Spirit Of The Week: Bulleit 20-Year-Old Straight Rye Whiskey
After helping forge the rye boom, Bulleit bottles its oldest and rarest whiskey ever.
Way before bourbon claimed America’s whiskey soul, rye held that heavyweight deed. As the grain shaped the country’s earliest distilling traditions, rye whiskey was distilled by farmers from Pennsylvania to Maryland, becoming the chosen spirit poured across colonial taverns—and has outlasted every other style in continuous American production. That dominance slowly eroded through the 20th century, hastened by Prohibition’s disruption of distilling infrastructure and a postwar market that suddenly gravitated toward bourbon’s sweeter, corn-forward profile. By the late 20th century rye had shrunk to a niche category, barely kept alive by a handful of legacy labels like Wild Turkey, Old Overholt, Rittenhouse and Sazerac who deserve credit for remaining staunch in their support.
Rye whiskey’s revival is truly a 21st-century story, however, and Bulleit played an outsized role. The brand’s dedication to rye was already well established by its founding expression: a High-Rye Bourbon (68-percent corn, 28-percent rye, and 4-percent malted barley mash bill) based on a family recipe that founder Tom Bulleit began distilling in 1987. So releasing a true Rye whiskey seemed like a natural next step. When Bulleit released its first Rye in 2011, its soon-to-be-famous 95-percent rye / 5-percent malted barley mash bill was reportedly chosen to address the direct request of bartenders who wanted more spice and structure in their cocktails. The gamble helped pull rye back into the cultural conversation just as the broader American whiskey boom took hold; Bulleit soon became one of America’s best-selling rye whiskeys.
Now Bulleit releases its oldest expression to date: a cask-strength bottling of its signature 95/5 rye mash bill, distilled in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and matured two full decades in Kentucky warehouses. Whiskeys this old at this mash bill are genuinely rare—the category’s benchmark remains Heaven Hill’s venerable Rye staple, Rittenhouse. Its Very Rare series, single-barrel 21-, 23-, and 25-year ryes released between 2006 and 2009, are among the rare exceptions in the ultra-aged Rye world since aggressive rye mash bills tend to peak earlier, and risk turning overly woody long before reaching decades in barrel.
“With a rye this mature, the challenge is finding barrels where age adds depth without overwhelming the grain,” Nicole Austin explains of the project’s difficulties. “We wanted the spice and structure that define Bulleit Rye to stay front and center, while allowing twenty years of maturation to reveal new layers of complexity. The final whiskey has the spice people expect from Bulleit, with a depth that could only come from time.”
As Director of American Whiskey Liquid Development and Capabilities for spirits powerhouse Diageo, it fell on Austin’s shoulders to blend the two-decade old barrels—a responsibility she took great joy in. “Blending is my favorite part of my job, by far. It’s the part that feels truly artful,” Austin tells Maxim. “For this project, I found this lovely rye and it seemed natural that it should be for Bulleit, with their history of leadership in the category.”
Adding depth without overwhelming the grain was the overarching goal. In other words preserving Bulleit’s signature bite while letting time build complexity. The result, she noted, didn’t taste tired or over-oaked, retaining “energy and lift” despite its advanced age. So bottling it at cask strength (68.5-percent ABV, or 137 proof) was paramount in preserving that singular profile, leading to a rye whiskey with a truly incredible combination of rye character and rich clove-forward spice, yet abundantly bright, smooth, layered and complex. This 20-Year-Old Straight Rye performs the rare magic trick of amplifying Bulleit’s famed 95/5 mash bill to previously unseen levels, while polishing any rough edges or over-oaked tannins. In a world where large aging numbers are often mistaken for quality, you’d be forgiven for assuming this was just a marketing exercise. Fret not, Bulleit 20-Year-Old Straight Rye delivers.
“I am deeply proud of this whiskey, and I also can’t wait to show you what is next!” Austin concludes. She then seems to reveal the urgency of this particular expression, and how that speed may have actually eased the pressure of such a landmark release for Bulleit. “I think I was lucky that we had to move so fast to release this that I didn’t have time to think about what a massive deal it was. I will probably be much more worried about the next one.” Limited to 1,776 individually numbered bottles, Bulleit 20-Year-Old Straight Rye Whiskey is hitting shelves this month at $299 SRP.

