How do you capture nearly 200 years of whisky history in a single bottle?
Glenfarclas makes a remarkable attempt with the new Glenfarclas 190 whisky. For this exclusive single malt, no fewer than 78 casks from five different decades were brought together. The result is a whisky that lets the distillery’s history trickle into your glass, drop by drop.
Glenfarclas 190 has been released to celebrate the Scotch distillery’s 190th anniversary. It’s the final chapter of the Anniversary Trilogy, following the Glenfarclas 175 and Glenfarclas 185.
78 Speyside casks from five decades
The whisky blends not only liquids from different decades, but also distinct house styles from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and 2000s. Distillery manager Callum Fraser and managing director Douglas Belford combed through the vast stock of casks in the Glenfarclas warehouses. In the end, they hand-selected 78 different casks.
The whisky in these casks spans five decades and thus various ages. As a result, Glenfarclas 190 carries aromas and flavors from multiple eras of the distillery.
According to Fraser, casks from the 1970s contribute predominantly fruity notes. Whisky from the 1980s and 1990s delivers the renowned rich sherry influence of Glenfarclas. The casks from the 2000s add toffee and caramel tones.
What does Glenfarclas 190 taste like?
Official tasting notes describe Glenfarclas 190 as full-bodied, smooth, and velvety. Expect green apples, sherry, spiced Christmas cake, dark chocolate, and fresh tobacco. See the full tasting notes below:
- Nose: Green apples, rich sherry notes, toffee and caramel, with a gentle spice.
- Palate: Full, soft and velvety with sherry sweetness, spiced Christmas cake, ripe fruit and dark chocolate.
- Finish: Long and warming, with dark chocolate, fresh tobacco and lingering spice.
The anniversary bottling is filled at 51.4% ABV. That figure isn’t arbitrary: it corresponds to 90 British proof, the old UK system once used to state alcohol strength.
Glenfarclas used this system during the first 154 years of its existence, making the ABV a direct nod to the distillery’s long history.

In “The Odyssey,” a weary, storm-swept traveler explores the reaches of the known world on a quest to reunite with his queen named Penelope.
Last Tuesday, a bearded, cerebral traveler who’s been exploring every reach of the whiskey world continued a quest to host the grandest spirit-and-food pairing dinners in California – and did that with a bourbon called Penelope.
South of the Sutter farming hamlet of Robbins, over the Sacramento River and 15 miles beyond Knight’s Landing, Patrick Redmond has been unveiling his elaborate whiskey society dinners since 2017. Even by then, his establishment – Father Paddy’s Public House – was making a name for itself. Anchored in a 123-year-old Woodland bank, Father Paddy’s quickly became lauded for its “Whiskey Vault,” a steel-and-marble fortified fallout shelter where Redmond’s gathered more than 500 whiskeys from around the globe. ‘The Vault’ has given Scotch, bourbon and rye-lovers the ability to take their palates to international destinations without even needing a passport. Meanwhile, Redmond’s talent for explaining the art, science and alchemy of distilled grains in a glass has earned him the unofficial moniker, ‘the Whiskey Professor.’
But from Sutter County to the Berryessa Highlands, unapologetic foodies have also been converging on Redmond’s stylish pub. That’s because he made sure to assemble a talented kitchen team that could elevate Celtic staples like Fish and Chips, Shepherd’s Pie, Bangers and Mash, and corned beef and cabbage with top ingredients and executional flare. Once it became clear that his chefs were punching above Woodland’s weight, Redmond issued them another ambitious challenge: It took of the form of his quarterly whiskey society dinners.
The Whiskey Professor wanted each event to highlight a different spirit brand and its various expressions, and do it through culinary creations that few would have thought of. In the coming seasons, those who attended would get dishes of veal sweetbreads, celery root puree and Port demi-grace paired with a dram of Scotch called Glendronach’s Ode to the Valley. They’d try clams in whiskey broth with toasted salted butter and fresh baked baguettes augmented by Method & Madness’s single-pot still Irish whiskey that’s barreled in chestnut casks. They’d have desserts of Hummingbird Cake and pastries with a special coconut creamsicle topping and brushing of Honey Dew Whiskey, which was paired with a glass of Garrison Brothers “Lady Bird” Bourbon from Texas. The groundbreaking California chef Jeremiah Tower has compared reading some dinner menus to reading literature, and Redmond and his own head chef – Justin Severson – seem to have a similar sensibility.
On Tuesday night, another one of those semi-poetic menus was being revealed around Penelope Bourbon. The brand was founded in 2018 by Mike Paladini and Danny Polise, two entrepreneurs from New Jersey who were diehard whiskey connoisseurs. Penelope is the name of Mike’s daughter. The whiskey itself is made in partnership with MGP and produced at its historic Lawrenceburg, Indiana distillery, which has been around since1847.
The first dish of the night, which at least one Sutter County resident had drifted in from Robbins for, included popcorn fried rock shrimp with a Nicoise salad topped in Rosé wine and bourbon vinaigrette. It would be paired with Penelope’s French-style bourbon that’s finished in Rosé wine casks.
Ian Friedman, a national brand ambassador for Penelope, was on-hand to explain the specific whiskey people were starting to lift over their salads.
“There is no other company in the bourbon industry that’s using Rosé casks to finish whiskey,” Friedman told the diners. “The wine they use is from the Languedoc Region of the Rhone Valley in Southern France. They put our four-grain bourbon in this at 94-proof, at a minimum of four-years old. Then they finish it anywhere from four weeks to two months in these rested Rosé casks. You get some creaminess. You get some bright fruit. You get the sweetness of the bourbon. And then there’s a little bit of a grab on the back of your tongue.”
The rock shrimp this would be paired with had a beautiful butteriness to their soft breading, which then sang in the mouth when followed by the elegant brightness of Penelope Rosé venture.
The next dish was Pheasant Roulade, with pesto provolone and prosciutto, topped on a potato and parsnip puree. It was paired with Penelope’s 10-year Private Select Bourbon. Guests from table to table appeared to think this was a match made in Heaven. The writer of this piece certainly did.
Soon the main dish came out. It was plates stacked with smoked natural full spareribs, accompanied by southern-style collard greens, corn fritters and Delta corn on the cob. It was being served with Penelope’s barrel-proof Straight Bourbon Whiskey that’s aged for 7 years. Redmond mentioned that this pairing was inspired by a class he’d taken on pit master Aaron Franklin’s barbecue techniques.
“So salt, and pepper, and paprika and mustards – then hours in the smoker,” Redmond mused. “Aaron Franklin uses apple cider vinegar, but I thought that tasted sour, so we modified that with apple juice, and modified his percentages to 50-50 on the salt and pepper … But this is your crescendo.”
“It’s perfect!” one of the guests declared from his table.
But the tasting wasn’t over. Redmond’s daughter, the pastry perfectionist Chef Anya, then brought out a gorgeous Spiced Baked Alaska, which was complimented “Penelope Havana,” a straight bourbon finished in both maple syrup and rum barrels. Discovering the softness of the former and semi-sweet multi-dimensionality of the latter, some dinner-goers were beside themselves. “This is the best pairing ever!” one suddenly shouted over the din.
His sentiment cut through.
And so did everything Redmond’s kitchen team did that night.

