Next Century Spirits buys Chicken Cock Whiskey
North Carolina-based Next Century Spirits has acquired four brands from Grain & Barrel Spirits, including Chicken Cock Whiskey and its two Kentucky visitor experiences.
Other brands included in the acquisition were Dixie Southern Vodka, Elvis Whiskey, and Kentucky whiskey EG Booz.
Chicken Cock’s Bardstown brand home, Circa 1856, and its sister location in Louisville, were also part of the deal.
The Spirits Business has reached out to Next Century Spirits (NCS) on the financial terms of the acquisition and whether aspects of production for the brands will change.
“Grain & Barrel built something real here with the Chicken Cock Whiskey brand: exceptional quality, deep history, and a relatable story,” said Anthony Moniello, Next Century Spirits’ CEO.
Of the Louisville location, which includes a sipping room and speakeasy in the city’s NuLu neighbourhood, and Chicken Cock’s Bardstown brand home, now part of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, he added: “We’re betting on a brand that stands out in a category where distinctive, authentic stories are winning.
“Together, the Circa 1856 locations give us a physical home in Kentucky and a direct way to introduce more drinkers to the brand’s history and taste.”
Chicken Cock’s history dates back to 1856 when it was founded by James A Miller, but the brand was revived by Grain & Barrel Spirits CEO Matti Anttila in 2012.
The Circa 1856 Bardstown brand home opened in June 2024, featuring a microdistillery, cocktail bar, and retail space, while the Louisville site followed the next year. Chicken Cock produces Kentucky Straight Bourbon and rye whiskeys.
The Bardstown opening enabled Chicken Cock to begin distilling its liquid on site, while Bardstown Bourbon Company remained its third-party partner.
Anttila will join the NCS board, alongside Damon DeSantis, a director of Celsius Holdings and Integrated BioPharma, and former CEO of Rexall Sundown.
He said: “We’ve spent the last decade reviving the Chicken Cock brand and want to see it reach its full potential. We believe NCS is the right partner to take it even further, returning the ‘famous old brand’ to its legacy position atop the US whiskey market.”
DeSantis, who is said to bring extensive experience as an investor and director across multiple industries, added: “This is a company that’s making smart bets. I’m glad to be part of what’s next.”
Other spirits brands in the NCS portfolio include: Nue Vodka; Kenny Chesney’s Blue Chair Bay Rum (acquired in 2025); Pocho Fino Tequila, co-founded by comedian and actor Gabriel ‘Fluffy’ Iglesias; and Bear Fight Whiskey, which is backed by Suits star Gabriel Macht.

YunTuo’s New-Make Spirit Wins Gold at The World Whisky Masters 2026, Marking a Milestone on Its Journey from Yunnan to the World Stage
SHANGHAI, CHINA, Aug. 05, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- YunTuo, Diageo's first whisky distillery in China, made a gold-medal debut on the global stage, securing Gold in the New Make category at The World Whisky Masters 2026. Competing against entries from whisky-producing regions around the world, YunTuo’s new make stood out for its clearly defined flavour character and outstanding overall performance.
YunTuo new-make spirit was awarded a Gold medal in the New Make category
New make is the distillery spirit produced through the whisky-making process after distillation and before cask maturation. It is a defining expression of a distillery’s character and whisky-making mastery. This Gold medal is therefore more than an accolade: it is a direct validation of the quality of YunTuo’s new make by an international panel of industry professionals, and a powerful endorsement of its spirit character development and integrated whisky-making system. Winning Gold on its first appearance at a global professional competition marks an important milestone for YunTuo, one that takes the distillery from its home in Yunnan to the world stage.
The World Whisky Masters is organised by The Spirits Business, an international trade publication serving the global spirits industry. A globally influential industry competition, The World Whisky Masters brings together entries from established and emerging whisky-producing regions worldwide. Each entry is assessed through blind tasting by a professional panel of whisky and spirits specialists. By spotlighting the flavour expressions shaped by different origins, raw materials and production methods, the competition provides the industry with an international platform for professional evaluation and exchange.
As the first whisky distillery established in China by Diageo, a global leader in scotch-making, YunTuo draws on more than two centuries of Scotch whisky-making expertise while embracing the distinctive natural environment and rich resources of the Yunnan highlands. Since its establishment, YunTuo has continued to forge a whisky-making system and flavour identity of its own. The Gold-winning new make opens with bright, fresh fruit notes that draw out delicate floral aromas, creating a distinctive fruit-led floral character. Clear and immediately recognisable, this character establishes a strong flavour foundation for YunTuo’s spirit before it enters cask maturation.
From the Yunnan Highlands, YunTuo’s New-Make Character Takes Shape
Unlike matured whisky, new make has not yet been shaped by the character of the wood, toast levels or the flavor of previous fills. It therefore offers a more direct expression of the aromatic structure and spirit character created through mashing, fermentation and distillation. YunTuo’s fruit-led floral expression is not the result of any single making process, but of the long-term interplay between Yunnan’s highland conditions, a disciplined whisky-making system and close collaboration between global masters and the local production team.
Flavor is terroir’s gift, the natural environment slowly translated into spirit. YunTuo Single Malt Whisky Distillery is in Eryuan, Dali, in western Yunnan, at approximately 2,100 meters above sea level. The name "YunTuo” reflects the distillery’s connection to the land: "Yun” pays tribute to Yunnan and the distillery’s relationship with its natural resources, while "Tuo” signifies exploration and pioneering, expressing YunTuo’s continued pursuit of new possibilities for Chinese-origin single malt whisky.
Yunnan’s rich biodiversity and natural resources provide a foundation for the distillery’s flavor exploration. The relatively temperate highland climate pronounced diurnal temperature variation and Sanye Spring all inform YunTuo’s whisky-making approach. As one of the natural springheads of Erhai Lake, Sanye Spring is fed by snowmelt and rainfall accumulated over time and naturally filtered through layers of highland rock, providing a clear and delicate foundation for the spirit. From climate and water to the region’s abundant natural resources, YunTuo continues to explore how Yunnan’s ecology can be translated into layered fruit and floral aromas, creating a flavor expression rooted in place.
Scotch Whisky-Making Expertise and Local Craft: Building YunTuo’s Whisky-Making System
Terroir provides inspiration, a disciplined whisky-making system turns it into a stable and clearly defined flavor profile. YunTuo brings together Scotch whisky expertise and the long-term practice of a locally rooted production team to establish its new-make style.
With more than 40 years of experience in Scotch whisky, Dr. Jim Beveridge OBE serves as Chief Advisor to YunTuo. YunTuo is also the first Chinese whisky project in which he has been deeply involved since retiring, extending a lifetime of expertise into the new terroir of Yunnan. Craig Wallace, Diageo Master Blender, and Andrew Millsopp, Diageo Master Distiller, provide specialist guidance on flavor development and distillation respectively, working together to shape YunTuo’s whisky-making system.
Working closely with Scotch master team is YunTuo’s local production team, led by Distillery Manager Edison Chiao. As a founding member of the project, Edison guided the team through equipment installation and commissioning, process calibration and the transition to stable operations. Through ongoing observation and assessment of new make across multiple production runs, the team has translated Diageo’s two centuries of whisky-making expertise into daily production and progressively defined YunTuo’s new-make style.
Throughout production, YunTuo applies disciplined control across key stages to translate Yunnan’s natural conditions into a clear fruit-and-floral expression. Slow mashing allows the malt’s natural flavors to develop gradually, creating a delicate and clean foundation for the spirit. A 120-hour fermentation gives the yeast sufficient time to develop aromatic precursors, building connected layers of fruit and floral character. Slow distillation, together with the reflux characteristics of YunTuo’s Abercrombie copper pot stills, helps preserve light and delicate fruit and floral aromas while building a layered structure in the new-make spirit.
New-Make Character, Evolving Through Maturation
The Gold medal at The World Whisky Masters 2026 recognizes YunTuo’s current new-make style and whisky-making system, while marking the distillery’s progression from new make into long-term maturation. The fruit-and-floral framework of the new make forms the foundation of YunTuo’s distillery style. As the spirit enters cask, different wood types, previous fills and maturation conditions will further develop its aromas, texture and structure, allowing YunTuo’s luscious and layered distillery style to unfold over time. YunTuo is currently conducting maturation trials across a range of cask types, exploring how cask character, maturation stage and target flavor can guide the spirit’s continued development.
From its fruit-led floral new-make foundation to the layers that continue to develop through maturation, YunTuo’s vision remains clear: to carry forward more than two centuries of Scotch whisky-making heritage and take the natural landscape of the Yunnan highlands as its flavor blueprint, creating a distinctive Chinese-origin single malt whisky.