Whisky cask investment in Britain is still operating outside financial regulation, even after a new advertising ruling, a major company collapse and an active police investigation into parts of the trade. For buyers, that means the main burden of checking whether a cask exists, where it is stored and who owns it still falls on them, not on a financial regulator.
The latest warning came on July 8, when the Advertising Standards Authority ruled against Capgroup Int Ltd and upheld four complaints about the company’s marketing. The authority said the company’s website made misleading claims about online reviews, used media logos in a misleading way and did not clearly tell consumers that whisky cask and physical gold investments are not regulated in the United Kingdom. The ruling also said the company failed to make clear that buyers would not have protection from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme or the Financial Ombudsman Service if something went wrong.
Capgroup Int remains an active registered company, according to Companies House, and no insolvency action has been recorded against it. But the company’s earlier trading names add another layer of difficulty for buyers trying to research its record. It previously traded as London Cask Company, then as Caskcap Ltd, before adopting the name Capgroup Int Ltd in 2025. Name changes do not prove wrongdoing, but they can make it harder for a buyer to find earlier complaints or rulings unless they know exactly what to search.
The broader problem is legal as much as commercial. In Britain, a whisky cask is treated as a physical asset, not as a financial product like a stock, fund or bond. That means firms selling casks do not need authorization from the Financial Conduct Authority simply because they are offering barrels for sale as investments. The sales pitch may sound financial, but the underlying asset is still a warehouse-stored cask of spirit. As a result, there is no routine financial supervision of the sector, no ombudsman route for most disputes and no compensation scheme if a company fails or if a buyer is misled.
That gap has become harder to ignore since the collapse last year of Whisky Merchants Trading Ltd, the Edinburgh-based parent of Cask 88 and Braeburn Whisky. The company, once valued at more than $80 million, entered insolvency in May 2025 and laid off its staff. There were no fraud allegations tied to that collapse. Even so, the case showed that a sizable and well-known operator in the cask market could fail outright, leaving owners to sort out what became of their holdings without the protections customers might expect in a regulated financial business.
A more severe example came from Cask Whisky Ltd. The High Court ordered the company wound up on October 8, 2024, and the Official Receiver was appointed as liquidator. In a notice published by the Insolvency Service, the Official Receiver said Cask Whisky Ltd was not the owner of the whisky held in warehouses and did not hold any interest in it. That finding cut to the center of the market’s biggest fear: that a company may sell a cask it does not actually own. The Insolvency Service later published details of the bonded warehouses involved so cask holders could contact them directly.
The City of London Police is separately investigating Cask Whisky Ltd, Cask Spirits Global Ltd and Whisky Scotland. As of late August, that investigation remained open and no criminal charges connected to the cask-investment allegations had been announced. Reporting by the BBC linked Cask Whisky Ltd to Craig Brooks, a disqualified company director who previously served a prison sentence in an unrelated fraud case involving carbon credits and rare earth metals. The BBC also reported that Brooks used aliases and that a relative was listed in company paperwork instead of him. Those details do not establish the outcome of the current cask-related investigation, but they have added to concern about how easily opaque ownership and control can operate in a market with little formal oversight.
Individual complaints have also pointed to a more common problem than outright fraud: buyers who struggle to get basic confirmation about their casks or to sell them when they want to exit. That does not mean every delay or poor response is evidence of misconduct. But it does show how exposed buyers can be when the main proof they hold is a seller-issued certificate of ownership. On its own, that document does not independently prove that a cask exists, that it is being stored where the seller says it is, or that it has not already been sold to someone else.
Lawyers, insolvency specialists and experienced brokers have long said the most important check is direct confirmation from the bonded warehouse, if the warehouse is willing to provide it. Buyers can also search Companies House records for earlier trading names, compare directors across related businesses and treat promised returns with caution. The advertising authority has repeatedly taken issue with specific or guaranteed performance claims in this market. A company that openly states, without being prompted, that cask investment is unregulated is offering a more transparent starting point than one that hides that fact in the small print.
The issue matters well beyond a niche group of collectors and speculators. Whisky has become one of the beverage industry’s most active areas for private cask sales, broker-led ownership programs and other products that sit between collecting and investing. When rules are light and disclosures are weak, the risk does not stop with a single buyer. It can spill into brand reputation, distributor relationships and compliance standards for distilleries, merchants and brokers. That pressure could spread to adjacent parts of the drinks business, including wine and other spirits, where rare bottles, futures and barrel programs can also be marketed with an investment angle.
For overseas buyers, especially in Asia-Pacific markets, the practical risks are often greater. British agencies such as the Advertising Standards Authority, Action Fraud and the City of London Police can act within their own jurisdiction, but recovering money or pressing a complaint from abroad is harder. International buyers may face slower communication, added legal costs and fewer practical ways to push a nonresponsive seller. In a market with no financial safety net, distance can make a bad situation worse.
For anyone who already owns a cask and suspects a problem, the immediate advice is basic but important: keep a written record of every communication, ask the bonded warehouse for confirmation directly and separate ordinary customer-service disputes from signs of possible deception. If fraud is suspected, the reporting route in Britain is Action Fraud, which works with the City of London Police. Insolvency cases have also shown that if a cask is genuinely held in bond, the collapse of the selling company does not automatically erase the buyer’s ownership claim. But proving that ownership can be difficult, and in Britain’s cask investment market, that proof still depends far more on the buyer’s own diligence than on any regulator’s review.

Gleneagles and Glendronach Are Dropping a 14-Year-Old Single Malt Whisky
If you're going to stay at a luxury resort in the Scottish Highlands, you might as well drink a whisky that matches the experience. And now you can, because the Gleneagles resort and hotel just announced a new partnership with the Glendronach distillery, and you have a chance to purchase a bottle of the first whisky collaboration now.
Gleneagles, which is located in Perthshire, opened more than a century ago in 1924. Today it operates as a high-end, five-star resort that offers many outdoor activities, including falconry, shooting, fishing, hiking, and off-road driving. The hotel, which has been featured on the World's 50 Best Hotels list, is also known for its expansive golf courses and luxury wellness centers. The Glendronach has been around for even longer, making whisky in one form or another for about 200 years. The distillery is known for its sherry cask-matured whisky, most of which is aged in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso barrels, releasing expressions that rival or even surpass the likes of the Macallan in many cases.
More from Robb Report
The new whisky series is called Moments from The Glorious Playground, a reference to the nickname for the area surrounding Gleneagles. It kicks off with the first of three expressions that are being bottled exclusively for Gleneagles and will be available to purchase there starting September 1. The first expression, A Moment of Reflection, which was created by master blender Rachel Barrie, is a 14-year-old single malt that was aged in Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 46 percent ABV. We did not get to sample the whisky, but the official tasting notes describe it as being "full-bodied and creamy," with notes of honeyed caramel, chocolate malt, cinnamon, nutmeg, sultana, and hazelnut on the palate.
"Gleneagles and the Glendronach share a belief that the most memorable luxury experiences are defined by craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a strong sense of place," said Adip Agrawal, VP global brand director malts and Irish at Brown-Forman, in a statement. "This collaboration brings those values together beautifully, pairing Gleneagles' exceptional hospitality with the Glendronach's mastery of sherry cask maturation. The result is a whisky that captures the character of the setting and the rituals that make it so special."
Two more single malt whiskies will follow over the next two years: A Moment of Reunion in 2027 and A Moment of Celebration in 2028 (details will be revealed when they are released). 100 bottles of the first release are available to purchase now via an online ballot (SRP £160 or about $218)—you can register here, and winners will be announced on September 1.