I get excited any time Old Forester releases a new whiskey. So, I was pretty stoked when I heard that the renowned Kentucky-based brand recently announced a new limited-edition expression to be added to its award-winning portfolio. It's called Triple Char Kentucky Straight Bourbon, and it's also the newest addition to its popular 117 Series.
Old Forester Triple Char Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Not only is this limited-edition release the newest addition to its 117 Series of whiskeys, but it's also the first whiskey from the brand to be completely distilled at the Old Forester Distillery on Louisville's historic Main Street. Aged in barrels charred three times longer than traditional Old Forester bourbon, this whiskey is known for its multi-layered, rich aromas and flavors. Best enjoyed neat or on the rocks, this is guaranteed to be your new favorite summer campfire whiskey.
According to the brand, the result is a 115-proof whiskey that begins with a nose of pecan praline, ripe apples, stone fruit, cardamom, honeysuckle, and fresh leather. From there, the palate is centered on notes of apple cobbler, cinnamon candy, cracked black pepper, and charred oaky wood. The finish is long, warm, and ends with fresh leather, licorice candy, and oak.
"Triple Char is an exciting new chapter for Old Forester and our 117 Series," Assistant Master Distiller Caleb Trigo says.
"Not only is it the first expression made entirely from whiskey distilled at our Main Street distillery, but the extended barrel char allows us to showcase that spirit in a completely new way. The result is a bourbon with remarkable richness, intense spice and a depth of oak that demonstrates both our heritage and our continued spirit of innovation."
Where can I buy it?
Old Forester Triple Char Kentucky Straight Bourbon isn't the type of whiskey you can grab at your local liquor store on the way home from work. Instead, this limited-edition bourbon whiskey is currently available exclusively at the Old Forester Distillery (located at 119 W Main St, Louisville, KY 40202) and at select whiskey retailers in Kentucky for the suggested retail price of $64.99 for a 375ml bottle. I decided to put myself through something a little uncomfortable this week. I lined up five Canadian ryes, scrambled the glasses so I genuinely had no idea what was what, and tasted them semi-blind with one simple goal: to find out which one I liked best. No agenda, no favouritism, just the whisky in the glass. And honestly? By the end of it I kept asking myself why I did this to myself, because every single one of them was delicious.
The lineup was almost entirely older Canadian rye, with one exception. I threw in the Sons of Vancouver, a four-year-old finished in Caribbean rum casks, because I had it on hand to review.
The rest were more seasoned: the Alberta Premium 10-Year-Old Cask Strength at a punchy 67 percent, the John Sleeman and Sons Pedro Ximenez finished six-year-old, a nine-year-old from Baldur’s out of Saskatchewan, and the 10-year-old expression from Dillon’s, aged entirely in Ontario oak.
Five glasses, five very different stories.
What struck me first was how well these whiskies masked their true nature. The Sons of Vancouver drinks far older than four years, and that rum finish works beautifully with their style.
The Sleeman PX finish shocked me most of all, because it neither smelled nor tasted like there was any Pedro Ximenez influence in there at all, yet it landed at a superb 87.

The Dillon’s, sitting in Ontario oak I suspect very few distilleries are even using, drank nowhere near its 54.1% strength. Smooth, composed, and genuinely impressive.
Then came the reveals, and a couple of humbling moments. I got two of them wrong, which I was actually happy about, because it reminded me these whiskies keep you honest. In the end, the Baldur’s nine-year-old took first place, edging out the field with an 88. I had wrongly assumed its 3% wheat was weighing it down, when in reality it was carrying the whole thing beautifully.
The real value story, though, was the Alberta Premium 10. A 10-year-old cask strength whisky at 52 dollars on sale is almost unheard of, and with a splash of water it could genuinely challenge everything else on the table.
The bigger takeaway is this: I am incredibly proud of where Canadian whisky sits right now, and prouder still of what these rye producers are doing. Every one of these is worth buying. So here is my question to you: which Canadian rye has surprised you the most lately, and is your palate as susceptible to certain notes as mine is?