The Macallan has unveiled the final chapter of the Harmony Collection. For this concluding release, the Scottish distillery has bottled two new single malt whiskies with a tropical twist: The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Fresh Coconut and Inspired by Toasted Coconut.
The Macallan notes that coconut is an aroma that rarely shows distinctly in the brand’s whiskies. For this release, the Whisky Mastery Team specifically selected a range of American oak casks. Thanks to the wood’s natural lactone content, aromas emerged reminiscent of both fresh and toasted coconut.
What’s the difference between the Harmony coconut whiskies?
The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Fresh Coconut is the lighter, livelier of the pair. Bottled at 46.3 percent alcohol by volume (ABV), it marries fresh coconut with citrus, tropical fruit, vanilla, and gentle spice.
For this whisky, The Macallan used, among others, American oak casks that were previously sherry seasoned. The coconut notes from these casks were further refined with the influence of bourbon barrels.
Inspired by Toasted Coconut, by contrast, is fuller and more mature in character. This expression leans heavily on American virgin oak casks. Here too, bourbon barrels were used to bring the whisky into balance. The result is a sweeter whisky with notes of toasted coconut, white chocolate, and caramel. This bottling is a travel retail exclusive.
Tasting notes for the new Harmony Collection
Below are the detailed tasting notes for both whiskies:
Inspired by Fresh Coconut
- Nose: Fresh coconut, citrus, tropical fruit, vanilla, sweet oak, and gentle spice.
- Palate: Coconut milk, zesty lime, and a soft sweetness.
- Finish: Bright, fresh, and floral.
Inspired by Toasted Coconut
- Nose: Toasted coconut, crème caramel, white chocolate, and vanilla bean.
- Palate: Coconut truffle, lime marmalade, and frangipane.
- Finish: Soft, full, and sweet, with lingering notes of coconut and American oak.

The Macallan Harmony Collection features standout packaging
As with earlier releases in the Harmony Collection, the packaging plays a key role. The boxes for both whiskies are made from paper that incorporates repurposed coconut fibers.
Coconut shells and fibers are carbonized in an emissions-free combustion process. The resulting charcoal gives the paper its natural black color. In this way,
The Macallan stays true to the Harmony Collection’s guiding principle: reusing natural by-products.
The concluding release is also tied to the TimeSpirit Dining Experience at The Macallan Estate. For this, the whisky maker once again collaborates with El Celler de Can Roca. Pastry chef Jordi Roca created six sweet dishes and serving suggestions crafted specifically to pair with the coconut whiskies.
The Macallan Inspired by Fresh Coconut is coming soon. An exact on-sale date and recommended price have not yet been announced. Inspired by Toasted Coconut will be available exclusively through travel retail.

