the first to offer barrel thieving, the couple has faced some barriers. "It has been the longest process ever," Anjalie Wassink said. "Lance says it best: It's like fitting a square peg into a round hole. Nobody knows what to do with us. So we think we're 90% there and then someone new comes along and said, 'Well, I've never heard of this.' And then we have to go backwards ... but we finally made it." Developer breaks ground on townhomes in high-demand Grand Rapids neighborhood To celebrate, Legacy Winery and Spirits is hosting its grand opening Saturday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. The festivities will include special release bottles, portrait drawings and music played on a piano from the 1800s. On top of that, Croze Nest Cooperage will be building a barrel and charring it on site. "The grand opening is going to be really fun," Anjalie Wassink said. Since its wine license is still pending, Legacy is opening only as a distillery for now. On top of bourbon straight from the barrel, it also offers bourbons that have been finished in wine casks. "Instead of doing what most people do, (which) is throw a bourbon into a wine cask and let it sit there forever and taste like wine, we actually use it just to manipulate flavors," Anjalie Wassink explained. "So for instance, we have a Vidal Blanc finish that we threw into a Vidal Blanc barrel from Michigan Wine Company, actually. And we used it to round out some heat in the mid-palate of the bourbon and really gave it a nice brightness, nice nose. But we still are 100% accentuating the bourbon finish. And it only took 24 hours." Burger spot Black Napkin reopens after temporary closure Legacy also serves cocktails and mocktails — which offer "the whole experience," just like their alcoholic counterparts. "If that glass is smoked and it's for a cocktail, you also get it smoked with a mocktail," Anjalie Wassink said. "I always hated how mocktails, you lose the experience in it. You get a mocktail and you just get, like, a basil leaf and that's it. So ours is (a) full experience." The owners hope they can start serving wine in about a month. They will offer nine wines that are made in house with Michigan-grown grapes. For now, Legacy Winery and Spirits is open 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays.

Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Sky-high alcohol taxes threaten to put Irish pubs out of business - Whisky Monkeys

For many tourists, sipping a pint of Guinness in a genuine Irish pub is as much a part of Ireland as rolling green hills and whiskey. But crushingly high taxes are making life tough for these iconic pubs. Ireland’s drinks industry is sounding the alarm, warning that more and more bars may be forced to shut their doors. New research commissioned by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) shows that Ireland has the second-highest alcohol excise duty in the European Union and the United Kingdom. Only Finland tops Ireland with an even higher tax. For whiskey lovers, the tax is a real sore point. On a 70-centilitre bottle, the Irish government levies a hefty 11.92 euro in excise duty. In Spain it’s just 2.69 euro, and in Germany 3.65 euro. More and more Irish pubs are disappearing According to DIGI, those high taxes have become a serious problem for Ireland’s pub sector. On top of excise duties, pubs are also grappling with rising staff costs, energy prices, insurance, and other operating expenses. As a result, pubs across Ireland are vanishing at a startling pace. One after another is closing due to soaring costs. Since 2005, more than 2,100 pubs have shut down. That works out to roughly one in four. The impact is felt especially hard in rural areas. There, the local pub is far more than a place to order a whiskey- it’s a gathering spot at the heart of the community. Ireland’s drinks sector calls for bold action DIGI is urging the Irish government to cut alcohol excise duties by 10 percent in the upcoming budget. The organization says there’s another strong reason to do so: people in Ireland are drinking significantly less. In 2025, the average Irish adult consumed 9.30 litres of pure alcohol, about 35.6 percent less than at the 2001 peak. That now puts Ireland around the European average. Whether taxes will actually come down remains to be seen. FAQ - How much tax is on a bottle of whiskey in Ireland? On a 70 cl bottle of whiskey, Ireland levies 11.92 euro in alcohol excise duty—placing the country among those with the highest alcohol taxes in Europe. - How does Ireland’s whiskey tax compare with other European countries? The gap is substantial. While Ireland charges 11.92 euro in excise on a 70-centilitre bottle of whiskey, figures show the duty is many times lower in several other European countries. - Why does the Irish drinks sector want to cut alcohol taxes? According to the industry, high excise duties are piling extra pressure on pubs and other hospitality businesses.