As Canada and the US urgently seek to resolve a tariff spat, the answer could lie in Kentucky bourbon, whisky and Californian wine.
Some Canadian provinces have banned the sale of the US drinks, putting the focus in the talks squarely on alcohol.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is urging the provinces to allow the products back onto store shelves in order to reach an agreement with the US, according to two provincial government leaders.
The dispute dates back to July when US President Donald Trump announced new 50% tariffs on a range of products, which were due to come into force on Wednesday.
But Trump postponed the tariffs just before the deadline expired and negotiators have since been holding urgent talks. Their discussions span steel, aluminium and dairy products as well as alcohol, Canadian media reports have said.
US alcohol exports slump by $600 million
In 2025, several provinces removed US-made drinks from the shelves of state-run outlets in response to tariffs imposed by Trump. Canadian imports tanked by 81% - a drop of nearly $600 million - between March 2025 and February 2026, according to the White House.
Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette said lifting the sales ban was a possibility in her province, though she added that the impact of the new trade conditions on Quebec would first need to be assessed. Quebec has a significant dairy industry.
A further question is whether Canadians will actually buy US-produced drinks if they do return to the shops. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said if US booze returns to shelves, people should "leave it there," in comments on Thursday.
Canadian whisky producer Bearface has launched its own Southern-style spirit to step into the void left by American products. Bear-bon is a recent addition to the line that takes its cue from the corn-centric and charred barrel recipe that contributes to Bourbon’s rich and sweet character.
Master blender Andrés Faustinelli created his new label by blending whiskies made from corn, rye and barley and re-conditioned barrels. The distillery worked with a Quebec cooperage to re-toast the used wine and whisky barrels so they would impart additional flavour to the finished whisky. This involved removing the barrel heads and scorching their insides with fire to caramelize the wood sugars and create a layer of charcoal.
Opinion: Canada, it may come back to the shelves, but do not buy the U.S. booze
The success of the initial release, which was sold exclusively in British Columbia, inspired an increase in Bear-bon’s production. The new label will be introduced to LCBO outlets next month, with national availability planned before the holiday season.
Bear-bon is recommended this week, with an innovative gin and a refreshing and flavourful ready-to-serve margarita.
Another Hendrick’s Gin (United Kingdom), $53.70
While the playful name, Another Hendrick’s Gin doesn’t emphasize the significance of the brand’s first permanent edition in nine years, it does reflect the unconventional nature of spirit, which layers cocoa bean and orange blossom with the telltale cucumber-and-rose scent of the Scottish distillery’s gin. Gin with chocolate notes is unusual, but the cocoa in this instance is subtle and balanced, and adds another layer to the peppery and herbal notes, with a surprisingly oily texture. Shaken and served as a martini, the chocolate element really stands out, which would add more intensity to a ‘ginspresso martini.’ I found it more enjoyable when mixed in a Negroni or as a richer style gin and tonic. This has 44 per cent ABV. Available at the above price in Ontario, $55.99 in British Columbia, $50.95 in Manitoba.
Bearface Bear-bon Charred Barrel Whisky (Canada), $44.99
Bearface’s new full-bodied, Southern-style whisky is made from a blend of sweet corn, rye and barley whiskies, which have been distilled and aged independently before blending. The Bear-bon blend sees extended aging in charred oak barrels, which have been scorched to order by a Quebec cooperage. This process creates cracks in the wood that allow the spirit to sink deeper into the staves, resulting in a richer taste. Like its American namesake, Bear-bon offers a familiar corn sweetness and oak-derived mix of vanilla and caramel notes as part of its soft character. This has 45.2 per cent ABV. Available at the above price in British Columbia, various prices in Alberta.
Civil Pours Jalapeño Margarita (Canada), $34.95
Toronto-based Civil Pours creates bartender-quality cocktails that are available in bottle or on draught for restaurant partners, such as Cactus Club and King Taps. The portfolio has expanded from a classic Old Fashioned to a cheers-worthy daiquiri, gimlet and espresso martini. The flavourful Jalapeño Margarita, created by using a chili-pepper distillate that offers the star ingredient’s herbaceous notes without the heat, is part of their growing range at LCBO outlets. This has 17 per cent ABV. Available at the above price in Ontario or direct, civilpours.com

Koopers Whiskey finishes Bourbon in Texas oak
Family-owned blending house Koopers Whiskey has unveiled an eight-year-old limited edition Bourbon finished in Texas-grown white oak barrels.
Described as a first-of-its-kind release for the producer, Koopers Whiskey Texas Oak Bourbon is an eight-year-old whiskey initially aged in traditional American white oak and finished in toasted Texas-grown white oak casks.
Standard Cooperage, located in Blanco, Texas, the state’s ‘first’ cooperage, produced the white oak finishing barrels.
The casks are said to impart rich aromatics, cinnamon spice, pecan notes, and a more layered, textural finish to the whiskey.
The spirit, made with a mashbill of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley, was sourced from MGP Ingredients’ Indiana distillery.
Bottled at a barrel proof of 57.4% ABV, this Bourbon showcases aromas of toasted caramel, Texas pecans, maple syrup, orange peel, and dark cherries. On the palate, it offers flavours reminiscent of baked apples and stone fruits, layered with maple syrup, cinnamon, brown sugar, and crème brûlée.
Troy Kooper, master blender at Koopers Whiskey, said: “Texas Oak Bourbon was conceived as a showcase for oak, not as an afterthought to the whiskey. We selected barrels of mature eight-year-old Bourbon with a strong sense of identity, including a solid core of sweetness, structure, and grain character that we wanted.
“We transferred the Bourbon into toasted Texas-grown white oak casks to amplify what was already working and to add a distinctly local voice. Our goal was to find the point where traditional American oak and Texas-grown oak complement rather than compete with each other.
“The final blend is expressive but not overwhelming, assertive without becoming harsh, and unmistakably shaped by the place where it was finished.”
Limited to 360 bottles, the Bourbon will be available from 22 August on Koopers Whiskey’s website and tasting room in Ledbetter, Texas, with an SRP of US$70.
Presale orders are anticipated to start shipping around 1 September.
Koopers Whiskey, originally known as the Kooper Family Whiskey Company, was founded in 2012 by husband-and-wife team Troy and Michelle Kooper in Austin, Texas.