Top scorers from The Irish Whiskey Masters 2026
The results are in – and Irish whiskey has never looked stronger. We cover the medal winners from our annual blind tasting.
There’s plenty to talk about in the Irish whiskey world. Look at 2025 exports, and a mix of destocking and tariffs in the US weighed heavily on the category, contributing to a 5% global decline in export value, according to Bord Bia data. Meanwhile, in June, Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine launched a public consultation to review the regulations that govern Irish whiskey (see The Big Story on pages 4-5 for further details).
But what consistently gets people chatting about the category is the quality of the liquid. Keep reading, and you’ll soon see that even without fancy packaging, brand heritage and clever marketing, Irish whiskey is here to stay – and for good reasons.
Sponsored by Talis, to assess this year’s entries, experienced judges gathered at The Mayfair Townhouse in London. The first panel included Joe Wadsack, freelance brand consultant, Martin Moran MW, drinks writer, and Melita Kiely, editor-in-chief of The Spirits Business, and chair of The Global Spirits Masters Competitions (GSMC).
A second group was chaired by Nicola Carruthers, deputy editor of The Spirits Business. She was accompanied by Graham McAteer, spirits partnership manager at The Curious Drinker, and Adelaide Hayes Elliott, general manager at Soho Whisky Club.
Ruchira Neotia, drinks consultant and Indian market specialist, chaired another team of judges. Joining her were Clinton Cawood, freelance spirits journalist, and James Bunting, founder of New Make Communications.
Sitting on a fourth panel were Bryan Rodriguez-Curtis, spirits judge and experienced buyer, who chaired his group. Also judging alongside him was Nick Larsson-Bell, senior spirits and beer buyer at Harvey Nichols. David T Smith, drinks writer, consultant and co-founder of the Craft Distilling Expo, chaired a panel comprising Marie Cheong-Thong, food and beverage educator and founder of The Larder at 36, and Angelo Sparvoli, founder and director of Angelo Sparvoli Hospitality.
Forming the sixth and final group of judges were Billy Abbott, ambassador for The Whisky Exchange, Dan Greifer, head bartender at London’s Lowcountry, and Karen Taylor, marketing director and co-founder of Whisky For Everyone, who chaired her panel.
The competition started by looking at where Irish whiskey offers the most value for money, starting with Blended – Standard (priced up to £30/US$40). Irish Distillers cleaned up, claiming six of the seven Silver medals plus one Gold, which went to the original expression of Jameson. The Gold medallist was said to taste like “malt cake, peach, with a tangy orange peel finish – classically smooth”.
Moving on to Blended – Premium (£31-£45), and two Golds were awarded, to Jameson Crested, which was “nutty, fruity, with rich, red fruits”, and Teeling Small Batch, celebrated for being “pleasant with soft fruits, citrus, well-balanced and easy-drinking”. Two Silvers completed the flight.
Teeling shone in the Blended – Super-Premium (£46-£60) flight, with its Teeling Christmas Batch winning a Gold, for being “rich and robust with dark forest fruits, caramel, and toffee”.
The first Master medallists of the day presented themselves in the Blended – Ultra-Premium flight (£60+). The two top awards went to Powers Gold Label and Powers Irish Rye. The former was “just lovely”, delivering “freshly baked bread, baking spices, lots of raisins and deep plummy character”. Powers Irish Rye was “so complex”, with “green apple skin, Calvados personality, and pure, fresh Nordic rye bread”. Five Gold medals made for a strong flight, with winners including Teeling 15 Years Old Japanese Explorers Series, which tasted like “golden syrup and red apples, fig rolls, and shortbread”.
With the blends complete, attention turned towards single malts, starting with those at a premium price point between £41-£60. Among a quartet of Gold winners were Teeling Single Malt with “rich chocolate and toffee, and some minerality”, and Triarach, said to be “bright, fresh and fun”. A duo of Silver medals were also awarded.
In the Single Malt – Super-Premium (£61-£90) heat, a Gold medal was handed to 26.4, Double Distilled Chocolate Malt, Oloroso Sherry Finish from The Copeland Distillery. The whiskey had “lovely malty character on the nose with vibrant fruitiness and a slight tropical note” when sipped. Two Silvers finished the flight.
In the most expensive segment of single malts, ultra-premium (£91+), a trio of Master medallists proved they were worth every penny. First, That Boutique-y Whisky Company Bushmills Single Cask for its “pronounced aroma of dried red fruits and citrus”, while the palate was “smooth, textural and rich, with an explosion of juicy red currants, wild strawberries and cherries”. Master-winning The Donn, from The Craft Irish Whiskey Co, was celebrated for its “rich and heavily Sherried” aroma and “beautiful, rich, silky” palate with notes of “black cherries, chocolate, and vanilla fudge”.
The third Master medal in the flight went to Teeling 33 Years Old Single Malt Rum Cask. The judges praised the whiskey’s “touch of maritime” on the nose along with “caramel notes. The palate has a nice sweetness, baked banana, fudge, and a pleasant woodiness.” Two Gold medals were awarded.
Single Grain – Premium (£31-£45) whiskeys were poured next, resulting in one Silver medal and a Gold for Method and Madness Single Grain. The whiskey showed “light peach, nice texture and caramelised apples” when sipped.
Teeling added to its medal haul in the Single Grain – Ultra-Premium (£60+) category. “Nice lingering sweetness, orchard fruits, honey, oakiness – delicious,” enthused the judges.
Next came what is arguably Ireland’s most iconic style of whiskey: single pot still. Starting at the premium price point (£41-£60), three Golds and one Silver medal were awarded. The Golds were: Titanic Distillers 5 Years Old Single Pot Still PX Finish, with notes of “baked pear”; “super-classic” Jameson Distiller’s Batch, with “shortbread and apple skin” flavours, and; Dingle Single Pot Still with “some dark cherry and apple” notes.
The total medal tally rose again in the Super-Premium round (£61-£90), with one Master, six Golds and one Silver medal. The Master medal was bestowed upon Green Spot, found to be “rich and full-bodied, spiced apple and cinnamon wow”, the judges said with praise. Some of the Gold winners were: “honeyed, spicy, delectable” Green Spot 100 Year Anniversary 10 Years Old; “classic” Teeling Wonders of Wood Series 4 Carpathian Oak, said to be a “fantastic dram; very little not to like”; and Power’s John’s Lane Cask Strength, liked for notes of “dark fruit and candyfloss”.
An even bigger flight of Single Pot Still – Ultra-Premium (£91+) followed, delivering two Masters, 13 Golds and three Silver medals.
Irish Distillers collected both Master awards, one for its Powers Three Swallow Release and the second for Yellow Spot. “Bright, peachy, fresh and lively,” was how Powers Three Swallow Release’s aroma was detailed, while the palate was liked for its ‘creaminess, good texture – peaches and cream”. For Master-winning Yellow Spot, the judges liked the whiskey’s “honey, nutmeg, crème brûlée and rich fruit”.
Gold winners in this round included Redbreast 15 Years Old, which had notes of spiced sponge cake, stewed orchard fruit and brown sugar”. Also taking home Gold was 26.5 Double Distilled Single Pot Still Château Palmer Finish, enjoyed for flavours of “peppery spice, fruit cake, sweetness, malty notes and shortbread biscuits”.
The final flight was Flavoured Irish Whiskey Spirit Drinks, which resulted in one Gold medal for Jameson Orange, and a Master accolade for Yutumomo Milk Candy Whiskey. The spirit had “vanilla, condensed milk, chocolate”, and a “well-balanced” profile.
At the end of each edition of The GSMC tastings, the Master medallists a
Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey is one of the most iconic, prominent, and common whiskey brands in the world. But the Old No. 7 bottle’s omnipresence doesn’t mean the distillery is boring—far from it. Indeed, Jack Daniel’s Distiller Series is one of the most exciting and experimental lines in all of American whiskey. And the latest version is a nearly decade-old whiskey with a high-octane approach to Jack’s classic Tennessee profile.
Let’s get right into the details. On August 4th, Jack Daniel’s announced its 17th Distillery Series bottling, officially titled “High Angel’s Share Tennessee Whiskey.” The whiskey was distilled in 2016 from Jack’s classic mash bill of 80% corn, 8% rye, and 12% malted barley. After barrelling, the whiskey aged on the top floor of Barrelhouse 1-13 on Coy Hill—generally considered the highest point on the distillery’s main aging campus.
Heat rises, and aging whiskey on the top floors of a Tennessee warehouse can do some remarkable things to proof and flavor. Barrels in those locations experience summer temperatures approaching or exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit. That leads to quite a bit of evaporation loss—50% or greater loss after a decade isn’t out of the ordinary—which is commonly referred to as the “Angel’s Share.”
That unavoidable loss is an accountant’s nightmare, but it can also lead to some seriously flavorful whiskey. In essence, this latest Distillery Series release celebrates what the angels take by embracing what they leave behind.
“This release is a perfect example of what happens when we let nature take the lead,” says Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller, in a press statement. “By resting these barrels on the very top floor of our Coy Hill barrelhouse, the intense heat increased the angel’s share over the years. What’s left behind in the wood is a beautifully concentrated profile that showcases a whole different side of our traditional Tennessee Whiskey.”
Barrels for this batch were selected by Jack Daniel’s Whiskey Taster Dale McGee. After dumping and batching, the release clocked in at a batch proof 138.4. It’s the latest Jack Daniel’s whiskey to showcase Coy Hill’s unique aging environment, joining special releases in 2021 (Coy Hill High Proof Single Barrel), 2022 (distillery-only Small Batch), and 2024 (Coy Hill Barrelhouse 8).
I haven’t had the chance to try this whiskey for myself just yet. But brand tasting notes mention a palate big on “brown sugar, banana nut bread, and a hint of maple syrup”—fairly classic flavors for the distillery, likely amplified at 138.4 proof.
Like all Distillery Series releases, High Angel’s Share Tennessee Whiskey is only available via select Tennessee retailers and at the distillery’s White Rabbit Bottle Shop. Bottles—in half size, 375mL format—carry a suggested retail price of $44.75.

State of the Union was created to honor both America’s history and the character of the American West. The release arrives as the United States will mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Wyoming joined the union in 1890 as the 44th state. The distillery is the state’s first legal producer.
“This anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on what endures—the land, the people, and the spirit of independence that continues to define America,” said Wyoming Whiskey co-founder David DeFazio. “State of the Union is our way of raising a glass to that shared history and the values that helped shape the West.”
The bourbon is aged for six years and bottled at 98 proof (49% ABV).
According to the official notes from the brand, the nose opens with raspberry and soft lemon, rounded out with a touch of sweet tea. The palate offers peaches and raspberries layered with white chocolate and brown sugar. The finish is described as “a sharp explosion of candied ginger and cherry, balanced by smooth milk chocolate.”
Like all Wyoming Whiskey expressions, State of the Union is shaped by the conditions of the Big Horn Basin. The whiskey is made with locally sourced non-GMO grains from Wyoming farmers and limestone water drawn from aquifers near the distillery. It is aged in newly charred oak barrels through the region’s dramatic climate shifts.