It’s time once again to uncover the story behind a whisky name. This week we head to Orkney and Highland Park, where Norse mythology takes center stage. Highland Park Dragon Legend draws on the saga of Sigurd the dragon slayer. Welcome to Whisky Names Explained. The Highland Park distillery is based in Orkney, a place steeped in Norse folklore. Among those tales is the legend of Sigurd the dragon slayer, the inspiration behind Highland Park Dragon Legend single malt whisky. Sigurd’s legend begins with Odin and Loki. Disguised, they traveled through Midgard carrying a trove of gold and more. When they paused to rest at a small dwelling, the gods were robbed by Fafnir and his brothers. Greedy Fafnir refused to share the loot and murdered his siblings. His treachery came at a price: corruption set in, and he transformed into a mighty dragon. All he did thereafter was sleep upon his hoard, unaware that a warrior named Sigurd (also known as Siegfried) had been sent after him by Odin. Sigurd struck the dragon straight through the heart and watched as the beast drew its final breath. When Sigurd later tasted a drop of dragon’s blood from his thumb, he was suddenly gifted with wisdom and foresight. Those qualities echo in the character of Highland Park Dragon Legend—though the whisky won’t tell your future or make you smarter. Highland Park Dragon Legend: A boldly smoky whisky The character of Highland Park Dragon Legend suits Fafnir’s fearsome presence as much as the heroism of Sigurd. This is a whisky with real backbone, befitting the dragon slayer of Norse lore. It’s also intensely smoky, thanks to slow maturation in European oak sherry casks and a generous measure of peated Orkney barley. Highland Park Dragon Legend isn’t a whisky for everyone. Expect aromas of vanilla and winter spices, sun-ripened lemons, sweet heather honey, and of course peat smoke. On the palate it’s full-flavored and powerfully smoky, with notes of pepper, wood, and peat. The finish is long and spicy. Highland Park Dragon Legend is bottled at 70 centiliters and 43.1% ABV. You’ll spot the bottle and packaging by the Norse-style illustration of a horse and Highland Park’s distinctive H. | Whisky Deals from Whisky Exchange | Week 35 | | Glen Moray Forbidden Fruit | 29,58 pounds | | Mortlach 2003 21 year old bourbon cask signatory | 158,33 pounds (save 55 pounds) | | Redbreast 18 year old | 112,50 pounds (save 40 pounds) | | Red Sport 1991 31 year old Marsala cask | 537,50 pounds (save 300 pounds) | | Suntory Tsukuriwake Cask Collection 2024 | 2395,83 pounds (save 800 pounds) | FAQ - What inspired the name Highland Park Dragon Legend? Shawbrook backs Glasgow Distillery Company with £11m inventory-backed funding facility The inventory-backed asset based lending facility refinanced existing debt and released working capital for growth. Shawbrook has provided Glasgow Distillery Company with an £11m inventory-backed asset based lending facility to refinance existing debt and release working capital for growth. As the company invested in expanding its whisky portfolio, it needed a funding structure suited to the long-term nature of whisky production. Shawbrook structured the facility against eligible maturing Scotch whisky inventory. The funding refinanced previous arrangements and creates room for further investment and future growth. Noble & Company introduced the transaction and Addleshaw Goddard provided legal support. Mike Hayward, co-founder of Glasgow Distillery Company, said: “As an independent distiller, significant value is created long before every bottle reaches the shelf. “Shawbrook understood our business model and the characteristics of whisky maturation, structuring a facility that unlocks working capital and enables us to invest in production, expand our inventory and continue delivering exceptional spirits to customers around the world.” Jeremy Bolton, senior director, asset based lending at Shawbrook, said: “Glasgow Distillery Company has built a distinctive position within Scotland’s premium spirits sector. “By taking the time to understand both the business and the value of its maturing whisky inventory, we were able to structure a funding solution that provides flexibility today while supporting its long-term growth strategy.”