Old Overholt has released its Extra Aged Cask Strength 11-Year-Old 2026 Edition, an unfiltered, cask-strength American rye. The whiskey was distilled and barreled in spring 2014 and laid down in three warehouses in Clermont, Kentucky.
The release marks the fourth annual edition of the Extra Aged Cask Strength line, and forms part of a wider refocus on the Overholt brand in recent years.
That renewed attention has been evident through the launch of A. Overholt and the Extra Aged Cask Strength brand extension.
The new expression is bottled at 125.6 proof and carries a suggested retail price of $109.99 for a 750ml bottle.
According to the brand, the expression “delivers a distinct and rich liquid, full of balanced rye spice flavor complimented by notes of vanilla, caramel, and charred oak complexity.”
The rye was aged across three distinct warehouses in Clermont “to ensure incredible consistency and gentle flavor mellowing over time.” It is released once a year in small quantities.

On the nose, the brand notes an aroma that is “bold, vanilla and baking spice underpinned with hints of tobacco.” The palate carries “allspice, sweet vanilla and caramel, charred oak,” with a finish described as “pleasant, full bodied with lingering notes of black pepper.”
Old Overholt is one of the oldest continuously maintained whiskey brands in the United States, with roots dating back to 1810. It is now owned by Suntory Global Spirits.
Rye whiskey has seen renewed interest among American consumers in recent years, driving a number of premium and limited-edition releases from major producers.