Wyoming Whiskey was founded in 2006 by Brad and Kate Mead, together with partner David DeFazio. The brand was established with the goal of creating “America’s next great bourbon,” which has since expanded to include all styles of American whiskey.
The distillery uses corn, winter wheat, winter rye, barley, and water sourced from the Bighorn Basin. “Every drop is truly made of Wyoming,” the brand said.
Irish single malt continues to build on its centuries-old heritage by embracing innovative cask maturation and independent bottlings that showcase the category's growing sophistication.
This year's Master Medal winners at the Global Spirits Masters span three very different styles: a rare single-cask Bushmills selected by specialty bottler That Boutique-y Whisky Company, an innovative contemporary release from The Donn Craft Irish Whiskey, and an exceptionally mature rum-cask-finished expression from Teeling. Together they illustrate the diversity and quality that now characterize Ireland's premium single malt sector. Below are background and tasting notes on these top-rated single malt Irish whiskeys from the 2026 Global Spirits masters competition.
That Boutique-y Whisky Company Bushmills Single Cask, NAS, 48.9% ABV, 500 ml. Master Medal
Selected by independent bottler That Boutique-y Whisky Company, this limited-edition single cask release showcases Bushmills' classic triple-distilled single malt character in its purest form. Bottled from a single cask without blending, it accentuates the distillery's signature fruit-forward elegance while allowing the cask's influence to shine.
The whiskey features aromas of ripe orchard fruits, honey, vanilla, and citrus peel, layered with toasted oak and delicate floral notes. Silky and beautifully integrated on the palate, it develops flavors of baked apple, pear tart, caramel, malt biscuits, and subtle baking spices, all wrapped in a creamy texture. The finish is long and refined, leaving lingering notes of vanilla, oak spices, and sweet orchard fruit.
The Donn Craft Irish Whiskey, NAS, 46% ABV, 700 ml. Master Medal
Produced in small batches, The Donn from Craft Irish Whiskey is a contemporary Irish single malt that highlights quality cask selection and a fruit-forward house style. Matured in carefully selected oak casks and bottled without chill filtration, it delivers a richer mouthfeel while preserving the bright fruit character typical of Irish malt whiskey.
The whiskey features aromas of honey, peach, vanilla and orange blossom, complemented by subtle toasted oak notes. It’s rich and creamy on the palate, displaying layers of ripe stone fruit, butterscotch, sweet malt, toasted almonds and subtle cinnamon spice. The finish is clean and persistent, with lingering notes of vanilla, honey and seasoned oak.
Teeling 33-Year-Old Single Malt Rum Cask, 46% ABV, 700 ml. Master Medal
One of the oldest Irish single malts ever released by Teeling, this exceptional whiskey was initially matured in traditional oak before undergoing an extended finishing period in rare rum casks. The secondary maturation adds tropical-fruit complexity while complementing the elegant character developed over more than three decades of aging. This expression is drawn from a stock of single malt whiskey barrels originally acquired from the Cooley Distillery when Teeling was first organized, and which have been steadily released over the last decade plus in ever-older maturities.
The whiskey is intensely aromatic on the nose, featuring notes of tropical fruits, ripe mango, pineapple, honey, and seasoned oak, followed by hints of coconut, orange zest, and soft spice. Exceptionally silky and luxurious in texture, the palate showcases flavors of crème brûlée, toffee, baked banana, dried apricot, dark chocolate, and warming spices, all balanced by seasoned oak and the light sweetness of the rum cask. The finish is remarkably long, elegant and complex, with lingering notes of tropical fruit, vanilla, subtle oak tannins and sweet baking spices.
This year's Master medal winners demonstrate the exceptional evolution of Irish single malt whiskey. Bushmills continues to show why it remains one of Ireland's benchmark distilleries, particularly through carefully selected single-cask bottlings, while newer producers and independent brands are pushing the category in innovative directions.
Teeling's extraordinary 33-year-old rum cask expression illustrates just how effectively extended maturation and creative cask finishing can elevate Irish single malt to the highest levels of luxury. Collectively, these award-winning whiskeys highlight a category increasingly defined by diversity, craftsmanship, and a willingness to innovate while remaining true to Ireland's tradition of smooth, triple-distilled single malt whiskey.

The official whiskey of Texas A&M Athletics is bringing a true bourbon experience to Texas
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS, Aug. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Unreined Whiskey today announced the grand opening of its visitor's center and rickhouse at WildHorse Ranch in College Station, taking place this Saturday, August 8. The Unreined rickhouse, where spirits are stored and aged, is based on traditional Kentucky styled rickhouses, offering guests a rare opportunity to step inside and experience the aging environment firsthand.
"Our goal is simple, to age exceptional whiskey in Texas while creating an experience that rivals the best distilleries in the country," said Nelson Ingram, Chief Marketing Officer & Blender. "WildHorse Ranch offers the ideal environment with a unique combination of temperature and humidity that allows our whiskey to develop rich, complex character."
Designed to bring the heritage, craftsmanship, and immersive spirit of traditional Kentucky bourbon culture to the heart of Texas, the four-story, 30,000-square-foot facility seamlessly blends production, hospitality, and experiential design. The rickhouse is engineered to optimize airflow and aging conditions, while thoughtfully designed guest spaces invite visitors to engage more deeply with the whiskey-making process.
While rooted in bourbon tradition, Unreined Whiskey's vision is deeply connected to its Texas setting. Inspired by classic Kentucky rickhouses, the structure was built by Buzick Construction of Bardstown, Kentucky, widely regarded as a global leader in rickhouse construction, and designed by the renowned firm Joseph & Joseph out of Louisville, Kentucky. It also features a custom art installation by Houston-based artist Jesse de Leon, showcasing the brand's commitment to celebrating Texas creativity alongside whiskey craftsmanship.
"Unreined is exactly the kind of authentic, only-here experience we love to see in College Station," said Jeremiah Cook, Assistant Director of Tourism at Visit College Station. "New attractions like this give visitors more reasons to stay and explore — and that translates into real economic impact for our city, supporting local businesses and strengthening tourism across the region. Rooted in our area's agricultural heritage, Unreined is a natural fit for our community, and Visit College Station is thrilled to support and partner with their team as they open their doors."
Guests can enjoy guided tours, curated tastings, watch parties, private events, and a speakeasy-style lounge, making the rickhouse a destination for both casual visitors and devoted whiskey enthusiasts. Enhancing the experience, Unreined Whiskey has partnered with restaurateur John Harvey Slocum and his restaurant group to offer farm-to-table bison burgers sourced from WildHorse Ranch, creating a distinctly Texan pairing of food and spirits, including tallow fries and cocktails.
Debuting alongside the grand opening is Unreined Wheated Bourbon, a 7‑year blend of straight wheated bourbons distilled in Kentucky & Texas at 104.2 proof.
Starting August 8th, Unreined will be open to the public Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Beyoncé takes full control of SirDavis whisky after buying out Moët Hennessy
Beyoncé has taken full ownership of SirDavis American Whisky, ending Moët Hennessy’s involvement less than two years after the brand’s launch. The move comes as LVMH continues to reshape its drinks division following a prolonged downturn in Cognac and Champagne sales.
Beyoncé has acquired full ownership of SirDavis American Whisky after buying out Moët Hennessy’s stake in the brand she launched alongside the luxury drinks group in 2024.
Financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
SirDavis marked Moët Hennessy’s first spirits brand created from the ground up in the United States and represented the company’s attempt to strengthen its position in the American whiskey market.
The brand is named after Beyoncé’s paternal great-grandfather, Davis Hogue, a farmer and moonshiner in the American South during Prohibition.
Moët Hennessy exits
The reasons behind Moët Hennessy’s exit have not been disclosed, and neither party has commented publicly on the rationale for the change in ownership.
SirDavis remains bottled at 44% ABV and is produced from a mash bill of 51% rye and 49% malted barley. The whiskey is distilled by MGP Ingredients before being finished, blended and bottled in Beyoncé’s home state of Texas.
Partner Content
The liquid was developed by Dr Bill Lumsden, director of whisky creation at Glenmorangie and Ardbeg, working alongside SirDavis head blender Cameron George and Beyoncé herself.
Retailing at around US$89 (£79 in the UK), the whiskey was designed to combine classic American rye character with influences drawn from Scotch and Japanese whisky.
Strategic shift
The ownership change comes during a period of restructuring at Moët Hennessy, which has faced weaker demand for both Cognac and Champagne in key international markets.
As previously reported by the drinks business, LVMH denied speculation last year that Diageo could sell its 34% stake in Moët Hennessy. More recently, the luxury group has introduced management changes across its wines and spirits division as it seeks to improve performance.
Beyoncé’s decision to take sole ownership gives the global artist complete control over the future direction of SirDavis as the premium American whiskey brand continues to establish itself in an increasingly competitive category.
From partnership to sole ownership
When SirDavis launched in August 2024, Beyoncé described the whiskey as a tribute to her family’s history and her long-standing appreciation of the category.
“I’ve always been drawn to the power and confidence I feel when drinking quality whisky and wanted to invite more people to experience that feeling,” she said at the time.