Since its founding in 2013, Redwood Empire has become one of California’s most recognizable whiskey brands. Its early reputation was built on sourced and blended whiskeys; more recently, the distillery has begun incorporating more of its own aged distillate into various products. Its newest release—dubbed “Hyperion” or technically “The Hyperion”—is something of a halfway point between the two, marrying highly-aged whiskeys from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana with a heaping helping of Redwood’s in-house whiskey.
At face value, the four-part release is ambitious, combining bourbon, rye, wheat whiskey, and American single malt. Fortunately, Redwood Empire’s team seemed more than up to the task. I got an early taste of Hyperion, and to my palate, it’s a full-bodied and complex whiskey that doesn’t sacrifice composure for punch.
My full tasting notes are below. But first, let’s dive in on the specs for Hyperion, the inaugural release (Batch 001) in a new, annual, and limited-edition series showcasing the best of what Redwood Empire has in stock.
- 32% of the blend is bourbon whiskey
- 30% of the blend is rye whiskey
- 25% of the blend is wheat whiskey
- 13% of the blend is single malt whiskey (this component was entirely distilled by Redwood Empire)
Fittingly for the brand, the release was named for Hyperion, a 380-foot tall Northern California coast redwood believed to be the world’s tallest living tree.
To construct the blend, Redwood’s Jeff Duckhorn (Master Distiller) and Lauren Patz (Master Blender) selected straight whiskeys from between 50 and 100 total barrels. The final blend features components from across “more than 10 mash bills,” each aged between 7 and 14 years. (Duckhorn tells Forbes the oldest whiskey in the blend was Indiana bourbon.) All whiskeys were aged in #3 char barrels, with barrel entry proofs ranging between 110 and 120.
According to Patz, each of the four spirit types features whiskeys mashed, fermented, and distilled by Redwood Empire, in addition to sourced whiskeys. A full 100% of the American single malt came from Redwood’s in-house production.
After numerous tests, the final product was blended to 110 proof before bottling.
“[A]t first we were leaning towards cask strength but found that the addition of a little water helped marry the four spirit types together,” Patz tells Forbes. “We also did a slow proof process of incremental step downs and allowed for several months of tank attenuation.”
So what does Hyperion (the whiskey, not the tree!) taste like?
The nose kicks off with loads of dried orchard fruit: apricots, figs, red plums, and white peaches. That fruity medley is both tart and sweet, followed by growing waves of baking spice, cardamom, and toasted oak. Aromas grow more tannic with time as the fruit recedes into the background—except for apricot, which remains pronounced throughout. Those sweet/tart scents transition from fruit to wood-forward, reminiscent of a little rickhouse funk as the blend lets its oldest components take over.
On the palate, first sips are remarkably soft and approachable, and Hyperion drinks a touch below its 110 proof. Fruit once again leads, though a little more sour than sweet here, big on both tart cherry juice and huckleberries. Smoked, spiced maple syrup and vanilla bean dominate the midpalate before cinnamon builds and lends its own heat to the ethanol. Chocolate-covered espresso beans bridge the back palate and finish, and lingering flavors include cherry syrup, black tea, and some very dark malt.
Overall, Hyperion is mighty flavorful, but it doesn’t rely on proof or linear punch to do the talking. Instead, it doesn’t rush things, instead building its case—and flavor profile—over time. The result is an identifiable narrative, one that left me focused less on the blend particulars and more concerned with sitting back to enjoy the ride.
Redwood Empire’s Hyperion Batch 001 is a limited edition bottling, and Duckhorn says the total release size clocks in around 12,000 bottles. It will be available both online and in various retailers starting in late August 2026. Each 750mL bottle carries a suggested retail price of $99.

The bourbon is made from 16-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon barrels sourced from Wild Turkey’s Camp Nelson rickhouses. It is bottled at 120 proof.
According to the official notes from the brand, the bourbon delivers “rich notes of dark fruit, mature oak, cherry cola, clove and Wild Turkey’s signature character.”
The bottle is housed in a premium canister featuring an autumn hunting scene and gold foil detailing. The design references the original release and Wild Turkey’s hunting heritage.
Only 4,161 bottles have been produced. Australian availability began on 20 August, with a recommended retail price of AUD $499.
Russell’s Australian tour includes meet-and-greet events in Melbourne on 30 August, Brisbane on 3 September and Sydney on 6 September. A VIP event in Sydney on 4 September is available to competition winners only.

The Loch Lomond 50-Year-Old was distilled using the distillery’s distinctive Straight Neck Stills. It was matured for half a century in first-fill Bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks.
Each of the 100 bottles is individually numbered.
“We have been delighted by the response to The Golden Ticket and the generosity shown by golf fans across both The Open and AIG Women’s Open,” said Andrew Jack, group marketing director at Loch Lomond Group. “Selling 1,423 tickets and raising £14,230 for The R&A Foundation is a fantastic result and demonstrates what can be achieved when we bring together our passion for whisky with our long-standing commitment to golf.”

He continued: “We’re incredibly proud that the funds raised will support The R&A Foundation’s important work, helping to create opportunities and make a lasting difference through golf.”
The campaign builds on Loch Lomond Whiskies’ partnership with The R&A. The brand serves as the official spirit of The Open, one of golf’s four major championships and the oldest of the sport’s majors, first played in 1860.
Winners were selected using an independent third-party random draw platform to ensure fairness and transparency.

Glenfiddich and Aston Martin Formula One Team have announced the launch of their latest limited-edition release, which is said to celebrate the invisible craft, meticulous refinement and human endeavour at the heart of the Speyside-based distillery.
Glenfiddich & Aston Martin Formula One Team 16 Year Old – Release No. 2 (43% ABV) is a single malt Scotch whisky, that has undergone a five-cask maturation, combining first-fill Bourbon barrels, Port pipes, Oloroso Sherry casks, wine casks and a final touch of Fino Sherry butts.
Marking the second year of the partnership, the latest release was inspired by Glenfiddich Malt Master Brian Kinsman and Aston Martin Formula One Team Managing Technical Partner Adrian Newey, and their shared belief that exceptional performance is defined not only by what can be seen, but by the invisible detail working beneath the surface.
Brian Kinsman designs a whisky that will not be ready for years; Adrian Newey shapes airflow around a car that does not yet exist. Different crafts, different materials, yet the same mindset: an instinct for what lies ahead and a discipline built on precision, curiosity and foresight. It is this shared pursuit that sits at the heart of the collaboration – two brands committed to going beyond the expected through mastery of the unseen.
From Brian Kinsman’s ability to select, balance and marry whiskies from Glenfiddich’s unrivalled reserve to the generations of expertise behind every stage of maturation, these releases are shaped by the unseen craft that transforms patience into character. The result is a whisky that captures Glenfiddich’s enduring drive to go beyond.
Glenfiddich & Aston Martin Formula One Team 16 Year Old – Release No. 2, is described as delivering notes of rich stewed fruits, floral top notes, hints of marzipan and polished leather on the nose, followed by creamy, buttery toffee, caramelised cane sugar and dry oak tannin on the palate.
Commenting on the launch, Brian Kinsman, said: “What I find most compelling about Adrian’s work is that the defining performance often comes from what you cannot immediately see. Behind every Aston Martin Formula One™ Team car are hundreds of small decisions, carefully refined to create a seamless whole. The same is true in whisky making. For this expression, I combined the influence of five distinct cask types, each contributing its own character, texture and depth. The art lies not in the individual components, but in bringing them together in a way that feels perfectly balanced and instinctively right. The result is a truly unique Glenfiddich expression, vibrant with fruit, layered with warmth, and brought into perfect balance.”
Glenfiddich & Aston Martin Formula One Team 16 Year Old – Release No. 2, is now available from selected specialist retailers, for a RRP of £75.00.