Inside The Williams Casanegra Gamble
When brothers Cristian and Gabriel Williams began building a whisky distillery in Mendoza, Argentina in 2013, they had no established regional model to follow—and no guarantee that the project would ever produce a sellable bottle. More than a decade later, Williams Casanegra Distillery is releasing limited quantities of single malt shaped by high-altitude barley, glacier-fed water, historic equipment and an unusually stubborn commitment to patience.
The brothers grew up around their family’s vineyards, but whisky also formed part of their inheritance. Their grandfather had been sent by the British Crown to work in the Andes' mining industry, leaving behind a taste for the spirit. Cristian and Gabriel eventually decided to create a new chapter in that family history, exchanging the expected path through Mendoza’s vineyards for the far less predictable challenge of producing whisky at the edge of the Andes.
The Casanegra Elements
They planted barley in the Uco Valley of the Andes Mountains, at elevations between approximately 1,500 and 2,500 meters, where strong sunlight, cold temperatures and dramatic shifts between day and night shape the crop. Water comes from Andean snow and glacier-fed waterways. The distillery also says it gathers native yeasts from its barley fields, using the surrounding environment to help define the whisky from its earliest stages.
Just as distinctive is the distillery itself, located in the Andean foothills, Luján de Cuyo, Las Compuertas. The brothers spent years constructing it with salvaged materials collected from century-old wineries, the Argentine railway and a former Cinzano facility. Cooking, fermentation and distillation equipment made largely from copper is more than a century old. A clay malting oven incorporates historic adobe bricks, while an in-house cooperage allows craftspeople to restore, toast, and maintain barrels on-site.
Casks previously used for regional bottlings give Casanegra access to maturation vessels that remain closely tied to Mendoza. Because the barrels can arrive freshly emptied, they retain aromatic and flavor compounds, and other releases have drawn on rare Cognac pipes, including French oak vessels dating to the 1960s. Case in point, the Résistance Collection ages in rare 1968 XXO Cognac pipes for ten years.
Time Is Casanegra’s Key Ingredient
But the project’s defining ingredient may be time. For years, the brothers tasted their whisky and decided against releasing it.
“Spending the entire day in the warehouse tasting whiskies and deciding not to release any because they’ll be better next year—and having that happen every single year,” Gabriel says, describing the experience of building the company together.
While the single malt matured, the brothers created Andina Compañía Destilería and developed other spirits, including The Perfumist, a London dry gin made with 53 botanicals. Those products allowed them to establish a broader spirits business while waiting for the whisky to reach the standard they had set.
Today, Cristian leads the commercial and financial side, while Gabriel oversees production and architecture. Major decisions remain shared, even when reaching agreement takes time. Gabriel says only his brother could have understood and supported “the crazy idea of devoting our entire lives to this project for over ten years without any financial return.”
Yet, Casanegra Andes Single Malt was named a finalist for Best Argentine Distillate at the 2026 Winexplorers Awards, an early indication of its growing visibility within Argentina’s spirits community.
Casanegra is now attempting something larger than producing an Argentine whisky. Through altitude, local ingredients, reclaimed materials, reused casks and long maturation, the brothers are defining what an Andean single malt might become—and proving that sometimes the most ambitious business strategy is refusing to rush.
As we’ve covered before, the James B. Beam Distilling Co., the home of Jim Beam bourbon, has been giving some of its budget whiskeys significant upgrades over the past few years. One of those that has gotten arguably the most attention is Old Overholt, and the latest example of this is the 2026 edition of the brand’s Extra Aged Cask Strength expression.
Old Overholt is best known as a budget rye whiskey that still manages to deliver a lot of flavor. It’s made from a 51 percent rye grain mashbill (or thereabouts), and works very well in cocktails. The brand originated as a Pennsylvania rye whiskey, something that Beam paid tribute to with the release of A. Overholt in 2024, a Monongahela-style rye made from a mashbill of 80 percent rye grain and 20 percent malted barley. Beam has owned Old Overholt since 1987, and for many years the core expression was a bottom shelf bottle that was still a favorite of many bartenders. In 2022, the whiskey had its proof raised from 80 to 86 and a four-year age statement was added to the label. In addition to that, a bottled-in-bond version joined the lineup and limited-edition age statements started being released.
The cask-strength versions showed up soon after that—the first was aged for 10 years, the second for 11, and last year’s was a 12-year-old whiskey. Number four brings the age statement back down to 11 years, while the proof jumps up to 125.6, which is the highest of the series so far (the first release was bottled at 121 proof, the second at 107.4 proof, and the third at 117 proof). According to the brand, the whiskey for this release was distilled and barreled in the spring of 2014 and aged in three separate warehouses on the Clermont campus in Kentucky (given that, this could have been a bottled-in-bond release, but of course the fact that it was bottled at cask strength negates that).
We asked the brand about the age statement fluctuations in the series, and heard back from Bradford Lawrence, global associate brand manager for Suntory Global Spirits. “For each release, our blending team searches across our warehouses to identify the barrels that best express the character of Old Overholt at a cask strength proof,” he told Robb Report. “The team has intentionally explored different ages, warehouse locations, and resulting cask-strength proofs to better understand how those variables shape the final flavor on each batch. While the age statements have varied across the first several releases, the objective has remained consistent: to select a distinctive parcel of mature rye whiskey that delivers the depth, balance, and character we want the release to represent.”
We did not receive a sample of this new whiskey to try yet, but the official tasting notes describe vanilla, baking spice, and tobacco aromas on the nose, followed by allspice, sweet vanilla, caramel, and charred oak on the palate, with notes of black pepper on the finish. Old Overholt Extra Aged Cask Strength 11YR is available starting this month at select retailers around the country (SRP $110).
Edinburgh-based whisky brand Wee Smoky has launched six premium canned cocktails, designed to challenge the perceptions of smoke and whisky cocktail culture.
Founder, Rory Gammell, spent the past six years on a mission to elevate cocktails by adding ‘a hint of smoke’. After traveling the world with his flagship liquid, Wee Smoky, a smoky whisky for mixing, he realised many people thought they didn’t like whisky, until they experienced it “in a perfect cocktail”.
After years of balancing smoke with other flavours, Gammell and his team have now created a Wee Smoky RTD range. Each flavour is bold, balanced and designed to appeal to all cocktail drinkers, even those who don’t think they like whisky.
Working with liquid development partner, Jack Sotti, previously crowned World Class Bartender of the Year, Wee Smoky has transformed six iconic cocktails into premium ready-to-drink serves, in a quest to prove that a hint of smoke can elevate almost any cocktail.
The range has four traditionally non-whisky cocktails: the Margarita, Salted Caramel, Espresso Martini, and Wee Smoky’s take on the Paloma, the Grape-fruit-arita, were crafted with the non-whisky drinker in mind. The Old Fashioned and Manhattan were created for the whisky fans.
Gammell said: “In consumer testing, so many people who swore they wouldn’t drink whisky really enjoyed our cocktails, saying they would order them at a bar. There is so much opportunity here because instead of turning away from smoke, people are excited about it.
“Smoke has traditionally been seen as intense. Whisky has traditionally been seen as intimidating. We believe both deserve a wider audience.
“Imagine finding out that your favourite Margarita, or indeed Paloma, turned out to be Scotch whisky-based. For me that’s what success would look like – playing our part in a broader perception shift of our category.”
The new Wee Smoky RTD range, which claims to be the first dedicated smoky whisky cocktail range of its kind, comes in a 10cl can format.
Wee Smoky was created in 2020 as a single-grain Scotch whisky specifically designed for mixing.
The Islay-based Laphroaig Distillery has announced that its recently launched collaborative release with cult actor Willem Dafoe, will be available in Global Travel Retail.
Laphroaig – Willem by Willem (53.7% ABV) is a 14 Year Old single malt Scotch whisky, initially matured in ex-Bourbon casks before being finished in Oloroso Sherry casks.
The release marks the latest chapter in Laphroaig’s partnership with cult actor Willem Dafoe, who became a Friend of Laphroaig last September to celebrate the unforgettable taste of the globally loved peated whisky. Dafoe selected the Willem by Willem expression alongside Laphroaig’s Senior Whisky Maker, Sarah Dowling. Rather than focusing on tasting notes and production methods, he chose the whisky that sparked his curiosity and delivered the most memorable tasting experience.
Inspired by the film industry’s “no notes” phrase – meaning a performance so confident and complete that it needs no direction – the launch deliberately excludes official tasting notes. Instead, fans around the world are invited to form their own interpretation of the whisky’s character.
Initially made available to Friends of Laphroaig members for pre-order in April, the release will first launch at London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 from August, before rolling out internationally.
Commenting on the whisky, Willem Dafoe, said: “It was a pleasure learning about each of the whiskies shortlisted to be ‘the one’. I made my final choice based on the whisky that evoked the most curiosity about its taste – something I still can’t quite put my finger on, but that’s half the fun. For me, when I sip Willem by Willem, I experience… you tell me. For all who drink it, I hope the whisky will inspire discussion.”
Sarah Dowling, Senior Whisky Maker at Laphroaig, added: “Our experience of whisky is so personal, from how we drink it – whether neat, with water or in a cocktail – to the different opinions on its taste. It was important to Willem and me that we selected a rich and complex spirit that is unmistakably Laphroaig, yet one that allows people to interpret and enjoy it in their own way. The whisky speaks for itself, and I look forward to hearing what it says to people around the world.”
Following the Heathrow Terminal 5 launch on August 1st, the roll-out of Laphroaig – Willem by Willem will continue this autumn across Singapore Changi Airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and Dubai International Airport. RRP: $142.00.

Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers (MSWD) will release its second bottling from Aberargie Distillery in September 2026 with a new limited series called Expressions. The series will debut with two single-varietal whiskies, the Laureate Edition and the Golden Promise Edition.
The bottlings were created to show how barley variety influences the flavor and character of single malt Scotch whisky.
The distillery’s Inaugural bottling sold out. It was produced using a mash bill of 52% Golden Promise and 48% Laureate barley.
For the new series, the two barley varieties have been bottled separately. The whiskies will be presented side by side, allowing drinkers to compare the characteristics of each.
The release is structured around two pillars of Aberargie’s whisky-making philosophy. Future releases will examine individual elements of the production process.
The Laureate Edition is distilled from 100% Laureate barley. It was matured in 32% first-fill bourbon casks and 68% first-fill sherry casks. Bottled at 48.2% ABV, its official tasting notes from the brand include candied orange peel, dried fruit, and crisp orchard fruit, followed by a honeyed finish.

The Golden Promise Edition is distilled from 100% Golden Promise barley. It was matured in 68% first-fill bourbon and 32% first-fill sherry casks. Also bottled at 48.2% ABV, the whisky offers official notes from the brand of buttery pastry, stewed apples, brown sugar, and baking spices.
Graeme Mackeddie, head of distilling at Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, said: “The success of our Inaugural release demonstrated the strength of interest in Aberargie and our barley-to-bottle approach. Expressions will allow us to examine the individual factors that shape our whisky and share the results directly with consumers.”
Mackeddie continued: “Barley is fundamental to Scotch whisky production, but its contribution to flavour is often overshadowed by maturation. By bottling Laureate and Golden Promise separately and presenting the whiskies side by side, we can demonstrate the distinctive character of each variety. Laureate reflects the barley commonly grown and used today, while Golden Promise has an important place in Scotch whisky’s history.”
Aberargie operates a barley-to-bottle production model. Both varieties are grown on family-owned farms. MSWD oversees distillation, maturation, and bottling.

Edinburgh-based whisky brand Wee Smoky has launched a range of six premium ready-to-drink (RTD) canned cocktails built around smoky Scotch whisky. The 100ml cans are available to UK customers via weesmoky.com, with the first cans dispatched on Monday 3 August.
The range features four traditionally non-whisky cocktails and two whisky classics. The “non-whisky” serves, now with whisky, are a Margarita, a Salted Caramel, an Espresso Martini, and the Grape-fruit-arita, Wee Smoky’s take on the Paloma. The Old Fashioned and Manhattan were created for whisky fans.
Founder Rory Gammell developed the range over six years after touring the world with the brand’s flagship whisky for mixing.
“Smoke has traditionally been seen as intense. Whisky has traditionally been seen as intimidating. We believe both deserve a wider audience,” Gammell said. “Imagine finding out that your favourite Margarita, or indeed Paloma, turned out to be Scotch whisky-based. For me that’s what success would look like – playing our part in a broader perception shift of our category.”
The cocktails were developed with Jack Sotti, previously crowned World Class Bartender of the Year and Wee Smoky’s Liquid Development Partner.
“The goal was never simply to put whisky into a can – it was to create properly balanced cocktails that deliver the flavour and experience you would expect from a great bar serve,” Sotti said.

Gammell said early consumer testing was positive. “So many people who swore they wouldn’t drink whisky really enjoyed our cocktails.”
The brand cites the global peated whisky market as worth $8.2 billion, with the RTD cocktails market forecast to reach $10.7bn globally by 2033. Gammell believes the “smoky segment” of RTDs could be worth over $1bn within 10 years.
The range has secured distribution with specialist wholesaler Select Drams, with talks underway in North America and Australia.
“Wee Smoky stood out because it is genuinely different,” said Aileen Connery, director at Select Drams.
Founded in 2020, Wee Smoky was created as a single-grain Scotch whisky for mixing, with trademarks now registered in over 40 countries.
The cans range from 17% ABV to 32.1% ABV.

House of Hazelwood has announced the launch of a new limited-edition release in its Legacy Collection.
House of Hazelwood Calm Waters 1992 (52.1% ABV) is a blended malt Scotch whisky distilled in 1992. Crafted from a marriage of Speyside single malts, it was matured in a combination of first-fill and refill Sherry butts.
The House of Hazelwood Legacy Collection celebrates rare and remarkable parcels from the Gordon family’s extensive inventory, with each whisky selected not only for its quality but also for the story it tells of time, place and craftsmanship.
Inspired by the River Spey, which winds through the heart of Scotland’s most celebrated whisky region, Calm Waters reflects a defining duality: apparent tranquillity paired with hidden power. Much like the river itself, the whisky is said to offer an experience that is both graceful and profoundly complex.
House of Hazelwood Calm Waters 1992 is said to showcase the influence of extended maturation in Sherry casks, where time has drawn out layers of richness, herbal complexity and textural depth. The whisky develops with precision and poise, revealing a character that is at once indulgent and quietly powerful.
The latest release is said to deliver rich, aromatic notes, opening with treacle toffee and liquorice, underpinned by a complex herbal framework. Subtle hints of fennel and linseed add freshness and lift, while the palate is described as full-bodied and richly textured, delivering impressive weight and intensity. A mouth-coating character emerges, balancing sweet, dark flavours with an evolving herbal depth.
Commenting on the launch, Jonathan Gibson, Director of House of Hazelwood, said: “Calm Waters is a perfect reflection of the quiet strength that defines so many of the whiskies within our inventory – a spirit that evolves gently yet reveals remarkable depth over time. It is a testament to both the character of Speyside malts and our enduring philosophy that whisky is ready only when it’s ready.”
Limited to 297 bottles, House of Hazelwood Calm Waters 1992, is available now from houseofhazelwood.com for a RRP of £950.00.