Barber has been quietly producing single malt at the distillery, which is set within four repurposed farm buildings surrounded by rolling hills in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. He owns and runs the operation single-handedly. The warehouse now holds well over one thousand casks.
Barber’s stated aim is “to create a single malt distillery in the Wylye Valley which becomes a home for whisky drinkers around the world.”
The Wylye Valley’s fertile soil allows Barber to source barley from a local grower and use a nearby traditional floor maltings. The farm also has its own water source, where all of Wylye’s spirit is mashed, distilled and matured. The distillery uses a half-tonne brewhouse with five temperature-controlled washbacks. A balanced double distillation runs on two traditional Forsyths copper pot stills.
Casks mature in an old tin-roof pole barn, which embraces the valley’s seasonal swings. Barber sources wood from three cooperages.
Rather than finishing, all of Wylye’s distillate is filled into casks for full-term maturation. This gives various options for vatting in the future. Ex-bourbon barrels form the bedrock of the warehouse. Barber also uses ex-solera butts and runs a seasoning program with wineries in Montilla-Moriles and Jerez-Xérès-Sherry.

The visitor facilities sit in a restored dairy. It features a bespoke bar, log burner, cosy interiors and a growing library of books on spirits, beer and wine, alongside a vatting lab and drinks terrace.
“The first bourbon barrels I laid down in July 2023 have now turned three,” Barber said. “Having spent more time with these vessels than my family – often to the latter’s relief – I’ve become quite attached and it won’t be easy letting them go.” He added: “I also want to give my whisky a chance to evolve and reach its full potential, so I won’t be bottling just yet.” Barber said it was time “to start letting drinkers know what I’ve been up to.”

Few whiskey styles are as uniquely Irish as single pot still whiskey. Distilled from a mash bill of malted and unmalted barley in traditional copper pot stills, the style is famous for its signature mixture of creamy texture, vibrant orchard fruit and distinctive peppery spice.
This year's Master medal winners at the Global Spirits Masters (GSM) celebrate both the category's heritage and its continuing excellence. Powers Three Swallow earned the competition's highest accolade as Taste Master. At the same time, the iconic Green Spot and Yellow Spot once again demonstrated why they remain benchmarks for premium Irish pot still whiskey. Below are brief backgrounds on the top-ranked Irish pot-still whiskeys, along with my tasting notes.
Powers Three Swallow, NAS, 40% ABV, 700 ml. Taste Master Medal
Inspired by a historic Powers bottling, Three Swallow is a single pot-still whiskey produced from a traditional mash bill of malted and unmalted barley, then triple-distilled. Matured primarily in first-fill and refill ex-bourbon barrels with a proportion of Oloroso sherry casks, it showcases the bold, spicy house style that has long distinguished Powers from other Irish whiskeys. This expression was awarded the Taste Master Medal as the top-ranked Irish whiskey in the 2026 GSM judging.
The whiskey features aromas of ripe apple, pear and honey, layered with vanilla, toasted oak and baking spices. It’s rich, creamy, and beautifully textured on the palate, showcasing flavors of sweet malt, baked orchard fruits, butterscotch, roasted nuts, and the lively cracked-pepper spice that defines classic pot-still whiskey. The finish is long, warming, and beautifully balanced, with lingering notes of vanilla, oak, cinnamon, and peppery spice.
Yellow Spot, 12 Years Old, 46% ABV, 700 ml. Master Medal
Yellow Spot is matured for a minimum of 12 years in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels, sherry butts, and Malaga wine casks. The latter adds a further layer of sweetness and exotic fruit to the classic Spot whiskey profile. The combination creates one of Ireland's most complex and luxurious single pot still expressions.
The whiskey features aromas of honey, ripe peaches, apricots and tropical fruit, complemented by vanilla, toasted oak and sweet wine notes. It’s luxuriously silky on the palate, showcasing layers of crème brûlée, baked apples, dried apricots, marzipan, and warming spices, all wrapped around a rich, creamy texture. The finish is exceptionally long, sweet and elegant, leaving lingering notes of honey, dried fruit, seasoned oak and gentle pot still spices.
Green Spot, NAS, 40% ABV, 700 ml. Master Medal
One of Ireland's most celebrated single pot still whiskeys, Green Spot is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks. The whiskey is famous for its vibrant fruit character, exceptional balance, and distinctive creamy texture that have made it a benchmark for the category.
The whiskey features aromas of fresh orchard fruits, especially green apple and pear, accompanied by honey, vanilla, and delicate floral notes. It’s smooth and creamy on the palate, showcasing ripe apples, sweet malt, toasted almonds, seasoned oak, and subtle baking spices, with the classic pot-still spice providing freshness and structure. The finish is clean, elegant, and persistent, fading with lingering notes of orchard fruit, vanilla, and soft peppery spice.
The Master medal winners reaffirm why single pot still whiskey remains Ireland's signature contribution to the world of whiskey. Powers Three Swallow's Taste Master title recognizes a whiskey that precisely captures this style's hallmark combination of richness, spice and balance, while Green Spot and Yellow Spot continue to define the premium end of the category through outstanding cask management and exceptional complexity.
Together, these award-winning expressions demonstrate that traditional mash bills, triple distillation and thoughtful maturation remain the foundation of some of the world's finest whiskeys, ensuring that Irish pot still whiskey continues to set a standard for elegance, character and craftsmanship.
Bib & Tucker has gained quite a following in the last decade because of its award-winning portfolio of whiskeys. Beginning this fall, Tennessee-based distillery will launch its first-ever bottled-in-bond whiskey. Not only does the new whiskey fit the criteria for a bottled-in-bond expression, but it’s matured twice as long as it needs to be.
Bib & Tucker 8-Year-Old Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon
If you’re trying to figure out your fall plans, on top of apple picking and leaf peeping, you should mark your calendar for September so you can grab a bottle of Bib & Tucker 8-Year-Old Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon. Following the guidelines of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, this new expression was aged in a federally bonded warehouse and bottled at 100 proof. But instead of being aged for 4 years, it was matured for 8 full years. Unlike most of its counterparts, this bottled-in-bond whiskey begins with a Tennessee high-rye mash bill.
According to Bib & Tucker, the result is a balanced, bold, memorable bourbon that begins with a nose of vanilla custard, oak, sweet cream, and wood spice. The palate is centered on notes of crème brûlée, fresh leather, hickory wood, dried apricot, and honeysuckle. The finish is long, lingering, warm, and ends with a mix of allspice and orange blossom. At 100-proof, this is a great choice for sipping neat, on the rocks, or with a splash or two of water to open up the aromas and flavors. It also won’t get lost in the shuffle of ingredients in your favorite cocktails.
“Something I’ve learned from my mentors in this industry is that, when it comes to blending whiskey, your job is to recognize when the whiskey is ready,” James Joseph, Apprentice Blender at Bib & Tucker, says.
“With our first Bottled-in-Bond release, I had the opportunity to work within a standard that’s been respected for generations, so every choice came back to the quality in the barrel and letting the flavors express themselves. It is a process I was taught early on: respect the tradition, trust the maturation process, and don’t take shortcuts.”
Where can I buy it?
Bib & Tucker 8-Year-Old Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon will be released at alcohol retailers throughout the US this September for the suggested retail price of $64.99 for a 750ml bottle. Google News(Scotch/Distillery)|原題:Retired farmer kept £750k whisky collection in converted pigsty - AOL.com