Whiskies come in all shapes and sizes. A whisky lover’s journey of discovery never truly ends, but some classics always stay with you.
Oban 14 Year Old is one of those bottles no whisky shelf should be without. Time to put this coastal gem in the
spotlight.
Oban is a distillery that every fan of
Scotland’s water of life should experience at least once. It’s a whisky that’s easy to overlook precisely because it’s always been there. There’s no massive hype swirling around the bottle like with some other Scotch whiskies, and it’s certainly not some ultra-rare limited edition costing hundreds of euros.
Oban 14 is simply a single malt that has shown for generations how beautifully balance and harmony can taste, layered with the influence of Scotland’s coast. That’s exactly why it’s a whisky you need to try. Before we dive into the flavor, let’s talk about the distillery.
The distillery that came before the town
Oban was founded in 1794 by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson. The distillery sits in the town of the same name, but it actually predates the settlement around it. Oban quite literally grew up around the stillhouse. Fittingly, the name means “little bay” in Gaelic.
The distillery is one of the smaller operations in the area. There are just two small, lamp-shaped stills, among the tiniest in the country. Small, old, and irreplaceable. Despite its size, Oban is no minor name:
Oban is one of the six original Classic Malts of Scotland, the range with which
Diageo introduced whisky drinkers to Scotland’s distinct regions. Alongside Glenkinchie, Dalwhinnie, Cragganmore,
Talisker and
Lagavulin, Oban represents the West Highlands. It’s hard to imagine better company.
Fun fact: If Oban wanted to expand, it would have quite the challenge. The distillery is literally wedged between steep cliffs, the harbor, and the town center’s houses. It’s hemmed in on all sides, and even knocking down a wall isn’t an option.
Why Oban 14 tastes so rich and oily
Oban may be small, but it’s a whisky with a distinctive profile where oil and wax notes make their presence known. That full, almost waxy character doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s the result of two traditional choices the distillery consciously preserves.
It starts with fermentation. While many distilleries keep this step fairly short, Oban lets the wash quietly do its thing for 65 to 110 hours. That long fermentation builds the fruity esters you later find in the glass as pear, apple, and orange.
Then there’s condensation. Oban still uses striking worm tubs—long, coiled copper tubes immersed in cold water. Because the vapor meets less copper than it would in a modern condenser, you end up with a heavier, oilier spirit. That’s the full, lightly viscous body that makes the distillery’s single malt so recognizable. And don’t forget the sea’s influence—Oban is, after all, a coastal distillery.
Fun fact: In spring 2023, Oban replaced both stills, not with larger or more modern versions, but with exact replicas of the originals. The goal: to ensure the whisky’s flavor wouldn’t change a bit.
The sea in a glass
Taste Oban 14 and you instantly know where it comes from. Beyond its creamy body, it carries a quintessential coastal character. Oban balances the aromas and flavors between Highland fruit and the smoky, maritime side of the islands, without fully belonging to either camp.
Here are the tasting notes:
- Nose: Sea salt and a fresh ocean breeze, orange peel and citrus, honeyed malt, and a fine thread of wood smoke.
- Palate: Full and silky, with dried figs, orange marmalade, and ripe stone fruits, followed by cinnamon, nutmeg, and a saline touch.
- Finish: Long and warming, with bittersweet orange, a light mossy peat smoke, and that signature oily body that lingers.
The whisky is bottled at 43% and matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks.
A classic that’s worth every penny
Oban 14 Year Old won’t cost you a fortune. Expect to pay around 50 to 55 euros for a bottle. For that, you get a 14-year-old whisky from one of
Scotland’s oldest distilleries. And don’t forget this is one of the iconic names from the Classic Malts—there’s a reason for that, as the whisky certainly doesn’t lack depth.
If there’s one bottle that belongs in every whisky cabinet, it’s this one. The packaging has a classic look and its story goes back over 200 years. Flavor-wise, it’s a celebration in its own right. For newcomers, Oban 14 is a perfect first step into the world of more complex single malts. For connoisseurs, it’s that dependable bottle you can always return to.
Made possible by Diageo. No alcohol under 18.
FAQ
- Is Oban 14 suitable for beginners?
Yes. Oban 14 is beautifully balanced and not overwhelmingly smoky, making it approachable. At the same time, there’s enough depth to keep it interesting as your whisky journey continues.
- Is Oban 14 a smoky whisky?
Lightly. There’s a subtle, mossy peat smoke, but fruit, honey, and sea salt are clearly center stage. Much gentler than an Islay whisky.
- What makes Oban so special?
Oban is one of Scotland’s oldest and smallest distilleries, cannot expand due to its location, and is one of the six original Classic Malts of Scotland.

Gleneagles has announced the launch of the first release in a new limited-edition series of single malts, produced in collaboration with the Highland based Glendronach Distillery.
The partnership brings together two Scottish institutions, both built on the same pursuit of excellence: The Glendronach’s mastery of Sherry-cask maturation and Gleneagles, which, since opening its doors in 1924, has been one of Scotland’s most luxurious and iconic hotels.
The new three-part Moments from The Glorious Playground series is said to take its inspiration from a perfect evening unfolding at Gleneagles.
The first release, The Glendronach x Gleneagles – A Moment of Reflection (46% ABV), is a 14 Year Old single malt Scotch whisky, which takes its name from the moment at the end of a day of pursuits played out across the surrounding Perthshire countryside.
In keeping with this moment, Master Blender Rachel Barrie has selected fine Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks, for which The Glendronach Distillery is renowned. Amber-gold in colour, the whisky is said to deliver notes of milk chocolate, crème caramel, Seville orange, fig, apricot and sultana on the nose, followed by notes of honeyed caramel, chocolate malt, cinnamon, nutmeg, sultana and hazelnut on the palate.
Two further editions will follow in 2027 and 2028. Edition Two – A Moment of Reunion, follows the story into an evening beginning at The American Bar. Edition Three – A Moment of Celebration, concludes the series beneath the celebratory sparkle of The Ballroom’s chandelier.
Commenting on the launch, Conor O’Leary, Group Managing Director at Gleneagles, said: “At Gleneagles, the best moments often happen once the day outdoors is done, when guests gather by the fire at the Shooting & Fishing Lodge to regale each other with tales about their escapades. Moments from the Glorious Playground gives that ritual its own whisky, crafted in partnership with one of Scotland’s most storied distilleries.”
Adip Agrawal, VP Global Brand Director, Malts and Irish at Brown-Forman, added: “Gleneagles and The Glendronach share a belief that the most memorable luxury experiences are defined by craftsmanship, attention to detail and a strong sense of place. This collaboration brings those values together beautifully, pairing Gleneagles’ exceptional hospitality with The Glendronach’s mastery of sherry-cask maturation. The result is a whisky that captures the character of the setting and the rituals that make it so special. As we celebrate The Glendronach’s 200th anniversary, it’s a privilege to mark this moment alongside one of Scotland’s most iconic estates.”
The Glendronach x Gleneagles – A Moment of Reflection, will be available from September 1st, exclusively from The Still Room whisky shop at Gleneagles, for a RRP of £160.00. There will also be 100 bottles of the first release available via a public online ballot.