Artisanal Spirits Company, who own the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), have introduced their selection of casks for 2026. The private cask programme offers a range of exceptional ready to bottle casks handpicked for discerning collectors.
This marks the second year of the programme from owners of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), and Artisan Casks joins an increasing number of similar whole cask bottling experiences pitched at the discerning, high net worth collector. I spoke with Artisan Spirits to find out what they’re doing differently from some of the others. And, to decide whether the SMWS members should be annoyed.
What Is Artisan Casks?
Artisan Casks is a private cask ownership programme set up in 2025 to serve high net worth whisky fans who want to own—and eventually bottle—their own whisky from some of the most prestigious distilleries in Scotland.
“As a scotch industry player that is fully independent, well established and respected, the Artisanal Spirits Company can provide a full portfolio taken from more than 100 single malt scotch whisky distilleries,” explains James Mackay, Private Client Director, The Artisanal Spirits Company, over an email to discuss the new programme.
While it is owned by the same company that owns the SMWS, Artisan Casks is distinct from the SMWS’s own cask programme. Casks purchased through Artisan are already mature and selected because they’re ready for bottling, they also come with their full distillery names rather than the classic SMWS numbers, and several ownership “experiences” as well.
We have seen more direct to the public cask programmes opening over the last few years. This offering joins the likes of Diageo’s Casks of Distinction programme and the Chivas Vault because of the age of the casks and the breadth of distilleries available. And it’s an impressive lineup.
What’s On Offer?
The selection this year is another impressive selection of casks from the likes of Macallan, Bowmore, Laphroaig and Caol Ila, as well as casks of single grain and a “teaspooned” blended malt intriguingly named “Speyside Symphony.”
This year Artisan Casks have decided not to release prices for each of their casks following feedback from their customers. Previous offerings have ranged to a £600,000 Macallan 1993 and this year they have shared a couple of examples, including Mortlach 1991 at £133,000 and Laphroaig 1995 at £83,000.
Always Single Casks
One aspect of this programme that I do think stands out from other offerings stems from the very nature of Artisan Spirits and the SMWS. All the casks in their inventory have always been intended to end up as a single cask release. That is quite different from the Diageo style Casks of Distinction, where exceptional casks are “found” in their inventory and put to one side.
Because the casks offered through Artisanal Spirits are from the same maturation archives as the SMWS, the single cask endpoint has always been taken into account.
“Artisanal Spirits Company is focused on maturing single casks to be bottled individually, rather than for the purpose of vatting them into single malts or blends,” explains Mackay. “Our raison d’etre is to skillfully guide each cask to the peak of its potential. Where the whisky can be elevated through changing the cask then no expense is spared in doing so.”
I do feel that that kind of attention to detail is something that high end whisky collectors are increasingly looking for. The additional experiences are interesting too, but other companies offer experiences and a range of distilleries too. For me it is the concept of “intended for a single cask since the cask was filled” where Artisan Casks really stands out.
As a cask broker myself I understand—and have explained to customers both buying and selling casks—that whisky in a cask can be moved to another cask to improve flavours, colours, and commerciality. However there is still a reluctance that I think comes from a lack of understanding of the intricacies of actively managing the maturation of whisky.
I also reached out to Mark Reynier, renowned whisky expert and distillery founder, who currently includes cask maturation consultant in his extensive list of skills, to get his opinion on the offering. “What would make this genuinely intriguing, I think, is a little more creativity. With greater diversity of wood at their disposal, they could be far more adventurous with the assemblages.”
Reynier makes a fair point and it all depends on which side of the fence you’re viewing this from. If you want maximum creativity and diversity in the wood, then yes, a more adventurous approach to the assemblages would appeal. If what you’re after is a cask that’s a perfect microcosm of exactly what this type of whisky should be, then purity is the point.
Should SMWS Members Be Angry?
The SMWS is an independent bottler owned by The Artisanal Spirits Company. The SMWS exclusively bottles single cask whiskies and other spirits, and you generally have to be a paid member to get the chance to buy most releases.
One question I did have for Mackay was whether the SMWS members had reason to be annoyed that, despite paying for access, they were still losing some of the best casks from Artisanal’s inventory?
“There’s plenty of casks to go around!” Mackay assured me and SMWS drinkers.
He added, “the outstanding cask stock that Artisanal Spirits Company has built up over the past 40 years is strong enough to ensure that SMWS supply will be unaffected, even after the handful of casks we select for Artisan Casks each year.”
But it does crack open a bigger question about how these cask programmes talk to their two very different audiences.
Whether it's this programme or the ones from Diageo, Dalmore, Glenrothes, Macallan or Chivas, the message to high net worth clients seems to be, “hey we saved the best casks for you.” Whereas the message to their everyday drinkers—who arguably pay the bills—is, “don’t worry it doesn’t affect what we offer you.”
However, recently I also spoke with a number of independent bottlers who are increasingly moving away from single cask releases precisely because it has a limiting effect on their ability to produce the best core ranges for their everyday drinkers. Which is to say, I’m definitely not saying don’t offer cask programmes; they’re a great way to create and enjoy a completely unique whisky that is entirely yours. But perhaps there is a balance to be had in the way things are communicated.
Mark Reynier also added: “I can understand the commercial imperative [for whisky cask programmes]. They may need to valorise their inventory, and it is easy to imagine an accountant viewing the sale of individual casks as the most obvious route. But perhaps a more dynamic and creative approach to building distinctive, compelling bottlings could revitalise the existing customer base, attract a new audience and encourage established drinkers to explore beyond their usual preferences.”
Whisky Versus Wine?
I think one of the things whisky casks have as a significant draw is that each one is completely unique.
With wine, for example, there is just one Château Lafite each year; each barrel from that vintage is vatted together to create a homogenous single moment of perfection.
With whisky, the majority of releases are created by distilleries or blenders actively combining different cask types and ages to produce multiple releases that taste consistent year to year. This is the beauty of Johnnie Walker Black or The Macallan 18 year old.
This where owning a cask of whisky differs from wine. And where whisky casks separate from a casual or growing interest in mainstream whisky bottles.
Each cask of whisky is unique, and can be personalized further through cask type and age. That means, owning a cask of whisky that is deemed perfect for its type, style and age, and then having that bottled, is one of the most exclusive things a whisky lover can do.