Whisky Advocate / Whisky Magazine(經 Google News)|原題:How NASCAR star Ryan Blaney bridged a legendary family legacy with the craft of fine bourbon - Whisky Magazine

Whisky has always possessed a special ability to draw people closer. It is a brilliant catalyst for conversation, bringing people together that might not ordinarily have common ground, while also providing the perfect vessel for heritage. For NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney, the inception of his signature label, Ten Runner Bourbon, stemmed from conversations in the most natural environment possible: sitting around a table with good friends, enjoying exceptional spirits, and dreaming of creating something truly personal. “I always enjoyed bourbon… and it just kind of kind of grew from there,” Blaney recalls of those early days. “We got serious about it, and it was probably a two-year process from the first time we talked about it to actual, you know, product… And fortunately, you know, myself and Tony [Caponigro of the Sports Management Network] and a couple other guys were a part of it. We were all really on board with wanting to do it, so it was just kind of a roundtable discussion, and it grew from there.” That patient approach was entirely deliberate. “We just didn’t want to push it out, you know, six months after we thought about it,” Blaney explains. “We wanted to do it the right way with good people… do our homework and research of what we want to put out there. We didn’t want to put anything out there that we weren’t proud of, so we definitely took the time to do it right. So I’m happy we did it that way.” His colleague, Caponigro, echoes this dedication to the learning curve. “So what we know in our business is you got to have experts around you, and you have to have good people. And the more we, as Ryan said, just kind of started learning more and more… it took two years. Because we didn’t set out to be like, okay, let’s launch a whiskey tomorrow. It was kind of more of a learning exercise, and we’re like, maybe we can find something here. Maybe we can do something. You know, Ryan’s passion lies in the craftsmanship and the creation and the design and all those elements. So it was kind of fun to be able to do that. But I guess on the operations side, we had to go find people that could help lead us in the right direction.” To understand Ten Runner and where it came from, it is important to understand the Blaney lineage. The name itself is a masterclass in personal history. “Ten is a Blaney family number,” Ryan explains. “My grandfather Lou started the family in racing in the late 1950s in the number 10, and it stuck. My dad raced it, and I raced it growing up. It’s our family number.” The name also captures the spirit of the gatherings that inspired it. “A big part of the story is when we thought about okay, what’s the best way to enjoy bourbon? It’s, well, with your friends and it’s with your family and stuff like that, kind of all gathered around,” Blaney shares. “My family had such a big, you know, long history in the motorsport side that I really wanted to be a big family-oriented kind of thing. So that’s why we kind of came up with the name, the Ten Runner name.” As for the “Runner” portion of the moniker, it’s a nod to the legendary, high-octane history of the sport. Long before modern superspeedways existed, the foundations of NASCAR were built by bootleggers during and after Prohibition. These “whiskey runners” modified their everyday cars to outrun the law, eventually racing one another to see who had the fastest machine. “The runner is an homage to those origins,” Blaney notes. “They created a path for what I’m doing today in NASCAR.” Anyone that has been involved in some way with whiskey will be aware that developing a premium whiskey is a notoriously rigorous exercise in patience and precision, involving a lot of trial processes. For Blaney and his team, finding the exact flavour profile required serious dedication in the tasting room. “We went through a ton of different blends to get where we ended up,” he admits. “We probably went through, I don’t know… 20 to 30 different samples through that time until we finally kind of all agreed, like, ‘All right, this is what we want. We all agree on this one.’ So that was a fun time.” Achieving that consensus required some brilliant blending behind the scenes. Caponigro explains the technical magic that gives Ten Runner its unique footprint; it is created using a unique blend of two different mash bills from two very different distilleries. “We’re non-producing, and so they’re two different aged barrels from two different places, and so... it’s complex in its nature. When you put it up against other bottles or other styles of bottle, it opens up and you’re like, ‘Oh, well, there’s something different about this one in a good way.'" When asked about the defining step in crafting Ten Runner, Blaney doesn’t point to any one single technical aspect of the process. Instead, the ultimate realisation of that hard work came in a single, visceral moment. “I think popping it open for the first time was a huge step. Like, this is actually real.” At 103 proof, Ten Runner is unapologetically bold. This high-octane profile was a personal mission for Blaney. “I’ve always been a fan of higher proof whiskeys. You know, over in the triple digits, and that’s just what I enjoy,” he says. “And it’s not for everybody, so it’s like, ‘All right, do we want to go 103 proof? Because this might be a little bit too much for people.’ But... we got it to where it’s still the high proof, but it’s pretty smooth for the proof that it is.” “For someone experiencing Ten Runner for the very first time, how would I break it down? I think it’s damn smooth for being 103,” Blaney says with a grin. “So I think it’d surprise people.” It has the power to satisfy seasoned whiskey connoisseurs while remaining remarkably approachable. Ultimately, Ten Runner is about more than what is inside the bottle. It is about the connections made while sharing it. “Whiskey always brings people together,” Blaney says. “I want to help spur that on for other people.” Whether celebrating a victory or winding down after a long week, Ten Runner is crafted to be at the centre of those unforgettable moments.