Whisky has never been more portable. While tinned cocktails featuring the spirit have exploded in popularity over the past few summers – from refreshing Japanese-style highballs to ready-made old fashioneds and whisky mules – a few canny producers are taking the next logical step by putting neat whisky itself into aluminium tins.
It is an idea that might horrify traditionalists. Whisky has spent centuries cultivating an image of glass bottles, crystal tumblers, leather-clad hipflasks and refined fireside contemplation. By contrast, a 100ml can, containing four 25ml UK measures, feels more at home in a picnic basket or festival cool bag than on the top shelf of a drinks cabinet. But then, that’s precisely the point. A younger, cocktail-curious demographic is developing a nose for whisky and looking for a different experience.

READ THE STORYThere are now more than 70 active whisky distilleries in England. The geographical indication (GI) proposal for ‘English whisky’ is still in the works, but once approved, it stands to give the category a clear flag to fly at home and abroad.
With the growing number of distilleries out there, and the amount of mature spirit coming to market, there’s an ever-greater number of new English whiskies hitting the shelves. To help you stay up to date, The Whiskey Wash is publishing a monthly round-up of new English whisky releases.
This list includes core range and limited edition whiskies, as well as some single cask releases, released between mid-June and mid-July 2026. Data is sourced from Longshot Ventures’ Craft Spirits Reports.
Bimber — Re-charred Oak Casks Batch No. 2
This small-batch single malt from London-based Bimber was produced from a vatting of heavily re-charred American oak casks. The distillery’s on-site cooper hand-charred a select batch of casks to level 4 char (commonly known as ‘alligator char’, for the cracked surface it creates on the staves). The run of 1,140 bottles has sold out online, but indications from Bimber suggest this will be a recurring release, so keep an eye out for Batch No. 3.
Cooper King x Spirit of Yorkshire — Many Hands
This blended malt whisky is claimed as the first open collaboration between two English distilleries. It combines malt spirits from Spirit of Yorkshire and Cooper King, which were matured in sibling casks at Cooper King’s site near York. Each of the 1,922 bottles is individually numbered. Bottled at 48% ABV, it’s available via Cooper King’s website priced at £95.

Cotswolds — Hearts & Crafts 7 Madeira Cask
This is the latest instalment in the Cotswolds Distillery’s annual Hearts & Crafts series, celebrating the Arts & Crafts movement that flourished in its home region in the late 19th century. The 10-year-old single malt whisky was fully matured in American oak Madeira casks. A total of 1,200 bottles were released, making it one of the rarest Hearts & Crafts releases to date. It’s retailing for £100 through Cotswolds’ online shop.
Cotswolds — 12th Birthday Release
A single cask single malt released to mark the distillery’s 12th anniversary. The whisky was filled to cask in 2017, fully matured in a first-fill bourbon barrel, and bottled at 50% ABV. Like all Cotswolds whiskies, it was produced from 100% floor-malted barley. Only 182 bottles will be available, including through Cotswolds’ website.
The Lakes — The Chocolatier
The latest single malt offering from one of England’s more premium distilleries. Inspired by its namesake artisan, The Chocolatier is matured in a combination of European and American oak sherry casks, bourbon barrels and port casks. Bottled at 51% ABV, this limited edition is available via The Lakes’ online shop.
Spirit of Yorkshire — Filey Bay 10th Anniversary
Spirit of Yorkshire is marking a decade of distilling with a special release in its Filey Bay single malt whisky range. The 10th Anniversary edition (49.9% ABV) comprises spirit from a number of ex-bourbon and ex-Madeira casks filled at the distillery from its inception to 2023, including some liquid from Cask 001, filled in June 2016. A limited run of 2,016 bottles has been released, retailing on the distillery website for £90.
Spirit of Yorkshire — Filey Bay Heritage
This single malt whisky marries bourbon and sherry cask-matured spirit and is bottled at 46.5% ABV. Originally produced as an English Heritage exclusive, on sale at select sites nationally, it’s now on general sale through Spirit of Yorkshire’s online shop — but it’s still supporting English Heritage, with every bottle purchased contributing to the organisation’s conservation work.

If you’re going to stay at a luxury resort in the Scottish Highlands, you might as well drink a whisky that matches the experience.
The hotel, which has been featured on the World’s 50 Best Hotels list, is also known for its expansive golf courses and luxury wellness centers.
We did not get to sample the whisky, but the official tasting notes describe it as being “full-bodied and creamy,” with notes of honeyed caramel, chocolate malt, cinnamon, nutmeg, sultana, and hazelnut on the palate.
“Gleneagles and the Glendronach share a belief that the most memorable luxury experiences are defined by craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a strong sense of place,” said Adip Agrawal, VP global brand director malts and Irish at Brown-Forman, in a statement. “This collaboration brings those values together beautifully, pairing Gleneagles’ exceptional hospitality with the Glendronach’s mastery of sherry cask maturation. The result is a whisky that captures the character of the setting and the rituals that make it so special.”