Retired farmer kept £750k whisky collection in converted pigsty
Mark Twain once quipped that while too much of anything is bad, “too much good whiskey is barely enough”.
So the Huckleberry Finn author would probably be turning in his grave at the news that a retired farmer is selling one of Britain’s largest collections of the liquor.
Bill Garratt has spent four decades amassing around 5,000 bottles of whisky, which he stores in a 100ft-long converted pigsty at his home in Ravensden, Bedfordshire.
The 81-year-old boasts a collection including rare bottles that date back to the 1800s, alongside thousands of pieces of whisky-related memorabilia.
It is being offered for sale with a guide price of £750,000.
Among Mr Garratt’s treasures are 1,800 single malts, 1,800 miniature bottles and around 500 blends, with some individual bottles worth more than £6,000. Their combined value prompted him to set up a state-of-the-art security system to ensure their safe keeping.
Mr Garratt said the collection started almost by accident, explaining: “A friend of mine gave me a whisky called Jolly Runner in 1982, and that started off the collecting.
“I liked whisky, but it just sort of happened – I stumbled into it. Now I’ve got more than 1,800 malts. Together with the miniatures, there’s got to be nearly 5,000 bottles in there.
“I’ve seen more expensive collections but I haven’t seen a bigger collection. It could be one of the most diverse collections.”
As the bottles multiplied, Mr Garratt’s wife began to lose patience with them taking over the family home.
He said: “I got to 1,000 bottles in the house and my wife was getting a bit fed up with it.
“We had old pigsties at the time, and I adjusted two of them. It’s all in a 100ft-long building now with the extension, and its only purpose is to house this collection.”
He said he enjoyed a dram three times a week, with his favourite whisky being an 18-year-old Macallan.
The most he had ever spent on a bottle was more than £6,000 for a Macallan Magnifico, which he believed could be worth significantly more today.
Other prized bottles included Macallan 26&frac23 fluid ounce bottles from 1937 and 1938, which can fetch up to £6,000 each.
His oldest bottle is a Choice Old Scotch Whisky produced by R Thorne and Sons Ltd in 1894, which he regards as “priceless” given the lack of information on it.
The collection also includes a Hanyu The Joker single malt worth around £5,000, a Macallan Diamond Jubilee special edition valued at up to £6,000 and the distinctive teardrop-shaped Mortlach 70, by Gordon and MacPhail.
Mr Garratt’s whisky memorabilia includes Johnnie Walker figures, paintings, pictures, ashtrays, wooden boxes and drinking glasses.
Despite still enjoying his collection, he admitted his age had persuaded him to cash in.
Mark Littler, a whisky broker handling the sale, said: “Most whisky collections are built around single malts. Bill’s collection is different – it tells the story of Scotch whisky itself. He has collected its entire history, rather than only its most fashionable names.
“Blends feature prominently, and rightly so. Without blended whisky, many malt distilleries would not have survived the twentieth century. A collection that leaves them out tells only half the story.”

The rare Mizunara oak cask was sourced directly from Japan. It was used to finish the Auchentoshan single malt over an initial four-month maturation period. The cask arrived at Duncan Taylor’s headquarters in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, in March after being exported directly from Japan.
Mizunara is renowned as one of the most challenging oak species to work with due to its porous nature. It is equally celebrated for producing complex notes of sandalwood and incense when used to mature whisky.
“The ongoing success of our Octave range gave us the opportunity to push the boundaries and experiment with new cask finishes,” said Ian Logan, senior spirits manager at Duncan Taylor. “Auchentoshan’s lighter, triple-distilled spirit, allowed the Mizunara oak to fully express its natural character and the results far exceeded our expectations.”
The Auchentoshan was distilled in October 2011. It matured for 14 years before spending four months in the Mizunara octave. Bottled at 52.1% ABV, the release has yielded just 76 bottles, making it an exceptionally limited edition.
According to the official notes from the brand, the whisky displayed notes of vanilla yoghurt, honey, ginger, gentle citrus and soft spice before octavation. Following its time in the Mizunara octave, those flavors evolved into creamy rice pudding, golden syrup, mandarin, cedarwood and a lingering ginger warmth.

“We started experimenting for this project and the Auchentoshan quickly stood out as the ideal match for the style of the cask,” Logan added. “The transformation has been remarkable and we’re delighted with the outcome. This is just the beginning of our exploration with Mizunara and we’re excited to see what other spirit styles work equally well with this exceptional wood.”
To mark the release, Duncan Taylor collaborated with Japanese photographer Kato Shu (FRPS). The images captured the bottle alongside a Mizunara oak in an ancient forest at the foothills of Mount Fuji, home to trees some more than 300 years old.
Further experimental finishes and new wood types are already in development and will be released later in the year. The Octave Auchentoshan 14-Year-Old Mizunara Cask Finish is available now.