Although his preference lies with whiskey and whiskey-based cocktails, he has a profound appreciation for all unique and unconventional liquors, from Malört to Ojen - if it's peculiar, he's intrigued. Is Shortbarrel’s Sapsquatch a syrupy maple bomb or something more balanced? We taste this Atlanta bourbon finished in maple syrup barrels to find out. We all have whiskies that we always keep in the house, but what are the bottles you constantly replace because they’re so good at what they do? Crown Royal x Juicy Couture Drop Limited Edition Y2K-Inspired Merch READ THE STORYMy selection of the best house whiskies varies, and I’m not expecting everyone to agree. But these are permanent bottles in my house that will always be opened, shared, and enjoyed straight away. Some of them may not be a surprise if you’ve read a lot of my work, but they’re all here for a reason. Wild Turkey 101 This one isn’t a surprise. I’ve literally just picked up two more bottles for cocktails and neat pours at a party that we’ve got coming up. I’ve always waxed lyrical about this permanent shelf bottle. It just does everything and isn’t going to break your wallet in half for the enjoyment of it. Bottled at a stunning 50.5% ABV, it’s an every-occasion bottle that can be used for an evening cocktail, a neat pour at the end of the day, or handed out at a gathering to people looking for something with a bit of punch after a great meal. It’s loaded with rich caramel, stroopwafels, sweet tobacco, and earthy rye spices that linger forever on the palate. Signup now to make sure you don't miss out on the latest whiskey news and deals. This is an incredible bottle for anyone who wants to dive into bourbon, has an appreciation for higher-ABV spirits, or simply wants an incredible bargain for what’s in the bottle. A Clynelish of Some Sort I do apologize for the vagueness here, but I always end up buying a different version every time the old one runs out. That’s my fault, as I tend to pick up single casks or very small batch releases. I’ve just purchased the Chorlton Whisky Clynelish 10 Year Old for £64 and the newest Thompson Bros Clynelish 8 Year Old for £45. They’re both quite different. The Chorlton release is richer and thicker at just under 60% ABV, but still has those waxy, tropical fruit notes. The Thompson Bros release is light and crisp, perfect for this third heatwave the UK is going through. It’s such a great distillery, and the way independent bottlers are releasing its whisky has always had a place in my heart. More and more of it is becoming available, with some older releases on the horizon for 2026 from Chorlton Whiskies. It’s a must-have in my house and something that hits just right in the sunshine. Clynelish bottlings, even the regular release, offer drinkers a unique look at a rather special style of single malt whisky, often described as waxy and loaded with fruitiness. Benromach 15 Year Old This is easily the most expensive bottle that I constantly replace, probably about four times a year. Even before becoming a Benromach Champion in 2025, this bottle still meant so much to me. It delivers so much flavor at 43% ABV and has everything going for it. It’s a lightly peated Speyside single malt that spends all of its time in first-fill ex-bourbon and first-fill ex-sherry casks. The smoke is delicate but present. You get it, but it isn’t one of those massively phenolic, iodine-driven styles of smoke. It’s sweeter and more like maple-style BBQ, and when you mix that with first-fill bourbon and sherry casks, you’ve got a lot of flavor to mull over. You don’t have to be a whisky expert to enjoy this. It’s a wonderful, complex, and decadent bottle of whisky that can offer so much to everyone. It’s also an incredible way to get into peated whisky, a genuine gateway bottle with a solid age statement, made by an excellent distillery. Glen Garioch 12 Year Old You could argue that this one is the most obscure. Glen Garioch, pronounced “Geary,” is an old-school, rich, full-bodied single malt that can give you a serious taste of a distinct Highland style. The 12 Year Old is a milk chocolate and maple spice-driven whisky with so much to showcase. Matured in ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 48% ABV, it can occasionally be found for just under £50, making it quite the value-for-money bottle. Everyone talks about Glen Garioch in the past tense. It used to be peated, they used to use coal-fired stills, and that’s all relevant and interesting. But the spirit they produce today is still excellent and has real weight to it. It’s rounded and complex, even as new make spirit. Notes of biscuit, milk chocolate, cupboard spices, maple syrup, charred oak, and ginger mean it’s just got it all. This is a real experience bottle, and I offer it to anyone who wants to find something a little more unusual and under the radar compared with the bgger names in Scottish whisky. Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 I’m unapologetic about this. I’ll never understand the hate that Jack Daniel’s gets from “serious whiskey fans.” I personally believe that it’s one of the most consistent whiskeys on the planet, and it’s available in just about every country. Yes, it’s chill-filtered, but it’s also all natural color, unlike some of the best-selling Scottish whiskies in the world. When I pick up a bottle of this, I know exactly what I’m getting: a tasty, affordable, historically important, and widely available bottle of whiskey. Whether I choose to drink it at home or in Taiwan, I know it’s going to taste exactly the same. As a result, I’ve got a lot of personal nostalgia and memories attached to this bottle. I put it into blind tastings all the time, and nobody ever guesses that it’s Jack. They still end up enjoying it, so there’s that. You can be at any stage of your whiskey journey and pour a glass of this neat or mix it and fully enjoy those peanut, caramel, and sweet banana notes that the brand has become so famous for. The Best Whiskies Are Often the Ones You Actually Replace Old and expensive whiskies are really fun to try. The stories behind some of them and the things you can taste can be truly different. However, the “best” whiskies can’t really be something we all agree on. There are simply too many bottles and too many opinions about what’s best. The bottle you buy most often and replace the most, though, is clearly one you enjoy. It’s the one you pour for yourself and for anyone else who is interested in enjoying it or trying it for the first time. Take a good look at your whisky collection. We’ve all got our special bottles in there, things we love and would struggle to replace. But what do you always buy more of?