Wee Smoky RTDs aim to shift whisky perceptions
Rory Gammell, founder of whisky brand Wee Smoky, has partnered with bartender and drinks consultant Jack Sotti to create a line of ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails.
Wee Smoky is a single grain Scotch whisky finished in peated casks, which Gammell created specifically for cocktails in 2020.
While promoting the brand, Gammell realised many consumers believe they don’t like whisky and that cocktails can introduce a new audience to the category.
Sotti, who won Diageo World Class Australia in 2015 and now heads up London’s Archive & Myth, worked as the brand’s liquid development partner and created six classic cocktails.
“Wee Smoky takes a flavour that has traditionally been viewed as complex or intimidating and makes it approachable and exciting,” said Sotti.
“The goal was never simply to put whisky into a can – it was to create properly balanced cocktails that deliver the flavour and experience you would expect from a great bar serve.”
The range includes two traditional whisky cocktails – the Old Fashioned and the Manhattan – as well as branching out to non-whisky serves: the Margarita, the Espresso Martini and the Grape-fruit-arita, a riff on the Paloma.
The collection is finished with the Salted Caramel cocktail, a unique creation for the brand, described as ‘dessert, tailored for your pocket’.
Gammell added: “In consumer testing, so many people who swore they wouldn’t drink whisky really enjoyed our cocktails, saying they would order them at a bar.
Wee Smoky claims the RTD range is the ‘first’ of its kind dedicated to smoky whisky.
Each cocktail comes in a 100ml can, with ABVs ranging from 17% for the Grape-fruit-arita to 32.1% for the Old Fashioned.
The range is available in the UK from the brand’s website, with distribution secured with Select Drams. A mixed six-pack costs £30 (US$40), while four packs of each expression cost between £20 and £25 (US$27-US$33).
The brand has plans to launch in North America and Australia.
Wee Smoky has previously worked with Bemakers to promote its range in six European markets.

The Perthshire-based Aberargie Distillery has announced the launch of the first two releases in its new limited-edition Expressions series, created to explore the individual elements that shape the character of Aberargie’s whisky, beginning with the role played by different barley varieties.
Aberargie Laureate (48.2% ABV) is a single malt Scotch whisky, produced using 100% Laureate barley and matured in a combination of 32% first-fill Bourbon casks and 68% first-fill Sherry casks.
Aberargie Golden Promise (48.2% ABV) is a single malt Scotch whisky, produced using 100% Golden Promise barley and matured in 68% first-fill Bourbon casks and 32% first-fill Sherry casks.
These latest releases follow the distillery’s inaugural expression, launched in March, which was produced using a mash bill of 52% Golden Promise and 48% Laureate barley. The new whiskies allow drinkers to compare the flavours and characteristics associated with Laureate – a modern variety widely used throughout the Scotch whisky industry – and Golden Promise, the heritage barley once favoured by many of Scotland’s distillers, offering an old-versus-new comparison.
The Expressions series will explore two of the key pillars at the heart of Aberargie’s whisky-making philosophy: Laureate and Golden Promise. Each release will focus on a specific aspect of production and its influence on the character of the finished spirit.
Owned by Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, Aberargie is one of a small number of Scottish distilleries operating a barley-to-bottle model. Both Golden Promise and Laureate are grown on the family’s own farms, with the family-run business overseeing every stage of production, from distillation and maturation through to bottling. This end-to-end approach enables complete traceability, from barley field to finished bottle.
Commenting on the launch, Graeme Mackeddie, Head of Distilling at Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, said: “The response to our inaugural Aberargie release was incredibly encouraging. Its success demonstrated the level of interest in both the distillery and our approach to making whisky.”
“Barley is where every whisky begins, but the role it plays in creating flavour can sometimes be overlooked. Expressions allows us to showcase our interpretation of each barley variety and gives whisky drinkers the opportunity to explore the differences for themselves.”
“Laureate represents the barley we grow and work with today, while Golden Promise connects us to an important chapter in Scotch whisky’s heritage. Presenting the two whiskies side by side gives people a fascinating opportunity to compare their distinctive characteristics. It is the natural next step for Aberargie and the beginning of a series that will tell a much broader story about how our whisky is made.”
Aberargie Laureate and Aberargie Golden Promise will be available from September through selected specialist retailers. RRP’s (tbc).