Six years ago, ordering a peated Scotch whisky in an Indian bar meant explaining what ‘peated’ even was. Order one today, and the bartender fires back with a question of their own, Islay or Skye? That kind of chitchat has gone away, because the shelves are packed now and tout the iodine punch of Laphroaig 10, the velvety depth of Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg 10's citrus-laced intensity, Talisker 10's peppery sea spray, the gentler smoke of Bowmore 12, Caol Ila 12's crisp finesse, and Highland Park 12's heather-sweet Orkney character. Seven bottles, three island accents, one shared obsession with fire and peat, all legally imported and pourable in India today. Check out these 7 best imported peated Scotch whiskies in India along with their prices. These whiskies definitely deserve a place in your whisky bar or your next bar order.
Peated whisky gets its signature smoky flavour from peat, partially decomposed plant matter used to dry malted barley during the whisky-making process. The smoke infuses the grain with distinctive aromas that can range from medicinal and earthy to campfire, seaweed and sweet heather, depending on where the peat is sourced and how heavily it's used.
On Islay's windswept southern shore, Laphroaig 10 Year Old whisky pours like a walk through a smouldering bog: iodine, scorched seaweed and a medicinal jolt, softened by a whisper of honeyed sweetness underneath. Serious peat drinkers use it to test their nerve, and it converts most doubters for life. Neat, at room temperature, is how it earns its reputation.
Laphroaig 10 Year Old Whisky Price: Rs 4,800 to Rs 8,200 (approx.)
Sixteen patient years in oak turn Lagavulin's raw peat into something plush: dark chocolate, dried fig and a lick of sea salt behind the char. Many collectors quietly call Lagavulin 16 Year Old whisky, Islay's finest single malt, and one pour makes the case better than argument ever could.
Lagavulin 16 Year Old Whisky Price: Rs 8,500 to Rs 16,000 (approx.)
Purists gravitate here for good reason. Ardbeg throws enormous smoke without ever losing its malt sweetness, layering roasted espresso, cracked black pepper and a bright citrus snap that cuts clean through the char. Ardbeg 10 Year Old whisky rewards drinkers who want intensity without one-note bitterness.
Ardbeg 10 Year Old Whisky Price: Rs 8,300 to Rs 8,760 (approx.)
Skip Islay for the Isle of Skye and Talisker delivers something entirely its own: a peppery, briny bite riding alongside bonfire smoke and dried fruit, tasting faintly of standing on a cliff edge mid-gale.
Talisker 10 Year Old Whisky Price: Rs 4,000 - Rs 7,000 (approx.)
Newcomers wary of heavy peat should start here. Bowmore 12 balances lemon zest, honey and a soft, well-integrated smoke that never overwhelms, proving restraint can be its own kind of luxury.
Bowmore 12 Year Old Whisky Price: Rs 7,000 to Rs 7,300 (approx.)
Lighter-bodied than its Islay neighbours, Caol Ila 12 Year Old whisky trades brawn for finesse: crisp citrus, cut grass and a faintly oily, medicinal peat that lingers on the palate rather than shouting for attention. It rewards a slower, more attentive sip.
Caol Ila 12 Year Old Whisky Price: Rs 3,800 to Rs 5,800 (approx.)
Up in Orkney, peat comes from heather rather than moss, giving Highland Park 12 Year Old whisky a sweeter, more aromatic smoulder threaded with citrus and warm oak spice — proof peat carries more than one accent.
Highland Park 12 Year Old Whisky Price: Rs 7,500 (approx.)
All of these 7 best imported peated Scotch whiskies in India arrive through official import channels and sit on shelves at premium retailers and hotel bars in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Goa, though excise duties mean prices, and availability, shift noticeably by state.
The Highland region once again demonstrated why it remains one of Scotland's most diverse whisky-producing areas at the 2025 Global Spirits Masters. Stretching from the rugged west coast to the fertile eastern Highlands and encompassing the islands of Skye and Orkney, the region produces an extraordinary range of styles. This year's Master medal winners reflected that diversity, from Talisker's unmistakable maritime character to Glencadam's elegant, fruit-driven style and the exceptional value of Levenside. Together, they illustrate how Highland distilleries continue to balance regional identity with broad consumer appeal. Below are brief backgrounds on the top-ranked single malt Scotch whiskies from the 2026 Global Spirits Masters along with my tasting notes.
Levenside 10-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 40% ABV, 700 ml. Master Award
Produced exclusively for Coles, an Australian retailer, by Loch Lomond, this lightly peated Highland single malt is matured for a decade in ex-bourbon oak casks, featuring a soft, approachable style with classic orchard fruit and vanilla sweetness.
The whisky features aromas of fresh apple, pear and vanilla along with delicate honey and light oak notes. The palate is smooth and rounded, showcasing flavors of malt biscuits, caramel and ripe orchard fruits with a touch of baking spices. A clean, sweet, medium-length finish leaves lingering notes of vanilla and seasoned oak.
Talisker 10-Year-Old, 45.8% ABV, 700 ml. Master Award
The iconic Isle of Skye single malt remains one of Scotland's benchmark coastal whiskies, combining maritime freshness, peppery spice and restrained peat smoke in a beautifully balanced package.
Talisker whisky features aromas of sea spray, campfire smoke and citrus, layered with cracked black pepper and sweet malt. Rich and oily on the palate, it delivers flavors of smoky peat, briny coastal notes and fresh orchard fruit wrapped around a warming peppery spice. The finish is long, smoky and distinctly maritime, with lingering notes of salinity and subtle peat.
Glencadam 18-Year-Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 46% ABV, 700 ml. Master Award
Matured in carefully selected American oak casks, this elegant Highland malt exemplifies Glencadam's unpeated house style, producing exceptional refinement and complexity.
The whisky features aromas of honey, baked apples and vanilla, complemented by toasted almonds and delicate floral notes. The palate is silky and beautifully balanced, showcasing flavors of crème brûlée, ripe peaches, citrus and subtle oak and wood spices. The finish is long, creamy and elegant, with lingering notes of vanilla and orchard fruit.
Glencadam American Oak Reserve Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, NAS, 40% ABV, 700 ml. Master Award
Fully matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks, this very approachable expression highlights Glencadam's naturally fruity, creamy character with bright vanilla sweetness and excellent balance.
The whisky features aromas of vanilla, coconut and fresh pear, combined with citrus blossom and honey. It’s light and creamy on the palate, offering flavors of sweet malt, ripe orchard fruits, butterscotch and toasted oak. The finish is long, sweet and fresh with lingering notes of vanilla and a delicate touch of wood spices.
Although smaller in number than some other regional categories, the Highland Master medal winners demonstrated the breadth of styles that define Scotland's largest whisky region. Talisker continues to define the benchmark for maritime, lightly peated whisky, while Glencadam's pair of award winners highlight the elegance and finesse that unpeated Highland malts can achieve. Levenside completes the line-up with an accessible, well-crafted expression that offers excellent value.
Collectively, these whiskies reaffirm the Highlands' ability to produce single malts that appeal to both novices and veteran enthusiasts while maintaining the distinctive regional character that has made Highland Scotch one of the world's most admired whisky styles.