The rise of English whisky and how producers want to take on the world
- Published
When the word whisky is mentioned, the first thought that comes to mind might be of ones produced in Scotland or even Ireland and the USA.
But could it be England in the future?
A brother and sister who set up Birmingham's first licensed whisky distillery in a garage at the end of their garden reckon there is "huge scope for growth" in the country's whisky industry.
Spirit of Birmingham was launched by Anthony and Joanie Dillon after a conversation around a kitchen table with their friends.
Less than 50 metres away from the table, their South Yardley distillery is now one of more than 70 whisky distilleries currently operating across England.
"What's produced in England is a fraction of what is produced in Scotland, let alone the rest of the world," co-founder Joanie Dillon admitted.
The idea for the business came after the pair realised Birmingham did not have a whisky distillery.
"Why not? It is the second city, it has a huge brewing history, but no-one has taken that extra step to make whisky," Joanie said.
"We don't have generational wealth, we are two kids from Acocks Green.
"Our parents came over from Ireland in the late 60s. With them they brought a stubbornness and [that] you can do it if you try."
Brother Anthony said they had started reading and researching around the idea, but found "you needed a minimum of £2m to build a distillery - which we didn't have".
"However, when Covid hit, we wanted to see if it was possible to build a distillery self-funded and built the distillery in a double garage at the end of my garden," he said.
In March, their single cask single malt was released.
Anthony said making whisky required patience as the spirit had to mature for at least three years before it could legally be called whisky.
"It is not the cleverest busiess plan when you pick a product that you have to sit on for at least three years," he admitted.
Protected status
An application for a Protected Geographical Indication (GI) for English whisky is currently being considered by the government.
Such protected status has been given before to items such as Cornish pasties, meaning only ones produced in Cornwall can be called Cornish.
The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs say the globally recognised mark of authenticity gives consumers confidence in the origins of products.
Supporters claim the move will help protect English whisky's reputation and identity.
With more than 70 producers across England, a spokesperson for the English Whisky Guild added their alcohol was now being exported to other countries.
"The proposed GI would help protect the identity, authenticity and reputation of English whisky as the category continues to grow," they added.
However, some distilleries and producers have raised concerns.
Anthony said one proposal requiring English single malt whisky to be made using copper pot stills would affect distilleries like his, which uses stainless steel equipment.
"What that would mean is that all the English single malt we have produced over the last five years, we wouldn't be able to call it English single malt whisky," he said.
Ministers were considering all the evidence gathered during the statutory assessment process before making a decision and they aimed to announce the outcome in "due course", a Defra spokesperson added.
Despite the uncertainty, producers like the Dillons remain optimistic about the future of the sector.
"The most exciting thing for me is it's grown phenomenally in the last 10 years," Joanie added.
"You've got the big companies, the big giants, but there's so many smaller companies like us who aren't afraid to take a risk and are going for true innovation in whisky."

Weller & Smoke Bourbon Dinner Brings an Evening of Fine Whiskey, Food and Cigars to the Yacht Club
OCEAN PINES, Md. — Bourbon enthusiasts will have an opportunity to experience one of America’s most sought-after whiskey names when the Weller & Smoke Bourbon Dinner comes to the Yacht Club in Ocean Pines on Thursday, September 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The special evening will bring together premium W.L. Weller bourbon, a chef-prepared dinner and complimentary premium cigars for an event designed around the flavors and traditions that have made bourbon an enduring part of American whiskey culture.
Produced by Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, the W.L. Weller line has developed a devoted following among bourbon enthusiasts. Unlike traditional bourbons that use rye as the secondary grain, Weller is a “wheated” bourbon, replacing rye with wheat in the mash bill. The result is a character often associated with a softer, smoother profile and notes of caramel, vanilla, oak and baking spice.
Weller also shares an important historical connection with another legendary name in American whiskey: William Larue Weller, a 19th-century whiskey pioneer whose name remains associated with the early popularity of wheated bourbon. Today, the Weller family of bourbons has become increasingly difficult to find at retail, with many expressions attracting considerable attention from collectors and enthusiasts.
The September event at the Yacht Club is intended to move beyond a traditional bourbon tasting. Guests will experience Weller selections alongside courses chosen to complement the whiskey, allowing the characteristics of each pour to change and develop as they interact with the food.
Following dinner, the evening will embrace another longtime pairing with American whiskey: a premium cigar. Premium cigars will be provided complimentary to guests, adding the “Smoke” to Weller & Smoke and offering an opportunity to relax along the waterfront and enjoy the final portion of the evening.
The event is part of the Yacht Club’s growing lineup of specialty culinary and spirits experiences, bringing unique dining events to Ocean Pines and the surrounding Delmarva community.
With Weller’s reputation and limited availability, organizers expect the dinner to appeal not only to longtime bourbon collectors but also to guests interested in learning more about one of the most talked-about families of American whiskey.
The Weller & Smoke Bourbon Dinner will be held Thursday, September 17, 2026, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Yacht Club in Ocean Pines. Tickets are $160 per person, plus tax and gratuity, and include the bourbon experience, dinner and complimentary premium cigars.