The whisky was distilled in 1992 and matured for more than three decades. It draws inspiration from the River Spey, which flows through Scotland’s Speyside whisky region. Only 297 bottles have been released worldwide. Each carries a UK recommended retail selling price of £950 .
The whisky is bottled at 52.1% ABV. It was crafted from a marriage of weightier Speyside malts, brought together from a selection of first-fill and refill sherry butts.
“Calm Waters is a perfect reflection of the quiet strength that defines so many of the whiskies within our inventory – a spirit that evolves gently yet reveals remarkable depth over time,” said Jonathan Gibson, director of House of Hazelwood. “It is a testament to both the character of Speyside malts and the enduring philosophy that whisky is ready only when it’s ready.”
According to the brand, the name reflects a “defining duality” of “apparent tranquillity paired with hidden power,” mirroring the character of the River Spey.

The palate is described as full-bodied and richly textured, balancing sweet, dark notes with herbal depth. The finish is “exceptionally long and lingering, unfolding gradually with elegance and persistence.”

Webinar offers chance to buy Polish distillery
The team behind centuries-old Polish distillery Starka will host a webinar for potential buyers and real estate developers next month.
The historic home of aged rye vodka Starka is up for sale, with potential investors able to find out more about the Polish distillery during a webinar on Tuesday 11 August at 3pm GMT.
The digital session is open to prospective buyers and real estate developers to explore a joint acquisition structure.
The deal would include aged inventory, a 180-year-old site in the city of Szczecin, and the Starka brand.
According to the team behind Starka, the site’s underground cellars hold more than 50,000 litres of rye spirit aged for more than 33 years, with some stock dating back to 1947. The inventory is equal to approximately one million 700ml bottles ranging from 20 to 75 years old.
The digital session will talk participants through the site’s dual identity: a functional distillery and heritage brand, and a redevelopment scheme that includes five residential buildings, commercial space and parking.
The distillery sits just 260 metres from a station on the developing high-speed rail corridor linking Szczecin to the German city of Berlin and Polish capital Warsaw.
The opportunity comes amid a boom in tourism for Poland. Data from the European Union website showed a 21.5% growth in international tourist arrivals in 2022, reaching 13.9 million visitors. Germany accounted for 54.9% of inbound tourism and Ukraine represented 22.6%.

K. Michelle spoke with PEOPLE about the project: She shared
“Being a Tennessee girl, country is my first genre of choice, and I was always told because of other reasons, I couldn’t sing that. When it came down to it, I am a country singer.”
She emphasized that this is not a one-off experiment:
“I’m not an artist doing a country album. I’m a Country artist.”
The album reflects her Tennessee roots, exploring themes of southern soul, heartbreak, and faith. She previously took yodelling lessons as a child before earning a college scholarship.
Michelle previously released her “final” R&B album, ‘I’m the Problem,’ in 2023. She has long expressed a desire to pursue Country music but faced obstacles from her former label.
Learn More About Your Whiskey's Quality By Paying Attention To The Finish
Among the various elements that make up a great whiskey (or whisky), is, perhaps surprisingly, one that takes place after you've swallowed it. It's called the finish, and it refers to the aftertaste. After you've tasted the whiskey and it's gone down your throat, you may experience lingering flavors and sensations that are an important part of tasting a spirit and shouldn't be overlooked. Like other aspects of whiskey tasting, such as the spirits' appearance, nose (aroma), and the palate — that is, what it tastes like — the finish can be a rather subjective experience. But, in general, it's a fairly good indicator of a spirits' quality.
What you're looking for when it comes to judging quality via the finish is its intensity, complexity, and length. If there's nearly no aftertaste or if there's an off note at the end, this might indicate a young or a less well-made spirit. If, on the other hand, you get similar flavors as those on the palate or, even better, new ones that pop up and linger for a minute or more, this tends to indicate a well-matured and thoughtfully made whiskey that deserves your attention.
A whiskey with a good finish doesn't have to be pricey
While some bourbons that are renowned for a beautifully long finish, like Pappy Van Winkle 15, which can cost $2,000 on the secondary market (if you can find it), there are plenty of quality bourbons known for their outstanding finishes that won't drain your bank account. The award-winning Four Roses Single Barrel OBSV features a long, mellow finish with notes of rye spice, and will only set you back about $40.
Around the world, there's a long list of whiskies that offer wonderful finishes, along with other qualities of a great spirit. One Indian single malt, Indri Trini, renowned for its long and complex finish, comes in at around $50. Scotland's Glen Scotia Double Cask, from Campbelltown, also around $49, has a long, lovely finish as well. For Irish whiskey, Writer's Tears Copper Pot, at about $45, offers a lingering finish with oak spice.
While whiskey with a long, complex finish may indicate a high quality spirit, it's not the end-all-be-all when it comes to a great dram. There are many wonderful spirits that have robust flavors on the palate and a shorter, clean finish. Still, paying attention to a whiskey's finish can provide you with hints to its quality as part of an overall assessment of its look, smell, and palate. And a good starting point if you're unfamiliar with the whiskey is to try it neat at a well-stocked bar or at a tasting.