蘇格蘭獨立裝瓶商 Duncan Taylor 推出限量版 Octave Auchentoshan 14 Year Old Mizunara Cask(52.1% ABV),這是該品牌首款在日本水楢(Mizunara)橡木桶中完成熟成的威士忌。

Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky has announced the launch of the latest release in its limited-edition Octave range – its first to be finished in Japanese Mizunara oak casks.
The Octave Auchentoshan 14 Year Old Mizunara Cask (52.1% ABV) is a triple-distilled single malt Scotch whisky, that was initially matured in ex-Bourbon casks, before being finished for four months in a Mizunara oak octave cask.
The Mizunara cask arrived at Duncan Taylor’s headquarters in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, in March, having been exported directly from Japan. Although Mizunara is renowned as one of the most challenging oak species to work with due to its porous nature, it is equally celebrated for producing exceptionally elegant and complex whisky finishes.
Before octavation, the whisky displayed notes of vanilla yoghurt, honey, ginger, gentle citrus and soft spice. Following its time in the Mizunara octave cask, those flavours evolved into creamy rice pudding, golden syrup, mandarin, cedarwood and a lingering ginger warmth.
To mark the release, Duncan Taylor collaborated with Japanese photographer Kato Shu (FRPS) to photograph the bottle alongside a Mizunara oak in an ancient forest at the foothills of Mount Fuji. While much of Japan’s native woodland has changed since the Edo period, this remarkable landscape remains home to towering Mizunara oaks, some more than 300 years old, which continue to thrive against the odds.
Duncan Taylor has been refining the Octave maturation technique since the 1970s. At that time, octave casks were primarily used to train coopers in the construction of larger Sherry butts and were not considered suitable for maturing whisky. However, experimentation revealed that these smaller casks could produce exceptional whiskies by providing a second, accelerated maturation.
Last month, Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky announced plans to significantly expand its Octave range this year in response to growing demand. Nearly 1,000 new Octave releases will be brought to market, more than doubling the company’s current inventory.
Commenting on the launch, Ian Logan, Senior Spirits Manager at Duncan Taylor, said: “The ongoing success of our Octave range has given us the opportunity to push the boundaries and experiment with new cask finishes. Auchentoshan’s lighter, triple-distilled spirit allowed the Mizunara oak to fully express its natural character, and the results far exceeded our expectations.”
Ian, added: “When we began experimenting for this project, the Auchentoshan quickly stood out as the ideal match for the style of cask. The transformation has been remarkable, and we’re delighted with the outcome. This is just the beginning of our exploration with Mizunara, and we’re excited to discover which other spirit styles work equally well with this exceptional wood.”
Limited to just 76 bottles, The Octave Auchentoshan 14 Year Old Mizunara Cask is now available exclusively from The Spirits Embassy, for a RRP of £125.00.

The whisky features aromas of campfire smoke, lemon zest and vanilla, combined with ripe orchard fruits and sweet malt. It’s rich, creamy and mouth-filling on the palate, delivering layers of smoky peat, caramel, citrus, dark honey and warming spices. The finish is long, smoky and beautifully balanced, leaving lingering notes of sweet oak and coastal peat smoke.
Lagavulin 16-Year-Old, 43% ABV, 700 ml. Master Medal

This year's Master medal winners demonstrate that Campbeltown and Islay continue to punch well above their weight in the Scotch whisky world. Glen Scotia's impressive showing confirms the distillery's growing reputation for producing refined maritime-seasoned malts with exceptional balance. Kilchoman and Lagavulin, on the other hand, reinforce Islay's status as the home of some of Scotland's most expressive peated whiskies. Whether driven by elegant coastal influence, bold smoke or careful cask maturation, these award-winning expressions showcase the distinctive identities of two regions that remain among the most exciting and characterful in the Scotch whisky landscape.

Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky has further expanded its award-winning Octave portfolio, with the introduction of its first-ever Mizunara oak cask finish.
The launch marks another milestone in the company's continued innovation within this range.
Directly sourced from Japan, the rare Mizunara oak cask was chosen to finish a triple-distilled Auchentoshan single malt over an initial four-month maturation period. The result is a distinctive Octave whisky that showcases the unique influence of this highly prized Japanese oak.
Ian Logan, Senior Spirits Manager at Duncan Taylor, said: "The ongoing success of our Octave range gave us the opportunity to push the boundaries and experiment with new cask finishes. Auchentoshan's lighter, triple-distilled spirit, allowed the Mizunara oak to fully express its natural character and the results far exceeded our expectations."
The Mizunara cask arrived at Duncan Taylor's headquarters in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, in March after being exported directly from Japan. Although Mizunara is renowned for being one of the most challenging oak species to work with due to its porous nature, it is equally celebrated for producing exceptionally elegant and complex whisky finishes.
Distilled in October 2011, the Auchentoshan matured for 14 years before spending four months in the Mizunara octave. Bottled at 52.1% ABV, the whisky has developed a rich and distinctive flavour profile.
Before octavation, the whisky displayed notes of vanilla yoghurt, honey, ginger, gentle citrus and soft spice. Following its time in the Mizunara octave, those flavours evolved into creamy rice pudding, golden syrup, mandarin, cedarwood and a lingering ginger warmth.
Logan added: "We started experimenting for this project and the Auchentoshan quickly stood out as the ideal match for the style of the cask. The transformation has been remarkable and we're delighted with the outcome. This is just the beginning of our exploration with Mizunara and we're excited to see what other spirit styles work equally well with this exceptional wood."

While much of Japan's native woodland has changed since the Edo period, this remarkable landscape remains home to towering Mizunara oaks, some more than 300 years old, which continue to thrive against the odds.
The Octave Mizunara finish has yielded just 76 bottles, making it an exceptionally limited release. It will be available exclusively through The Spirits Embassy, priced at £125.
There is more to come from Duncan Taylor's innovative Octave range, not just with Mizunara casks but also further experimental finishes and new wood types are already in development and will be released later in the year.

Lord Owl Shares New Single “Whiskey From the Mountain”
Boise, Idaho rock trio Lord Owl just dropped their brand new single “Whiskey From the Mountain” and it’s the band’s first release since their 2023 album The Paper Street House. Inspired by an actual hike through the Idaho mountains, the song tells a story about friendship, trudging through tough times, and making the best of an unexpected situation.
The concept for the track came from a time when the band took a trip up a mountain where they had planned to celebrate at the summit with a stashed bottle of whiskey. Instead, they found it had been stolen, emptied, and smashed. That moment turned into a reminder that plans don’t always go as planned and the people you’re with matter more than the destination.
Singer Ryan Gratton sums it up perfectly in his words, “It’s a story about friendship, camaraderie, and overcoming challenges together.”
“It’s a story about friendship, camaraderie, and overcoming challenges together.”
That story comes to life through lines like, “On a hard fought journey to the summit, a friend and I sang a drinking song,” before breaking into the singalong chorus, “Give us whiskey from the mountain…and then we’ll ramble on.” The lyrics capture the difficult aspects of a hike while driving home the song’s core message of friendship and perseverance.
Gratton says the song is about more than hiking. “It’s a song about being able to power through even the toughest times as long as you have good friends along with you.”
Made up of Ryan Gratton, Jesse Wever, and Jon O’Donald, Lord Owl continues to blend hard rock, grunge, and Americana into what they call “mountain rock”, creating songs inspired by life in the Northwest.
Listen to the band’s new single “Whiskey From the Mountain,” now streaming everywhere.

Catch free bluegrass from Whiskey Mash Band @ Folk Alliance offices this Friday

While its annual conference won’t be back in town until 2028, it’s worth remembering Folk Alliance International is still based in Kansas City and making things happen locally. One of those things is their regular First Friday free shows at the organization’s office, which have been going on since 2018.
This Friday, August 7, at 6 p.m. you can check out KC bluegrass quartet Whiskey Mash Band. They’re supporting last year’s Good Timin’ Bluegrass Band, which they describe as songs that explore themes of “midwest lifestyle, love, and travel,” which is pretty perfect subject matter, given they head out of town for a two-week international tour of Ireland and the UK later this month.
Folk Alliance Executive Director Jennifer Roe says of these shows, “One of my favorite things about First Fridays is seeing our space filled with neighbors, members, and music lovers who may be discovering Folk Alliance International for the first time. These evenings remind us that folk music has always been about bringing people together, while also giving us the opportunity to support outstanding regional artists and celebrate Kansas City’s vibrant music community year-round.”