11 Smooth Whiskeys That Don't Need Ice Or Mixers
Whether you're a whiskey connoisseur or someone who's new to the world of whiskey, finding the most drinkable bottles can be a challenge. While everyone has their own preferences and different aspects they enjoy in whiskey — whether that's peaty, smoky, or sweet — many folks are looking for options that are easy to drink. It's disappointing to buy a bottle only to find it's basically undrinkable without water or ginger ale, so you might be looking for smooth whiskeys that don't need ice or mixers.
If you like your whiskey neat, you want it to go down easy. That's not to say that it has to be characterless or bland, but it does need to be drinkable. Whatever else you look for in a bottle and whether you like Scotch, Irish, bourbon, or rye, a certain smoothness is often a desirable characteristic. But, when you look at all the options on the shelf at a liquor store, it can be hard to tell whether or not that's what you're going to get.
As a whiskey drinker, I have my favorites, but I recognize that one person's opinion isn't enough to go on. I've searched high and low online, looking for the smoothest whiskeys, covering a wide range of varieties, and I'm satisfied that I've uncovered some of the best. So, here are eleven smooth whiskeys that don't need ice or mixers.
Redbreast 12 Year
If all you've ever had is Jameson, there are other Irish whiskeys you need to try. It doesn't start and end there. Redbreast 12 Year is a single pot whiskey, meaning everything in the bottle came from one distillery and is made in a single copper pot still. It's also made from a mix of malted and unmalted barley, which makes it extra creamy. In some iterations, this can bring a spiciness, but fans often talk about the smoothness of this bottle, mentioning that it's particularly sippable.
This whiskey is full-bodied and rich, while still remaining harmonious, with some reviewers saying it's the smoothest whiskey they've ever tasted. If you like your whiskeys particularly sweet or with a smokiness to them, this isn't going to fit the bill, but it does have a pleasant, complex flavor to it. Notes of ginger and buttery hot cross bun help it go down easily, while a mild sweetness comes along with honey and toffee flavors.
Aged 12 years, it has both a complexity and a mellowness to it that younger whiskeys lack, which adds to its drinkability. If you're looking for an Irish whiskey that you can drink without ice or mixers, this should make it onto your shortlist. Its fans appreciate its richness and oiliness, paired with a smoothness that keeps you sipping without needing adulteration.
Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select
If you've been wondering how to pick a good bourbon, Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select is a good one to start. Rich, yet smooth, it's a great example of an easy-to-drink bourbon that's enjoyable neat. So, you can put away the mixers and drink it straight-up.
According to the manufacturer's notes, this whiskey is "silky smooth, almost creamy at first with a long, warm satisfying tail." And, customer reviews back up its smoothness, so it's not just the distillery's word you need to take for it. As with most bourbon, it's on the sweeter end of the spectrum, with notes of brioche, honey, toffee, caramel, and chocolate. But, this is balanced by sweet spice flavors, like cinnamon and nutmeg, with a little mint and caraway seed that makes it fresher and less sickly sweet than some.
Although it's suitable for mixed drinks and cocktails, it doesn't need a mixer to be enjoyable. This makes it a versatile choice for anyone who often goes for neat whiskey but also wants something that would work nicely in a whiskey sour or a Manhattan. It's widely available and isn't an option that will break the bank, but it's a smooth and drinkable choice you can sip and savor.
Jameson Black Barrel
You've already heard of Jameson, but Black Barrel is the one that shows you what the brand can really do. It's a blend of pot still and small batch grain whiskeys, matured in double-charred barrels, which acts as a filter to limit harsh notes of alcohol and increase sweeter notes. Many reviewers call it smooth, but that doesn't mean it's lacking flavor. This is a step up from standard Jameson, as it's richer, deeper, and more textured, while still being easy to drink.
The double charring gives it a rounder and sweeter profile than you might expect from an everyday Irish whiskey. There are notes of butterscotch, fudge, and creamy toffee on the nose, while the flavor is nutty and sweet with notes of spice and vanilla. It's sweet and spicy in equal measure, but never so sweet that it's sickly or over the top.
Because it's bottled at a slightly higher strength than the original Jameson, you'd expect a bit more bite, but the opposite is true. It's smooth enough to sip neat without needing anything else in the glass. It's a brilliant, approachable choice that's perfect whether you're getting into whiskey for the first time or you're a seasoned drinker who wants a reliable, easy-drinking bottle in your liquor cabinet.
Glenmorangie 12 Year (The Original)
If you're looking for a Scotch you can drink without ice, water, or other mixers, Glenmorangie 12 Year — aka The Original — is a good shout. Scotch whiskey can't be less than three years old by U.K. law, but this one is aged for longer — 12 years — which gives it more complexity of flavor, along with a drinkable smoothness. This is a bump up, as The Original used to be 10-year-aged, and the extra two years in the cask are doing real work.
According to an interview with Glenmorangie's Director of Whisky Creation in Whisky Magazine, the goal was to make an already smooth whisky "smoother, creamier and even more complex" without losing what made the original so beloved in the first place. It's a common gateway for people just getting into single malt Scotch, and this age bump hasn't robbed it of its smoothness.
Reviews often touch on how well-balanced and drinkable it is. This can make it somewhat forgettable if you're into big, bold flavors, but it still goes down a treat. Its notes are those of sweet creamy vanilla layered with citrus, plus toffee, honey, and a little oak in the background. It has a spiciness and sweetness that makes it a great one to sip. It's an extremely approachable Scotch, which is much appreciated. This type of whiskey can feel hard to break into, but Glenmorangie 12 Year is the introduction you need.
Green Spot
If you want something light and smooth, Green Spot might be the answer. Like Redbreast, it's a single pot still Irish Whiskey, made from a mix of malted and unmalted barley and distilled at a single distillery, but where Redbreast is rich and deep, Green Spot keeps things light. It's matured in both bourbon and sherry casks, with the whiskey collectively aged around 7 to 8 years, and the unmalted barley still does its job of adding that classic oily, creamy mouthfeel that's common in Irish whiskey, without weighing the whole thing down.
Many consider it one of the best affordable Irish whiskeys, praising its smoothness and how good it is enjoyed neat. If you like things even lighter, it still tastes good with a little dilution from ice or a splash of water, but it's still highly drinkable without. This is a brilliant example of a creamy Irish whiskey without it being overly heavy.
One of its major selling points is how oily and creamy it is, like vanilla ice cream, yet balanced with a peppery kick and notes of tangy green apple underneath. It might be spicier than some people look for in a smooth whiskey, due to that unmalted barley, but never sharp enough to be unpleasant.
Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Looking for new bourbons to try if you like Woodford Reserve? Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a brilliant alternative, that's just as smooth and drinkable, but with a different vibe. This distillery dates back to the 1800s, so it has had plenty of ti

Wickedly Wonderful Blues with a dram or two
The Rhythm and Booze project bring their whisky and blues show to the Fringe. Filled with music, laughs and, of course, whisky, this is a brilliant experience that educates as much as it entertains.
The show is headed up by Felipe Schrieberg on vocals and lap steel guitar, and Paul Archibald on percussion. These two are skilled performers. They are endearing, funny and massively passionate about whisky. Schrieberg is the true front man, and keeps us hooked throughout. His knowledge of whisky and blues is amazing. Archibald backs him up well, he is as cool as they come, and is a wonderful completion to this double act. They work in perfect harmony through the show to deliver a wonderful performance.
They are talented whisky connoisseurs, who possess incredible knowledge. While one talks about the tasting notes, the other teaches us the proper way to nose the drink. What makes the show so enjoyable is that, while they embrace the pretentious side of tasting whisky, they laugh at it, and teach the audience how to sound like they know what they’re talking about without the need to know all that much at all. They give us three whiskies, the smooth Taiwanese Kavalan, a more complex Ryelaw, a rye scotch whisky and the smokey Laphroaig 15, which was a little too much for me in all honesty. Each is different, providing a wonderful mix of palettes for us to engage with.
Along with the whisky, we have the blues music. I challenge anyone not to be completely blown away by these musicians. Schrieberg has an amazing voice, and is a talented guitarist. He holds any melody or song thrown at him. Archibald is simply sensational. He possesses rhythm in every bone of his body. He plays the drums to excellence and can make sounds with a washboard that should be impossible. The music is incredible, and we are treated to a nice mix of it.
This is an amazing experience, and is a must see for any lover of whisky or music at the fringe. The Rhythm and Booze Project are making something truly amazing, and should be seen at every possible moment.
